The Chicago Blackhawks (19-21-7) fell to the visiting Calgary Flames (20-23-4) 3-1 at the United Center on Thursday night. Mikael Backlund scored shorthanded and added an assist to lead the visitors. The Blackhawks’ power play went 0 for 4 and gave up the shorthanded goal and the Blackhawks could not take advantage of their early 1-0 lead.

Chicago took the lead at the 2:38 mark of the game when captain Nick Foligno fired a wrist shot past Calgary goaltender Devin Cooley. The goal, assisted by forwards Colton Dach and Landon Slaggart, was Foligno’s second of the season.

Calgary would tie the game at 1-1 when forward Yegor Sharangovich scored his ninth goal of the season, beating Chicago goaltender Spencer Knight on the power play. Backland and Connor Zary assisted on the goal.

Backlund would finish off the scoring for Calgary in the first period with the shorthanded goal at the 6:05 mark of the first period. The go-ahead 2-1 goal was unassisted.

Calgary would finish the scoring for the night after former Chicago Steel forward Matt Coronato scored his 13th goal of the season into the Chicago empty net. The goal, assisted by Sharangovich, capped off the two-point nights for Backlund and Sharnagovich.

Analysis

Chicago could not muster much pressure on the power play and finished the game 0 for 4 with the man advantage. The Blackhawks’ power play is running at a 22% clip this season, which ranks 12th in the NHL leaderboards, so panic would not be the word for a one-game slip up.

Knight continues to play well even in defeat. The 24-year-old has the task of playing behind a inexperienced blue line and has shown to keep them in games even when the struggle is there in front of him.

First period

Ryan Donato started the scoring for Chicago after a shot from Louis Crevier. Donato was able to corral the rebound and fire a shot past Wolf for the goal.

The first period ended with Hawks up 1-0.

Second period

In the second period, Bedard got going on offense. Sam Rinzel flipped a puck deep into the Flames’ zone. Bedard outskated the defenseman and poked the puke through Wolf’s five hole for the goal.

Late in the second period, the Flames answered with a goal from Matt Coronato. Coronato got his first goal against the Hawks after being denied 11 times in their first matchup.

Third period

Rasmus Andersson tied the game at 2-2 with an early goal. With the Hawks reeling, Bedard recaptured the lead with a nasty shot from the right circle. Bedard was setup by a slick cross-ice pass from Ryan Greene.

Oliver Moore added his second goal of the season. Moore blazed his way past the Flames and had the puck go off his leg for the goal.

With the Flames desperate to make a comeback, they pulled Wolf late in the game. Bedard was able to hoist a shot from his own end for the empty-net goal. The empty-netter cemented the victory and gave Bedard his second hat trick.

Analysis

Bedard and the Blackhawks are buzzing right now. In the last 10 games, Bedard has 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points with two hat tricks. He had zero hat tricks in the NHL before this season. In addition to all the points, the Hawks are winning games. They are 6-2-2 in their last 10.

Rinzel had a point in his return to the ice. The young defenseman was given a mental reset after some struggles. The reset seemed to work as he was better in his own end in this one.

In addition to Rinzel recording a point, Greene and Moore contributed points. Greene is such a solid player who can play the wing with Bedard or center the third line. Greene has a goal and assist in his last two games. Moore affected the game with his speed. He blasted by the defense for his goal. He also chipped in an assist on the Donato goal.

After the game, there was scrum that involved Rinzel and Colton Dach. Dach had taken expection to a hit Adam Klapka delivered to Connor Murphy earlier in the game. Klapka also hit Rinzel with time expiring that caused the scrum. Mutiple Hawks and Flames recieved game misconducts. Chicago has not taken kindly to other teams taking shots at their guys and have defended themselves all year.

The Hawks’ next games is Thursday against the Seattle Kraken. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. CST.

Coming off a big road victory against the Vancouver Canucks, the Chicago Blackhawks looked to win back-to-back games for first time this month. Their opponent was the struggling Calgary Flames.

The Hawks stayed with the 11 forwards and seven defenseman configuration for this game.

First period

In the midst of a frustrating season, the Flames came out physical. Rasmus Andersson was called for high-sticking on Frank Nazar. Nazar was injuried and left the game.

On the ensuing power play, Tyler Bertuzzi’s torrid streak continued with another goal. After netting a hat trick in the third period against Vancouver, he deflected in the first goal of the game.

Connor Bedard fed a beautful pass to Bertuzzi. With the assist, Bedard extended his point streak to seven games. After the Bertuzzi goal, Colton Dach got into a fight with Joel Farabee. The first period ended with the Hawks up 1-0.

Second period

The physicality did not stop in the second period. Alex Vlasic got into a fight with MacKenzie Weegar for his hit on Oliver Moore. Later in the period, Nick Foligno checked Joel Hanley into the boards. He then fought Hanley. Hanely and Foligno served five-minute majors.

Third period

After a scoreless second period, the Hawks’ offense kicked into high gear. Bertuzzi scored his second goal of the game on Bedard’s second assist of the game. Bedard made a perfect pass on their odd-man rush against Calgary.

That was Bertuzzi’s fifth goal in the last two games.

Later in the period, Andre Burakovsky buried a shot for a goal. The Burakovsky goal was assisted by Bedard. That was Bedard’s third assist of the game.

The Bedard goal was the cherry on top of a great victory. The Hawks defeated the Flames 4-0.

Analysis

After a tough start to the road trip, the Hawks appear to have found their stride in the last two games. Chicago has been fueled by an explosive third-period offense and spectacular goaltending by Spencer Knight.

Knight

While Bedard and the other forwards will get the headlines, Knight has been the difference maker this season. Against Calgary, Knight made 33 saves, including 11 against Matt Coronato, to seal the win. In the last two games, Knight has 76 saves to help propel the Hawks two consecutive wins. For the season, Knight is 6-3-2 with a .926 save percentage. He also leads the league with a 10.5 goals saved above average this season per Natural Stat Trick.

With the shutout, he becomes the first Blackhawks goalie to record a shutout in two seasons. Before Knight, Petr Mrazek was the last Hawks shutout in 2023.

Bedard

With Knight providing spectacular goaltending, Bedard’s offense has also found another gear. With the four points, Bedard became the fastest Blackhawks player to 150 points, surpassing Eddie Olczyk. Bedard now has points 22 points in 15 games this season.

The big night also tied Bedard with Macklin Celebrini for the league lead in points, though it was short lived as Celebrini scored an hour later to retake the lead.

Bedard’s improved skating and puck-winning ability has helped launch his offensive game this season. He is currently on pace for 120 points.

Bertuzzi and Burakovsky

While Bedard will garner all the headlines, Bertuzzi and Burakovsky also have been white hot. Bertuzzi scored two more goals on Friday making that five in his last two games. With the Nazar injury, expect Bertuzzi to stay on the top line with Burkovsky. While Bertuzzi is scoring goals in bunches, Burakovsky is quietly going about his business. He has 12 points in 14 games and four goals in his last five games.

The excellent play of the players above in addition to the emergence of Artyom Levshunov has helped the Blackhawks win two in a row.

The Hawks also recieved some good news on Nazar, aa the injury is not as serious as the team initially feared. He will be day-to-day going forward.

Chicago has a quick turnaround as they take on the Detroit Red Wings at noon CST on Sunday.

Connor Bedard scored his 100th career NHL point as the Chicago Blackhawks (14–28–2) lost to the Calgary Flames (21–14–7) 5–2 Monday night at the United Center. Calgary was led by forward Jakob Pelletier with two goals and an assist.

Bedard (112 games) required the fewest games by a teenager to reach 100 career points since Sidney Crosby needed only 80 games in 2005–06.

After the game, fans could not help but noticed a defeated Bedard as he answered questions.

“Right now, I couldn’t care less, but, yeah, ask me in a couple days and probably look at it a little different, but just frustrated right now,” Bedard said. “Do I feel powerless? No, I’m a player on the team. We’re all in this as one, and we’ve got a lot of work to do, obviously. Our record shows that.”

Petr Mrazek (8–16–1) stopped 31 shots in the losing effort. Mrazek has now squandered at least four goals in seven of his last nine starts.

First period

Pelletier opened the scoring at the 1:14 mark with a nice snap shot that many would call a soft goal behind Mrazek. The goal, assisted by forward Rory Kerins, who was making his NHL debut, and defenseman Brayden Pachal, gave Pelletier his second goal of the season.

Chicago would bounce right back when defenseman Louis Crevier fired the equalizer behind Calgary goaltender Dustin Wolf for his second goal of the season. The goal, assisted by Lukas Reichel, came off a turnover by the Flames in their own zone that found the puck on Reichel’s stick, who found Crevier.

Pelletier scored his second goal of the period when he fired a wrist shot past Mrazek at the 11:47 mark of the period. Mikael Backland would waste no time extending the Flames’ lead to 3–1 with a tip-in at the 14:08 mark of the period. Forward Matt Coronato found a loose puck in front of Mrazek and fired a shot that tipped Backlund’s stick before finding its way into the back of the net.

Chicago was outshot 14–7 in the period and that seemed to be not as bad as the home team was playing on the ice.

Second period

Calgary extended its lead to 4–1 with defenseman Jake Bean’s second goal of the season at the 1:55 mark of the middle frame. The goal, assisted by forward Yegor Sharngovich and Pelletier, ricocheted off the boards behind Mrazek and found the stick of Bean for a wide-open net.

The Blackhawks would cut the lead to 4–2 as Bedard scored his 12th goal of the season on the power play. The goal gave the 19-year-old his 100th point of his short NHL career. As the team’s only hope to score offensively most nights, whether with a slick assist or nifty goal, Bedard continues to show he is the real deal in this league.

Sharangovich scored his seventh goal of the season shorthanded when he fired a wrist shot past Mrazek to give the Flames a 5–2 lead, the score the away team would win the affair.

Third period

Chicago could not muster much in the last period and somewhat looked disinterested in making any sort of comeback. Chicago would be outshot 10–8 as the Flames went into prevent mode and the lack of talent up and down the roster showed as the home team never really put any sort of pressure on the Flames.

Analysis

Bedard and Teuvo Teravainen continue to be the offense for this lackluster team. Fans need to watch the young phenom most nights, as he is usually the only piece that is worth the price of admission.

Reichel won all seven of his faceoffs on the night. That is impressive for anyone, let alone Reichel, who is winning just 40.6% of his draws for his career.

Anything else about Monday’s game was terrible. The “dog days” of January are amongst us and this team will be unwatchable most nights, and that is not just because they are blacked out or not on a channel fans receive.

Chicago skates into Tennessee for a 7 p.m. CST puck drop against the Nashville Predators on Thursday, seen on CHSN and FDSNSO.

The Chicago Blackhawks came into Saturday afternoon having won three straight games for the first time in two years. They were managing to put goals in the net, getting excellent goaltending and otherwise playing their best hockey of the season so far.

Seth Jones and Petr Mrazek checked back into the lineup versus the Flames, having missed time due to injury.

The Blackhawks would roll out the following lines versus the Flames:

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

First period

The first started off with a fair amount of puck movement by both sides. Nine and a half minutes in, Mrazek made a tremendous save on Jake Bean to keep things knotted up at zeroes. That unfortunately would not last for the whole period. With the Blackhawks on the power play, Jonathan Huberdeau got sprung up the left boards. He kept Frank Nazar at bay and backhanded the puck past Mrazek, making it 1–0 Flames. The home team did not let up. Forty-seven seconds later, Nazem Kadri stole a pass from Kevin Korchinski. With the Blackhawks’ defense backing up, he put a wrister on net and quickly made it 2–0 Calgary. It just kept getting worse for the Blackhawks in this frame, as Connor Murphy would take a dumb penalty on Huberdeau again and he was granted a penalty shot.

Mrazek stood tall and managed to keep that one out of the net, sending the Blackhawks to the intermission down 2–0.

Second period

This period took a little while to get going. Ten minutes in, the Blackhawks looked like they might be right back in it. Tyler Bertuzzi got a good pass up to Taylor Hall in front of the benches. He skated in and got the puck across to Connor Bedard, who one-timed the puck to the back of the net, 2–1 Flames.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

This second period was all Flames after that. Twenty-eight seconds after Bedard scored, Calgary got the goal right back. Jakob Pelletier got the puck over to Connor Zary, who had the easiest tap-in of his season, 3–1. Just under two minutes later, the Flames were on the power play due to some retaliation on the part of Ryan Donato. They made quick work of that, with Matthew Coronato tucking home another easy goal, 4–1 to the home team. Unfortunately, that goal put an end to the Hawks’ remarkable penalty-killing streak, which had climbed to over 30 consecutive kills before the Coronato tally. The worst goal to let in was the next one, though. Bean took a shot that got knocked down on the way through to the net. Blake Coleman got a stick on it to deflect it to the ice, making it 5–1 Calgary. This one looked like it was all but over.

Third period

Less than a minute into the third, it was clear that the Blackhawks got a talking to in the locker room between periods. Fifty-seven seconds in, Bedard put the puck across to Bertuzzi, who was tied up in front of the net. He fell over, freed himself and put the puck past Dustin Wolf, making it 5–2.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Bertuzzi would end up with the next one, too. On the two-man advantage, with some good puck movement, it found its way down to Bedard again. He once again fed Bertuzzi on the far side of the net, making it 5–3, and bringing the Blackhawks back within two.

At the 18:52 mark of the frame, the Blackhawks were back in it officially, but running out of time. Ilya Mikheyev continued his hot streak, potting his seventh of the year, making it really closer than it looked like it would have been, 5–4 Calgary.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Unfortunately, that was all that the Blackhawks were able to muster. Mikael Backlund put home an empty-netter for the Flames, putting this one away and giving the Flames the 6–4 victory.

Analysis

The Blackhawks won the most faceoffs of any game that I have seen them play this season, which is a great thing to see in a team, as that is often the easiest way to get things going on offense. The game as a whole was sloppy. The first and second periods were both lacking in terms on having enough effort on defense and following your man. Sixty-eight penalty minutes is quite a lot of time there too, as Martin Pospisil was taking hits on people he should not have, and forcing the Blackhawks to retaliate, forcing that total up ever higher.

Overall, it a good performance for a loss, especially seeing them fight to get back into the game in the third period.

The Blackhawks’ next game is on Monday night in Minnesota to take on the Wild. Coverage will be on CHSN at 7 p.m. CST.

After a surprising 5–2 victory in Edmonton on Saturday night, the Chicago Blackhawks headed south to Calgary to take on the 3–0–0 Calgary Flames for a Tuesday night matchup. Through three games, Calgary was averaging 5.33 goals per game, which could be quite the task for Chicago goaltender Petr Mrazek. Calgary Head Coach Ryan Huska gave Dustin Wolf the start in net for the home team.

Here is a look at Luke Richardson lineup for the game.

First period

The game started with some solid end-to-end action that resulted in some entertaining hockey for fans. Chicago did not take advantage of the only power play of the period, and a few moments later, Calgary took the early 1–0 lead when forward Matt Coronato scored his first goal of the season at the 16:01 mark. Defenseman Rasmus Andersson fired a shot on net that bounced and ended up behind the Blackhawks’ net. Mrazek, caught sliding 12 feet out of his crease, allowed Coronato to corral the puck off the end boards and stuff it home as defenseman Alex Vlasic tried his best to help out his wandering goaltender.

Only 10 seconds later, captain Nick Foligno won the draw back to Alec Martinez in the offensive zone, proving faceoffs are important, who slung the puck over to Seth Jones, who fired a shot on net that was tipped by Foligno as he went to the front of the net, exactly what should be done after winning the draw. The Foligno goal was his second of the season and tied the game 1–1, which is where we stood at the end of the period.

Second period

Chicago pulled off the impressive penalty hat trick in the third period as Philipp Kurashev, Connor Bedard and Foligno were all whistled for infractions. The Blackhawks killed off the first penalty but were unable to take advantage of the Foligno slash on Jonathan Huberdeau to make it 6-on-4 and take a 2–1 lead at the 12:32 mark of the middle frame, with Bedard still in the box. The goal, scored by Andrei Kuzmenko, was assisted by Huberdeau and Connor Zary.

After two periods of action Chicago led in shots 22–20, while the Flames led in scoring chances 25–20.

Third period

Chicago looked like a team tired from a long road trip and could not even the score on the second penalty Foligno drew this game when Brayden Pachal was called for high-sticking. After some end-to-end action that saw Calgary do a nice job of limiting Chicago, the Flames finished off the visitors when Coronato scored his second goal of the game after the Blackhawks pulled Mrazek.

Overall, Mrazek played well, stopping 23 of the 25 shots he faced in the 3–1 Calgary victory.

Analysis

Foligno was all over the ice and was rewarded with his second goal of the season. The captain won six of his 10 faceoffs and also drew two penalties. The “lead by example” forward has been playing well overall early in the season.

Chicago came into the game with a hot power play that would ultimately go cold in both their attempts. After the game, Foligno told reporters that he thought the team played well enough to win but the lost the power play battle, as the Flames scored once in their three chances with the man advantage.

Chicago finally gets the chance to skate on home ice as the San Jose Sharks come to town for a 7:30 p.m. CDT puck drop on Thursday.

The Chicago Blackhawks came into Tuesday night’s action off a thrilling comeback win against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night. They managed to come back to force overtime, scoring the winning goal 18 seconds into overtime. No lineup changes were in order, as the Blackhawks looked to keep the winning going with the same cast.

First period

The first period was controlled by the Blackhawks from the outset. They got two power play chances within the first two minutes of the game, making the Flames pay on the second. Seth Jones got the puck back at the point and pounded a slapshot on net, making it 1–0 Blackhawks early. Later on in the period, Landon Slaggert got his first NHL point. He got the puck up the side boards to Joey Anderson. Anderson skated in, faked a shot and got the puck across to Jason Dickinson, who buried his 19th goal of the season. The period would end with the Blackhawks up 2–0.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Second period

The Blackhawks got outshot by roughly the same margin that they outshot the Flames in the first. They still got the better overall scoring chances, in particular one for Slaggert. Jacob Markstrom misplayed a carom off of the boards, and Slaggert just could not reach far enough around the defenseman to tuck it home.

Landon Slaggert is going to thinking about this in his sleep tonight after missing out on his first career NHL goal. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/GqZ23TXq11

— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) March 27, 2024

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The Blackhawks took two penalties in the second, but killed off both power plays, keeping the score 2–0 after two.

Third period

The Blackhawks again were badly outshot in the third as a whole. They got another goal early on though—another from Dickinson—4:15 into the frame. Once again, Slaggert with the secondary assist, and Anderson with the primary made it 3–0 Blackhawks. Slaggert had another huge chance in this period, too. It was called a goal on the ice, but did not cross the goal line after review, going off of the bottom of the crossbar and out. The Flames would get one back on a MacKenzie Weegar wrist shot through traffic from the point. The Blackhawks were standing around defensively and did not cover well, allowing Weegar to be wide open. The Flames ended up pulling their goalie and kept peppering Petr Mrazek with shots. He stopped every other one he faced, and the Blackhawks took home the victory 3–1.

Analysis

After a dominant first, the Blackhawks looked gassed. They gave their everything in that period, but the rest of the game, there were a good amount of defensive lapses that allowed the Flames to rack up shots on goal. Slaggert played his best game so far in a Blackhawks uniform. He was buzzing around the net all night, and came as close as he could to getting his first career goal. If he keeps up this level of play, he could be a welcome addition to this team for years to come. Mrazek took over the game in the second and third, even if his defense did let him down. He has been outstanding considering the caliber of players in front of him night after night.

The Blackhawks’ next game is on Thursday night in Canada against the Ottawa Senators. That game will be at 6 p.m. CDT on NBC Sports Chicago.

The Chicago Blackhawks came into Saturday night’s action against the Calgary Flames looking to get back into the win column. They had dropped their previous decision to the streaking Edmonton Oilers, but still looked competitive in that defeat. The lines versus Calgary were unchanged from that previous game:

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

First period

Just over two and a half minutes into the game, the Blackhawks got their first huge chance. Boris Katchouk got a breakaway chance off of a bad Calgary pass. He had Jacob Markstrom down early, but could not slip the puck past the outstretched pad. Both teams traded some good chances, with Joey Anderson and Jason Dickinson getting good opportunities, but were unable to convert. The Blackhawks continued to pepper Markstrom for the rest of the period, but the score remained tied at 0–0 after 20 minutes.

Second period

The Blackhawks continued to get shots on goal to start the second. Colin Blackwell got the first good opportunity on a one-timer from Dickinson, but was not able to get enough on the puck. With just over five and a half minutes gone, Philipp Kurashev got in on Markstrom on a breakaway. Markstrom was able to make the stop on Kurashev’s backhand bid to keep the game scoreless. On the other end, Petr Mrazek continued to hold his own, making some beautiful stops of his own to make sure the game did not get away from the Blackhawks.

#Blackhawks have had so many breakaways tonight and we’re not even halfway through the game yet. pic.twitter.com/eJwvjdlOt5

— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) January 28, 2024

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

With just over four minutes remaining in the period, the Flames went to the man advantage on a trip by Blackwell. On the ensuing power play, Jarred Tinordi blocked a shot from Yegor Sharangovich in front. The puck bounced right to Elias Lindholm, who tucked the puck into the back of the net, making it 1–0 Calgary. Isaak Phillips attempted to score, going coast to coast, but was stymied by Markstrom in the last two minutes of the period.

Third period

The Blackhawks continued to send shots to the net and try to get this game tied up. The Flames did not go away either, though, and Mrazek had to make some more great stops to keep the score where it was. In a last-ditch effort to knot the game up, the Blackhawks pulled Mrazek. This led to a couple of good chances from Taylor Raddysh, as well as one huge chance for Dickinson, but they were unable to convert and the Flames won the hockey game 1–0.

Analysis

This was a tough game to watch. The Blackhawks had so many opportunities, especially on the breakaway, but nothing was falling their way. Mrazek shined in net once again, and kept them in the game throughout its entirety, giving them every opportunity to score and get back into the game. There is not much more to say than has already been said about how tough it has been to find offense for this team. The Blackhawks played great defensively, but could not figure out the opposing goaltender. This is becoming a theme for this team, as they have so many injured players at present. It seems as though they will only get offense back when some of those players return to the ice.

The Blackhawks are now off on the all-star break until Feb. 7. They will be back in action then against the Minnesota Wild. That game will be at 8:30 p.m. CST on TNT.

The Chicago Blackhawks returned home from a hellacious road trip in which the team suffered injuries to seemingly most of their forward core. Connor Bedard and Nick Foligno were the latest additions to the injured reserve list, joining Taylor Raddysh, Tyler Johnson and Anthony Beauvillier.

With all of the injuries before today’s the game, the Hawks acquired Rem Pitlick and claimed Zach Sanford off waivers from Arizona on Saturday. Sanford was able to make the game, while Pitlick was not able to arrive in Chicago before the game.

The first period ended with the scored tied at 1–1.

Second period

In the second period, the Flames jumped out to the early lead, getting a power play goal from Andrew Mangiapane to put the visitors ahead 2–1. The Hawks responded with a goal from newly minted alternate captain Philipp Kurashev. Kurashev got the puck on net with the a turnaround shot off a dish from Jason Dickinson.

Zaitsev has been on the other end of the exchange this season, so it was good to see him get rewarded for a putting puck on net.

The second period ended with the Hawks up 3–2.

Third period

In the third period, Blackwell scored again on the power play to extend the Hawks’ lead to 4–2. It was his second goal of the game and his third goal in four games.

Kadri scored again to get the Flames within striking distance, but it was not enough, as the Blackhawks held onto the 4–3 victory.

Analysis

The Blackhawks have been decimated by injuries this season, yet the team continues to play hard. The team played hard with physicality and emotion in the first first home game of the new year. Blackwell played his best game as a member of the Blackhawks today and has been playing well since returning from back surgery. The Blackhawks have to continue to play hard in hopes other teams are not ready for their effort. They are also going to need unexpected production from guys like Blackwell and Dickinson to make games competitive.

On a positive note, Raddysh, Joey Anderson and Seth Jones skated on their own after practice on Saturday, which could indicate they are close to returning. The Hawks need guys to get healthy and stay healthy for the rest of this season.

The Hawks’ next game is against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. CST.

The Chicago Blackhawks did themselves a disservice on Tuesday night by winning a hockey game. The Hawks defeated the Calgary Flames 4–3, moving ahead of the Anaheim Ducks in the Western Conference basement. Oddly enough, finishing last in the NHL this year is critical for Chicago, as it secures a top-three pick in the upcoming 2023 NHL Entry Draft and gives them the best odds in the draft lottery to secure coveted future star Connor Bedard.

Chicago received first period goals from Andreas Athanasiou and Jujhar Khaira to take a 2–1 lead into the first intermission. Athanasiou tallied another in the second period to make it 3–2. In the beginning of the third period, Austin Wagner scored his first goal as a Blackhawk on a nice toe pull and wrist shot to make it 4–2. Calgary’s Mikael Backlund cut the lead to 4–3, but Petr Mrazek shut the door, finishing the evening with 33 saves, and the Hawks skated to victory.

Chicago continues its late-season road trip on Thursday night versus the Vancouver Canucks. Puck drop is 9 p.m. CDT.

Chicago entered Thursday’s contest in Calgary minus their captain, as Jonathan Toews was scratched for a non-COVID related illness. That bad news would not stop Chicago from taking advantage of a putrid Calgary Flames’ defense in the second period on their way to a 5–1 victory.

Jaxson Stauber played an excellent game in net. Stauber backstopped Chicago with 34 saves, while looking like a calm veteran in net. The 23-year-old has two victories in as many attempts since being called up from Rockford.

Chicago found an early goal from forward Taylor Raddysh for his 13th goal of the season and 24th of his young career. The former second-round pick has shown a slight usefulness this season in the offensive zone, as his overall game has not quite lived up to NHL standards.

Fans should be allowed to split-screen the game with a small box concentrated on Flames head coach Darryl Sutter. The hockey legend would be a blast to watch coach, especially when his team is struggling. As Calgary fights for a playoff spot, Sutter will keep his team prepared each night. As a Blackhawks fan, you cannot help but see Luke Richardson doing the same thing each night, albeit with only a fraction of the talent.

Chicago scored three times in the second period to distance themselves from Calgary. Forwards Boris Katchouk, Jason Dickinson and Sam Lafferty all found the back of the net behind Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom. Chicago took advantage of a Swiss cheese defense that found the home team scrambling in their own zone, as they struggled positionally and got caught flat-footed in their own end on multiple occasions.

Chicago tried its best to let Calgary gain a little life in the third period as Luke Philp and Dickinson took careless penalties, but the visitors withstood their ground and killed off both infractions and all three in the contest.

Chicago drives north for a Saturday night puck drop against the Edmonton Oilers at 9 p.m CST.

Fresh off their ninth win of the season, the Chicago Blackhawks returned to United Center to host the Calgary Flames looking to make it two in a row. For the second straight game, the Hawks played without Patrick Kane who was still nursing an injured leg.

At 2:39 of the first period, Lukas Reichel scored his first career goal to give the Hawks a 1–0 lead. Reichel skated into the slot and made a no-look pass to Seth Jones who shot the puck from the point and Reichel tapped in the rebound.

Elias Lindholm tied the game at 1–1 on the power play with his 13th of the season as he tapped in a rebound at the 8:49 mark.

The Hawks regained the lead when Colin Blackwell scored his first in a Blackhawks sweater to give the home team a 2–1 lead. Blackwell capitalized on a rebound off a Sam Lafferty shot from the right circle at 10:10 of the first.

Just 35 seconds into the second period, Philipp Kurashev one-timed a feed from Reichel past Jacob Markstrom for his fifth of the season to give the Hawks a 3–1 lead. For Markstrom, it was his third goal given up on 11 shots in the game which led to a goalie switch by Flames coach Darryl Sutter, who brought in backup Dan Vladar.

The goaltending switch gave Calgary some life as just 27 seconds later, Jonathan Huberdeau scored from the slot for his eighth of the season which cut the Hawks’ lead to 3–2.

At the 9:40 mark of the second, Calgary tied the game on a power play goal by Nazem Kadri for his 16th of the season off a rebound right in front of Hawks netminder Alex Stalock.

After a scoreless third, the Hawks won it in overtime when Max Domi made some excellent stick moves in the slot then fed Reichel who dished it back to Domi who deked Vladar for his 12th and second OT winner of the season. For the second straight game, the Blackhawks won 4–3 in overtime.

As for Reichel, he notched his first career three-point night although his special night might have been wasted if it weren’t for the stellar night by Stalock, whose 44 saves included 38 of 39 at even strength.

The Hawks get a few days off before returning to home ice on Thursday night against defending Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche. The puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. CST.

Monday night’s matchup was the tale of two franchises trending in different directions. The Calgary Flames are making their way to the playoffs with a 6–3–1 record in their last 10 games. Their previous matchup was a 9–1 victory against the Arizona Coyotes. Meanwhile, the Chicago Blackhawks are plummeting straight toward the bottom. The Hawks were coming home after losing overtime to the Nashville Predators and currently have just one win in the month of April.

First period

In the first period, the Flames struck early and often against a porous Blackhawks defense. The Flames notched their first goal of the game less than 30 seconds in the contest. After winning an offensive zone face-off, Flames defenseman Noah Hanifin took a shot from the point that was deflected in by Dillion Dube for the game first’s goal. Dube was able to score because of his positioning on Caleb Jones.

Shortly after, Johnny Gaudreau made the Blackhawks’ defense look silly, circling the wagons around the zone before causing a glaring miscommunication between two defenders for a clear lane to the net. Gaudreau made no mistake on the opportunity, sniping a wrister past Kevin Lankinen for a quick 2–0 Calgary lead. The tally was Gaudreau’s 600th career point.

The Hawks would answer back with a goal of their own. Forgotten forward Tyler Johnson netted his second goal as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks. It was his first goal since Oct. 24 after his neck surgery.

Tyler Johnson SNIPES IT HOME! 1-2 GAME! pic.twitter.com/87INV5725a

The Flames added to their lead late in the period after another Blackhawks defensive lapse. Seth Jones fired a puck around the boards that was not recovered by Patrick Kane. Calgary’s Oliver Kylington won the puck along with the boards and fired a shot on the net that was deflected by Blake Coleman for the goal. It was the third Flames goal of the period, extending the gap to 3–1.

Despite being outshot 14–6 in the first period, the Blackhawks were lucky to be down two goals. Lankinen made two great saves on Gaudreau and Calle Jarnkrok during the period to keep the Blackhawks within two goals.

Second period

At the midway point in the second period, the Blackhawks had yet to crack 10 shots on goal. Despite being outshot 26–9, the Blackhawks cut the Flames’ lead to one goal on their 10th shot of the period. Alec Regula fired a pretty harmless-looking shot toward the net. The shot hit the post and bounced off Jakob Markstrom’s back for Regula’s first career NHL goal, trimming the margin to 3–2.

— Mario Tirabassi (@Mario_Tirabassi) April 19, 2022

Despite “winning” the second period, the Blackhawks still trailed by one goal.

Third period

In the third period, the Blackhawks played their best period of the game, recording nine shots on goal while Calgary had six. Despite outshooting the Flames, the Blackhawks were not able to scratch across another goal.

The Flames tacked on two empty-net goals to seal the victory. The Flames got one goal from Gaudreau and one from Kylington. The final score was 5–2 Calgary.

Analysis

The positives from Monday’s game were the play of Regula and Alex Vlasic. Both young defensemen appear to be gaining confidence on the ice. Regula netted his first NHL goal and first point. Vlasic was able to use positioning and size to prevent some rushes from the Flames. Both defensemen are hopefully going to help anchor the Blackhawks’ blue line for years to come.

The Blackhawks have six games remaining this season, with the next coming on the road on Wednesday against the Arizona Coyotes. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 p.m. CDT.

In their second game of the new year, the Chicago Blackhawks looked to rebound after their ghastly performance against the Nashville Predators on New Year’s Day. Despite Marc-Andre Fleury coming out of the COVID-19 protocol, the team went with the rookie Arvid Soderblom in net. Soderblom had nine starts at Rockford before being added to the taxi squad. He made his NHL debut in relief of Collin Delia in the aforementioned contest against Nashville.

In their last meeting, the Calgary Flames put the Blackhawks away with a three-goal third period back in November. In this contest, it was the second period for the Flames that crushed the Blackhawks.

First period

With the Blackhawks playing their first game of the new year on Saturday, they had a distinct advantage over the rusty Flames, who had not played since last Thursday due to COVID-19 postponements, while the Hawks were playing their second game since Dec. 18.

At the the midway point of the period, Henrik Borgstrom won a board battle against two Flames defenders and got the puck to Patrick Kane. Kane then found Alex DeBrincat for a quick one-timer goal from the net front. It was DeBrincat’s 18th goal of the season and first goal of the new year.

After pressuring the Hawks early, Calgary capitalized on a Blackhawks mistake. Matthew Tkachuk redirected a pass from Johnny Gaudreau to the tie game at 1–1. That was the only blemish on Soderblom in the first period. The 22-year-old made five saves on the six shots on goal in the period.

Second period

In the second period, the Blackhawks took up residency in the penalty box after committing three penalties. The first came from DeBrincat, who was sent to the box for a phantom hooking penalty against Dillon Dube. The Flames capitalized on the power play, getting their second goal of the game from Elias Lindholm. Lindholm fired a shot from the point that went past Soderblom, who was screened by Tkachuk on the goal. Less than minute later, Philipp Kurashev continued the parade to the box and was called for hooking on Blake Coleman. On the Kurashev penalty, the Blackhawks were able to hold the Flames scoreless.

Later in the period, Josiah Slavin flipped the puck over the boards on the opposite side of the ice for a delay of game penalty. This was the third penalty of the period charged to the Blackhawks, and once again, the penalty kill unit was able to hold the Flames scoreless. Despite committing three penalties, it was the power play that failed the Blackhawks the most in the second period.

With a little more than three minutes to go in the period, the Blackhawks finally got a power play of their own, as former Blackhawks defenseman Nikita Zadorov tripped Kurashev on a strong move to the net. Despite being on the power play, the Hawks gave up two shorthanded rushes. Soderblom fought off the first attempt with a great save. Unfortunately, he was not able to stave off the second rush, as Trevor Lewis was able to beat Soderblom with a backhanded shot. Both Kane and Erik Gustafsson were out of position on the goal.

The second period ended with the Blackhawks being down 3–1.

Third period

In the third period, the Blackhawks kept committing penalties. Kirby Dach turned the puck over in the neutral zone that lead to a Flames breakaway chance for Dube. Dube was held by Dach on the play, resulting in a penalty shot. Dube’s shot was denied by the Soderblom, as he recorded one of his 11 saves in the period.

Soderblom kept the Blackhawks in the game, making 10 more saves before being pulled for an extra attacker. With Soderblom on the bench, the Flames add their fourth goal of the game. Soderblom was then brought back in the game and surrendered a goal to Gaudreau on 2-on-1 break. The final score was Calgary 5, Chicago 1.

Analysis

The good

In spite of the loss, Soderblom was impressive in his first NHL start, making 37 of 41 save attempts for a .902 save percentage. With the Blackhawks lacking future goalie potential in their organization, if Soderblom continues his solid play, he could eyed a potential tandem partner or future starter with the Blackhawks.

In addition to the good play from Soderblom, Borgstrom had his best game of the season. He was winning board battles and was very noticeable on the ice.

The bad

Gustafsson, who had been playing well as of late, was bad against the Flames. The last two games, his pairing has been chasing the puck way too much and he was badly outplayed on the Lewis shorthanded goal.

Interim Head Coach Derek King said three or four guys were not ready to play, which was an improvement from half the team not being ready to play against Nashville on Saturday.

The Blackhawks’ next game is against Colorado on Tuesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST.

The Chicago Blackhawks limped to a 2–2 record on their four-game Western Conference road trip, finishing with a 5–2 loss to the Western Conference-leading Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.

Following an early scrap between Kirby Dach and Blake Coleman, the Flames struck first. Dillon Dube scored 1:19 into the contest to give the home side a quick 1–0 lead. Rasmus Andersson and Noah Hanifin picked up helpers on the play.

Before the halfway mark of the period, the Hawks leveled the contest. Reese Johnson and Ryan Carpenter battled for possession in the Flames’ zone. Carpenter found Brandon Hagel at the top of the left circle, and he snapped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Jacob Markstrom for his second goal in as many games since returning from injury.

Moments later, Connor Murphy turned the puck over in the Chicago zone and Milan Lucic scored his fifth goal of the season at 13:06 of the first period to re-establish a Calgary lead at 2–1.

The 2–1 margin carried over into the second frame. Just under four minutes into the period, Markstrom tuned the puck over and the Johnson wasted no time, slotting home his first NHL goal to level the score at 2–2, notching his second point of the night.

The two teams would trade chances, ending the period knotted at two goals apiece. Marc-Andre Fleury was solid through the first two periods with 25 saves.

In the third period, both teams battled back and forth, until Matthew Tkachuk, from behind the goal line, banked the puck in off of Seth Jones to put Calgary back on top at 3–2 with just over five minutes to play. With the goalie pulled, the Hawks surrendered an empty-net goal at the hands of Trevor Lewis, and then a second empty-netter from Johnny Gaudreau to seal the win for the Flames.

Fleury did all he could with 34 saves on the night, continuing his strong play of late.

Analysis

Caleb Jones fared well in his return to the lineup with 15:20 of ice time.

As for the Hawks, their 2–2 record on the road trip, though not a death sentence, should not be a surprise. Chicago has wins against teams they should beat, yet no signature wins on the season. In the last two games, Fleury has had to make 40 and 34 saves, as the Hawks continue to be badly outshot by their opponents. In the four-game road swing, Chicago was outshot 145–95.

Dominik Kubalik and Jonathan Toews have not tallied a point in their last five games. That is not a recipe for success at any level of hockey, no matter how well your goalie is playing. This is beginning to have the same feel of the post-Cup, Corey Crawford era, where the Hawks simply relied on their goaltender to garner the occasional win. This indeed will lead to more disappointment for Chicago fans, as it will be another year being on the outside looking in when the postseason begins, an even bigger problem for the franchise given they traded away their first-round pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.

The Blackhawks will have the chance to bounce back on Friday when they host the St. Louis Blues in an afternoon tilt. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CST at the United Center.

After Jacob Markstrom won Wednesday’s game for the Canucks, the Blackhawks looked to rebound against the Calgary Flames for some Saturday night hockey.

The Blackhawks wasted no time getting things going. As fans were settling in their seats, and admittedly, writers for settling into their favorite chair with an ice-cold beverage, Jonathan Toews put the visitors out front early with a beautiful snipe from the left-wing side of the ice.

Slater Koekkoek’s pass squeaked through the pinching defenseman for Calgary and found Toews in stride with plenty of room to spare.

Despite the hot start for the Hawks, it did not take long for Calgary to respond. About two minutes after Toews’s tally, Sam Bennett tipped home a pass in the blue paint from Dillon Dube to knot the game up. Bennett was able to hide and get to Robin Lehner’s backside for the tip.

As the period neared its mid-point, the Hawks’ top line went back to work. As Patrick Kane went down low, he dished the puck to Toews, who found Dominik Kubalik from behind the Calgary net to give the visitors the lead once again. Kubalik was able to find space in the low slot and capitalize on the Toews feed.

The Flames refused to go away. Sam Bennett once again tallied for the Flames to tie the game once again. This time, a slick Dube pass sprung Bennett on a breakaway and he beat Lehner to his blocker side.

As the game moved into the second period, the Blackhawks were primed for an onslaught. Four minutes into the middle frame, Brandon Saad tallied on a nice set up from Kane to restore the Blackhawks’ lead. Saad found space and beat David Rittich five-hole to finish on his 18th of the season.

Just over a minute later, an unlikely name tallied to force the lead to two goals. A cross-ice pass for Calgary was intercepted in their defensive zone by Alex Nylander. He walked in on Rittich and made one move to beat the goalie for the fourth tally of the night. Nylander showed that skill that made him the eighth overall draft pick years ago.

The Blackhawks apply some pressure with their fourth goal (via Alex Nylander) of the night against the Calgary Flames pic.twitter.com/eZMwQXOMGT

The Flames threatened after Elias Lindholm scored on a big shot from the mid-slot. However, two late period tallies would open the game up for the Blackhawks.

With just over two minutes remaining in the period, the “third line” went to work in the Calgary zone. Kirby Dach and Dylan Strome were both working beneath the goal line, ultimately stealing the puck from the Calgary defense. Strome gained possession and found his friend Alex DeBrincat who finished for his 14th of the season. “The Cat” has had a tough season, so seeing him put the frozen biscuit in the net was a pretty sight for Hawks fans everywhere.

On the next shift, the fourth line went to work in the offensive zone as well. Matthew Highmore found the puck below the goal line and hit Alex Nylander with a sweet pass in the slot and the Swede beat Cam Talbot, as he took over for Rittich, to extend the Blackhawks’ lead.

Elias Lindholm threatened once again, tallying his 27th goal of the season on the power play. However, Patrick Kane finished on an empty-net goal just two and a half minutes later to seemingly put the game out of reach. However, with a minute to play, Kirby Dach took the puck all the way up ice and, after being denied on his first shot, finished on a slick little backhand to add the eighth goal of the night and the win for the Blackhawks.

Along the boards

There was a lot to be pleased about in Saturday night’s game. Although it feels like this was a day late and a dollar short, the win shows this team has players with potential.

Kirby Dach has had really nice chemistry with Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome. They’ve played together at times this season and had a lot of success when they do. Maybe it’s worth keeping this group together on the so-called third line and see what happens.

Alex Nylander was a pleasant surprise on Saturday. Sadly, the young Swede has not been able to find any consistency with his offensive game. He has had flashes, like this two-goal performance against the Flames, but struggles to consistently be a threat. If Nylander can ever truly put it together, he would become a solid contributor for this team, maybe becoming a 20-goal scorer. However, that remains to be seen.

Toews and Kane both had three points on Saturday, which is always encouraging. When the stars are playing well, good things happen. Even The-Rink’s very own Mario Tirabassi knows the formula.

That’s all they need to do to make the playoffs then…#Blackhawks https://t.co/MQlBO6PllX

— Mario Tirabassi (@Mario_Tirabassi) February 16, 2020

However, it seems like it may be too late for this team. Now, with the trade deadline rapidly approaching, moves should be made by Stan Bowman to improve this team for the future. Trading players like Erik Gustafsson, possibly Corey Crawford, and, if the right deal came along, Brandon Saad to set up the team going forward. Although I believe Saad can be an answer in the future for this team, he would be the most appealing piece that teams will look at.

There is a lot of possibilities over the next 12 days or so. Blackhawks fans… be sure to keep your ears to the ground and keep up with The-Rink for any news and updates.
