Kahun is a good bottom 6 player that can occasionally jump in a top 6 role, but the Hawks have plenty of them and not many defensemen that play defense. The salary is high for Maatta, but it’s not Kevin Hayes excessive.

Scary thing is it might actually be a better price tag than what the FA market can provide.

What’s the Hawk’s window is always my question. The 3rd overall and Gus for Trouba, Roslovic, Morrisey and try and do a STL next yr? Draft Byram or Turcotte and hope they help 33 yr old Kane, 34 yr old Toews, 37 yr old Keith and 36 yr old Seabs get over the top in 2-3 yrs?

Can’t say I’m overly thrilled with the pickup. Based on the Pens reaction you’d think they just won the lottery. 4 mil cap hit for three more seasons and I keep seeing injury prone and slow. Not to mention he was benched for three of the games against Columbus this spring where the Pens were swept. And if he’s slotting as a #5 that’s a lot of bread. Positives 9th in shot blocks when healthy.

You gave up a solid kid in Kahun and a pick…too much with the Pens in cap purgatory.

And while I agree with Mr. R that you’re starting to chip away at one of many holes on this team, one can only hope Bowman has bigger plans for the defense which he ignored last offseason unless you want to count the Brandon Manning signing…yikes. I’d rather that 4 mil be spent towards a top end UFA on the back end.

Meanwhile center is certainly a sore spot. One only needs to look south to St. Louis to see what added center depth helps your team accomplish. We can only hope there’s 10 to 12 more moves coming.

Maatta a 4th/5th Dman on most teams is a significant add on this Hawks team and they did not give up a top 6, top prospect or high draft pick. I see it as chipping away at one of many holes……. I ask is the D better today (not is it good) than yesterday and I say it is.

But I was hoping to leverage their cap space and get a lopsided deal like the Hawks were on the wrong side of while in cap hell. PIT was one of those cap strapped clubs, would have liked to get the pick instead of giving one.

All UFAs at currently reasonable cap hits. Seems to me there is tread on the tires for this group that can fill the right holes a lot cheaper and with less term than putting all of the eggs in the JVR/Faulk basket.

The Hawks have a top 4 right now, not a top 6 and add a Bozak and you have a top 5.

Never hear De Haan’s name come up. IIRC he’s 27 yrs old, a left shot and he’s a top 4 guy. This is a guy I wouldn’t mind giving term to.

The best centers in the league wouldn’t lose close to 60% of the face offs to any team including the BlackHawks.
Not sure what the deal is with the Hawks defense. The loose play infront of the net has been going on for awhile, and is yet another reason why Franson was part of this team. So” let the children play” has left the goalies out to dry. The back checking and forward play in the defense zone has been suspect all year. Back when the Hawks were good, the defensive play created the offense. That has all but disappeared with the smurf/ rookie crew, and been abandoned by the vets getting the big checks.
Highmore has been all over the net and high traffic areas, very visible, so don’t focus too much on his plus minus. Its just a stat. Ovi won how many scoring titles with a negative plus minus? Yet most every team would be better with him on it. Not to say Highmore is the next Ovi, I’ll let Stan sell you on that in the off season.

Gus’ contract is rumored to be 2-2.5 for 2 years, so 1.25 per year or so. Thats not a terrible contract. They will need him until MItchell, Joki, Forsling or someone else is ready. Thats not a terrible contract. Its moveable and gives them some insurance. And they can bury it in Rockford. Doesnt bother me.
