The visitors surprisingly jumped into the game with a bunch more energy, but still gave up a season-high 19 shots to the Lightning in the first period. Forwards Steven Stamkos and Brayden Point both scored their 31st and 26th goals, respectively, on the power play as both teams found themselves shorthanded twice in the opening frame. Stamkos’ goal was the exiting type of hockey we have become accustomed to from the two-time Stanley Cup champions.

In a rarity, defenseman Calvin de Haan scored his third goal of the season while shorthanded. Chicago would tie the game when Alex DeBrincat buried his 39th goal of the season at the 17:21 mark of the period. Many still believe that there was no market for de Haan at the deadline; I truly believe that over Kyle Davidson’s asking price being too high, others did not know about his ability to pile on the shorthanded goals against the Lightning.

The first period overall was a mess with Chicago not being able to stay out of the penalty box, but as we know in sports, always expect the unexpected, as the period ended with the score tied 2–2.

The Lightning took back the lead when Ross Colton scored his 13th and 14th goals of the season, beating Kevin Lankinen at the 6:12 and 12:15 marks of the second period to give the Lightning the lead back at 4–2.

After two periods of play, the Blackhawks were completely outplayed, as the great Charlie Roumeliotis showed on Twitter. The Lightning looked to do their part trying not to fall asleep long enough to let the Blackhawks back into the game.

We could beat a dead horse, but Chicago was able to muster one shot in the first 12 minutes of action, as the talented Lightning made quick work of the rebuilding Blackhawks in the third period. A Hall of Fame college basketball coach used to use a four-corners offense before the shot clock was implemented in order to keep the ball way from his opponents and use the clock up to win games. The Lightning did their best in making Coach Smith happy with locking down the offense and making Chicago look like they were running around chasing their own tales.

Analysis

Chicago fans were able to get another look at their favorite bottom-line forward Brandon Hagel for a whopping 12 minutes or so and anyone that thought he was not worth two prospects, albeit not top prospects, and two first-round picks really need to open their eyes and see that Hagel will be nothing more than a bottom-minutes forward and chip in his fair share of goals, but will not fire away at 23% ever again. These type of forwards are useful on Stanley Cup-type teams, however, there are another 150 Hagels skating in the NHL. Davidson did exactly what he needed to do at the trade deadline. His empty-net goal was really something, though.

As a 15 handicap in golf, I was able to spend a lot of the hockey game working on my grip as I prepare for the upcoming golf season here in the Midwest. As a fan of the Blackhawks for over 40 years, I did not want my team to feel alone. If I can save some strokes off the tee, I can really push my handicap toward 10–12, awarding me with an eight-year deal with a full no-movement clause, oh wait, those days are in the past.

Chicago is back on home ice on Sunday as the Arizona Coyotes come to town for a 6 p.m. CDT puck drop on Madison Street.

The first-round picks could slide to 2025 and 2026 should they fall within the top 10 of either draft, though that is unlikely given the Lightning are perennial Stanley Cup contenders, and adding Hagel furthers that window for the two-time defending champions.

Hagel was having a career year this season for the Blackhawks, having posted 21 goals and 16 assists through 55 games.

Originally a sixth-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres, the Blackhawks signed as an unrestricted free agent in 2019.

Katchouk, originally the 44th overall pick of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Lightning, has tallied two goals and four assists in 38 games with Tampa Bay this season.

Raddysh, a former linemate of Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome with the Erie Otters, was selected 58th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Lightning. He has posted five goals and seven assists in 53 games for Tampa Bay this season.

Needless to say, it is tough to see Hagel, a fan favorite in Chicago, traded, but for the return General Manager Kyle Davidson received, the deal is an absolute no-brainer for a franchise starving for quality future assets. Hagel’s value would likely never have been higher than it was currently, and Davidson taking advantage of that is an extremely encouraging sign moving forward. Davidson has now shown he is not afraid to maximize his assets no matter how tough a decision it is or how the fan base might perceive the move.

Simply put, Davidson recognizing and capitalizing on maximizing his assets is critical to the success of the Blackhawks’ rebuild.

In case you missed last night’s episode of The Rinkcast, our panel broke down a potential Hagel trade and how capitalizing on his high trade value was a must for the Blackhawks. Needless to say, Davidson viewed things the same way in the end.

With many other pieces on the Blackhawks’ roster likely still up for grabs ahead of Monday’s trade deadline, Davidson’s work is just beginning. If the Hagel trade is any indication of things to come, Blackhawks fans have a lot to be excited about this weekend.

It is no secret the Blackhawks badly need to replenish their mostly barren cupboards, and the trade deadline will serve as newly minted General Manager Kyle Davidson’s first big opportunity to do so, and is one he needs to take full advantage of since he has a number of assets that should be moved in order to start building toward the future.

Before breaking down each player’s likelihood of being dealt and a potential return for each player, it is important to first analyze what the priority needs to be for the Blackhawks entering the deadline.

Simply put, there needs to be one goal—and one goal only—leading up to March 21: Asset maximization.

What exactly does asset maximization actually mean? That is a great question, and is one Davidson needs to be keenly aware of. Asset maximization means gaining any sort of net positive in a transaction. This can be accomplished in various ways depending on the franchise, so it is important to understand the Blackhawks’ true situation: Needing to build the franchise back up to being a Stanley Cup winner. That is the critical context Davidson needs to be working under moving forward, no matter what that requires in terms of personnel decisions. There are a number of different ways to view maximizing assets, and that largely depends on the asset itself combined with your goal for the asset.

One key component of this rebuild is Davidson cannot afford to be glued to any player for any specific reason. Every player—yes, EVERY player—can be had for the right return. Let’s not forget that the great Wayne Gretzky was traded TWICE in his illustrious career. So yes, even the “sacred cows” and the “rebuild cornerstones” can be moved—if the return is right. Now, that does NOT mean the Blackhawks should or will trade any given player in the organization, but Davidson at least needs to listen and assess any potential deal that comes across his desk, no matter how far-fetched it may seem. Doing his due diligence on transactions is a critical part of his job, and getting the Blackhawks back to Stanley Cup contention—something they are miles from currently—is his ultimate job responsibility.

With that in mind, Davidson needs to accurately determine how every asset in the organization fits into the grand scheme of getting the Blackhawks back to the promised land, and then act accordingly based on his judgements. Of course, there is so much more involved with this process than the average fan would like to admit, such as the fact the team still needs to sell tickets and merchandise, still needs NHL players playing NHL minutes, still needs to meet the salary cap floor and still needs veterans playing in key roles in order to help younger players properly develop. It is not as simple as trading away every established player for future assets and just playing a bunch of “kids” in order to bottom out. That can—and should—be done to an extent, but again, there still needs to be some degree of structure on an NHL team during a rebuild.

So, with the context established, let’s dig through the current NHL roster to realistically assess where each player stands in the short term and long term. While AHL players and prospects could be dealt, the return would likely be marginal at best, so it is not really worth breaking down those players in particular.

Forwards

Henrik Borgstrom — $1 million cap hit through 2022–23

Borgstrom is a player who likely would not have much value at the trade deadline since he would likely not even crack the lineup for a playoff team. Being under contract through the end of next season, expect Borgstrom to be back competing for a full-time spot in the Hawks’ lineup next season, with that likely determining his long-term future with the organization.

Ryan Carpenter — $1 million cap hit, pending unrestricted free agent

Carpenter is the first player on the list seemingly destined to have a new address next week. As a player who knows his role—a defensively responsible fourth-liner capable of winning face-offs—Carpenter is the type of player playoff teams enjoy cheaply adding at the deadline as they gear up for a Cup run. Though the return will not be much, perhaps a sixth-round draft pick at best, Carpenter’s value is highest to the Blackhawks by being dealt at the deadline and hoping that draft pick can turn into a future piece of the rebuild, as he would likely move to greener pastures this summer as a free agent anyway. As such, take what you can get and run.

Kirby Dach — $925,000 cap hit, pending restricted free agent

Dach is the first player to fit into the “no sacred cows” category. Frankly, there is little to no chance of him being dealt at the deadline, but he needs to be one of those players who Davidson takes a long look at this summer in order to determine what Dach will truly provide for the franchise down the road. If Dach can become a legitimate top-six NHL player down the road, then he is very likely a piece the team will keep. If there is cause for concern about Dach’s future, it would be extremely wise for Davidson to cash out on the value Dach has in order to maximize the asset. Again, that is not an endorsement for moving him, just a recognition of what the ultimate focus needs to be. All that said, expect Dach back in the fall competing for a permanent top-six role, and hopefully being able to truly and properly fill it.

Alex DeBrincat — $6.4 million cap hit through 2022–23

Another of the “sacred cows,” DeBrincat will very likely not be leaving Chicago any time soon, which is perfectly fine. He is certainly young enough to envision him still being a high-end player by the time the Hawks are back in the playoffs and will likely be one of the main faces of the franchise through the rebuild. But again, the focus during the rebuild needs to be asset maximization. If another team presents a massive haul in return for DeBrincat, Davidson has to strongly consider it. The likelihood of that happening is probably slim, so get used to enjoying DeBrincat for the foreseeable future.

MacKenzie Entwistle — $800,000 cap hit through 2023–24

Entering an extension next season, Entwistle is a player similar to Borgstrom who would not really offer much value to a playoff team at the deadline. Entwistle likely has a bit more safe of a position with the organization moving forward given the two-year contract extension he received, but will likely never be more than a bottom-six role player, which is fine. Entwistle is young enough where he could still be a viable depth option when the team returns to prominence, or he could end up being similar to Carpenter and being flipped for a mid-late draft pick at a future deadline. Regardless, he likely will not be going anywhere soon.

Brandon Hagel — $1.5 million cap hit through 2023–24

Ah, now we are talking. Perhaps the most hotly contested and debated Blackhawks player in terms of the 2022 trade deadline, Hagel is the ultimate question mark in terms of asset maximization. Let me first say that I truly do love Hagel. Originally a sixth-round draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres, the Hawks signed Hagel as an unsigned free agent in 2019 having given up nothing to acquire him. Talk about a return on investment. Hagel has blossomed into a fan favorite capable of doing literally everything for his team—all at a low cap hit—which is exceedingly desirable and valuable for a contending team.

There are certainly two sides of the coin here. One the one hand, Hagel is just 23 years old and has quickly risen through the lineup to be a go-to player, having already lit the lamp 21 times this season. With his youth, one could certainly envision Hagel being another face of the franchise during the rebuild and still being a contributor upon the Hawks rising back to prominence. However, players of his type oftentimes struggle with durability as their careers progress (see: Shaw, Andrew), so that is one thing to take into serious consideration here.

On the flip side, the return for Hagel right now rumored to have already been turned down by the Blackhawks is a first-round pick and a prospect. Based on the return for Tyler Toffoli, that return would seem to be accurate given the market. For a team starving for quality prospects and future assets, that is an extremely difficult return to say no to for a player who would ultimately be a third-liner on a Stanley Cup team. Can you actually turn down two quality future assets for a third-line winger? Can you actually turn down those assets when you realistically should be able to at worst replace Hagel’s value with that late first-round pick? Again, I truly do love Hagel, I really do, but that would be an awfully tough pill to swallow entering a rebuild. It is a tough decision, but that is why Davidson is paid the big bucks. While I do not think the Blackhawks would necessarily regret keeping Hagel, his value will likely never be higher than it is right now. He needs to be a player the team either keeps through his prime or moves now; anything outside of that is poor asset management. Moving Hagel for a quality return is the epitome of asset maximization, though it sounds like the Hawks do plan to keep him in the fold.

Tyler Johnson — $5 million cap hit through 2023–24

Back to much simpler answers, Johnson likely will not be going anywhere for the foreseeable future given his contract. Johnson seems destined to be one of those players who will be a veteran to lean on for legitimate NHL minutes through the rebuild, and that is fine. Not much to see here.

Patrick Kane — $10.5 million cap hit through 2022–23

Oh, there is so much to debate here, but the fact of the matter is, right or wrong, Kane will not be going anywhere unless he wants to. Short of something drastically changing in the coming days, Kane will not be dealt at the deadline, which would push his trade window to the draft at the earliest. Of course, moving Kane would be the largest possible pill to swallow for the organization financially, but he is by far the most valuable asset the team has, and again, with the focus on asset maximization, moving Kane within the next year would work wonders toward truly rebuilding the Blackhawks. Some would argue the team cannot truly rebuild without moving him, and it is difficult to disagree. Sure, Kane would likely still be a quality player in four or five years, but by not moving him, the team would be prolonging the rebuild and likely guaranteeing not winning another Cup during Kane’s playing career. It will be tough, but the bullet has to be bitten at some point.

Jujhar Khaira — $975,000 cap hit through 2022–23

Khaira has been injured for much of the season, but is similar to Carpenter in the sense he is a reliable veteran fourth-liner that teams know they can count on come playoff time. Expect Khaira to be next year’s Carpenter, being dealt at the 2023 trade deadline for a late pick. To give Hawks fans a comparable they can relate to, the team acquiring Khaira next year will be looking at their version of the Blackhawks acquiring Andrew Desjardins back in the day.

Dominik Kubalik — $3.7 million cap hit, pending restricted free agent

Kubalik is a prime example of poor asset management. Kubalik’s value was sky high after a wildly successful 30-goal rookie campaign, but has sharply dropped since he has returned back to Earth in the last couple of seasons. Still, Kubalik is a capable goal scorer who can slot into a playoff lineup in a depth role, and depth scoring is critically important for playoff success. As such, Kubalik would be a player fans should expect could be dealt ahead of the deadline. While the Hawks could opt to keep him around for some depth scoring of their own, it seems like Kubalik has fallen out of favor in Chicago, so just cashing out on the asset might make the most sense both in the short and long term. The return will not be nearly what it would have been in the offseason of 2020, but the Hawks should still manage a decent return and are apparently asking for a second-round pick, though I would say a third-round pick for Kubalik is more realistic.

Philipp Kurashev — $842,500 cap hit, pending restricted free agent

Kurashev falls into a similar category as Entwistle, being a player with a fairly safe long-term future in Chicago. The Hawks likely hoped Kurashev would take a step forward this season, but it did not come. Still, Kurashev will likely be around for the foreseeable future, likely fitting in the lineup as a reliable two-way third-liner with the ability to slot up higher if needed.

Sam Lafferty — $750,000 cap hit, pending unrestricted free agent

Lafferty is actually an intriguing case. He is a depth forward likely in the prime of his career, but it seems like the Hawks like him and he has actually started heating up a bit of late. While he likely would not bring much of a return, capitalizing on the hot streak might make the most sense from the asset maximization standpoint, especially since Lafferty likely would not be playing a notable role by the time the Blackhawks are through their rebuild. If the team does move on from Lafferty at the deadline, something in the range of a fifth- or sixth-round pick is probably reasonable to expect. Still though, with the team seemingly liking what he offers, do not be surprised if he sticks around past the deadline and re-signs in the offseason.

Dylan Strome — $3 million cap hit, pending restricted free agent

Love him or hate him, Strome has quickly turned around his season with an impressive hot streak entering the deadline, and what perfect timing. The team has reportedly been trying to find a suitor for a year now without luck, but his surge might just change that. However, as time has worn on, it has become evident Strome would hold a different role with the Hawks than he would with a contending team, and the potential problem with that is most teams likely know Strome is not really suited for being a third-line player, which is where he would likely slot in on a contender. He is the type of player who needs to be playing big minutes with quality players in order to produce, and that is probably not something a contending team could provide him. The Blackhawks are reportedly asking for a second-round pick in return for Strome, though a third-round pick is probably more realistic. But given that, is it even worth it to move him for that type of return? If Strome can be an affordable top-six guy during the rebuild, that might not be the worst thing to just keep him, especially with his obvious chemistry with DeBrincat and Kane. Again, the Hawks need NHL players playing NHL minutes during the rebuild, and that is something Strome could provide. But, if they do find a suitor and move him, you will not find anyone complaining here.

Jonathan Toews — $10.5 million cap hit through 2022–23

Toews’ situation is similar to Kane’s in the sense he will not be going anywhere unless he wants to, plain and simple. Also similar to Kane, a deal would likely not happen until the draft at the earliest. But, unlike Kane, there would not be nearly as big of a market for Toews should he want to move on. His health concerns are very legitimate, and that does not even begin to factor in the monstrous cap hit. Even at half retained, there likely would not be a huge return coming Chicago’s way given he would probably be a third-line center on a contending team. While it is possible Toews could move on one day, it is probably more realistic for Toews to finish his esteemed career as a Blackhawk, whenever that might be, and it could very well be sooner rather than later.

Defensemen

Calvin de Haan — $4.55 million cap hit, pending unrestricted free agent

This might be among the easier decisions Davidson has at the deadline. Similar to Carpenter, de Haan is the type of player contending teams crave at the deadline. De Haan is a reliable, defense-first defenseman who is willing to put his body on the line to get the job done, something every Cup team needs. It is highly likely de Haan would not re-sign with the team, so cashing out on him now is the only rational choice here. While it may require the Hawks to retain some of his cap hit in order to receive a quality return, that is something they should eagerly welcome. The reported ask is a second-round pick, and that could feasibly happen if the Blackhawks did retain half of his cap hit, but expecting a third-round pick is probably more realistic for the veteran blueliner.

Erik Gustafsson — $800,000 cap hit, pending unrestricted free agent

The Blackhawks managed to deal Gustafsson at the trade deadline once before. If another team is willing to give the Hawks literally anything for him this time around, Davidson needs to accept and hang up the phone before the other team changes their mind. It is either sayonara now or in the offseason, so if an asset can be had, great. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, again.

Caleb Jones — $850,000 cap hit, pending restricted free agent

The younger Jones is likely a player the Blackhawks plan to have around for a while, which is fine. He is a young, serviceable bottom-pairing guy at a cheap cap hit. Nothing wrong with that, but not much to see here, either.

Seth Jones — $9.5 million cap hit through 2029–30

The elder Jones has been solid for the Hawks this season, but will always be judged in light of the gargantuan package then-general manager Stan Bowman gave up to acquire him at the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Yes, the Blackhawks badly needed a No. 1 defenseman, but mortgaging the future entering a rebuild to acquire one was not the way to do it. Jones will be a valuable piece for the Hawks for many years to come, but they had better hope they will be back to contending while Jones is still playing at a high level.

Jake McCabe — $4 million cap hit through 2024–25

McCabe is one of those players where you kind of just throw your hands up and ask “Why?” because you just are not sure what to make of him. As has been said earlier, the Blackhawks will need NHL players playing NHL minutes during the rebuild, and that is precisely what he will do.

Connor Murphy — $4.4 million cap hit through 2025–26

Murphy has developed into a quality blueliner for the Hawks, though like Jones, he will always be tied to the trade made to acquire him. Despite that, Murphy will be another quality piece moving forward. It seems likely he will be in Chicago for a while, though entertaining the idea of cashing out on him sometime in the next couple of years might not be the worst thing, either. He would certainly be on the decline by the time the Hawks are regular playoff contenders, so in the name of asset maximization, it would make sense to move him eventually.

Riley Stillman — $1.35 million cap hit through 2023–24

Stillman is similar to Caleb Jones in the sense he is also a cheap 24-year-old bottom-pairing defender. The Blackhawks seem to like Stillman, so do not expect him to be leaving the organization any time soon. Not much to see here.

Alex Vlasic — $824,167 cap hit through 2023–24

The newest member of the Hawks is just getting his professional career started, so there is no reason to think he will be heading out the door in the near future. A physically imposing blueliner, it will be enjoyable to see if Vlasic can reach his potential and develop into a top-four defenseman capable of doing a bit of everything. Goaltenders

Marc-Andre Fleury — $7 million cap hit, pending unrestricted free agent

Another hot-button topic leading up to the deadline is what will happen with the legendary netminder. You might be disappointed, but I am not going to waste much time here. A promise was made to Fleury that it would be his decision regarding a potential move at the deadline and the team intends to keep that promise. Right or wrong, that is the reality of the situation. Yell at clouds all you want, like our own Jeff Osborn has been doing. Obviously yes, from a rebuilding standpoint, moving Fleury and getting a solid return—such as, say, a first-round pick—would be hugely beneficial for the Blackhawks. If Fleury wants to stay for the rest of the season, that’s fine, too. The team got a year out of a legendary player and person, and there is value in that. Even though this is The Rink, not everything needs to be negative. If Fleury wants to move to a contender and the Hawks get some assets in return, wonderful. If he wants to stay for the homestretch, enjoy it. Simple as that.

Kevin Lankinen — $800,000 cap hit, pending unrestricted free agent

Like Lafferty, Lankinen might be an underrated name heading into the deadline, especially if Fleury wants to stay in Chicago. With teams looking for goaltending help, a dirt-cheap option like Lankinen might actually prove to be quite appealing at the deadline. Lankinen can provide NHL minutes both now and in the future for whichever team he finds himself on come March 22. If it is with the Hawks, he can likely be a tandem goalie through the rebuild, which is perfectly fine and good. If he is dealt, he might fetch the Hawks a mid-round pick, which, hey, that is more than what they gave up to get him (hint: nothing). Lankinen is very replaceable, so if the Hawks do have an offer of note for him at the deadline, they might as well pull the trigger and ensure they get something for him since he could theoretically walk this summer.

That was a lot of information, so let’s summarize. The players to really keep an eye on ahead of Monday’s trade deadline are the following: Carpenter, de Haan, Fleury and Kubalik. Maybe add in the likes of Hagel and Strome, too. And for those sneaky trade chips, maybe Lafferty and Lankinen. And Gustafsson, if anyone actually wants him. Outside of those names, everyone else is likely safe, at least for now. And that is not to say all of those players will be dealt; quite the contrary. If even half of those players are moved, it will have been an eventful deadline for Davidson and the Blackhawks.

Of course, being able to move some of those bigger chips and acquire some quality pieces for the future has to be the goal, and if a first-round pick for this year’s draft can be recouped, even better. Realistically, let’s hope for maybe a second-round pick and some mid-round picks. But regardless of the outcome, how Davidson handles this weekend will likely start to paint a picture of the future of the franchise, both for the short and long term, and that is certainly something Blackhawks fans can look forward to.

I know what you are thinking. The time is now to move Hagel because his value may very will be at its peak. Time and time again he is proving he can be a solid top-nine player. And, if the rumors are true that the Blackhawks are being offered a first-round pick and more, many would say to take the money and run. If the Blackhawks were ready to win, Hagel could be given a red carpet to walk on every night. Unfortunately, reality says the Blackhawks need a lot more quality assets in order to climb back to the top. While we still do not know who the Blackhawks’ general manager will be, March 21 will be here in the blink of an eye.

Overshadowed in the Blackhawks’ pair of hat tricks were other standout performances. Ryan Carpenter was credited with the game-winning goal, his second of the season. Seth Jones picked up three assists, now having 31 on the year. Kirby Dach KEPT the puck on a 2-on-1 and buried it in the back of the net for his eighth of the season on a nifty forehand-backhand power move around Devils goaltender Jon Gillies. There were a lot of names on the stat sheet for a thrilling game.

A controversy to come out of Friday’s win was what happened on Hagel’s empty-net goal. Devils defensemen P.K. Subban tripped Hagel with a slew foot as he was skating toward the net and a scuffle ensued. It should be no surprise to anyone that Subban did something to cause pushing and shoving. Hagel’s comments after the game were warranted, and Subban’s image to the everyday hockey fan is not a good one.

Friday night’s home victory marked their only of this month. The Blackhawks have two more, Sunday against the St. Louis Blues and Thursday against the Edmonton Oilers left on the homestand. In a season where it is hard to find many positives, you can chalk Friday up as one that reminds you of the joy of hockey and being at the rink.

The Blackhawks may not be a playoff team but it does not discount their efforts of late. They are playing fine hockey and capitalizing on their chances. 

The first period was uneventful in the scoring category. Multiple chances from both teams early were kicked away by solid goaltending. Given the Blackhawks ranking toward the bottom of the league in scoring, being able to jump out to an early lead would be beneficial. And that came in the second period with a goal from fan-favorite Brandon Hagel.

This was a crazy sequence leading to Chelsea Dagger for the Blackhawks. It is something you do not see every day and it makes for great highlight reel material. 

The Blackhawks would score their second and third goals in the third period to seal the deal. Kane scored on the powerplay and Kubalik tallied an empty net with minutes remaining.

Fleury stopped 37 shots and one helmet removal of a Ducks player. He has been a joy to watch. He has been the backbone of the win streak and when there is a big save to be made, he shows up again and again.

This is nice to see. Like Eddie Olczyk always says, get pucks and people to the blue paint and good things will happen. The Blackhawks have to fight for those “greasy goals” because a lot of the time, they are outmanned in the offensive skill department.

The news on Toews is scary. It is, and from his statement on Tuesday, there is so much unknown as to his condition. This does not seem like your typical NHL “undisclosed” situation, either. The truth is not being hidden; neither Toews nor the organization know what is contributing to his ailment, and they are actively trying to figure it out. Many have been critical of Toews’ play in recent years, and that is fine, but this has been the Hawks’ best 200-foot player over the last 13 seasons, period. He is their leader, a three-time Stanley Cup Champion, Conn Smythe winner and his name and number will be stitched on a banner and hung from the rafters of the United Center. His contributions to what has been the best era in Chicago Blackhawks hockey are immeasurable, and whether you had high hopes for the Hawks this season or if you were hoping for failure and a rebuild, it is really hard to envision the team without Captain Serious. Let’s just hope that they can pinpoint his ailment and he can successfully recover.

As for the 2020–21 season; now what? Circumstances have changed, the team is weaker and picturing the Hawks jumping into the playoff mix come springtime is unrealistic. In fact, this could get ugly. The defensive unit is a weak spot, they are unproven between the pipes and without Nylander, Dach and Toews, the offense is significantly affected. General Manager Stan Bowman’s half-hearted “rebuild” has just been put into overdrive. Regardless of the message to fans or the organization’s intentions for the 2020–21 season, the Hawks will not be very good. There is a real possibility that without so many key ingredients, that they will finish towards the bottom of the barrel in the league and will have a lottery pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Whether or not Bowman and company elect to re-sign Dylan Strome will not change this team for the better, and if they can move him for futures or picks, they are wise to do so.

New/old acquisition Brandon Pirri will play more than many expected early on. Centers Carl Soderberg and Mattias Janmark, originally thought to be third- and fourth-line fixtures, may now be ticketed for first- and second-line duties. While the Hawks may not win many games with those two players in those roles, all fans should be rooting for them. On one-year deals, if either Soderberg, or the one-time 19-goal scorer, Janmark, are productive, come the April 12 trade deadline, either or both could see a decent return for the Hawks’ future. Newly acquired center Lucas Wallmark may also fall into that category.

Before the injuries, there are some fans that unwisely may have thought the Hawks’ were contenders heading into this season, while others were beating the “play the kids” drum as loudly as possible. Well, the latter is here. The kids will play. You will not see a complete youth movement, as the Hawks will mettle with their more experienced depth early on, but as the season chugs along, be ready to see a revolving door between Chicago and Rockford.

Some prospects may now be locks out of mini camp. Barring disappointment, it is possible or likely, that Pius Suter may be in a top-six role right away, and fans should be excited because of the tools he brings to the table. Winger Brandon Hagel had a decent 19-goal run in Rockford last season and at some point will see some NHL action. Hagel has been on loan to Thurgau in the second-tier Swiss League (SL) this season and has tallied 15 points in 14 games. Prospect MacKenzie Entwistle brings his 6-foot-3 size, speed and energy to the table. Entwistle is starting to figure out a professional game and with 26 points in Rockford in 2019–20, he is another to keep an eye on. Responsible center prospect Philipp Kurashev, fresh off a loan to Lugano in the Swiss-A league, could use more time in Rockford, but if the Hawks wisely shed some center depth at the trade deadline, he could get his first taste of the NHL in mid-April. Evan Barratt may have a longer road to being a true NHL impact player, but his skillset and hockey sense are there. He will most likely be in Rockford for the bulk of the season and rightly so, but injuries and/or trades could see him in Chicago for some games. Lastly, considering he is currently in North America playing in the World Junior Championship, inviting Czech prospect Michael Teply to camp should be something to consider.

The blue line, though not one to brag about, has a little more stability than it did a year ago—for now.  It is expected that Ian Mitchell will get his shot, and it will be interesting to see if he is as good as advertised. Nikita Zadorov, acquired in the Brandon Saad trade, will be a regular, as will Calvin de Haan, Connor Murphy, Adam Boqvist, Duncan Keith and yes, Brent Seabrook; remember him? Will the Hawks be able to unload the hefty contracts of Seabrook, Keith, de Haan or Murphy come the trade deadline? Seabrook, never, and the others, probably not in this economic climate unless the Hawks eat a big chunk of salary and cap hit.

Considering how much this unit will be playing in their own end of the ice though, injuries will happen and the combination of that and what may be inconsistent play from some will result in call ups and some younger kids getting a crack in the lineup. Wyatt Kalynuk, Lucas Carlsson and Nicolas Beaudin could all factor into that. Alec Regula is an intriguing prospect with high upside, but he is likely to see the entire season in Rockford. Another rearguard worth noting is Anton Lindholm. The lesser name in the Saad trade has played NHL minutes in Colorado and has been coveted by Bowman for some time. At 26, Lindholm knows a pro game and, should younger prospects be better served with time in Rockford, Lindholm could provide support in the back.

A season of change is ahead, that is for sure. The number of different players and combinations that will be in and out of the lineup is impossible to predict, but if you are betting, take the over. At this point, anything is in play. Limit your expectations in the win column, as some games will not be much fun to watch. That said, keep an eye on the lineup as pieces of the Blackhawks’ future may be on the ice, and earlier than expected.

Finishing this season is looking bleak for the American Hockey League as spring rolls around. The above quote came from AHL President and CEO Dave Andrews in an interview on SiriusXM Radio with Gord Stellick and Scott Laughlin on Friday. Andrews called the possibility of the Calder Cup Playoffs happening this summer, alongside a possible NHL resumption of play, “very, very unlikely.”

The NHL is still holding out hope that the 2019–20 season can be salvaged sometime this summer, or, at the very least, the league could hold the Stanley Cup Playoffs or an altered version of the playoffs. But, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues with stay-at-home orders and social distancing in place, the ability to safely return to real hockey games before the fall seems unlikely for all North American leagues.

With the AHL 2019–20 season all but canceled, the Rockford IceHogs would fall short of finishing the year in what would have been a Calder Cup Playoff spot in the Central Division. But, the season was not a waste. First-year head coach Derek King led a young roster in Rockford through an up-and-down year and had the IceHogs fighting down the stretch of the season. Riding the successes from a trio of goaltenders, the Sikura brothers and a number of emerging rookies to name a few, the IceHogs took a step forward from the underwhelming finish of the 2018–19 season.

With that in mind and the 2019–20 season all but put to bed, let’s take a look at the postseason IceHogs team awards as voted on by me, myself and I.

Preseason predictions

Heading into the 2019–20 season, the Rockford IceHogs’ lineup was a promising mixture of veterans and high-end prospects turned professional rookies. Add in Kirby Dach for three games and the beginning of the year was an exciting time. And, it feels like a lifetime ago that these were the Rockford lines and pairings:

Obviously in the AHL, things change nearly every day with recalls, assignments and injuries. But, heading into the season back in October, here’s how I thought the season would play out by this time of year, and who would be the postseason award winners.

• Most Valuable Player: Matthew Highmore (Dark-horse picks: Collin Delia, Kris Versteeg)
• Rookie of the Year: Adam Boqvist (Dark-horse picks: Brandon Hagel, Philipp Kurashev)
• Defenseman of the Year: Adam Boqvist (Dark-horse picks: Chad Krys, Dennis Gilbert)
• Unsung Hero: Jacob Nilsson (Dark-horse picks: MacKenzie Entwistle, Tyler Sikura)
• Heavy Hitter Award: Dennis Gilbert (Dark-horse picks: Reese Johnson, Joni Tuulola)
• Most Improved Player: Kevin Lankinen (Dark-horse picks: Alexandre Fortin, Nick Moutrey)

I was right on zero of these predictions.

My “dark-horse” picks gave me a bit of saving grace. But, with Adam Boqvist emerging as an NHL-ready defenseman in his rookie season, Kris Versteeg leaving the team and eventually retiring and a three-quarters-of-a-season recall for Matthew Highmore, my “locks,” if you will, were way off.

2019–20 Rockford IceHogs postseason awards

So, how did things actually fare and who were the true standouts from the 2019–20 AHL season for the IceHogs?

Most Improved Player: Tyler Sikura

After breaking out for the IceHogs in the 2017–18 season, his first full season in the AHL, Tyler Sikura had high expectations last year to be a major contributor for Rockford and, albeit a long shot, could have pushed for a shot at the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks. Those things did not happen last season for the elder Sikura brother. Coming into this season, Tyler needed to return to the form he saw in 2017–18, where he was one of the top point producers on the team.

He enjoyed a bounce-back season in 2019–20, leading the team in points (34) and ranking second in goals (14), tied with his brother, Dylan Sikura. After Versteeg left the team in November, Tyler was named the IceHogs’ new team captain and played a major role as part of Rockford’s penalty kill this season. Sikura’s AHL contract with the organization ends this summer.

Heavy Hitter: Joseph Cramarossa

Acquired in late November, Joseph Cramarossa came into the IceHogs’ lineup and was a mainstay when healthy. An energy forward and not afraid to mix it up physically, Cramarossa led Rockford with 110 penalty minutes this season with a team-high six fighting majors. The IceHogs as a team registered 24 team fighting majors in 2019–20, the most fighting majors since the 2015–16 season when they registered 39 fights. Cramarossa had 12 points in 42 games with the IceHogs this season and is an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Unsung Hero: Gabriel Gagne

Another in-season acquisition for the IceHogs that made an impact was Gabriel Gagne. Acquired on loan from the Allen Americans in the ECHL in January, Gagne quickly showed the scoring ability along with physical presence that made him a second-round pick for the Ottawa Sentors back at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. In 21 games with Rockford, Gagne tallied 12 points and was given top-six minutes and power play opportunities down the back half of the schedule. Prior to the season being put on hold, Gagne signed a one-year AHL contract with the IceHogs for the 2020–21 season.

Defenseman of the Year: Lucas Carlsson

For the second straight season, Lucas Carlsson led the Rockford IceHogs in scoring for defensemen. The second-year player from Sweden finished the season with 26 points in 48 games for Rockford, good for a tie for fourth on the team in scoring with MacKenzie Entwistle. Carlsson’s 26 points was 11 more than the next-highest defenseman this season, ahead of rookie Nicolas Beaudin.

When healthy this season, Carlsson was a regular for head coach Derek King in his defensive rotation and was regularly used on the power play. Carlsson’s confidence this season was evident, as he began to take more chances offensively and earned himself his first NHL call up to the Chicago Blackhawks. The former fourth-round pick played in six games for Chicago and recorded one assist, averaging just over 14 minutes of ice time.

Rookie of the Year: Brandon Hagel

On a team that at one point this season boasted top-end rookie prospects Adam Boqvist, MacKenzie Entwistle, Nicolas Beaudin and Philipp Kurashev, none were more impactful for the IceHogs than Brandon Hagel. The former sixth-round pick by the Buffalo Sabres signed an entry-level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks at the end of the 2018–19 season, skating in the final eight games of the AHL season with the IceHogs and notching one assist.

In the 2019–20 season, his first full professional season, Hagel led the IceHogs in goals with 19, finished third on the team with 31 points in 59 games played and his 126 shots on goal were second on the team behind Dylan Sikura. In the Blackhawks’ development camp, Hagel showed a high motor and ability to get to the net to create scoring chances and those skills translated to the ice at the AHL level. Hagel earned three recalls to the Chicago Blackhawks this season, but was only able to get into one game at the NHL level before the season was paused.

Most Valuable Player: Collin Delia

About a month into the season, calling Collin Delia an IceHogs Team MVP candidate was a bit of a long shot. Delia started the season off on the wrong foot, dropping five of his first seven starts of the season and posting a sub-.900 save percentage. After sitting behind Kevin Lankinen and Matt Tomkins for a three-week stretch from mid-November to the beginning of December, Delia turned both his and the IceHogs’ season around.

Going 14–8–1 from Dec. 3 to the end of the season, Delia was the backbone of Rockford’s push in the second half of the season to get into the Calder Cup Playoff picture. He finished the year with a 16–13–1 record on the year with a career-high three shutouts. The IceHogs rolled a healthy three-goalie rotation this season for most of the year, up until Lankinen’s season was ended due to a shoulder injury, and Delia was the season leader in net with the highest marks in save percentage (.912) and goals against average (2.66). The California native ranked in the top 10 of the AHL for qualified goaltenders in shutouts (three), wins (16) and shootout save percentage (.875, 14/16).

2019–20 epilogue

It truly is a shame that the Rockford IceHogs’ season was cut short during the Calder Cup Playoff push. With 62 points in 63 games, the IceHogs were tied for fourth in the Central Division with the Chicago Wolves, only they would be on the outside of the postseason due to points percentage. But, with nine games remaining, who is to say that the IceHogs could not have had one hot streak left in them to make it into the playoffs?

There are plenty of questions, both on and off the ice, facing the IceHogs and the American Hockey League heading into the 2020–21 season. But, when we do eventually get back to regular games, whenever that may be, there is certainty that the IceHogs can be contenders. Given the talent that will return next season, Rockford is set up to be a team to keep on the radar.

I will leave you with a final quote from Andrews’ interview on Sirius XM radio: “Despite the uncertainty, we’ll be okay.”

Blackhawks team physician Dr. Michael Terry announced that forwards Andrew Shaw and Zack Smith will miss the remainder of the season. Shaw has been out because of concussion protocol and Smith, who had been out of the lineup with a lacerated hand, will also undergo back surgery on March 6, 2020.

In a corresponding move, Blackhawks recall forward Brandon Hagel from the Rockford IceHogs on an emergency basis. Hagel has 30 points (19 goals, 11 assists) in 55 games with Rockford, this season. His 19 goals are first among Rockford players and his 30 points are third on the team.

In his final season with Red Deer, Hagel tallied 41 goals and 102 points to finish fourth in points in the WHL. Since then, the Alberta native has worked his way into the forefront of the Chicago Blackhawks’ prospect system, as he is on pace for one of the most prolific rookie scoring seasons in Rockford IceHogs AHL franchise history.

Hagel’s stock on the rise with IceHogs

This should come as no surprise to those that know Hagel’s game. After finishing with 279 points in 259 WHL games, Hagel was expected to produce points at the professional level.

“Coming in last year for eight games and getting some touches in was good for me,” Hagel said about joining the IceHogs last season. “Got to come here and get used to the people and the players, so when I came back this year, I knew more of what to expect and that allows me to play the way I need to play.”

Hagel’s comfort level with the IceHogs has translated into a high-energy style of play that has been rewarded by head coach Derek King this season, affording Hagel meaningful ice time and opportunities on both the power play and the penalty kill.

For a rookie coming into the professional ranks, the transition from junior hockey can take a physical toll on a young player. But, with his style of play, Hagel has found it easier than most to make the jump to the next level.

“There’s a lot of new things you learn through recovery and nutrition and how important that is,” Hagel said. “As a rookie, you’re kind of on your own now, living on your own, so you have to figure things out now for yourself. We have a great leadership group on this team that is really on top of those things, so that has made my transition as easy as it can be.”

What may be a surprise to IceHogs and Blackhawks fans alike are both Hagel’s work ethic and skills away from the puck.

His ability to put up points, as well as apply pressure defensively, kill penalties and play with an edge has allowed him to separate himself from the pack in the Blackhawks’ prospect system. His work this season did not go unnoticed by the parent club and Hagel received his first NHL recall in January.

“I don’t feel like my work away from the puck is underrated,” Hagel said. “People notice that and it’s continued to be a part of my game as a whole. My work ethic is the No. 1 thing that I have to focus on. Obviously, people notice it and I’m putting up numbers, too, so that always helps.”

While he did not get to make his full NHL debut during his first NHL recall, Hagel still took away a vote of confidence from the Blackhawks organization after getting the opportunity to learn from the pros in Chicago.

“It was nice just to even go up there and just get comfortable around the guys and staff,” Hagel said. “Everyone was so welcoming and that made it easier for me to do what I needed when I was up there, especially when it’s your first time up and you don’t really know what to expect. It’s just good to know what I have to do to get back there and hopefully get that opportunity again.”

On a roster that began the season so inexperienced, and has endured a heavy amount of turnover due to injuries and recalls, Hagel has been one of the most consistent offensive factors for the IceHogs.

“There’s always going to be change,” Hagel said. “We’ve been through a lot of it this year and it’s just one of those things that you have to let it roll. Can’t think about it too much and stick to your game.”

Hagel and the IceHogs went through a difficult month of January, which snowballed from an equally difficult end of December. Going 3–14–2 from Dec. 21 to Feb. 1, the IceHogs have fallen from second in the AHL Central Division to sixth. While somehow keeping within striking distance of a Calder Cup Playoff spot through that stretch, the IceHogs have won back-to-back games heading into their next contest on Saturday and regained their confidence.

Rockford will need to continue to lean on Hagel’s offensive production, which has him third on the team with 25 points and leading the way with 17 goals this season. Hagel’s 17 tallies rank in a tie for fourth among rookies scorers and he is on pace for 28 goals this season, which would set the IceHogs’ AHL franchise record for rookies.

One piece missing from that recipe, as of late, has been Collin Delia. After starting the season as the number three goalie in the Chicago Blackhawks organization, Delia has failed to show the form he displayed last season when he finished as one of the top goalies in the AHL. On Tuesday night, Delia would return to the Rockford net for his first start since November 15. He would make 37 saves in the effort and the IceHogs would top the Moose, 4-2.

IceHogs win physical battle over Moose

Starting a game on time is a well-known troupe in the hockey world. But cliché or not, the IceHogs started Tuesday night’s tilt against the Moose right on time. Drawing an early first period penalty, Rockford got on the board first thanks to a nice move right at the goal-crease by MacKenzie Entwistle to score his fifth of the season. In his first start in net since November 15, Collin Delia helped start the powerplay breakout for the IceHogs and recorded his first professional point with a secondary assist on the play.

Less than a minute later, the Moose were able to tie the game back up at 1-1, but the tie wouldn’t last long. Joni Tuulola scored his second goal of the year to give the IceHogs a 2-1 lead, blasting a shot from the blue line for the tally. But much like the 1-0 lead for Rockford, the 2-1 lead wouldn’t last long as the Moose battled back again in the opening period, scoring on their first powerplay chance of the game. The teams combined for 29 shots (17-12 Manitoba) and four goals in a physical first period of action.

While the second period didn’t see the same scoring action as the first, the pace and physicality continued all the same in the middle frame. Rockford had a golden chance to break the 2-2 tie mid-way through the second period as Tuulola came out of the penalty box and had a breakaway chance, only to lose his footing and crash into Manitoba goaltender Mikhail Berdin.

Rockford’s hard work on the penalty kill in the second period would later be rewarded. After killing-off their second penalty of the period, Brandon Hagel was sprung off the left-wing side and scored a beautiful forehand to backhand goal to give the IceHogs the 3-2 lead late in the second period. Hagel’s sixth goal of the season, he leads all Rockford rookies in goal-scoring this season. Rockford would hold their third lead of the game into the second intermission, looking for their ninth win of the season at home with twenty minutes left to play.

Playing a major role in the IceHogs keeping the 3-2 lead alive was Delia, specifically on a mid-period powerplay chance for the Moose. Rockford was able to thwart the Manitoba attack thanks in large part to a pad save by Delia, denying the Moose a two-on-one chance. Following the penalty-kill, Tyler Sikura had a breakaway chance but could not convert, It was the third breakaway opportunity for Rockford following a penalty kill, with Hagel converting the only goal.

Nick Moutrey would convert an empty net goal and the IceHogs came away 4-2 winners over the Moose. Delia with a vintage performance as the IceHogs win their third in-a-row. They are now 12-0-1 when scoring three or more goals in a game and are 5-0-0 when MacKenzie Entwistle scores a goal. Fun facts.

What’s Next?

The Rockford IceHogs are back in action on Friday night as they travel to take on the Grand Rapids Griffins. Puck drop for Friday is set for 6 p.m. CST at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Rockford holds a 2-2-0 record against the Griffins this season. Following Friday’s action, the IceHogs return home for a Saturday night contest against the Milwaukee Admirals. Saturday night’s game is also set for a 6 p.m. CST puck drop at the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford. It is the first meeting between the IceHogs and Admirals this season, with the teams squaring-off twelve times this year.

IceHogs take three of six points over Texas road trip

Starting on Saturday in Cedar Park against the Stars, the IceHogs’ offense was on full display in a 7-6 loss via the shootout. The six goals was the third time this season that the IceHogs have hit the 6-goal mark or better. Highlighting the effort on Saturday was a three-point breakout game for rookie defenseman Adam Boqvist. After returning to the IceHogs from the Chicago Blackhawks, Boqvist tallied three assists against the Stars, including a helper on the game-tying goal from Brandon Hagel late in the third period. John Quenneville, Anton Wedin, Alexandre Fortin, and Tyler Sikura all added multi-point efforts along with Boqvist against the Stars. Kevin Lankinen made 29 saves on 35 shots faced, but allowed two goals in the shootout in the loss.

For a follow-up effort, Boqvist notched another multi-assist game as the IceHogs traveled to take on the San Antonio Rampage in the first of a two-game set between the teams. The Rampage took a 2-0 first period lead, forcing the IceHogs to chase the game for the final two periods of action. Mid-way through the third period, Tyler Sikura scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season to cut in to the San Antonio lead. Rockford pushed for the game-tying goal and with just three seconds to spare in regulation, Dylan Sikura tallied the equalizer and sent the game into overtime. In the extra frame, Jacob Nilsson quickly found the back of the net on a breakaway attempt to give the IceHogs the 3-2 win. Matt Tomkins made 21 saves on 23 shots faced in the overtime win, giving him a 3-1-0 record on the year with a 2.48 GAA and a .915 save percentage. Adam Boqvist had the primary assists on the Tyler Sikura goal and the game-winner from Nilsson, giving him six points through nine games played at the time. He has six points through ten games this season for the IceHogs.

After a Monday off-day, the IceHogs and Rampage went toe-to-toe again in another tightly contested affair. The teams split the first four goals of the game, scoring one each in the first and second periods. The Rampage would get the game-winning goal in the third period and the IceHogs were unable to find the same late-game magic they had two nights before. Kevin Lankinen had the start in net and made 37 saves on 40 shots faced, seeing his record move to 4-2-1 on the year with a 2.69 GAA and a .919 save percentage.

Following the road trip, the IceHogs hold a 9-8-1 record on the year with 18 games played, the fewest in the AHL Central Division, sitting in sixth-place. Based on point-percentage, the IceHogs would be in fourth-place and Central Division playoff position. Rockford was three-for-seven on the powerplay over the road trip and 10-for-15 on the penalty-kill. For the season, the IceHogs rank 26th in the AHL in powerplay percentage (11.4) and last in the league in penalty-kill percentage (74.0).

What’s Next?

Rockford Is back in action after American Thanksgiving, playing at home on Black Friday. The contest is set for a 7 p.m. CST puck drop against the Chicago Wolves. The IceHogs have a 4-0-0 record against the Wolves this season in the Illinois Lottery Cup Rivalry series. Following Friday’s game, the IceHogs host the Grand Rapids Griffins in a 5 p.m. CST start time on Saturday. The Griffins have the advantage over the IceHogs, winning two of three games between the teams this season.

In typical preseason fashion, more of the stars play in the home games than in the road games. Dylan Strome and Alex DeBrincat both played last night in Detroit, so they were off tonight. The lines were as follows:

First period:

As fans settled into their seats and continually gazed at the brand new scoreboard, the Blackhawks trotted out the top line to start the game. Alexander Nylander won the lottery for the game, starting on the left wing with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. 

Roughly five minutes into the contest, Toews had the best opportunity of the early minutes with a partial breakaway. Unfortunately, after a spectacular forehand backhand move, Toews could not finish and the game remained deadlocked at 0–0.

Later in the period, with about five minutes remaining, the Red Wings earned a power play after a Dennis Gilbert hooking penalty. However, the Blackhawks were able to escape without any damage from the Red Wings’ man advantage. 

But, another power play chance for the Red Wings spelled trouble for the Blackhawks. With just under two minutes remaining in the period, Detroit forward Filip Zadina placed a shot toward the net from the right slot. The shot never made it to the net. Instead, after a Seabrook block, the shot bounced perfectly onto the stick of Taro Hirose at the left face off dot. Hirose finished the play and scored the opening goal of the game for the visitors. 

The Red Wings took their 1–0 lead, as well as a 10–6 shots on goal advantage, into the first intermission at 1901 W. Madison St. 

Second period:

Right out the gate, the Red Wings generated the first good opportunity of the period. Joe Veleno found himself wide open on Crawford’s right side. Valeno placed a shot up near Crawford’s shoulder, but the Chicago netminder was able to make a solid save and keep the young forward off the scoresheet.

Roughly two minutes after the Veleno chance, the Blackhawks finally took advantage of a Red Wings mistake. After Tyler Sikura dumped the puck in deep, Detroit goalie Jonathan Bernier mishandled the puck behind the net. Brandon Hagel was able to steal the puck below the goal line after an aggressive forecheck and jam the puck toward the net. The puck squeaked through Bernier, who was not completely set in his net, and tied the game at 1–1.

Just after the halfway point of the period, the Blackhawks struck again. A Toews outlet pass from the defensive zone found Nylander at the near blue line. Nylander gave the puck to Kane at the red line and Kane found some space in the offensive zone. The Red Wings were concentrating on the three Chicago forwards and completely forgot about Duncan Keith, who jumped into the play. Kane found Keith and the two time Norris Trophy winner found the back of the net with his shot to give the Blackhawks the 2–1 lead.

The Blackhawks entered intermission with the one goal lead over their Original Six foe.

Third period:

The best chance of the third period came at around the seven minute mark. Adam Boqvist danced around a defender in beautiful fashion—dragging the puck between his legs in the process—and placed a light shot toward Bernier’s glove side, but was unable to capitalize on the attempt.

The Blackhawks continued to pepper Bernier with shots all night long. Detroit had a few quality chances, but each time Crawford stood tall and made the big save. 

The Red Wings tried to tie the game late in the third with the extra attacker but could not find a way past Crawford. The Blackhawks sealed the 2–1 lead and captured their first preseason win at the United Center.

Quick hits:

• The Crow’s nest: Corey Crawford looked really strong in his first preseason action. He is certainly still a question mark, given his recent injury history, but if he can sustain his top level of play for roughly 40 games, then he and Lehner will be the best goaltending duo in the league. After allowing only one goal on 24 shots, it is safe to say Crawford made an impact in his first preseason outing. 
• The lottery spot: Alexander Nylander hit the jackpot on Wednesday, flanking Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane on Chicago’s top line. The young Swede picked up this third point of the preseason on Duncan Keith’s goal and is continuing to make the front office’s decision very hard in about 10 days or so. He has played very well and will likely get a chance to prove himself on the opening day roster for the Blackhawks. Maybe a change of scenery is just what the doctor ordered for the younger Nylander brother.

The Blackhawks remain in Chicago and await the Boston Bruins on Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST and can be seen on NBCSCH+.

After initially going down 1–0, the team of future Blackhawks stormed back in the first period to take a 4–1 lead. Detroit fought back in the second period and tied the game. Eventually, Blackhawks 2018 first round draft pick Adam Boqvist scored from a tight angle, just 43 seconds into the overtime period, to give the visitors the win.

Chicago looked a little rusty to begin the game and Ryan Kuffner took full advantage on the power play at the 3:10 mark of the first period, beating Chicago goaltender Alexis Gravel. That was when the Blackhawks came storming back with goals by Mikael Hakkarainen, 2019 first round draft pick Kirby Dach, MacKenzie Entwistle and Jack Ramsey.

Detroit took advantage of five Blackhawks penalties in the second period and scored power play goals by Jarid Lukosevicius and Joe Veleno. Velano also scored an unassisted goal after picking the pocket of Brandon Hagel in the Blackhawks’ zone.

Following a scoreless third period, the game went to overtime. Boqvist took advantage of goalie Kaden Fulcher, as he left just enough space to beat Fulcher under the crossbar and win the game. The goal was assisted by Dach and Hagel. Hagel was a huge bright spot for the Blackhawks, wearing the “A” on his sweater and assisting on two additional goals earlier in the game. After one game, the former Red Deer Rebel leads the tournament in points scored.

Gravel saved 27 of 31 shots for the win, also making two highlight reel saves in the third period to keep the game tied.

The Blackhawks will face the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday at 2 p.m. Central and the St. Louis Blues on Monday at 4:30 p.m. Central. The tournament wraps up Tuesday with the championship and other placement games.

Nicolas Beaudin

Often an afterthought in the Blackhawks’ 2018 draft class, Nicolas Beaudin should not be left in the shadow of Boqvist for very long. In his last two seasons in the QMJHL with the Drummondville Voltiguers, Beaudin tallied 125 points in 122 regular season games, while also posting 19 points in 26 QMJHL playoff games. Beaudin was also named a QMJHL Second Team All-Star in both of his last two seasons with Drummondville. Seeing a decent improvement in his ability to defend in his own zone, on top of his already advanced offensive abilities, he is a top candidate to get significant minutes for the IceHogs defensive core. In a small sample of work, Beaudin and Boqvist were paired together in prospect camp, with Beaudin working as a defensive cover for the more free-wheeling Boqvist. That pairing could become a regularity for the IceHogs early in the season.

The MVP of the prospect camp scrimmage last month, Brandon Hagel has a lot of promising flash. He uses a good combination of speed and snap on the offensive side of the ice to create scoring chances for him and his teammates. He got a taste of the AHL last season after posting a career-high 102 points in his final WHL season with the Red Deer Rebels. He will likely get a chance to play some power play minutes for the IceHogs and could pair well with longtime Red Deer teammate Reese Johnson in a middle-six forward role with Rockford.

MacKenzie Entwistle

On and off the ice, MacKenzie Entwistle seems more than ready for the jump to the professional ranks. After back-to-back OHL championships with the Hamilton Bulldogs and Guelph Storm, Entwistle makes the move to the Rockford IceHogs having a generous amount of praise being placed upon him this summer from Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman and head coaches Jeremy Colliton and Derek King. His commitment to playing a two-way game paired with his favorable size as a forward make Entwistle an intriguing rookie to watch this season. He will likely get some looks on both the power play and penalty kill for the IceHogs, but may stick more in a penalty-kill role, given the high-end offensive skill depth that Rockford could rotate on the man advantage.

Philipp Kurashev

Speaking of offensive skill depth, the IceHogs got a small taste of what forward Philipp Kurashev brings to the table late last season. While he did not get on the scoresheet in his first three professional games, Kurashev showed a small sample of what made him a prolific option for the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL. Kurashev’s shot is his best attribute and has started to pair it well with improvements to his skating ability and vision on the ice. A decent-sized forward at 6-foot-1 and just under 200 pounds, Kurashev is a likely candidate to lead IceHogs rookies in scoring this season.

Finally, bookending the list with another defenseman is Chad Krys. He joined the IceHogs late last season and was thrust right into significant minutes for Rockford as they attempted to push for a Calder Cup Playoffs spot. While the IceHogs fell short, Krys tallied four assists in nine games and will likely return to be a top minutes-eater for the IceHogs this season. One of the more seasoned of the rookies on the roster, Krys has improved his all-around play over his three-year NCAA career with Boston University after being a top offensive threat when he was drafted in 2016 by the Blackhawks. Do not be surprised if Krys sees time on both the power play and penalty kill for Rockford to begin the season.

Each prospect’s original rating average is listed in parentheses after their name, along with a brief synopsis of why they fell in the tier they did.

Brandon Hagel (4.333)
The majority of our panel agreed Hagel would be a fringe NHL player who has the capabilities needed to contribute in a depth role, but one member felt Hagel’s upside could be as high as a middle-six role. The most valuable player of the Blackhawks’ development camp scrimmage possesses a variety of skills in his game, but will need to fine tune them to get to the next level. Hagel will likely spend the 2019–20 season with the Rockford IceHogs after a breakout 2018–19 campaign with the Red Deer Rebels.

Antti Saarela (4.333)
The 2019 fourth-round pick will be a project, but showed flashes of his ability in development camp. The younger brother of fellow Blackhawk prospect Aleksi Saarela possesses a good shot, but will need to improve his skating to be effective in the NHL. Saarela will stay in Finland for the 2019–20 season, where he will join Ilves after spending his entire career thus far with Lukko.

Dominic Basse (4.5)
Basse adds impressive size to the Blackhawks’ prospect pool in the blue paint, measuring 6-foot-6 at just 18 years of age. Basse dominated in 2018–19 for the Selects Hockey Academy 18U team, compiling a 1.91 goals against average and .924 save percentage in 42 games played. The Colorado College commit has not yet announced his plans on where he will play in 2019–20, but perhaps the most likely scenario would see him join the Youngstown Phantoms in the USHL, as the Phantoms hold his USHL rights. Basse will be an interesting project to keep an eye on in the future.

Artur Kayumov (4.5)
Kayumov is among the most polarizing prospects in the Blackhawks’ system. A skilled and passionate left winger, Kayumov has yet to break out in his time playing in the KHL in his native Russia, tallying just 13 points in 46 games for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in 2018–19. Despite this, his skill set would likely allow him to be a contributor in the NHL, though this looks less and less likely with each passing season for the 2016 second-round pick. Kayumov will return to Lokomotiv Yaroslavl for 2019–20.

Josh Ess (4.667)
Ess has made strides since being selected in the seventh round in 2017. In his time since being drafted, Ess has established himself as a steady presence on Wisconsin’s blue line. The Minnesota native moves the puck well, but needs to keep working on his overall game to have a chance at playing in the NHL. Even if Ess can take the next step in his development with a big year for what is expected to be a potent Badger lineup in 2019–20, he would need to jump over a slew of other young defensemen in the system to don the Indian head down the road.

Jakub Galvas (4.833)
Galvas is known as a puck-moving defenseman, something the Blackhawks have plenty of in their system. Despite having others ahead of him on the organizational depth chart, Galvas could break through for NHL playing time if he rounds out his game. The 2017 fifth-rounder has become a mainstay on international tournament teams for his native Czech Republic, including a pair of appearances in the World Junior Championships. A longtime member of the HC Olomouc organization, Galvas will head to Finland to play for Jukurit for the next step of his development.

Mikael Hakkarainen (4.833)
Hakkarainen dominated the USHL last season, tallying 19 goals and 28 assists in 42 games with the Muskegon Lumberjacks after leaving Providence College following just one game at the beginning of the season. With little left to prove at the junior level, the 2018 fifth-rounder will turn pro to likely join the Rockford IceHogs for the 2019–20 season. At times, the Finn looks like he has a promising future in a depth role, but he will need to transfer his scoring ability at the junior level to the pro ranks—or adjust his style of play—in order to earn a regular NHL spot.

Reese Johnson (4.833)
After spending the majority of the 2018–19 season as the captain for the Red Deer Rebels, Johnson finished the year in Rockford. Johnson improved his offensive numbers in his final year playing juniors, nearing a point-per-game pace with 27 goals and 26 assists in 67 games. The undrafted free agent signing then posted four assists in his six games with the IceHogs. Though Johnson finally started showing his offensive ability last season, he will likely be relied on as a more defensive forward should he make it to the NHL. Johnson will return to Rockford for the 2019–20 campaign.

Cole Moberg (4.833)
The 2019 seventh-round pick broke out in a big way for a bad Prince George Cougars team in 2018–19, blowing away his previous career-high marks with 13 goals, 27 assists and 40 points. Our panel was relatively split on the 6-foot-3 defender, as some felt he could become a regular bottom-pairing option in the NHL down the road, while some feel it is too early in his development to project a ceiling of that nature. Moberg will return to the Cougars for 2019–20, where he will be relied upon as a leader on and off the ice for Prince George.

Andrei Altybarmakyan (5.167)
Another wildcard within the Blackhawks’ system, Altybarmakyan boasts an impressive offensive skill set. However, the 2017 third-rounder has yet to put it together in the KHL, posting just six points in 38 games last season with HK Sochi. Of course, the Russian factor is also in effect here, as Altybarmakyan may very well never play in North America. Even if Altybarmakyan does play in North America, he would likely need to prove he can be somewhat reliable defensively to earn a chance at regular NHL ice time.

Ivan Nalimov (5.167)
Another Russian with dwindling likelihood of playing in North America, Nalimov has been the ultimate hit-or-miss goaltender in the KHL. At times looking like a legitimate NHL goaltender while resembling a headcase piece of Swiss cheese at others, the 2014 sixth-round pick will enter his sixth KHL season in 2019–20 with his sixth team. While Nalimov has expressed an interest to come play in North America in the past, the Blackhawks have not reciprocated the desire. It appears likely at this point Nalimov will not have a future in the NHL unless his rights are dealt and another team gives him a chance.

Joni Tuulola (5.167)
Tuulola played his first full season of North American hockey for the IceHogs in 2018–19, posting four goals and 10 assists in 52 games. The 2015 sixth-round selection has generally been a defense-first blueliner, but has shown an ability to chip in offensively as well. However, with as many offensive defensemen as the Blackhawks have in their system already, Tuulola will need to focus on being rock-solid in his own end if he wants a chance to play in the NHL. Tuulola will return to Rockford’s defensive core for the 2019–20 season.

Blackhawks development camp comes to a close

As the scrimmage started, it was evident in team play that players like Nicolas Beaudin, Adam Boqvist and Philipp Kurashev have a higher level to their game than most. Also making waves early on in the day were forwards Brandon Hagel and Josiah Slavin, who teamed up for a pair of goals in the first period of play.

The highlight of the day came early in the first period, and it came in dramatic fashion from Boqvist.

That highlight is going to hold a lot of people over for hockey content for the summer. Boqvist was paired with Beaudin on the red team for the scrimmage and their play off of each other generated a lot of pace and offensive chances for their squad.

Not to be outdone in the first period, 2019 third overall selection Kirby Dach made his impression on the scrimmage late in the period, finishing off a breakaway chance on goaltender Alexis Gravel.

And then, Dach did this to Jake Ryczek, the day after Ryczek signed an AHL contract with the Rockford IceHogs.

Throughout the week of development camp, more players stood out on their own than in years past for development camp. From top to bottom, the roster of players in camp show that the Blackhawks’ prospect system has a level of depth to it, at all positions, which it has lacked in recent years. Notably, the 2018 and 2019 draft classes have shown a decent amount of promise across the board. From Boqvist and Dach to Slavin and Gravel, there is a lot to be excited about in the future of the Blackhawks’ organization.

I’ve always said he is underrated on the defensive side of his game. He has some great qualities defensively; he’s such a smart player, and it’s not just one sided with him.”

“He’s such a strong kid; you saw he was able to chase down a guy (Teply) and lift his stick and take the puck away; just already the strength in him and the frame he has left to grow into. He’s an exciting player, a great kid, he fit into the group and showed a willingness and eagerness to do what he needs to get to the next level.”

Brandon Hagel on first experience in Blackhawks camp:

“It was good to be here, good to meet everyone and put names to faces. Gave me a bit more confidence going into camp. … I feel like I was able to stick to my game and use my speed—one of my biggest assets—and build off of the other skilled players in camp.”

Hagel on going through the development process with former Red Deer teammate Reese Johnson:

“It’s pretty cool. Not many people get to come with their best friend that they have played with the last four years. Having him here obviously gives you more of a comfort level; you’re with one of the people you’ve know for a long time and you’re getting to meet new people together and makes it easier as it goes on.”

Boqvist on making an impression on the Blackhawks’ staff in camp:

“The only thing I can do is be myself. I can’t be Patrick Kane or Duncan Keith or anyone. I have to be myself and play good.”

Boqvist on his comfort level going through a second development camp:

“You know the stuff now. You’re not that nervous out there; you’re just excited to get back and show them that you are one year better and older. (I am) just trying to be confident out there and play my game.”

What’s next?

For the Blackhawks’ community, the 12th annual Chicago Blackhawks Convention will be held from July 26–28, 2019, at the Hilton Chicago. Following that, the Traverse City rookie tournament will take place sometime in the first two weeks of August, when most of the players who were featured this week will compete together in Traverse City, Michigan.

Rockford IceHogs exit interviews

The Rockford IceHogs put a cap on their season with their annual end-of-the-year exit interviews. After finishing the regular season in seventh place in the AHL Central Division, the IceHogs missed the Calder Cup Playoffs for the second time in the last three years. Paired with the Chicago Blackhawks missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second year in a row, this year marks the first time since becoming the AHL affiliate of the Blackhawks that Chicago and Rockford both missed the postseason.

There are a number of reasons why there is not playoff hockey being played in Rockford this season: coaching changes, injuries, recalls and assignments of key players, etc., but the IceHogs simply could not support their stellar team defense with enough scoring on a regular basis to get them over the hump and into the Calder Cup Playoffs. The league’s best goalie group of Collin Delia, Kevin Lankinen and Anton Forsberg were regularly let down by the league’s lowest scoring offense. Rockford finished the season with a 30–2–2 record when scoring three or more goals in a game, while on the flip side, lost 19 games this year when holding their opponents to two or fewer goals in a game.

But let’s not beat a dead horse any longer.

Interim head coach Derek King

IceHogs head coach Derek King did pretty much as well as he could have been asked after taking over the IceHogs from Jeremy Colliton in early November. King inherited the reigns of a 6–3–3 IceHogs team on Nov. 6 and finished the season with a 35–31–10 record, a 29–28–7 record with King as head coach. As of Wednesday, King’s status with the organization is still undecided, but one would figure he managed his position well enough to be given a chance to remove the interim tag from his coaching position.

Dylan Sikura (46 games played, 17 goals, 18 assists)

One of the brightest spots for the IceHogs this season was Dylan Sikura‘s emergence as a force to reckon with at the AHL level. While his well-hyped arrival in the Blackhawks organization has not lived up to the billing at the NHL level (11 points in 38 NHL games, no goals), Sikura tied Peter Holland for the highest points per game rate for the IceHogs this season at 0.76 points per game. In his first full professional year, Sikura finished third on the team in scoring, having played nearly 20 fewer games than the other Rockford scorers in the top five. He also finished eighth in rookie goal-scoring with 17 tallies on the year. Sikura becomes a restricted free agent this summer after completing a two-year deal with the Blackhawks organization.

Jordan Schroeder (62 games played, 19 goals, 26 assists)

Veteran forward Jordan Schroeder had one of his best AHL seasons of his career in 2018–19 with the IceHogs. Finishing with a career-high 45 points, Schroeder was consistently one of the most relied-upon players for the IceHogs. Paired with Holland down the stretch of the season, Schroeder found scoring chemistry with his newly acquired teammate and it showed. Over his final 25 games of the season, Schroeder tallied 21 points, including a five-game point streak and four multi-point games. Schroeder becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer after completing his one-year deal with the Blackhawks organization. 

Henri Jokiharju (30 games played, two goals, 15 assists)

While there is some debate whether or not Henri Jokiharju actually needed to play with the Rockford IceHogs this season, it showed that his time in the AHL made an impact on him on the ice. Jokiharju finished second on the team in scoring for defensemen (excluding Darren Raddysh), having played half as many games as the leading scorer in Lucas Carlsson. Jokiharju logged heavy minutes with the iceHogs and played in all situations. His 0.57 point per game pace was the highest on the team for defensemen and his plus-7 rating was tied with Sikura for the best rating on the roster. Jokiharju will be joining Finland’s World Championships camp this Summer. Jokiharju has two years remaining on his entry-level contract with the Blackhawks.

Luke Johnson (53 games played, 18 goals, 13 assists) 

After starting the season with the Chicago Blackhawks, Luke Johnson joined the IceHogs in late November for the remainder of the season, save for two games in December. Johnson set new AHL career-highs in goals and points this season, playing all over the lineup. One of the more consistent players on the roster this season, Johnson’s physical aspect of his game seemed unchanged as his ability to score and generate scoring chances improved from last season. Johnson becomes a restricted free agent this summer after completing his entry-level contract with the Blackhawks organization.

Collin Delia (26 games played, 13–8–4, 2.48 goals against average, 0.922 save percentage)

Along with Sikura, another major bright spot for the IceHogs and Blackhawks this season was the continued improvement and development of goaltender Collin Delia. After joining the organization last season and ascending from the ECHL Indy Fuel to the Chicago Blackhawks in one season, Delia again played major roles for both the Blackhawks and IceHogs. Finishing this season with the second-best save percentage in the AHL, Delia, along with Lankinen and Forsberg, made up the best goaltending group in the league this season based on save percentage. Many have speculated that he projects to be the future No. 1 goaltender in the Blackhawks organization and if he continues his development trajectory, he will be. Delia signed a three-year, $3 million contract extension with the Chicago Blackhawks this season, which kicks in next year.

Dennis Gilbert (63 games played, five goals, nine assists)

Winner of the team’s ‘Most Improved’ award this season, defenseman Dennis Gilbert truly came a long way from the beginning of the season. His confidence grew as the year progressed and his ice time increased. At the beginning of the year, Gilbert seemed to do little more than throw his weight around on the IceHogs’ blue line. But as they year went on, he began to open up more in the offensive zone while continuing to be a menace defensively. Gilbert ranked third on the active roster for scoring defensemen and led the team with seven fighting majors. Gilbert has two years remaining on his entry-level contract with the Blackhawks.

Matthew Highmore (12 games played, three goals, six assists) 

The 2018–19 season could have been much different for the Rockford IceHogs had Matthew Highmore been healthy the full year. After tallying seven points over his first eight games of the year, Highmore was lost to a shoulder injury for nearly five months. He returned at the beginning of April, only to re-injure the shoulder and not finish the season on the ice for the IceHogs. Highmore had a lot of promise heading into this season, having set the AHL franchise rookie goal scoring record in 2017–18. Highmore probably would have been like Sikura was this season, up and down with the Blackhawks had he been healthy, but his games lost for the IceHogs truly had an impact across the board. Highmore has one year remaining on his entry-level contract with the Blackhawks.

Anton Forsberg (32 games played, 15–15–2, 2.64 goals against average, 0.919 save percentage)

Much of what was said about Delia before can be repeated for Anton Forsberg this season. Consistently under-supported offensively, Forsberg took the majority of starts for the IceHogs this season after beginning the year as the backup in Chicago. His .919 save percentage finished as the fourth-best in the AHL this season. Forsberg becomes a restricted free agent this summer after completing a two-year contract with the Blackhawks he signed in the summer of 2017.

Victor Ejdsell (61 games played, 12 goals, 17 assists)

It is hard to label Victor Ejdsell‘s 2018–19 season a complete disappointment, but the expectations on him heading into the year certainly did not help his cause. Many, including myself, felt Ejdsell had a better than 50–50 chance of making the Chicago Blackhawks’ NHL roster coming out of training camp. He did not, nor did he receive a recall to the Blackhawks all season. Ejdsell dealt with injuries at times this year and only recently had found his stride within the offense. He still can show flashes of the scoring and playmaking ability that made him an intriguing prospect for the organization, but putting it all together consistently remains his issue. Ejdsell becomes a restricted free agent this summer after completing his two-year entry-level contract that he signed with the Nashville Predators in May of 2017.

Andrew Campbell (64 games played, three goals, five assists)

While there was little chance he would suit up for the Chicago Blackhawks this season, Andrew Campbell did everything asked and expected of him for the Rockford IceHogs this season. As he mentions in his exit interview, there is more to be measured that just numbers for his success this season. He was named a playing captain for the AHL Western Conference at the AHL All Star weekend this year, a testament to his longevity and leadership at the AHL level. Campbell served as a sort of assistant coach for the IceHogs this season, providing a veteran leadership presence for a young locker room. Campbell becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer after completing his one-year contract with the Blackhawks organization.

Alexandre Fortin (47 games played, six goals, six assists)

After a quick two-game stint with the IceHogs to begin the year, Alexandre Fortin joined the Blackhawks for a generous portion of the season, skating in 24 games at the NHL level, before rejoining the IceHogs for the remainder of the season. At multiple points over the two years that Fortin has spent with the Blackhawks and IceHogs organizations, he as shown the abilities to be a dangerous speedster who can create space and scoring chances with his feet. His downfall is his ability to actually finish those chances. Over the final 21 games of the season, Fortin tallied just three points. The abilities are there, but putting them together needs to be the next step for Fortin. He has one year remaining on his entry-level contract with the Blackhawks.

Andreas Martinsen (38 games played, three goals, eight assists)

Another forward who played a good portion of his 2018–19 season with the Chicago Blackhawks before coming to the Rockford IceHogs, Andreas Martinsen was exactly as expected in his time with the IceHogs: a physical player who can now and again contribute offensively and provide a veteran presence in the locker room, same as his role last season with the IceHogs. The problem is that he has more than likely reached his ceiling with the Blackhawks and IceHogs organizations. Martinsen becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer after completing his one-year contract with the Blackhawks.

Tyler Sikura (50 games played, seven goals, 12 assists)

Similar to the season of Victor Ejdsell, Tyler Sikura‘s 2018–19 campaign was a let down. After playing his first full season in the AHL last year and finishing second in the team in goals and third in points in 2017–18, the elder Sikura failed to reach that productivity this season. Hampered by injuries for a while this year, Tyler was now and again the net-front presence he was last season, but did not reach his same ice time nor did he have the same opportunities on the power play that he had last year. Like Martinsen, Tyler has more than likely also reached his ceiling with the IceHogs organization. He becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer after completing his one-year contract with the Blackhawks.

William Pelletier (41 games played, seven goals, 10 assists)

Rockford’s 2018–19 ‘Man of the Year,’ William Pelletier bounced back from missing nearly half of the season due to injury to provide jump and energy into the lineup late in the season. Pelletier’s highlight of the year came from scoring back-to-back goals just 13 seconds apart against the San Antonio Rampage on April 2 to spark an epic comeback win. Unfortunately, those were his final two points of the season. Pelletier plays above his 5-foot-7 frame and can provide a bit of offense at the AHL level. He becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer after completing his one-year AHL contract with the Rockford IceHogs.

Terry Broadhurst (40 games played, four goals, eight assists)

Hampered by injuries this season, Terry Broadhurst‘s return to the IceHogs did not really live up to what both he or the team maybe would have hoped for. Broadhurst started hot with five points in his first eight games with the IceHogs, but tallied just seven more points over his other 32 games played this season. At 30 years old, it is unclear what the next step will be for Broadhurst in his playing career, as he becomes an unrestricted free agent after completing his one-year contract with the Rockford IceHogs.

Blake Hillman (54 games played, one goal, three assists)

In and out of the lineup for a portion of the season, Blake Hillman seemed to stall in his development in his first full professional season. After joining the organization late last season, Hillman looked like he might be in line for a shot at the NHL roster entering last summer. He never took that next step. Inconsistent with the puck on his stick, Hillman still has a lot of hockey ahead of him and could be brought back into the mix next season. He becomes a restricted free agent this summer after completing his two-year entry-level contract with the Blackhawks.

Nathan Noel (46 games played, two goals, four assists) 

It is hard to get a true read on Nathan Noel. He has dealt with injuries the last two seasons with the IceHogs, but when healthy, he looks the part of a decent depth AHL player. He mixes speed, physicality and a good touch with the puck on his stick at times, but cannot find it consistently. He has one year remaining on his entry-level contract with the Blackhawks.

Josh McArdle (19 games played, one goal, two assists)

The first Rockford-area native to play for the IceHogs, Josh McArdle was a solid ECHL call-up for Rockford this season. He was able to step in during a thin stretch of the season for the iceHogs when they were dealing with injuries to the blue line. He played 33 games with the Indy Fuel in the ECHL this season, his first full professional season. McArdle becomes an unrestricted free agent after completing his one-year contract with the Rockford IceHogs.

Dmitry Osipov (Eight games played, zero goals, two assists)

A big-bodied defenseman like Dmitry Osipov was missing from the IceHogs roster for the majority of the season. While Gilbert and Campbell both weigh in at over 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, Gilbert was the only true physical presence in the defensive group for Rockford. Osipov, coming in at 6-foot-4 and 234 pounds, provided a physical element that King wanted more of in his lineup. Osipov played in 66 games with the Indy Fuel in the ECHL this season, totaling 13 points. He becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer after completing his contract with the Indy Fuel.

Reese Johnson (Six games played, zero goals, four assists)

A late-season signing from the Red Deer Rebels of the WHL, Reese Johnson stepped into the IceHogs’ lineup late in the season alongside his Red Deer teammate Brandon Hagel and made an immediate impact. Johnson showed flashes of playmaking skill and a high motor in his small sample of AHL play. He looks to be a part of the IceHogs’ lineup next season as he begins he three-year entry-level contract with the Blackhawks.

Brandon Hagel (Eight games played, zero goals, one assist)

Speaking of Hagel, the WHL’s fourth-leading scorer this season joined the IceHogs late in the year after signing as a junior free agent in October. While he only tallied one assist in his eight games with Rockford, Hagel’s scoring ability should make him a key figure for the organization to keep an eye on going into next season. He begins a three-year entry-level contract with the Blackhawks next season.

Philipp Kurashev (Three games played, zero points)

Another late-season addition for the IceHogs this year was QMJHL standout Philipp Kurashev. After leading the Quebec Remparts in scoring this season, Kurashev joined the IceHogs for their final three games of the season. While not tallying a point in those three games, Kurashev’s 125 points over the last two seasons with Quebec, paired with him showcasing his abilities at the World Juniors this past January, make him an exciting prospect for the Blackhawks and IceHogs heading into the summer. He begins a three-year entry-level contract with the Blackhawks next season.

The IceHogs’ 20th anniversary season did not end with another run at the Calder Cup, but it was far from unsuccessful.

For the depth of the Chicago Blackhawks organization, the IceHogs have plenty of players to be excited about for the future and be encouraged for how many of them are progressing in their careers.

Roster Moves

On Tuesday afternoon, the Rockford IceHogs made two roster moves that should hopefully have a major impact on their team’s offensive production. First, the team announced that the Chicago Blackhawks had reassigned Dylan Sikura to the AHL. Sikura this season has played in 33 games with the Blackhawks and has tallied eight assists.

For the IceHogs, Sikura has played in 40 games and has 30 points. He re-joins the team on a four-game point streak. Sikura has not played with Rockford since February 2.

Second announcement coming on Tuesday was that forward Matthew Highmore had been cleared to return to the lineup. Highmore, who set the IceHogs AHL franchise record for rookie goal-scoring last season, has been out of the Rockford lineup since mid-November. Highmore went down with a shoulder injury in November and underwent surgery to repair the damage.

Before the injury, Highmore had seven points through his first eight games in Rockford. Highmore is expected in the lineup Tuesday night against the San Antonio Rampage.

Additionally for the IceHogs this week, WHL prospects Reese Johnson and Brandon Hagel made their professional debuts with the team.

Johnson, who was signed by the Blackhawks in early March, skated in 187 WHL games with the Red Deer Rebels and tallied 100 points in his Junior career. Johnson served as the Rebels’ Captain this season, tallying 53 points and finishing second on the team in scoring in his final year in the WHL.

As for Hagel, who signed with the Blackhawks in late October, his final year with Red Deer was his most productive. Scoring 102 points to lead the Rebels in scoring, Hagel ranked fourth in the WHL overall. In four seasons with Red Deer, Hagel skated in 259 games and tallied 279 career points.

With the additions of Hagel, Johnson, Highmore, Sikura, and the hot-start for another rookie in Chad Krys (3 assists in 3 games), the Rockford offense may be getting more punch down the final stretch.

Calder Cup Playoff Race

Heading into their final six games of the season, the IceHogs have a tough draw as they face a three-point gap to get to the fourth-place spot in the AHL Central Division.

Looking realistically at the final six games, Rockford would be well-off if they won five of those six games remaining. They are, essentially, not allowed to lose in regulation the rest of the season, given that their final six games are against Division opponents, with the final five games of the season coming against teams ahead of them in the standings.

What’s Next?

The Rockford IceHogs come off a weekend where they took a regulation win against the Grand Rapids Griffins and a regulation loss against the Milwaukee Admirals, and face the already eliminated from playoff contention San Antonio Rampage on Tuesday night.

The game closes a five-game homestand for the IceHogs, where they went 1-3-0 through the first four games. It will also be the second to last home game of the year for the IceHogs as they will play their following four games on the road before closing the regular season at home against the Admirals on April 14. Rockford holds a 3-3-1 record against San Antonio this season. Puck drop on Tuesday night is set for 7pm CT at the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford.

Johnson missed most of the 2015-16 season and all of 2016-17 with a serious shoulder injury, but has battled back to returned to form. Last season, in 72 games, he put up 39 points (23G, 16A) and has already put up 45 points (22G, 23A) in 62 games this season. He is second in scoring on the Red Dear team behind Blackhawks prospect Brandon Hagel, who was also signed as a free agent October 30th.

Of his 22 assists this season, 18 of them are primary assists, which would suggest he has good play making ability at the pivot position.  It remains to be seen whether the Blackhawks intend on using him at center or on the right wing.

Johnson signed a 3-year entry-level contract worth $925,000 per season and will stay in Red Deer with the Rebels for the remainder of the season but, as Mario / Aaron / Ron mentioned yesterday, he could potentially find his way to Rockford once his Western Hockey League season commences.

IceHogs Getting Healthy

As the IceHogs prepare to go into their final 17 games of the season, 16 of them will be against Central Division foes. With just four points separating fourth-place from eighth-place in the Central, every point and every player counts. Rockford faced the same kind of pressure last season, moving from sixth-place into fourth-place and sealing a spot in the Calder Cup Playoffs in the second-half of the season. A big part of that late-season surge was forward Matthew Highmore.

Highmore has been out of action since mid-November with a shoulder injury and surgery, but has returned to the ice in the last few weeks. IceHogs head coach Derek King mentioned earlier this month that Highmore was progressing on schedule and if all goes to plan, should be available to return to the lineup by the end of March. Highmore had seven points through eight games to begin the season. Last year he ranked second in scoring with 43 points and set the IceHogs AHL franchise rookie goal-scoring record with  24 goals last season.

Another IceHogs staple from the 2017-18 season that is set to return to health this weekend is forward Tyler Sikura. While his production has not been on the same level it was during the 2017-18 season, Sikura still provides a bit of veteran experience and a net-front presence that the IceHogs could use. This season, Sikura has 14 points in 33 games, but has missed the last two months with an upper-body injury. Rockford head coach Derek King will have Sikura back in the lineup as the IceHogs travel to Manitoba for back-to-back weekend games against the Moose.

The returns of both Sikura and Highmore should provide the IceHogs with some offensive pop. Rockford ranks at the bottom of the league in goals-scoring, but has seen a recent increase with the production of Henri Jokiharju, Peter Holland and Jordan Schroeder coming through in the last handful of games.

The good thing about the AHL season this time of year is that not only will teams be able to rely on their own players to try to pull them through the final stretch of the season, they also can field a number of fresh faces as the NCAA and Junior Hockey seasons come to a close in the middle/back-end of March.

College Boys Making The Jump

While the IceHogs are benefiting from players returning to health from their own roster, it doesn’t rule out players ready to make the jump from the NCAA ranks to the Pro game. Players in recent years like Anthony Louis and Luc Snuggerud have made the transition after their final year of College Hockey and have made impacts right away. For more on NCAA players who could make the jump this Spring, I turn it over to The-Rink NCAA Lead Writer, Aaron Goldschmidt.

Fredrik Olofsson (Omaha-Nebraska: 32 GP, 10 G, 21 A)

Of all the players that could be ready for professional hockey this spring, Fredrik Olofsson probably fits the bill the most. After four years of college hockey at Omaha in the NCHC, one of the NCAA’s toughest conferences, the Blackhawks 2014 4th round selection has evolved his game in several different ways.

After scoring 27 goals in the USHL with the Chicago Steel in 2015, Olofsson made his way to college hockey and would eventually change his position from wing to center. He’s always been a play-making forward, but he’s really rounded out his game during his time at Omaha. Having his best season of his college career, Olofsson has 31 points in 30 games (10G, 21A) this season. He’s been a big threat on Omaha’s powerplay and has also shown improvement in his puck control and physicality. Olofsson has always seen the ice well and had great patience with the puck which makes him a great candidate to sign pro after this season.

Ryan Shea (Northeastern: 33 GP, 3 G, 10 A, +17)

Ryan Shea, the Blackhawks 2015 4th round pick, is having a solid junior season with the Northeastern Huskies. Following his sophomore year where he racked up 17 points playing with top forwards Dylan Sikura, Adam Gaudette, and Nolan Stevens, it was unsure whether Shea would have the same offensive output with those players signing pro but Shea has remained consistent. With three goals and nine assists in 31 games this season, Shea is on pace to to as good as he was last year, including having a plus/minus over +15.

Reporting on the Blackhawks prospects last year, I spoke with a Huskies blog often about Dylan Sikura who was the talk of the NCAA at the time. The writer for that blog would always ask me to keep my eye on Ryan Shea, especially at Blackhawks prospect camp. Although I believe Shea will return for his senior season, he could have a chance to contribute one day for the Blackhawks who have few “defensive-defenseman” in their system.

Beau Starrett (Cornell: 29 GP, 6 G, 5 A)

Beau Starrett is a player that the Blackhawks really could use, but he’s yet to light it up in college. Playing in his 4th year at Cornell, Starrett has never scored more than 14 points in a season despite looking relatively good in prospect camps. He has a large frame and can skate pretty well for a big man, but there isn’t one thing he does particularly well.

A comparison may be someone like Graham Knott, although Knott was thought to have a much higher ceiling. The Blackhawks may give Starrett a shot at a pro deal since he was a third round pick, but it’s difficult to tell how effective he could be right away.

Liam Coughlin (Vermont: 29 GP, 6 G, 11 A)

Liam Coughlin could be a wildcard for the Blackhawks. The 2014 5th round pick has shown glimpses of serious talent, but he’s a streaky scorer. There is a lot of compete to Coughlin although it doesn’t show in his numbers. Many forwards have issues adjusting to pro hockey since many junior or college guys play top six situations for their teams, then have to step into 3rd or 4th line roles in the pros.

I think this may be an advantage for Coughlin, taking some pressure off and letting him have some fun grinding. Coughlin can skate and also isn’t small at 6’3 200 lbs. I’d roll the dice on him to add some depth at the forward position.

Jack Ramsey (Minnesota: 35 GP, 3 G, 1 A)

Jack Ramsey is a senior at Minnesota and could give the Blackhawks something to think about at the end of this season. He won’t wow you with his points, but this is a heart-and-soul type player. Ramsey brings leadership, effort, and grit to the table, something the Hawks will never have enough of. Ramsey reminds me a lot of Andrew Desjardins. He won’t go nuts on the score-sheet, but he’s a smart hockey player that puts you in good position to score.

There aren’t enough chip and chase players in the Hawks system who are willing to win pucks in corners and battle below the goal line. Ramsey can be a nice add especially in Colliton’s system.

Chad Krys (Boston: 25 GP, 7 G, 9 A, -8)

The Blackhawks 2016 2nd round pick Chad Krys has had a down year for his standards in his junior season at Boston University. He’s missed some time due to injury and hasn’t returned to his pace from last season where he scored 27 points in 36 games. Krys does a great job leading the breakout for BU and has the offensive ability to take over a game. He can be lethal on the powerplay and often finds scoring lanes from the left point. Although it will be a gamble for him, I think Krys returns to BU for his senior season.

There is no rush for him to get to the pros and he will get more opportunities next season to get his stock back up. People often talk about Adam Boqvist, Ian Mitchell, and Nicolas Beaudin, but Krys should be in that same conversation. His skill set rivals his fellow prospects and maybe one more season to mature his game could be what’s needed.

Juniors On Their Way Up?

It could end up being a packed house for the IceHogs if any of the NCAA prospects make the jump, but in the Junior ranks, the Blackhawks organization has a number of players who are at the age where a jump to the Pro game is the next step. For a look at those players in the North American Junior ranks, I’ll turn it over to The-Rink Juniors Feature Writer, Ron Luce.

Brandon Hagel (Red Deer, WHL: 61 GP, 38 G, 54 A)

Brandon Hagel was signed in October by the Blackhawks. He was originally a draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres in 2016.

Hagel brings a big frame (6’1”) and scoring touch to the IceHogs assuming he joins the club for a playoff push. The big winger can certainly bring some scoring touch to the offense-lacking IceHogs. As of March 7th, Hagel is tied for fifth in WHL scoring, with 92 points (38 G, 54 A) in only 61 games.

Assuming Hagel can carryover some of his offensive success in the WHL to the AHL, Hagel could be a welcomed addition. With Matthew Highmore being injured nearly the whole season, the IceHogs have lacked a game breaker at forward. Hagel certainly has provided hope as being that type of player.

Hagel has been very successful on a Red Deer team that will likely miss the playoffs. He would arguably be the biggest addition to the IceHogs as they look to have another playoff run similar to last season.

Mikael Hakkarainen (Muskegon, USHL: 35 GP, 17 G, 28 A)

Mikael Hakkarainen has had quite a unique season for the Muskegon Lumberjacks. It began with Hakkarainen leaving Providence College where he was set to play at the NCAA level, to return to the USHL club he played for last season. In his return, Hakkarainen has been nothing short of spectacular, as he sits fourth on the Lumberjacks in scoring, despite playing almost 15 fewer games than his teammates.

Haakarainen, despite missing as much time as he did, is also still in the top-20 in USHL league scoring with 45 points (17 G, 28 A). The 6’0” 193lb center can add great skill for the IceHogs down the stretch. Since Haakarainen left Providence, he is able to go to the pros, which is the logical next step in his development if the Blackhawks are committed to him long-term. It makes a lot of sense for Haakarainen to join the IceHogs and gauge where he is in his development playing against men. The young Finn has made easy work of the teenage USHL competition he’s faced.

Haakarainen would provide play-making ability to the IceHogs. He has good size and can make plays in tight areas. He has been in numerous USHL highlight videos this year with his perfect passes and big goals for the Lumberjacks. Like Hagel, Hakkarainen is likely to join the IceHogs given his history and ability to play pro.

Josiah Slavin (Chicago, USHL: 45 GP, 17 G, 20 A)

Younger brother of Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin, Josiah Slavin has had a very strong season in the USHL. The Colorado College commit started the season with the Lincoln Stars, tallying 27 points in 32 games (10 G, 17 A). As the Stars began selling players off, the Chicago Steel acquired the Blackhawks prospect and he has 10 points in 13 games since being acquired by Chicago (3 G, 7 A).

With Slavin’s impending commitment to Colorado College and the NCAA, it’s uncertain if he will join the IceHogs. If he is allowed to join the IceHogs on an amateur tryout contract (ATO), he could possibly provide some nice depth for the IceHogs. He isn’t as prolific a scorer as Hagel or Hakkarainen, but he still brings a lot of skill to his team. Slavin’s size is comparable to that of Hakkarainen, so he has solid size to compete at the AHL level.

However, I believe it is safe to assume that Slavin will not join the IceHogs and prepare for his fall season at Colorado College, where Aaron Goldschmidt will happily cover the Colorado native.

Philipp Kurashev (Quebec, QMJHL: 55 GP, 27 G, 34 A)

Philipp Kurashev really jumped onto the prospect scene when he had an incredible World Juniors tournament for Team Switzerland. The 20-year old center has been sensational this season, pacing the Remparts in team scoring. Early in the season, Kurashev was a top scorer in the QMJHL. However, Kurashev has fallen off a bit of late, but nonetheless is still having a great year.

Kurashev paces the Remparts in scoring with 61 points in 55 games (27 G, 34 A). The next closest scorer on the team has played eight more games and has 15 fewer points than Kurashev. It’s no surprise the team hasn’t had as good of a season as they may have hoped, since Kurashev is the only player with more than 20 goals on the roster.

The Remparts could always make a run in the QMJHL tournament and prevent Kurashev from joining the IceHogs. Given his age, Kurashev will likely play with Rockford next season, so it would be intriguing to see what he can do in the AHL. He hasn’t dominated the juniors like Hagel has, so it’s uncertain if the over-ager will produce at the pro level. If the young Swiss forward performs like he did in the World Juniors tournament, he could become a nice top-9 forward in the NHL down the road.

Two players that are not described above are Jake Ryczek and Reese Johnson. Ryczek is a former seventh round pick, and has been in the QMJHL since being drafted. He is currently playing on the third defensive pairing for the Halifax Mooseheads. One would hope a player like him, if going to make an impact, would make more of an impact for his junior team when he is 21 years old.

Reese Johnson is certainly a candidate to join the IceHogs late in the year with WHL teammate Brandon Hagel. Since Johnson is a new signing, we did not include a report on his prospects of joining the IceHogs, although it is likely given his age and situation. Johnson is the Captain in Red Deer and has second in scoring with 45 points in 62 games this season.

What’s Next?

The Rockford IceHogs are back in action on Saturday and Sunday as they take on the Manitoba Moose in a weekend double-header in Manitoba. After a week off, the IceHogs take on the Moose in back-to-back weekend games in Manitoba on March 9 and 10. Saturday’s puck drop is set for 6pm CT, while Sunday’s puck drop is set for 2pm CT at Bell MTS Place. Rockford holds a 1-0-1 record against the Moose this season.

Surprise name of the week is Jake Ryczek. The Halifax Mooseheads defenseman registered six points over a three game stretch, after recording only two points in all of the month of November. Notable showings also came from Brandon Hagel, Adam Boqvist and Nicolas Beaudin.

JAKE RYCZEK – HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS – 2 GOALS, 4 ASSISTS

After the former 7th round pick’s average start for the Mooseheads, he became a stratch during the early games of December for Halifax. Most Blackhawks fans probably do not even know who Ryczek is, but he had the best three game stretch of his season over the weekend.

Ryczek began his strong weekend off against the Saint John Sea Dogs with one goal and one assist in a 10-2 win for Halifax. The next day against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, Ryczek registered one goal and two assists in a 6-0 win for the Mooseheads. The three point outing was by far the best game for Ryczek to this point during the campaign. To finish the weekend, Ryczek recorded one assist for his sixth point in a 2-1 win over the Charlottetown Islanders to complete the weekend sweep for the Mooseheads.

Ryczek was an important part of the Mooseheads’ success over the weekend. Three straight wins in three days helped bring Halifax within one point of the Maritimes division lead. If Ryczek continues to play this way, he could propel himself into a contract with the Blackhawks next season and some time down with the Rockford IceHogs. This won’t be an easy task for the 2016 7th round pick, as Rockford has a very crowded blue line. Not to mention the numerous talented defensemen on the way in Adam Boqvist, Ian Mitchell and Nicolas Beaudin. Keep an eye on Ryczek to see if he continues his hot streak going into this week’s games. 

BRANDON HAGEL – RED DEER REBELS – 3 GOALS, 2 ASSISTS

After an outstanding prior week for Hagel, the young winger registered another five points in only two games over the weekend. In the Rebels’ 4-3 shootout win over the Regina Pats, Hagel scored one goal. The goal opened the games scoring late in the first period.

The next night, Hagel had an outstanding night in the Rebels’ 6-2 victory over the Swift Current Broncos. He scored two goals and added two assists. The outing was Hagel’s third four-point outing of the season. The newest Blackhawks prospect now has 51 points in 29 games after Saturday’s action.

Hagel is carving himself a nice opportunity in the AHL next season with the Rockford IceHogs. If he can produce at the AHL level, he may get an audition at some point next year with the big club. It remains to be seen how well Hagel adapts to playing against men instead of boys (considering he is an over-ager in the WHL), he provides an exciting possibility for “what could be” in the future with the Blackhawks organization.

NICOLAS BEAUDIN – DRUMMONDVILLE VOLTIGEURS – 2 GOALS, 3 ASSISTS

In the three game stretch during the week, Beaudin continued his offensive dominance by registering two goals and three assists in three games. On December 5th and 7th against the Rimouski Océanic and Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, respectively, Beaudin registered an assist in each game of the two game split for Drummondville. Despite the quiet two games, he stepped it up against Shawinigan on Sunday, December 9th.

In the commanding 11-1 win for the Voltigeurs, Beaudin scored two goals while also adding an assist. The young defenseman started the Voltigeurs’ scoring against the Shawinigan Cataractes. After being down 1-0 going into the second period, Beaudin scored to begin the second period, igniting a streak of eleven unanswered goals for the Voltigeurs to capture the victory.

Beaudin is continuing to prove he is an excellent talent on the blue line. He has no fear shooting the puck, as he registered seven shots on goal against Shawinigan. The 2018 first round pick is showing flashes of greatness, giving Blackhawks fans hope that the draft pick that was received for Chicago-native Ryan Hartman was put to good use. Beaudin looks to continue his better than point-per-game pace this week.

ADAM BOQVIST – LONDON KNIGHTS – 2 GOALS, 1 ASSIST

In two games over the past weekend, Boqvist continued his red-hot scoring streak, potting two goals and adding an assist. He has been fantastic in the last few weeks with London.

On Friday, December 7th, Boqvist scored his eight goal of the season in a big 8-1 Knights’ win over the Kingston Frontenacs. The next day, Boqvist would add his ninth goal of the campaign, which was the lone tally for London in a 5-1 loss to the Owen Sound Attack. The loss to the Sound ended a 15-game win streak for the Knights. 

Boqvist has been splendid over the last few weeks. Since November 22nd, the Knights defenseman has seven of his nine goals this season. It is safe to say that the young Swede is more comfortable on the North American ice sheet through nearly 25 games. Look for Boqvist to continue to be comfortable and produce at his better than point-per-game clip for the Knights. The Knights currently sit fourth in the CHL power rankings. With notable names Alex Formenton, Evan Bouchard and Boqvist, the Knights will likely make a strong run for the OHL title as well as the Memorial Cup.

Notably, Philipp Kurashev continues to dominate the QMJHL and recently signed Brandon Hagel continues to dominate the WHL. Defenseman Adam Boqvist has hit his stride in London and fellow OHL player Mackenzie Entwistle has shown promise for the Hamilton Bulldogs.

BRANDON HAGEL – RED DEER REBELS – 3 GOALS, 4 ASSISTS

Brandon Hagel and the Red Deer Rebels played five games during this past week’s action. In each game, Hagel registered at least one point. Hagel collected one assist in losses to the WHL leading Prince Albert Raiders, the Medicine Hat Tigers and the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

In Red Deer’s 6-2 victory on November 30th over the Calgary Hitmen, Hagel has his best performance of the week. He registered two goals and added an assist. Hagel was the only Rebels player to record three points in the win. He also collected his third goal of the week in a 3-2 loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors on December 1st. The goal helped ignite the Toque Toss in Red Deer, benefiting the Red Deer Christmas Bureau Society.

Hagel has been incredibly hot of late, registering 16 points (5 goals, 11 assists) in ten games in the month of November. Despite being an over-age junior player, Hagel’s performances should give Blackhawks something to look forward to in Rockford next season where he will gain extra seasoning.

Hagel and the Rebels (sounds like a great band name) will return to action on Friday, December 7th against the Regina Pats and Saturday, December 8th against the Swift Current Broncos. This weekend’s action will begin a six-game home-stand for the Rebels.

PHILIPP KURASHEV – QUÉBEC REMPARTS – 2 GOALS, 2 ASSISTS

The former 2018 fourth round draft pick continued his impressive QMJHL season adding four points in three games over the past week for Québec. He collected an assist in the first game for the Remparts, which aided in the 3-2 victory over the Victoriaville Tigres on November 28th.

Kurashev had his best game of the trip in a 3-2 overtime victory against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens. The young center registered one goal and one assist, helping the Remparts to their second consecutive victory. In the Remparts’ final game of the week, Kurashev registered his second goal in the Remparts’ 5-3 win over the Baie-Comeau Drakkar on Saturday, December 1st.

After this week’s action, Kurashev remains 7th in league scoring. He is tied with Jakob Pelletier for sixth in points, but has more games played than Pelletier (30 for Kurashev vs. 28 for Pelletier). Nonetheless, Kurashev has shined for the Remparts all season. He has been solid in the faceoff dot, with a 53.8% win percentage.

Remparts coach Patrick Roy relies heavily on Kurashev, starting his top line in almost every contest. At only 19-years-old, Kurashev  has time to continue his junior development. If he continues on this path, the Chicago Blackhawks may have found a hidden mid-round gem.

After sweeping this past week’s games, the Remparts return to action on Wednesday, December 5th against the Saint John Sea Dogs in Saint John. The Remparts travel to Charlottetown to take on the Islanders on Thursday, December 6th and then to Cape Breton to face the Screaming Eagles on Saturday, December 8th. After these three road games, the Remparts will return to Québec for four straight home games.

ADAM BOQVIST – LONDON KNIGHTS – 1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST

Boqvist continued his red-hot tear over the weekend with one goal and one assist in the only game he played. He was held out of London’s 8-1 win on Saturday the 1st for what is reported to be illness. London’s 6-3 victory over the Sarnia Sting was kicked off by Boqvist’s 7th goal of the season. Like Hagel before him, Boqvist’s goal ignited the Teddy Bear Toss for the London Knights on Sunday, December 2nd.

The goal was not only a great play from Boqvist, but gives the impression that the young defenseman is becoming much more comfortable on the North American ice sheet. Boqvist read the play and slid to the open space in the slot. Showing off his speed, Boqvist found the pass from his teammate and took the puck to the net, finishing the play with a nice fake-forehand, backhand combination. Fans keeping up with Adam Boqvist’s play in London this season may have seen that move once or twice before. Boqvist added his second point of the game as a secondary assist on Josh Nelson’s goal.

The London Knights return to action on Friday, December 7th against the Kingston Frontenacs in London. The Knights follow that game up on the road on Saturday, December 8th against the Owen Sound Attack. The Knights look to maintain their position atop the OHL Western Conference and second place in the league overall. Only the Ottawa 67’s have more points than the Knights to this point.

MACKENZIE ENTWISTLE – HAMILTON BULLDOGS – 2 GOALS, 1 ASSIST

Blackhawks prospect MacKenzie Entwistle continues to have a solid campaign for the Hamilton Bulldogs. This week’s action gave way to Entwistle adding two goals and an assist, bringing his point total to 24 through 26 games. His 13 goals have already matched a career high in the OHL.

After being held off the score sheet in the Bulldogs’ 5-2 win against the Mississauga Steelheads on Friday, November 30th, Entwistle rebounded quite nicely on Saturday against the Windsor Spitfires. Entwistle potted two goals in the 3-2 Bulldogs’ victory, and was also tied for the team lead in shots on goal with four for the game. As the Bulldogs looked for a sweep off their weekend action, the Niagara IceDogs ended the Bulldogs’ win-streak with a 5-1 beating. The silver lining came in form of an Entwistle assist, to bring his weekend to a point-per-game pace.

Entwistle has proven to be a solid contributor for the Bulldogs so far this season. Despite not being a point-per-game player as many expect top prospects to be in junior, Entwistle brings other intangibles to the team.  He is able to play center, winning just under 50% of his draws, while still playing his natural wing position. He also has no fear of going to the net (as shown by the highlight above) giving himself opportunities to leverage his size against smaller players. Entwistle is also the Bulldogs’ captain, showing his leadership qualities that he brings on and off the ice.

The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday, December 6th against the Peterborough Petes in Peterborough. Hamilton follows that up with back-to-back home games on Saturday, December 8th and Sunday, December 9th. The Bulldogs will welcome the Flint Firebirds and the North Bay Battalion in those games, respectively.

WORLD JUNIORS

On Monday, December 3rd, the Canadian World Juniors camp roster was announced. Blackhawks’ CHL prospects Nicolas Beaudin and MacKenzie Entwistle both made the roster with fellow Blackhawks prospect Ian Mitchell. Keep an eye on these three as they push to make Team Canada for the fast approaching World Juniors, while other prospects like Kurashev, Evan Barratt, Jake Wise, Niklas Nordgren, Adam Boqvist, and Jakub Galvas could all potentially make their country’s respective rosters.

Notable performances came from defensemen Adam Boqvist and Nicolas Beaudin, fellow 2018 first round draft picks, and forwards Philipp Kurashev and MacKenzie Entwistle.

ADAM BOQVIST – LONDON KNIGHTS – 4 GOALS, 1 ASSIST

After recording three points in pre-Thanksgiving action, the Sweden-native came out strong in London’s three games over the American holiday weekend. Although Boqvist was held scoreless in the third game of the weekend (a London Knights win), Boqvist recorded five points in the first two games.

On Thursday, November 22nd, Boqvist was a star for the Knights in their victory over the Mississauga Steelheads. The young defenseman scored two goals and added an assist in the 7-4 London win. The goals represented Boqvist’s third and fourth tallies of the season and the assist helped his point total climb to 17 points in 17 games.

On Friday, November 23rd, Boqvist once again had a multi-goal outing for the London Knights. Boqvist’s goal total climbed to six for the campaign, and another seven goal outing for the Knights powered them to their second win in as many days, this time a 7-2 victory over the Owen Sound Attack. After being held scoreless during Sunday’s action, Boqvist now has 19 points in as many games.

The Knights return to action on Friday, November 30th against the Erie Otters at home for one last game in the month of November. The Knights will remain at home, and after a day off, take on the Sarnia Sting on Sunday, December 2nd.

NICOLAS BEAUDIN – DRUMMONDVILLE VOLTIGEURS – 1 GOAL, 5 ASSISTS

Beaudin registered at least one point in each of the three contests for Drummondville over the holiday weekend. On Friday, November 23rd, Beaudin registered one assist in a dominant 7-2 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs in Saint John.

On Saturday, November 24th, Beaudin once again made his presence felt. Drummondville won 7-1 over the Moncton Wildcats, in Moncton, and Beaudin registered one goal and two assists. To continue his torrid pace, Beaudin also registered two assists in Drummondville’s Sunday win over the Halifax Mooseheads.  

Beaudin has been sensational since returning from a wrist injury early in the season. In 16 games, Beaudin has 3 goals and 15 assists, giving him a better than point-per-game pace. Since returning from injury, the Blackhawks’ first round pick has registered 9 points (2 goals, 7 assists) in seven games.

The Voltigeurs return to action on Friday, November 30th against Gatineau at home. The Voltigeurs will have a day off in Drummondville before taking on the Charlottetown Islanders, also at home, on Sunday, December 2nd.

PHILIPP KURASHEV – QUÉBEC REMPARTS – 4 GOALS, 1 ASSIST

Kurashev continued his marvelous campaign for the Remparts over the last week. Québec began their playing week on the 20th against the Moncton Wildcats. In the 6-3 loss for the Remparts, Kurashev registered his then 10th goal of the season.

On Friday, November 23rd against Val-d’Or, Kurashev recorded his second multi-goal game of the season for the Remparts. Despite the great individual effort, the Remparts dropped the contest to the Foreurs, 3-2 in overtime.   

After a day of rest, the Remparts returned to action on the 25th against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in Québec. Kurashev once again made his presence known, recording one goal and one assist in yet another losing effort. The Remparts lost in a shootout 4-3.

Kurashev has been spectacular for the Remparts this season. He now ranks tied for sixth in the QMJHL in scoring with 37 points (14 goals, 23 assists) in only 27 games. He is currently ten points off the league lead.

Kurashev and the Remparts return to action on Wednesday, November 28th against the Victoriaville Tigres. The Remparts will play one last game in November on Friday the 30th against Chicoutimi, before beginning December action on Saturday, the 1st, against Baie-Comeau.  

MACKENZIE ENTWISTLE – 3 GOALS, 1 ASSIST

Entwistle came into the weekend’s action with 17 points in 20 games for the Hamilton Bulldogs. The Bulldogs captain had a strong weekend, posting three goals and one assist for the Bulldogs in three games over the weekend, all despite being held scoreless in Hamilton’s first game on Friday, November 23rd.

On Saturday, November 24th, Entwistle scored two goals for the Bulldogs, his fourth multi-goal game of the season. Entwistle’s two goals helped lift the Bulldogs to a 5-2 win over the Niagara IceDogs. The goals were Entwistle’s 9th and 10th for the season. One of Entwistle’s goals on Saturday was a beauty! After shaking off a defender, Entwistle skated in on a breakaway to score.

On Sunday, November 25th, Entwistle followed up his two goal performance with one goal and one assist in a losing effort to the Peterborough Petes. Entwistle collected his 11th goal and 10th assist giving him 21 total points, which puts him tied for fourth on the Bulldogs this season in scoring. 

The Hamilton Bulldogs return to action on Friday, November 30th, in Mississauga, to take on the Steelheads. The Bulldogs also play on Saturday, December 1st and Sunday, December 2nd. Both games are at home against the Windsor Spitfires and Niagara IceDogs, respectively.

Notable prospects Mikael Hakkarainen, Alexis Gravel and Jake Ryczek were not in action over the aforementioned stretch. However, for those Blackhawks prospects who were in action, many of them had fantastic outings for their respective clubs.

Performances worth mentioning come courtesy of Brandon Hagel, Adam Boqvist, Philipp Kurashev and Josiah Slavin. They all registered at least three points over their past few games.

BRANDON HAGEL – RED DEER REBELS – 1 GOAL, 6 ASSISTS

After signing an NHL deal with the Blackhawks a few weeks ago, Hagel had been consistent for Red Deer, registering at least a point in almost every game since inking his contract. However, over the last two games, Hagel was incredibly dominant.

On Friday, November 16th against the Kelowna Rockets, Hagel registered one goal and two assists for the Rebels, as they routed the Rockets 7-0 at home. The points were #31, #32 and #33 on the campaign for Hagel.

Not to outdo himself, but the following day against the Kootenay Ice, Hagel registered four assists in yet another Rebels victory! The Rebels took the game in overtime, with Hagel registering the primary assist on the overtime game-winner, which set up teammate Reese Johnson for the hat trick.

After two incredible performances for the 20-year-old, Hagel has now recorded 37 points in only 20 games in the WHL. Despite being an overager, Hagel’s performances have been incredible thus far. The Rebels return to action on Friday, November 23rd at Kootenay before returning home on Saturday, November 24th to take on Medicine Hat. The Rebels will also play back-to-back games on the 27th and 28th against Prince Albert and Medicine Hat, respectively.

ADAM BOQVIST – LONDON KNIGHTS – 1 GOAL, 2 ASSISTS

Boqvist looks like he has picked up his solid pace that he began the season with before missing time with injury. The London Knights played three games in three days, with Boqvist recording points in two of those three games.

On Friday, November 16th, Boqvist had two secondary assists in a Knights’ victory over the Peterborough Petes. The two points gave Boqvist 13 points through only 15 games played for London this year.

After being left off the scoresheet in a 2-1 shootout victory for the Knights on Saturday, Boqvist scored his second goal of the season in a 6-3 win over the Erie Otters on Sunday, giving the Knights three wins in three days over the weekend. The goal gave Boqvist his 14th point in only his 16th game this season.

Boqvist and the Knights return to action on November 22nd, American Thanksgiving, against the Mississauga Steelheads in London. London plays the Owen Sound Attack the following day and on Sunday, November 25th they take on the Windsor Spitfires in Windsor.

PHILIPP KURASHEV – QUÉBEC REMPARTS – 1 GOAL, 3 ASSISTS

Kurashev had yet another incredible weekend for Québec. Although held off the scoresheet for the second game of the weekend, Kurashev had a huge impact on the first game.

The Remparts hosted the Shawinigan Cataractes on Friday, November 16th. In the 6-4 Remparts win, Kurashev recorded one goal and three assists. Kurashev’s four points increased his points total to 33 on the season.  

On Sunday, November 18th, the Remparts were defeated by the Rimouski Océanic, 5-1. Kurashev was held off the scoresheet, giving Kurashev 33 points through 24 QMJHL games to date.

Kurashev and the Remparts return to action on Tuesday, November 20th against Moncton. The Remparts will have a few days off before facing Val-d’Or on Friday the 23rd and Blainville-Boisbriand on Sunday the 25th. All three games are in Québec.

JOSIAH SLAVIN – LINCOLN STARS – 2 GOALS, 1 ASSIST

After a solid three point stretch last weekend, Josiah Slavin and the Stars returned to action for two games this past weekend. On Saturday, November 17th, Slavin recorded his second three point outing of the season, scoring two goals and adding an assist. Despite the great effort from Slavin, the Stars fell to the Sioux Falls Stampede 4-3 in overtime.

Slavin was held scoreless in the second game of the weekend on the 18th against the Waterloo Black Hawks. The Stars dropped their second game in a row 6-3.

Slavin and the Stars will have an opportunity to turn things around on Wednesday, November 21st against the Tri-City Storm. The Stars also have games on Friday, November 23rd and Saturday, November 24th against the Des Moines Buccaneers in Des Moines and against Tri-City again at home.

Beaudin had an excellent return in two games this past weekend. Philipp Kurashev continues to pace the Quebec Remparts in scoring after three very good games. Mikael Hakkarainen and Josiah Slavin in the USHL also had strong showings this past weekend.

Kurashev and Hakkarainen are both showing they can dominate junior level talent. The two 2018 draft picks should be moving up to pro hockey next season to further their development. So far, these two look like the could be steals for their draft position. Beaudin also has showed well and could be a great value for Chicago in the near future.

NICOLAS BEAUDIN – DRUMMONDVILLE VOLTIGEURS – 1 GOAL, 2 ASSISTS

After returning to game action for the first time since October 19th, Nicolas Beaudin had a great weekend both on and off the ice. Off the ice, Beaudin signed his first professional contract with the Blackhawks. He joins fellow 2018 1st round pick Adam Boqvist as the first two 2018 Chicago draft picks under contract. On the ice, Beaudin showed why Chicago selected him in the late part of the first round this past draft.

On November 9th against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, Beaudin registered one goal and one assist, helping the Voltigeurs to a commanding 8-1 victory. Beaudin was the highest scoring defenseman for Drummondville during the contest.

The following day, Beaudin picked up an assist against the Victoriaville Tigres. Despite adding to his excellent weekend on the scoresheet, Drummondville dropped the game 5-1 in Victoriaville.

Beaudin and the Voltigeurs return to action on Friday, November 16th in Gatineau, followed by Sherbrooke on Sunday, November 18th. The two games mark the second and third straight away games for Drummondville, who will play another three road games before returning home on November 30th.

PHILIPP KURASHEV – QUÉBEC REMPARTS – 3 GOALS, 3 ASSISTS

Kurashev had an incredible weekend for Québec. After being held off the score-sheet on November 6th, Kurashev made up for it in the following two games.

Québec’s first game of the trip against val-d’Or did not fair well for the Remparts, as they dropped the contest 8-4. However, Kurashev had a goal and two assists, which was a commanding performance for the 2018 4th round pick.  

The following game resulted in a huge win for Québec, taking down the Shawinigan Cataractes 7-2 in Shawinigan. Kurashev had another three point performance, this time, recording two goals and one assist. This game capped off two excellent games for Kurashev where he recorded six points (three goals, three assists).  

Kurashev and the Remparts return to action on Friday, November 16th against Shawinigan in Québec. They will remain at home as the Rimouski Océanic pay a visit on Sunday, November 18th.

MIKAEL HAKKARAINEN – MUSKEGON LUMBERJACKS – 3 GOALS, 2 ASSISTS

Hakkarainen continued his now four game point streak over the weekend for Muskegon in back to back home games against Youngstown.

On November 9th, Hakkarainen recorded his first hat trick of the season, helping the Lumberjacks to a big 8-2 win over the Phantoms. Hakkarainen would also add on an assist to cap off the impressive four point performance.

Hakkarainen would tack on an assist the following day as Muskegon split the weekend series with Youngstown. The Phantoms won game two 4-3. Hakkarainen now has 17 points in only nine game for Muskegon. Muskegon sits six points ahead of the next closest team in the USHL eastern conference standings with two games in hand.

Muskegon returns to action on Saturday, November 17th against Cedar Rapids. With only one game next weekend, the Lumberjacks will play three games over the extended Thanksgiving holiday (21st – 24th) against Team USA and two games against Green Bay.

JOSIAH SLAVIN – LINCOLN STARS – 1 GOAL, 2 ASSISTS

Despite going pointless in Lincoln’s first two games of the weekend, Slavin made his presence felt on Sunday, November 11th as he collected two assists against Tri-City. Slavin has now increased his point total to 14 for the season in 14 games.

Lincoln will play two games next weekend. Friday, November 16th they take on Sioux Falls in Lincoln. On Saturday, November 17th, the Stars take on the Waterloo Black Hawks in Waterloo. Lincoln will play a similar schedule to that of Muskegon during the Thanksgiving holiday.
