BREAKING: Panthers hire ex-Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville

After much speculation following his dismissal in Chicago and after firing their former head coach the day before, the Florida Panthers announced this morning that they hired Joel Quenneville as their head coach.

The move comes almost five months to the day after the future Hockey Hall of Fame coach was relieved of his duties by General Manager Stan Bowman. His new General Manager, Dale Tallon, was the same person that hired him in Chicago, originally as a pro scout in September 2008.

Joel Quenneville coached 797 games (701 regular season and 96 playoff) with the Blackhawks from 2008 until his dismissal in November. His record was 452–249–96 in the regular season and 76–52 in the playoffs and his led the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cup titles.

According to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, the deal is very similar to the $6 million/year deal he had in Chicago.

The new head coach of the Panthers, Quenneville, will be introduced at a media press conference on Monday at 12 p.m. Eastern.

We can only guess that all the coaching isn’t out of him at this point. Pretty sure Dale and Scotty Bowman saw a guy that could take this team to the promised land, but Stanbo and Q had a different relationship after the 2015 Cup. Q wanted veteran players and all Stan could afford were washed up NHL’ers, never beens, AHL players, and Rundblad. Take Hossa off the roster and the holes got bigger as did the rift between Stan and Q.

Well it’s a fresh start with a team in sorry need of leadership since the foolish removal of Gallant. Imagine 2 good teams in Florida! Could happen.
