New York Rangers goaltender Dylan Garand stopped 27 Chicago Blackhawks shots on his way to his first NHL win, defeating the Blackhawks 6-1 at Madison Square Garden. Chicago was led by forward Nick Lardis, who scored eighth goal of the season.

Lardis gave the Blackhawks (27-33-13) the early lead at the 17:34 mark of the first period. Defenseman Alex Vlasic made a nice play and found forward Tyler Bertuzzi at the side of the net, who shoveled a pass over to Lardis, who beat Garand for the only exciting play for the Blackhawks all night.

J.T. Miller would tie the game at the 18:32 mark beating Chicago goaltender Arvid Soderblom to tie the score at 1-1.

In the second period, Matthew Robertson gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead beating Soderblom over his shoulder off a rebound from a Miller shot. New York would score two more times before the middle period ended when Adam Sykora scored the first NHL goal of his career at the 8:20 mark and Jonny Brodzinksi extended the Rangers’ lead to 4-1 at the 16:07 mark.

After being outshot 31-15 in the first two periods, Chicago did not muster much sustained pressure besides almost doubling their shot total with 13 shots on goal in the third period. New York would find the back of the net on the power paly when Alexis Lafreniere scored at the 13:17 mark and Brodzinski would score his second of the game, and sixth of the season, to finish off the Blackhawks 6-1.

Analysis

Chicago played like a bottom team in the NHL most of the night and fans found out very quickly that this has always been a bottom-five defense in the league.

Tee times are close for this young team that has fizzled as of late, having lost six of their last eight games.

Sacha Boisvert got into his first tussle in the NHL with Will Borgen. It was great to see the young kid step up and try and show his worth to the organization, but this team is far from having the “fight” it needs.

Spencer Knight stopped all 21 shots for the Chicago Blackhawks in a 3-0 whitewashing over the New York Rangers on Wednesday night at the United Center. Connor Bedard added a goal and an assist to snap Chicago’s losing streak. With the victory, Chicago improves their record to 13-11-6 for the season.

Louis Crevier scored his third of the season in the second period, shorthanded, beating Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin at the 7:08 mark. The goal was assisted by Matt Grzelcyk and Jason Dickinson. Crevier showed the fans his best Bedard imitation with a little shake and bake with a quick breakaway move.

Bedard was not be to outdone, scoring his 19th goal of the season on a snap shot at the 14:27 mark of the second period. Andre Burakovsky took the puck hard to the net on the left wing and found a streaking Bedard in front of the net for the 2-0 lead.

Chicago hits the road on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. CST puck drop in Missouri against the St. Louis Blues. Fans can find your favorite team on ESPN+ and Hulu.

Analysis

Knight continues to be a brick wall for the his team on many nights. With Wednesday’s shutout, the 24-year-old now has seven career shutouts and two for his current team. Knight sits with a 10-6-5 record and a 2.50 goals against with a .916 save percentage.

Crevier has been a pleasant surprise on both ends of the ice. The mammoth former seventh-round pick has three goals and eight assists for the season while averaging 14:17 minutes of ice time per game. This type of production from someone not expecting to do much as a last-round pick is an excellent story fans should gravitate toward.

The Chicago Blackhawks (13–25–2) fell to the New York Rangers (18–20–1) Sunday afternoon at the United Center 6–2 in front of a young and quiet crowd. Connor Bedard assisted on the opening goal to extend his point streak to seven games and defenseman Wyatt Kaiser scored his first career NHL goal late in the game when it did not matter. Arvid Soderblom (6–10–1) stopped 28 of the 34 shots he faced in defeat.

First period

Chicago opened the scoring at the 5:37 mark when Bedard gathered a loose puck in the Rangers zone and found a kneeling Tyler Bertuzzi open for a backdoor feed and an easy tap-in for his 14th goal of the season. Bertuzzi made a nice play to get to the net and did an even better job of keeping his stick on the ice, as the Bedard feed slid past two Rangers for the easy goal. Bertuzzi – an actual NHL talent on this team – continues to be a nice spark plug next to Bedard early in the season as the 19-year old extended his point streak to seven games, six of those games being losses.

Tyler Bertuzzi buries it to open the scoring! pic.twitter.com/Jls3KgtrJi

— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) January 5, 2025

The Blackhawks’ goal found the back of the net after a Rangers giveaway but would be answered by the 17 Blackhawks giveaways they were credited with for the afternoon game. Chicago was as careless with the puck as they have been in weeks and the only aspect of their game that is worse is their lack of clearing space in front of their goaltender.

Jonny Brodzinski and William Borgen both scored for the Rangers to answer the Bertuzzi goal before the period ended and gave the Rangers a 2–1 lead heading into the intermission.

Second period

Filip Chytil, Reilly Smith and Vincent Trocheck each scored to put the game out of reach and give the Rangers a 5–1 lead and did not look like a team that just played a hard-fought game the day before against the Washington Capitals.

As the camera crew at the United Center did an excellent job showcasing the young children at the game, some audibly getting an “awe” from the bored Madison Avenue crowd, the Blackhawks defenseman were doing nothing in their own zone. Allan Nolan – drafted 60 spots too soon by Stan Bowman – looks lost and timid out on the ice and results in opposing players finding good positioning for tap-in and rebound chances. The overrated stat of plus-minus was not wrong in this game as Allan was a -4.

Louis Crevier looks like he is playing hot potato with the puck on his stick in the defensive zone and will be a nice addition to Rockford hopefully soon. At 6-foot-8 and 234 pounds, it would be a nice addition to his game if he were to clear the front of his net. The game looks like it is going too fast for the 23-year-old at this level.

The lone bright spot of the period came when Kaiser buried his first NHL goal past Rangers goaltender Louis Domingue to take us to intermission at 5–2 and give something for the home fans to cheer about as the biggest cheer came when the Bears kicked a last-second field goal to down the rival Green Bay Packers. The televisions in the 300 level were packed with fans watching another last-place team in the city, but the obvious cheer was a laughable one for most fans that were in their seats.

Third period

Chytil scored his second of the game and 10th goal of the season in the middle stages of the last frame and ended the scoring for both teams. Chicago would fall to the struggling Rangers 6–2 as 80% of the crowd was already on their way home to put their kids to bed.

Analysis

This is a bad hockey team that will challenge for the first overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft. Former head coach Luke Richardson did his best to try and lose games 2–1 with a style to keep games tight and hope a lucky bounce would end up in the back of the net. New bench boss Anders Sorensen has opened up the reigns a bit and is trying to let the defense turn into offense, but the Blackhawks do not have the horses to compete this way, evident by their 35 goals given up in their past seven games; four of those games they have given up six goals.

Bedard and Bertuzzi are fun to watch but can only do so much offensively and both come with their faults defensively. If this team is going to continue to be the worst in the NHL, at least let these two try and generate in the offensive zone. Bedard is too good to be playing with donkeys.

Soderblom has come back down to Earth after his nine periods of Vezina Trophy play early in the season, but he – and Petr Mrazek – get zero help in front of the net. Opposing teams are able to get great position on most nights and some players spend so much time there that the city parking enforcement came out to put a boot on them for having so many parking tickets. If there is any takeaway from the embarrassment going on with this team the past few weeks, it is that there is no one who can clear the front of the net and no one who can do the dirty work in the defensive zone in the corners.

The Blackhawks return to home ice on Wednesday for a matchup with the Colorado Avalanche for a 6:30 p.m. CST puck drop. The internet clams the game will be seen on TNT but it is always fun to guess if the game will be on TV or not; the anticipation may be the best part of the week for fans.

The Chicago Blackhawks open a three-game road swing through the Tri-State area on Monday night at Madison Square Garden against the struggling New York Rangers. The Blackhawks were coming off a 4–2 loss at against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday, which marked the debut of interim head coach Anders Sorensen. Looking to get him his first NHL win, the Blackhawks started Arvid Soderblom in goal against the Rangers’ Igor Shesterkin. The game also marked the return of Kevin Korchinski to the Hawks’ lineup after being recalled from Rockford on Sunday along with goaltender Drew Commesso, who served as the backup to Soderblom. Petr Mrazek was placed on the injured reserve with a groin injury.

The Blackhawks scored first for the 17th time this season when a Mika Zibanejad turnover led to Taylor Hall setting up Tyler Bertuzzi for his sixth of the season.

Late in the period, Will Cuylle tied it at 1–1 with a shorthanded goal. Sam Carrick rushed down the ice and drove the net. Soderblom left a big rebound that Cuylle pounced on for his 10th of the season at 19:17. The game was tied after 20 minutes.

Second period

The Hawks regained the lead when Connor Bedard fed Hall on a 2-on-1 for his sixth of the season at 6:16.

The Hawks took a one-goal lead into the locker room after two periods.

Third period

There was no scoring in the third, but the final frame was a microcosm of the entire game, as the Hawks consistently pressured the puck and played an overall strong road game to earn a 2–1 win and make Sorensen the first Swedish-born head coach to record a win in the NHL.

Analysis

It was a strong start to the Hawks’ three-game road trip in a hostile environment. The Hawks were clearly the better team from start to finish, as they played with more energy and were strong defensively. Soderblom continued his strong start to the season with 29 saves. In his return to the big club, Korchinski had a strong game, including one play where he skated stride for stride with former Blackhawk forward Artemi Panarin and defended him well.

The Hawks get a few days off before a Thursday night game at UBS Arena against the New York Islanders. Puck drop is at 6:30 p.m. CST on CHSN with the radio call on 720 WGN.

The Chicago Blackhawks came into Friday night’s action against the New York Rangers looking to break a losing skid. Going back to before the all-star break, they had dropped their previous five games. Their opponents had also outscored them 14–3, and they needed to find offense badly to get back on track.

Louis Crevier was in the lineup for Jarred Tinordi, and Rem Pitlick swapped into Zach Sanford’s spot on the forward lines.

First period

The Blackhawks got off to a good start in this game. They got a lot of good chances early on, with one paying off. Boris Katchouk got the puck and tried to pass it to Taylor Raddysh. The Rangers swatted the puck away on the pass, but it went right to Alex Vlasic. He buried a wrister past Igor Shesterkin, giving the Blackhawks a 1–0 lead early. Just a couple minutes later, though, the Rangers would answer. On a beautiful passing play, the puck would find its way to Alexis Lafreniere, who knotted things up at 1–1. A minute and a half later, the Blackhawks were effectively down a man due to a missing skate blade, and with bodies flying all over the ice, Chris Kreider got a tap-in to make it 2–1 New York. The period ended with the Blackhawks trailing 2–1.

Second period

After both teams traded good chances, halfway through the period, the Rangers would get another. They skated the puck in on Petr Mrazek, who made the initial save on a bad-angle shot. The puck sat right next to him, thought, and Jonny Brodzinski was able to put it home to make it 3–1 Rangers.

Third period

The Blackhawks did not give up on this game. It took until the 13:37 mark of the third for them to put another goal in the net, but they managed to do so. After a battle out in front, Nick Foligno got the puck right off of Shesterkin’s pad and put the puck past him to make the game 3–2. Then, with just over a minute left in the game, Jason Dickinson tipped a Seth Jones shot in front of the net past the Rangers’ goaltender, tying things up at 3–3 to send the game to overtime.

THE BLACKHAWKS TIE IT WITH A MINUTE LEFT pic.twitter.com/6auuJKfJY4

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Overtime

Unfortunately, the Blackhawks could not keep the momentum going into the overtime period. It was mostly good chances for the Rangers, and Mika Zibanejad would win it for the visitors. On a 3-on-2 opportunity, he put the puck up high over Mrazek’s shoulder to give the Rangers the 4–3 victory.

Analysis

The Blackhawks looked better in this game, as they actually continued to fight back, and managed to find their offense in the process. That is what has been missing the most on this losing streak, so it was good to see it come back. I wish this team had more secondary scoring, but they simply do not, as it was Foligno and Dickinson who came up with the final goals to send the game to overtime. Hopefully the offense will continue to come through moving on here, as this team can definitely fight against the best of them, as they proved on Friday.

The Blackhawks’ next game will be on Tuesday night against the Vancouver Canucks. That game will be at 7:30 p.m. CST on NBC Sports Chicago.

Connor Bedard made it to Broadway! Not as an actor in a musical but rather a budding NHL star for the Chicago Blackhawks, as he and his teammates visited Madison Square Garden on Thursday night to face the New York Rangers. The Original Six matchup featured two teams heading in opposite directions, with the Metropolitan Division-leading Rangers trying to win their first Stanley Cup since 1994 while the rebuilding Hawks have lost the first three games of their current five-game road swing, which wraps up Friday night in New Jersey. Petr Mrazek got the start in net for the Hawks against Igor Shesterkin for the Blueshirts.

The Rangers opened the scoring at the 13:00 mark of the first when former Blackhawk Artemi Panarin scored his 24th of the season. Vincent Trocheck knocked Bedard off the puck in the Rangers’ defensive zone and skated through the neutral zone and fed Alexis Lafreniere, who went cross ice to Panarin, who slapped a one-timer past Mrazek to give New York a 1–0 lead. The Rangers would take that lead into the locker room after one.

In the second period, the Rangers added to their lead on the power play when Chris Kreider scored his 20th of the season. After the puck took some crazy bounces from the top of the net and back on the ice and in the crease, Kreider skated in and his back skate knocked the puck in. A furious Mrazek screamed at the ref to review the call on the ice because he felt it was kicked into the net. After review, the call on the ice was upheld and the Rangers took a 2–0 lead at 7:25.

The Blackhawks cut the lead to 2–1 when former Ranger Colin Blackwell scored his first of the season. A nice stretch pass from new Blackhawk Jaycob Megan and a defensive breakdown by the Rangers led to a 2-on-1 and Boris Katchouck found a wide-open Blackwell, who deked Shesterkin for the goal at 17:03.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Just 91 seconds into the third period, the Rangers regained their two-goal lead when Rangers captain Jacob Trouba scored his third of the season. Trouba retrieved the puck from the left half boards and his rising shot went past Mrazek, who went down early.

Seventy seconds later, Jimmy Vesey took a cross-ice pass from Will Cuylle and shot it past Mrazek from the right circle for his eighth of the season. The Rangers led 4–1 at 2:41 of the third and that would be the final.

Analysis

With a rash of injuries to several regulars and AHL-quality talent being forced into the lineup to play alongside the team’s youth, the Blackhawks were overwhelmed against a talented Rangers team. Bedard, who was named to the NHL All Star Game on Thursday night, making him the youngest All Star in NHL history, had a relatively quiet night in his first career game at Madison Square Garden. Mrazek played fairly well and kept the game within reach, but the Hawks simply do not have enough consistency on offense to keep up with most teams in the NHL.

The Blackhawks will cross the Hudson River to face the New Jersey Devils on Friday night. Puck drop at 6 p.m. CST on NBCSCH with the radio call on AM 720 WGN.

The Chicago Blackhawks hosted the New York Rangers and have finally taken over the bottom spot in the NHL with a .310 points percentage. The Rangers could not come into Sunday’s affair any hotter, having won their past six games, and did not waste any time tonight jumping out to a 3–0 lead en route to a 7–1 victory.

The days of falling behind 3–0 and hoping this Chicago team could climb its way back into a game has long been forgotten. The Rangers found goals from Filip Chytil, Artemi Panarin and Kaapo Kakko in the first period.

Philipp Kurashev scored his fourth goal of the season in the second period. The 23-year-old forward continues to audition for his spot in the future, but as a one-trick pony (goal scorer?), that will most likely not be at the NHL level.

At the beginning of the season, the organization needed goaltender Arvid Soderblom to play as many nights in Rockford to continue to get adjusted to the pro level and not play behind a team trying to lose. The 23-year-old has been a sitting duck in net, and unfortunately, management will have a hard time evaluating if he can be the goaltender of the future. Soderblom was forced into action because of injury, but fans can start to see why protecting a rookie in their development is important. He stopped 19 of the 26 shots faced.

If you are looking for some silver linings, Jarrod Tinordi was the only plus player with his 6:12 minutes of ice time after catching a puck to an already stitched part of his face and exiting the game. Chicago also continues to win draws and fleeced the Rangers for 60% on Sunday.

Chicago will be back in action on Wednesday to face the Nashville Predators on home ice with a 7:30 p.m. CST puck drop.

The Chicago Blackhawks ended their eight-game skid with a 5–2 road win at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers on Saturday night. Both Max Domi and Patrick Kane registered three-point evenings, as Chicago’s power play clicked all night long.

— Reese Johnson opened up the scoring the scoring at the 2:38 mark, deflecting in a point shot from Jake McCabe. Petr Mrazek made 10 saves in the first frame and the Hawks began the second period with a 1–0 lead.

— Kane banged home a rebound on a 5-on-3 man advantage and on the ensuing 5-on-4, Domi made it 3–0 with a laser from the top of the left circle. The Rangers’ Mika Zibanejad made it 3–1 before the end of the second period.

— Arvid Soderblom relieved the injured Mrazek, and the Hawks extended their lead when Taylor Raddysh deflected a Kane wrist shot for another power play strike. New York’s Chris Kreider would cut it to 4–2, but Domi would score his second of the night with an empty-netter with just over a minute to play.

— Though obviously not part of the scoring, it was great to see Jujhar Khaira get a small amount of revenge on Jacob Trouba. Though the scrap does not make up for Trouba’s cheap shot on Khaira last season—or the one he dished out on Andreas Athanasiou during Saturday’s game—it is a small moral victory nonetheless.

Chicago will stay in the area and face the New York Islanders on Sunday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CST.

The Chicago Blackhawks were busy out east before returning home Tuesday night. With a loss to the New York Rangers on Friday, but responded with a shootout win against the New York Islanders on Sunday, Interim Head Coach Derek King’s squad has plenty of competitive spirit in them. A rematch with the Rangers Tuesday night on West Madison Street led to another chance for the Blackhawks to continue to dig out of the hole they dug themselves to start the season.

First period

If you bet the over on Tuesday night, you were one happy human after the first period. The Blackhawks went into intermission up 2–1 thanks to goals from Erik Gustafsson and Kirby Dach. Jacob Trouba tallied the lone goal for the Rangers in the first 20 minutes.

Shots were 21–17 for the Blackhawks after the first frame. They had some great looks and could have easily had three or four goals.

Second period

Now, the outcome of this game is one thing, but a very scary situation occurred in the second period in Chicago Tuesday night. Blackhawks forward Jujhar Khaira took a shoulder from Trouba and lay unconscious on the ice. He was taken off on a stretcher and went to Northwestern Hospital.

Not too long after, Blackhawks defensemen Riley Stillman answered the bell and fought Trouba. His teammates appreciated it. Overall, the good news is that Khaira was released from the hospital Wednesday morning and a full recovery is expected, though there is no timeline for his return to the ice.

Third period

With Khaira in the back of their minds, the Blackhawks fell apart in the final frame. The Rangers tallied four goals in the third and won 6–2 in Chicago.

The Blackhawks were given Wednesday off before hitting the road for two games in Canada this week, Thursday in Montreal and Saturday in Toronto. For you gamblers out there, the Blackhawks are -130 vs Montreal, and the over/under is set at 5.5. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST on Thursday.

On Saturday night, the Chicago Blackhawks took on the red-hot New York Rangers hoping to capitalize off of earning a solid road win against the Washington Capitals on Thursday. However, it was not meant to be. Though the Hawks came out with great pace early, they were downed by a better team 3–2.

In the first period, the Hawks generated a number of chances, hit the post twice and then Patrick Kane finally gave the visitors a 1–0 lead. On a Chicago rush, Brandon Hagel slapped the puck out of the air just below the goal line—below his shoulder but above the crossbar—to an open Kane in front of the net. Kane tapped it in, and though the Rangers challenged the play, the goal stood and New York was assessed a minor penalty. Seth Jones notched the secondary assist on Kane’s goal.

— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) December 5, 2021

Early in the second period with Chicago up 1–0, Henrik Borgstrom took a four-minute double-minor penalty for high sticking, and the Rangers capitalized. Less than a minute into the penalty, Artemi Panarin set up Ryan Strome to make it 1–1. With 2:35 to go in the second period, the Rangers took a 2–1 lead when Adam Fox put away a rebound after Panarin fired the puck to the net. New York would take the one-goal lead into the third period.

The Hawks had a few chances throughout the third, but with just over five minutes to go, Panarin scored from the right circle. It would be his third point of the night to make it 3–1. With 1:19 left and Kevin Lankinen pulled, Alex DeBrincat scored on a one-timer from the left circle. The puck snuck through Ranger netminder Alexandar Georgiev and a replay review showed that the puck crossed the goal line just before the whistle sounded, cutting the gap to 3–2.

Chicago pressed for an equalizer, but were unable to tie the game. Lankinen was strong with 28 saves on the evening, but it was not enough. Chicago has a quick turnaround with a contest against the New York Islanders on Sunday night.

Analysis

Kirby Dach’s confidence is visibly shaken. He is having difficulty handling the puck, he is rarely generating scoring opportunities and has a mere five assists in his last 15 games. He has not scored a goal since Oct. 27, and it does not seem like one is coming anytime soon. Perhaps Derek King should consider having Dach sit in the press box for a game to think some things over, or better yet, though it would be a tough PR pill to swallow for the Blackhawks, sending Dach to Rockford for a few games to find his touch would not be the worst thing for him.

Though fans are thrilled that Jeremey Colliton is gone and King has brought a more competitive brand of hockey to this lineup, the Hawks were eight points out of playoff contention when King took over, and they are still eight points out of a playoff spot after Saturday night. They are once again at the foot of the mountain looking up. They will very likely miss the playoffs this season, and focusing on actual development of young players and parting ways with those you can move for future assets should be the preferred route as opposed to attempting to climb back into contention. Heard this song before? I am sure you have. It has been on repeat for some time and still may not get turned off for a while as this team continues to struggle.
