Denver allows three power play goals in loss to Western Michigan


The No. 4 Denver Pioneers dropped their series opener against Western Michigan 7–3 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on Friday night. The Broncos outshot the Pioneers 37–31 and extended their win streak to seven games. Denver has dropped two of its last three contests and will look to get back on track in the series finale on Saturday night.

Freshman forward Miko Matikka returned to the lineup after missing last Saturday’s series finale against North Dakota and potted two goals. Senior captain McKade Webster opened the scoring with his seventh goal of the season. Freshman netminder Freddie Halyk allowed five goals and made a season-high 30 saves.

Sam Colangelo got Western Michigan on the board with 1:29 left in the first period. It was the first of his three goals on the night and the first of three power play goals for the Broncos. Colangelo scored his second of the night with under four minutes left in regulation, making it a 5–3 lead for Western Michigan. The senior forward completed the hat trick via the empty-net goal with under two minutes left.

— With two goals on Friday, Matikka recorded his second multi-goal effort of the season while extending his points streak to 10 games. The freshman has nine goals and 13 points during that stretch.

— Sean Behrens, Massimo Rizzo, Carter King, Rieger Lorenz and Zeev Buium each tallied an assist. The latter extended his points streak to 11 games.

— Webster registered a team-high five shots on goal, marking a season high for the senior captain.

— Jack Devine, Jared Wright and Matikka each tallied three shots on goal.

— Halyk allowed at least five goals for the third time this season and second time in the last three games.

— The Pioneers went 1 for 2 on the power play.
