The Chicago Blackhawks faced the Utah Mammoth for the second time in a week on Thursday night. This would be the fourth game of the season against them, with the Blackhawks looking to sweep the season series in their final game against Utah for the season. The only lineup change from Monday night would be that Spencer Knight would be back in goal after missing the last few games due to illness.

First period

The first period was relatively uneventful. Neither team took any penalties, and Connor Bedard had the best chance of the frame with a backhander on net off an Andre Burakovsky pass in front of the net. The Mammoth out-shot the Blackhawks 6-4, but the score remained 0-0 after one.

Second period

The second period had more action than the first. The Blackhawks out-shot Utah this time around 8-7, which has not happened many times this year. The Mammoth would get the first goal of the game, however. With six minutes gone by in the period, Andre Burakovsky had a bad turnover in the offensive end. That led to a 2-on-1 break the other way for Utah. Logan Cooley found Dylan Guenther, who put home his 31st of the season, giving the Mammoth the 1-0 lead. They would take that lead into the intermission, 1-0 Utah.

Third period

Just a couple of minutes into the third period, the Blackhawks found themselves in a 4-on-3 power play. With Ilya Mikheyev and Jack McBain both getting called for roughing, Clayton Keller got called for a high stick to put one more Mammoth player in the penalty box. The Blackhawks would use the whole time, but would get a conversion. Bedard found Tyler Bertuzzi in his office in front of the net. He put home his 28th goal of the season to knot things up at 1-1.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Seven minutes later, the Blackhawks would get another. Bertuzzi got a shot on goal that produced a good rebound. Teuvo Teravainen could not get his stick on it, but he kicked it toward the open side of the net. Frank Nazar got there in time to poke it in the net, 2-1 Blackhawks.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Three and a half minutes later, Utah would tie things up again. Alex Vlasic got his pocket picked by Michael Carcone trying to get out of the defensive zone. He found JJ Peterka, who buried a shot through the five hole of Knight, knotting things up at 2-2. This game would go to overtime to decide the winner.

Overtime

The Mammoth would get the first couple of good chances of overtime. The first chance came just 35 seconds in, with Mikhail Sergachev skating all the way into the offensive zone. He got the shot on net, but was stopped by Knight. Old friend Nick Schmaltz got a chance in front, but could not get a great shot off as he got in tight on goal. That stop by Knight sent the Blackhawks down the ice in a 3-on-2 break. Vlasic wrang a shot off the post that was picked up by Bedard. He buried the rebound, giving the Blackhawks the 3-2 overtime win.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Analysis

The Blackhawks played an iffy game. With two bad turnovers leading to Mammoth goals, the puck possession in this one left a lot to be desired. They made the most of the opportunities they had, but really struggled in the faceoff dot. They were lucky to will this game to overtime with the last few minutes of the third being dominated by the Mammoth, with the Blackhawks unable to clear the puck from their own end at times. Bedard and Bertuzzi connecting on two goals is not a huge surprise, as those two have been great this season when paired together and seem to be on the same wavelength in reading what the other is going to do. Knight looked solid in his return after illness, which is good to see that there is not much rust that needs shaking off.

The Blackhawks next game is on Saturday night in Las Vegas against the Vegas Golden Knights. That game is a late one, being at 9 p.m. CDT on CHSN.

The Chicago Blackhawks came into Monday night’s action against the Utah Mammoth having a rough start to March. They carried a 1-1-2 record thus far, with two tough overtime losses to the Dallas Stars and Winnipeg Jets. Losing some of the veterans they traded at the deadline likely did not help, but this team is still a solid group who should be playing better hockey than that record would reflect. There would be a couple of lineup changes in this game. Sam Lafferty would check in for Oliver Moore in the forward group, and Drew Commesso would get his first start of this recall in place of Arvid Soderblom, with Spencer Knight still sick.

First period

Halfway through the first, we would get our first goal of the game. After a faceoff win, the Blackhawks attempted to clear the puck, but were unable to get it past the point. It found its way to Nick DeSimon, who put a shot towards the net that was deflected in by Barrett Hayton, 1-0 Utah. Four minutes later, the Blackhawks would get one back. Ryan Donato put a tough-angle shot toward the net. The puck went off of Andrew Mangiapane in front, who pocketed his first goal as a Blackhawk, knotting things up 1-1.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Unfortunately, the Mammoth would retake the lead just under three minutes after that. On another bad clearing attempt, the Blackhawks would not be able to get the puck out of their defensive zone. Clayton Keller found Dylan Guenther, who tucked the puck under the pads of Commesso, giving Utah the lead at 2-1. They would take that lead into the first intermission with the Blackhawks having work to do to get that goal back.

Second period

The second period had a lot of penalties early on. Trading off, Utah took the first, with Logan Cooley getting called for holding the stick. Then, Connor Bedard took one for hooking. The Blackhawks then got a huge chance on net. Ilya Mikheyev, who has been so good at getting pucks to the net, had a prime chance that was stopped by a great save by Vitek Vanecek, but he did draw a penalty that put the Blackhawks back on the power play. They were unable to convert on that opportunity, however, and Utah kept their 2-1 lead.

With 4:25 left in the second, Bedard put a shot toward the net that went wide. Andre Burakovsky found it at the side of the net, and tucked it past Vanecek beautifully, knotting things up at 2-2.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

That score would stay moving to the third, with things tied up at 2-2.

Third period

Both teams had a few good chances in the third period. Bedard came so close to scoring, but could not poke the puck through the legs of Vanecek on his best chance of the game. The Mammoth would get one more great chance, with Guenther on the doorstep again. Commesso proved up to the task, though, and kept the puck out, sending this game to overtime.

Overtime

Halfway through overtime, the Blackhawks got another power play. Old friend Nick Schmaltz got called for trip, giving the Blackhawks the man advantage. On the 4-on-3 power play, the puck found its way to Frank Nazar. With Tyler Bertuzzi screening the goalie, he would bury the wrister, giving the Blackhawks the 3-2 win.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Analysis

This game was one of the Blackhawks’ better games of the year on the whole. They led every statistical category, converting on the power play, winning more faceoffs and returning physicality for physicality better than many other games this year. All around, this game had a lot to like. The young guys played well and the veterans chipped in with a couple from guys who needed to get the monkey off their backs. Seeing Burakovsky and Mangiapane get goals was huge, as these are the guys this team needs to step up the rest of the way this season.

The Blackhawks’ next game is in Utah on Thursday night. That game will be at 8 p.m. CDT on CHSN.

After the Hawks’ loss to the Colorado Avalanche, head coach Jeff Blashill and captain Nick Foligno said the teams needs more secondary scoring. In Sunday’s 4-0 victory over the Utah Mammoth, they got goals from their secondary scorers. The Hawks got two goals from Teuvo Teravainen and goals from Landon Slaggert and Foligno.

In addition to getting secondary scoring, Arvid Soderblom recorded his first career shutout.

First period

In the first period, Chicago’s power play continued to produce. After winning a puck off the board, Tyler Bertuzzi found Teravainen for the goal.

Analysis

The Hawks finally got their first post-Olympic break win in impressive fashion. Soderblom, who has not played in a month, looked great in net. The Hawks also got offense from players not named Bertuzzi or Connor Bedard. The Hawks need to continue to find ways to get scoring output from other players the rest of the season.

Prior to the game, Frank Seravalli revealed his predictions for next year’s lineup. Much to the chagrin of many Blackhawks fans, the Hawks will not be adding many players in free agency. While people are upset, they need to realize that free agency is currently dead.

While free agency might be dead, trades will be the way new talent is acquired. The Blackhawks figure to active this week, possibly trading veterans such as Connor Murphy, Jason Dickinson, Sam Lafferty and Ilya Mikheyev. These moves figure to bring back draft picks and open spots for Anton Frondell, Nick Lardis and others.

The Blackhawks’ next game is Tuesday against the Winnipeg Jets.

The Chicago Blackhawks came into Monday night’s action looking for their first win of the season. They had dropped every game so far, only gaining one point in an overtime loss versus the Boston Bruins. Spencer Knight got the start in net for the Blackhawks, with more changes happening at forward than anywhere else in the lineup. Jason Dickinson would be back in the lineup, with Lukas Reichel and Sam Lafferty coming out of the lineup. The Blackhawks rolled seven defensemen in this contest, with Artyom Levshunov drawing back in after being a healthy scratch against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

First period

This came would start with a good defensive battle. Some hits were doled out both ways, with the Blackhawks getting the majority of the scoring chances. The closest came on a Teuvo Teravainen shot from the right circle that beat Vitek Vanecek, but didn’t find twine as it rang off the far post. The strangest thing happened with about six minutes to go, when the lights just randomly dipped in the United Center.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The period would end in the same scoreless tie that it started with.

Second period

The second period was more of the same early on. Mostly, though, the action centered on the Blackhawks’ end of the ice, with Utah getting far more shots than they allowed early on. With just under 10 and a half minutes to go in the period, Mikheyev got the puck down low and tried a stuff shot on net that got past Vanecek for the first goal of the game, putting the Blackhawks up 1-0.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The Blackhawks killed off the one penalty they took in the period, keeping their 1-0 leading going into the intermission.

Third period

The Mammoth struck early in this period. The Blackhawks had a dump-in from their end, getting fresh bodies on the ice. They didn’t get back on defense in time, leading Dylan Guenther to get a good chance that sent the rebound to John-Jason Peterka, who buried his first of the season to knot things up 1-1.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

With just over 11 minutes left in the game, the Blackhawks went on the power play. Mikhail Sergachev got called for a hold on Connor Bedard, giving Chicago the man advantage. They did indeed take advantage, with Nick Foligno finding a wide-open Andre Burakovsky, who potted his second as a Blackhawk, 2-1 Chicago.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

With 12 seconds left, Bedard won a defensive-zone draw to get the puck out of danger. Mikheyev would put one more goal on the board with the empty-netter, and the Blackhawks would take the win 3-1.

Analysis

The Blackhawks, despite looking like they weren’t quite ready to play at times in this game, managed to make the plays they needed to get the win. The line of Mikheyev, Dickinson and Ryan Donato is a feisty one and hopefully will stay intact the rest of the season. Knight continued his strong start to the season. Even though the Blackhawks hadn’t won yet, he is the reason that the Hawks were close at all in each of his appearances. Overall, this was a good team effort to get the W.

The Utah Hockey Club (33–29–12) ruined the NHL debuts of forward Oliver Moore and defenseman Sam Rinzel of the Chicago Blackhawks (21–44–9) on home ice 5–2 on Sunday afternoon. Rinzel had four shots in 20:15 minutes of ice time.

“It felt good, honorable,” said Rinzel. “It was so fun. Guys were great. Like ‘Ollie’ said, as a hockey player, you want to win, so that stings. But overall, it was an unbelievable first game.”

First period

Chicago spent most of the first period turning the puck over and were lucky enough to get away with the 0–0 tied game after 20 minutes of action. Moore and Rinzel enjoyed their pregame skates and looked like both were as pumped as ever to be on the ice. Rinzel looked very comfortable with his decision-making skills and trusted his skating ability to get the puck out of his own zone or jump into a play offensively without hurting the team defensive dynamic.

Second period

Nick DeSimone scored his first goal of the season beating Chicago goaltender Arvid Soderblom at the 8:21 mark of the middle frame.

Chicago would answer back with the equalizer at the 11:02 mark when Joe Veleno buried home his seventh goal of the season on a shot past Utah goaltender Karel Vejmalka. Veleno took a nice feed from defenseman Artyom Levshunov to finish off the 3-on-2 rush.

Chicago would take the only lead of the night at the 14:55 mark when forward Ryan Donato scored his 29th goal of the season with an assist from Connor Bedard, his 38th helper on the season.

The Chicago lead would not last long as defenseman Mikhail Sergachev and forward Alexander Kerfoot would beat Soderblom before the end of the period to give Utah the 3–2 lead after two periods of play.

Third period

Kailer Yamamoto scored his first goal of the season at the 10:57 mark before Logan Cooley would send most of the fans to their cars at the 12:54 mark to finish off the overmatched Blackhawks 5–2.

The Blackhawks host the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday for an 8:30 p.m. CDT puck drop. The Wednesday game will be part of the TNT broadcast.

Analysis

Rinzel looked very good in his first NHL game action. He showed the comfort level of a veteran with the puck on his stick in his own zone and used his skating ability to skate the puck out of his own zone and gave himself three nice scoring chances on the other end of the ice. His play could have been confused with a five-year veteran the way he looked compared to other young Blackhawk defensemen.

Moore showed his excellent skating skills and made a few nice plays, driving some offense through the neutral zone and into his offensive zone.

Soderblom’s run as “The Dominator” for that three-game span earlier in the season is all but over. The netminder has trouble finding pucks in traffic and spent most of the game hoping shots went wide. Soderblom also did not get much help from most of his defensemen in front of clearing traffic. Quite the bad combination.

The Chicago Blackhawks took on the Utah Hockey Club at the United Center on the NHL trade deadline day. While the Hawks made two moves on the day, only one move affected the NHL roster. The Hawks moved Craig Smith and Petr Mrazek for Joseph Veleno. Veleno did not join the Hawks in their game against Utah.

With Smith gone, Philipp Kurashev was activated off the injured reserve to take his place. Spencer Knight got his second start in net after joining the Hawks in the Seth Jones trade. In addition to Knight, Ryan Donato remained in the Hawks’ lineup after not being moved at the deadline.

Utah jumped all over the Hawks early. The puck poked into the slot and was blasted home by former Blackhawk forward Nick Schmaltz. Later in the period, Knight robbed Schmaltz of his second goal of the game. Knight saved the other six shots he saw in the first period. After one, Utah led 1–0.

The Hawks finished the second period with a 3–1 lead.

Third period

Early in the third period, John Marino got Utah on the board with his first goal this season. Seven minutes later, Clayton Keller buried the power-play chance to tie the game at 3–3.

The third ended with the game tied.

Overtime

In overtime, Connor Bedard ended his goal drought with the game winner.

Analysis

Since the Knight trade, the Hawks have points in their last four games with three wins and one overtime loss. Knight is 2–0 with a 1.95 goals against average and a .951 save percentage with Chicago. Knight’s addition and the subtraction of Jones, has given the Blackhawks a new feel on the ice. The team appears to be playing looser and with more confidence since Jones’ departure.

With Knight being in the fold, the Hawks felt comfortable dealing Mrazek to the Wings. Mrazek was great last season and struggled a ton this season.

Another positive from tonight victory was the scoring of Bedard. Since the 4 Nations Face-Off, Bedard had been pointless in seven games. With a goal and an assist, Bedard has ended that slump. Bedard might be happy that one of his favorite teammates in Donato remains a Blackhawks. Donato was not traded as many people speculated. Kyle Davidson never got an offer that met their asking price.

The streaking Hawks’ next game is against the Nashville Predators on Saturday at 7 p.m. CST.

The Chicago Blackhawks have sleep-walked through the first two games following the 4 Nations Face-off break as they have been outscored 10–3 by Columbus and Toronto. On Tuesday night, the Hawks took on the Utah Hockey Club at the Delta Center hoping to get back into the win column. Arvid Soderblom got the start for the visitors while Utah started Karel Vejmelka.

First period

Chicago got on the board first on a power play goal by Seth Jones. At the side of the net, Ryan Donato fed Jones at the left point and he skated across the blue line and into the right circle and snapped a wrist shot past Vejmelka for his seventh of the season to give the Hawks a 1–0 lead at 13:34. This was Jones’ first goal since going public with his desire to be traded.

The Hawks would take the one-goal lead into the first intermission.

Second period

With 37.2 left in the middle frame, Clayton Keller scored his 21st of the season to tie the game at 1–1. Utah got some much-needed zone time, and after winning a board battle, the puck found its way in front of the net and Keller shot it in just inside the right post for the goal to tie it after two periods.

Third period

Lawson Crouse broke the tie with his ninth of the season to give Utah its first lead of the game at 2–1. Crouse retrieved the puck behind the Hawks’ net, skated in front and lifted a backhand shot from the left circle past a screened Soderblom at the 12:12 mark. The Hawks were able to generate a few chances in the final minute with their net empty and the extra attacker on but could not get the equalizer as Utah won it 2–1.

Analysis

The Hawks’ lack of offense wasted a strong performance in goal by Soderblom, who kept the game within reach for as long as possible. Utah finished the game outshooting the Hawks 36–22, including 14–6 in the third after Utah tied it late in the second, which was the turning point of the game. On the plus side, the Blackhawks’ penalty kill was a perfect 5 for 5, including three in the first period when the Hawks were clinging to a 1–0 lead. The Blackhawks continue their road trip on Thursday night in Las Vegas against the Vegas Golden Knights. Puck drop is at 9 p.m. CST on CHSN with the radio call on 720 AM WGN.

The Chicago Blackhawks fell down early to the Utah Hockey Club 3–0 and could not get back into the game before falling 5–2 in the inaugural game for Utah in Salt Lake City. Luke Richardson’s lineup looked to be a step slow early, and the Blackhawks could not overcome some missed opportunities that rang off the goal posts early in the second period.

Here was the Blackhawks’ opening night lineup:

First period

Utah scored first when forward Dylan Guenther fired a one-time blast past Chicago goaltender Petr Mrazek to put the home team up 1–0 at the 4:46 mark of the frame. The shot appeared to surprise Mrazek and looked to be one that the netminder would like back.

Utah Captain Clayton Keller would not waste much time putting a puck behind Mrazek when he put a backhand attempt into the net at the 12:25 mark to put Utah up 2–0. A horrible turnover at the blue line by Craig Smith ended up on the stick of Keller, and after a fanned attempt by forward Nick Schmaltz, Keller finished the opportunity.

Second period

Chicago came out in the middle frame and showed a jump in their step they did not possess in the opening frame. A few chances rang off the goal posts early and the visiting team showed nothing on the scoreboard from the chances and it started to look like it was going to be “one of those nights” for the Blackhawks.

That night continued when forward Barrett Hayton tipped in a shot from Mikhail Sergachev at the 8:46 mark of the period.

Teuvo Teravainen scored the Blackhawks’ first goal of the season to shorten the Utah lead to 3–1 when Connor Bedard took a puck around Sergachev at the blue line and found Teravainen for a backhand goal. Sergachev either got caught not wanting to lay the hit on Bedard or was not sure he could play the puck, but Bedard made the defenseman pay for the indecision as the puck ended up behind Utah goaltender Connor Ingram.

Third period

Newly named captain Nick Foligno beat Ingram with a tip-in after winning a faceoff in his own zone—faceoffs do count—and redirected a shot from Alex Vlasic’s point shot past Ingram to pull within a goal at 3–2 at the 4:48 mark of the final period.

That would be all the scoring for the Blackhawks, as Guenther scored an empty-net goal for this second tally of the game. The goal would not be the last, as Lawson Crouse scored his first of the season 20 seconds later to finish off the Blackhawks 5–2.

Analysis

The Blackhawks could not overcome a slow start after falling behind 3–0 but did show some grit to fight back and make the game 3–2 midway through the second frame. After an empty-net goal and another soft goal by Mrazek, the end score of 5–2 looked worse than the game actually played out.

Mrazek was in mid-season form giving up a soft goal early and stopping only 20 of the 24 shots he faced for an .833 save percentage for the night.

Bedard looked good all night with two assists in 21:14 minutes of ice time for the game. His chemistry with Teravainen will be fun to watch early in the season. The hope would be Richardson keeps the two swift forwards together as they try and find a good fit to the puzzle on the other side of Bedard, as Ilya Mikheyev probably will not be the answer.

The Blackhawks return to the ice on Friday for a 7 p.m. CDT puck drop in Manitoba against the Winnipeg Jets.
