5 to 6 mil is way too much for Crawford at this point.

Hopefully the expansion draft helps, but unless they get 2 or 3 people to surprise us like Kubalik they won’t be good next season.

JJ, you need to make time to write more often. This is the most simple, direct, easy to understand “autopsy” on another Hawk season I’ve read.  Simple enough that any Hawk fan who followed the club even a little bit the past 4ish yrs can see it’s the same approach and same result as your following words point out.

There was a time 5-10 summers ago when the Blackhawks would have to nip and tuck every offseason and get creative to hopefully sign their RFAs and stay under the salary cap, which is a zero-sum game—if you are spending every dime you have under the cap to retain your current guys, there is not much money left to improve with.

This summer, the Blackhawks are back there again, but this time, they are going to have to spend every dime to retain Kubalik, who at 26, may never be better than what he is now, and possibly Dylan Strome (ditto). And, they may even have to lose a serviceable veteran defenseman like Olli Maatta to do it.

The zero-sum game now applies to a fringe playoff team, not a perennial Cup contender.

Yes, the end of the yr nip and tuck of shedding some salary to become cup compliant has gone on for 10 yrs except now they are doing so with a non-playoff team, not cup winners, to retain its players.  That’s the takeaway. ………..The flight of the golf ball tells you everything you need to know about the swing.  The organIzation’s swing shows the results of the approach.  That simple.

The only changes made to the swing are bringing Colliton in and deleting McD.  The only reason I can see that the swing MIGHT be corrected this offseason is this is the first yr StanBow won’t have McD involved however small or big that was.

That’s all I got as far as solving this 4 yr riddle. Has enough been done to correct the organIzational swing to correct the path that has failed.

Great article , I almost feel like they have let the contracts run out to really rebuild

I wish they would great creative , as we could see Vegas toyed with them, we need more size at D and forward, need more speed.

I really don’t know what they can do? What could they get for Toews in a trade? Keith? I wouldn’t sign Strome for more than one year,

They were really exposed by Vegas, I mean this draft the player they get in first round MIGHT be ready in 3 years, Kane and Toews will be 34 ? They need more than a few players to fix this!

I would try to trade for picks , do buyouts for cap room for taking on a few bad contracts for more picks and play more of the kids , They aren’t in a good position .

Well written article JJ, a tad bit harsh on Kane, but the rest is pretty close to spot on. Boqvist is anything but a good dman right now. Sloppy gaps, slow thinking, bad angles, out skated, and out muscled. The Hawks don’t need anymore under sized puck moving back enders.

Crow was better than his numbers suggest. He was the difference every night or the Hawks would have been embarrassed in addition to being out played.(see Arizona) Until the last two games the Hawk defense let Crow see the shot and picked up the garbage infront of the net.

No puck luck, added to the Hawks woes, otherwise they might have looked better than they really are.

Saad isn’t worth $6M, and should be traded first while he still has some value. Crow remaining for a year or two may make a difference so that losing doesn’t become a culture on Madison Street. Baby Subban and Dehlia are not #1 goalies, and never will be. If the Russian kid is still available, the Hawks got to take him, or expect to have to pay a king’s ransom for anyone that can give what Crow has, for the last 8-9 years.

The Detroit model has failed the Hawks(small fast forwards, small puck moving dmen), just like the run and shoot offense in football failed. Its time to bring in new leadership, new ideas, and new players. The playoff window has officially closed for this team. RIP Chelsea Dagger.

John great write up as always…I agree it would be great if we heard from you more…

This playoffs was a false positive.  The Hawks shouldn’t have been there ending with their 3 straight non playoffs in a row.  How would that have sat.  Instead Bowman and his coach get cover for beating an Oilers team with a really bad defense.  Ironically McD had extended Bowman last year and then was axed and I’m sure the Hawks don’t want to hand out any more cash.

But the reality is the eye and smell test doesn’t pass muster.  The defense is still a train wreck as we saw in this series.  An aging Crawford gave up several that he’d like to have back and was bombarded in the only win the Hawks had against a deep solid knights squad.  Instead it looks like Bowman is making progress when he isn’t.  And how bout the lineup changes JC made.

You mentioned Bodquist – how does that Joker for Nylander trade look right now – horrible.  Meanwhile Lehner’s biggest problem was he was honest and open – and he was gone.

There’s a lot of problems which they’ll continue to paint over until they finally get new leadership in the front office.  Start with a pres of hockey ops and go from there.

    John,

I like your candor (someone has to do it…) but think you’re also a bit too kind in your evaluation.  The only thing that will change where the Hawks are today is a complete house cleaning at the top.  StanBo, Boy Coach, assistants including old 2 goal (Brookbank).

StanBo has been a part of the demise since his rise after Dale was shown the door.  He needs to be buried with Julius and the rest of the Ceasars.  Stan liked his job too much to stand up to McDontknow, and did not or would not admit his signature on the high priced, long term, NMC contracts.  As GM, only he made these decisions and stood (knelt) next to McD when they were signed.  Old Julie took the knife like a man, or so we were told.

Other teams have the same problem in managing the fickle salary cap and inherent nightmare it brings in dumping quality to get out of financial mandates.   If Rocky nixed buyouts- think about Bickell, Hossa, et al-to conserve cash flow, he did it knowingly at the expense of losing talent that we’d nurtured, i.e., Terrovainen in the Bickell deal.  Might as well dump the farm system if this is how these situations are managed because everyone is expendable.  What do you re-build or replentish with (your 3rd year Penn State guy is ready, will continue school on-line…)

Last, I disagree with your assessment of Boqvist.  Add Beudine, Nylander, and Sykura to that group too.   Undersized, underachieving, and in the case of Boqvist, thoroughly out played by the big boys from LV.   At least 3 Boqvist penalty’s resulted from his being soundly beaten by the speed and physicality of those boys in goals; he hung on for dear life with his (now useless) active stick and watched them put 3 or 4 into the net while he watched in the comfort of the box.

Great drafting StanBo, great trade in the case of Nylander that makes Samsonov look like a Ferrari.  Dump little Allie while you can.   Anyone can make a bad trade; moving this softie down to the 4th line says Stan can’t admit his mistake and get him a new home…

Hope Rocky takes his own advise that…”a fish rots at the head” and cleans out the palace.
