The Colorado Eagles are the hottest teams in the AHL right now, riding an eight game win streak. They had an amazing comeback win against their division rival, the Calgary Wranglers, on Friday night. The Eagles allowed four goals in the first period and then came back with five unanswered goals for the win. Injuries are piling up once more with Cal Burke missed his second consecutive game with an upper-body injury. Matthew Stienburg was also out of the lineup for a second game for an unknown reason. Nate Clurman continues to be out with an upper-body injury and has not played since February 9th. Here are the takeaways from the 3–1 loss to the Wranglers.

Takeaways

— The Wranglers made the game a very physical game compared to Friday. Eagles players were taking hits and stumbling off of the ice in droves. Spencer Smallman took a nasty hit early in the first and would head straight to the bench. Cedric Pare was hit late in the first, but later returned in the second to assist on Riley Tufte’s goal.

— Colorado Eagles (@ColoradoEagles) March 3, 2024

— In a game on Friday that only saw two penalties total, Colorado had six penalties alone. Discipline became an issue that players were getting caught for trips, cross-checks and fighting. Calgary was obviously getting to the Eagles, and it showed on the scoresheet with their four power play opportunities. Ivan Ivan received two holding penalties in the corner, both occurring in the first period.

— Colorado needed to simplify the game. When they were odd man rushes, the Eagles were over passing the puck. It led to the plays breaking up and the puck flying off of the stick of the shooter. The Eagles had even less high danger chances because of the over passing, but it would tire out the defense.

Conclusion

The Eagles have only won one game in the Scotiabank Saddledome, so Friday may have been the exception. With the loss, Coachella Valley now has a four point lead in the Pacific Division. They may gain even more ground with a game they play against the San Diego Gulls on Wednesday. Expecting Ivan Prosvetov to continue at the pace that he was (8-0-0, 1.25 GAA and .959 SV%) was unrealistic. Prosvetov had been playing very well, but the first loss had to come, eventually. Colorado will be back at it on Friday in Bakersfield for a two-game series and then home for six games.

The Colorado Eagles are coming in hot, winning a season high seven games in a row. But the battle was hard tonight as they rolled into Calgary against the Wranglers. The Eagles do not have a glorious history with Calgary. They have never won a game in the Scotiabank Saddledome until tonight. The Wranglers hold a 4-0 record this year against the Eagles, winning the last game 5–1. The Eagles would fall behind in the first by four goals, but prevailed with five unanswered goals. Colorado extended their win streak to eight games with the 5–4 comeback victory against Calgary.

Takeaways

— Turnovers killed the Eagles throughout the entire game. Turnovers led to two of Calgary’s goals in the first period and multiple chances throughout the game. Because of the turnovers, the Eagles could not clear the puck out of their own zone and made more work for the goalie.

JONESY! pic.twitter.com/RNBc20GmbT

— Throughout the game, the absence of Cal Burke in the lineup was noticeable to the team. Unfortunately, Burke is out with an upper-body injury after flying into the boards in the last game. The team has classified him as day-to-day for the moment. When he is in the lineup, he is excellent at leading the breakout out of the defensive zone with a pass to the wingers.

— Tanner Kero was a man on a mission tonight scoring his first career AHL four point night. He broke open the scoring for the Eagles with an unassisted shorthanded goal in the second period. He later tipped in Brad Hunt’s pass to put Colorado down by only one goal and then added two assists to the mix.

— Ivan Provestov got off to a poor start, allowing four goals in the first period on 11 shots on goal. On most of the goals, there was not much he could have done, but you could tell it was just not his night. At the intermission, Trent Miner would come into the game and stop all 13 shots he faced. By holding the Eagles in the game, Miner’s performance showcased that he should be offered a new contract at the end of the year.

Conclusion

The Eagles showed grit and determination with tonight’s victory. Or as head coach Aaron Schneekloth would say, “they showed a lot of compete in their game.” For any team to fight back from four goals down, no matter the league, is impressive. Kero is hitting his stride in the season at the right time. He has had eight points in his last five games. With the win, Colorado maintains their position in second place in the Pacific Division with 19 games left. They will face off against the Calgary Wranglers again on Sunday at noon before heading to Bakersfield the following weekend.

LOVELAND, Colo. — Though the Colorado Eagles struggled with aggression and engagement last night, the rematch against the Calgary Wranglers showed adjustments despite dropping the game 5–1.

The most notable difference was the reintroduction of Justus Annunen to the crease. He was out of the lineup after the game against the San Jose Barracuda on Nov. 18. His absence highlighted the need for him to regain confidence between the pipes, but head coach Aaron Schneekloth ultimately took him out of the game halfway through the second period.

First period

Right out of the gate, it was clear the Eagles had a bone to pick. After yesterday’s close loss, it was clear Colorado could find a victory against Calgary.

But the Wranglers would not make a victory easy. Former Avalanche player Dryden Hunt found the back of the net first and gave the visiting team an early lead at the 7:25 mark.

Ben Meyers, assisted by Jack Ahcan, would answer the goal with his own only four minutes later. At the NHL level two weeks ago, Meyers also netted a goal against the Wranglers’ NHL affiliate, the Calgary Flames.

“I think it always helps,” Meyers said. “Obviously the game is faster there, so getting those reps in and then coming back makes it a little easier.”

Second period

The second frame was the beginning of the end for Colorado. Penalties plagued the Eagles and they played like they had a bone to pick with Calgary. They found themselves in the box for nineteen minutes while only committing three infractions.

Brad Hunt got the ball rolling with the penalties only nine seconds into the period for hooking. With only five seconds to go on his penalty, Annunen let a puck past him, and the Wranglers took the lead once and for all.

A minute later, the margin increased to two. The home team received their first opportunity to close the gap after drawing a tripping penalty. But, before even taking advantage, Jason Polin committed a fifteen-minute infraction, resulting in his removal from the game 6:17 into the second period.

With the intensity at an all-time high and several tussles already in the books, Corey Schueneman and Calgary’s Mitch McLain sealed the deal and both receive penalties for roughing at 10:26.

During the 4-on-4, Calgary scored again, and the former Avalanche member picked up his second of three assists for the night.

Two minutes later, the team netted another goal, and Trent Miner replaced Annunen. Trent Miner faced the visiting team last night.

Though receiving two more power play chances, the Eagles didn’t convert on any of them despite being incredibly successful on the road leading up to this series.

Third period

After steadily falling further and further away from a level playing field, the aggression and anger continued to build. Three and a half minutes in, Riley Tufte committed the last penalty of the match for roughing.

The Wranglers scored their last goal of the game 13:40 into the match and Hunt picked up his third and final point of the night.

Takeaways

During the entire weekend, Colorado was always presented with chances to score. Inconsistent power plays and a strong opposing goalie were the toughest hurdles to get past. In the last two periods, the Eagles outshot their opponent by a considerable margin, 15-8 and 11-7, respectively.

The actual killer of the match was the number of penalties committed, especially in the second period. The slew of penalties led to a breakdown of the lineup, and Calgary capitalized on the weaknesses to run away with the game.

While on the road, the Eagles captured a power play goal for the last three games, but the last two games on home ice have not yielded the desired results.

Annunen could be considered responsible for the number of goals against the team, but his prolonged absence from the lineup and limited support from the defense was a huge contributing factor. Miner’s late appearance in the game was promising, but was not early enough to be a difference maker.
