The Chicago Blackhawks took on the Detroit Red Wings in their second game of a back to back. It was their first game without Connor Bedard this season.

To fill Bedard’s spot on the roster, Chicago recalled Nick Lardis from the Rockford IceHogs. Lardis has 26 points in 24 games in the AHL. Ironically, Lardis was recalled on the same day that Frank Nazar was recalled the year prior.

Sadly, Lardis was not enough to get Hawks on the scoresheet as they were shut out 4-0 by John Gibson.

First period

Early in the game, the Wings got on the board with a goal from Alex DeBrincat. It was the former Hawk’s 17th goal of the season.

Shortly after, Patrick Kane scored the 498th goal of his career. The former Hawk is now two goals away from 500 and seven goals behind Joe Mullen on the all-time American-born goals list. He only trails Mike Modano by 10 points for the most points by an American-born player.

The first period ended up 2-0 in favor of the Wings.

Second period

The Wings added another goal from Emmitt Finnie to take a 3-0 lead.

Third period

DeBrincat capped off the scoring with an empty-net goal. The Hawks fell to the Red Wings 4-0.

Analysis

The Blackhawks are now living in a Bedard-less world. As we saw in the 2023-24 season, this is going to be painful. Without Bedard, that team went 3-10-1. That was with Bedard playing at a lesser level. While there has been no timeline for this return, the Blackhawks have ruled him out for the next three games. Those three games will be on the road through Eastern Canada. Without Bedard, players will have to step up their offensive games.

Lardis

Lardis made his NHL debut against the Wings. He was given 15:32 of ice time for the game. Of his 15 minutes, he played 4:52 on the power play. For his night, he recorded two shots on net and five hits. Sadly the outcome was not what he wanted in a solid debut.

Nazar

While Nick Lardis did not look out of place in his NHL debut, the young rookie cannot be expected to make up for Bedard. The other forwards who have been on cold streaks have to start scoring. The biggest culprit is Nazar. Nazar’s last goal was on October 28.The young forward must regain his scoring touch that helped him record five goals in the season’s first 10 games.

In addition to Nazar, several other forwards are struggling on offense. Both Andre Burakovsky and Jason Dickinson have two goals combined in their last 10 games. Ryan Donato has one goal in his last eight games and Illya Mikheyev has not scored since November 5.

The Hawks need someone to contribute on offense besides Tyler Bertuzzi.

Soderblom

Coming into Saturday’s game, Arvid Soderblom had been going through a rough stretch. He needed to have a strong game. Instead, he allowed two first-period goals and never fully recovered.

He has now lost his last four start in a row allowing 9, 4, 7 and 3 goals in those starts. Perhaps it is time for the Blackhawks to give Drew Commesso a look in the NHL. Commesso current has a .913 save percentage and 2.59 goals against average in the AHL.

If not Commesso, perhaps trade candiate Laurent Brossoit should get a spot start soon. Brossoit is trying to make a comeback to the NHL after double hip surgery and knee surgery. Brossoit last played in the NHL in the 2024 playoffs.

The next hurdle for the Blackhawks will be Bedard’s MRI, which is scheduled for Monday. The Hawks’ next game is Tuesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Chicago Blackhawks (8-5-3) beat the Detroit Red Wings (9-7-0) at the Little Caesars Arena on Sunday 5-1 as five different Blackhawks found the back of the net. Connor Bedard had a goal and two assists while goaltender Arvid Soderblom stopped a career-high 45 saves in the winning effort.

First period

Bedard gave Chicago the early 1-0 lead with a nasty wrist shot from the right circle that beat Detroit goaltender John Gibson, who stopped 15 shots in the loss at home. Bedard’s goal, his ninth of the season, was assisted by defenseman Artyom Levshunov and forward Teuvo Teravainen at the 0:59 mark of the opening frame.

Dylan Larkin would make up for his penalty that led to the Bedard goal with a wrist shot past Soderblom at the 4:19 mark of the first period to level the score at 1-1.

Second period

Teravainen would put the Blackhawks on top with his third goal of the season with a snap shot at the 3:22 mark of the second period. Teravainen’s power play goal was assisted by Andre Burakovsky and Tyler Bertuzzi.

Third period

Bertuzzi would fire home Chicago’s third straight power play goal and his ninth of the season a few minutes in with a wrist shot that beat Gibson in deep that gave the Blackhawks a 3-1 lead. Bedard and defenseman Louis Crevier assisted on the goal.

Chicago would score an empty-net goal at the 16:37 mark of the final period when Burakovsky scored his seventh goal of the season. Bedard found Burakovsky at his own blue line and bounced in an empty-netter as Detroit was trying to find some offense down two goals. The goal was assisted by Bedard and Crevier. That assist would temporarily put Bedard atop the NHL’s point scoring list.

After a six-game road trip, Chicago is back on home ice on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. CST against the New Jersey Devils at the United Center.

Analysis

Chicago scored on all three of their power plays and that will always be a recipe for success. The Blackhawks have started to move the puck and keep their skates moving a lot better over the past few games, making them difficult to defend with the man advantage.

Soderblom stopped 45 shots in a career game for the 26-year-old Swedish goaltender. Soderblom and Spencer Knight continue to give Chicago good-to-great goaltending most nights.

Bedard is near the top of the league scoring race with nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points in 16 games this season. The 20-year-old is just scratching the surface when it comes to his talents and that is a very scary thing for opponents.

The Chicago Blackhawks fell to 1–4–1 on home ice and 5–8–1 overall after last night’s 4–1 loss at the hands of the rival Detroit Red Wings. The overall feel in the building was lackluster at best, as most “Detroit sucks” chants were clearly overshadowed by “Let’s go Red Wings” and the product on the ice was not any better for the home team.

Luke Richardson gave the nod to goaltender Petr Mrazek, who made some excellent saves to keep his team in the game, but the 32-year-old Czech’s 21-save effort was not enough.

First period

In what was an evenly boring offensive period for both teams, the goal with 1.5 seconds left in the period by former Blackhawks forward Alex DeBrincat was a sign of what was to come for the mistake-filled defense on the night. Detroit entered the zone on a 2-on-4 as forward Dylan Larkin entered the zone with 5.7 seconds left in the period, found his way into the middle of the ice without ever being touched and after having his initial pass attempt blocked, skated to within 10 feet of Mrazek, got off a shot and DeBrincat was able to hammer home the rebound before the horn would sound for the period.

Second period

The only part of the game fans were able to cheer came at the 8:42 mark of the second period when captain Nick Foligno scored his fifth goal of the season on a back shot that beat 37-year-old goaltender Cam Talbot for his only blemish of the night. Tyler Bertuzzi won a board battle and found a streaking Foligno, who was able to tap home a second chance as Talbot’s skate blade just could not keep the post.

The tie game would not last long, as Detroit took advantage of a tired Blackhawks team on a long shift when Larkin used his world-class speed to easily work around a tired Isaak Phillips and fire a wrist shot past Mrazek for a 2–1 lead at the 12:27 mark of the middle frame. The goal, Larkin’s eighth goal of the season, was assisted by DeBrincat.

The goal was generated by a Bertuzzi turnover just inside his own blue line, a turnover the home team made several times throughout the night instead of getting the puck in deep and working along the boards.

Third period

As fans started to find exits and left the building about 3/4 filled, forward Joseph Veleno tipped home a deflection from a Moritz Seider attempt to give the Red Wings a 3–1 lead at the 3:03 mark of the third period. The goal was Veleno’s first goal of the season after the Blackhawks lost a board battle and found two Blackhawks team members following the puck carelessly before Seider fired a weak attempt on Mrazek that was deflected by Veleno, who was standing all alone in front.

Chicago never threatened late and Andrew Copp scored an empty-net goal that sent the few Chicago fans packing and the Red Wings a 4–1 victory.

Probably the best part for the fans left was a quick “encore” that forward Patrick Kane gave before exiting the ice in his red and white sweater.

Analysis

The aforementioned mistakes were the downfall of the Blackhawks. As shown in the first goal of the night, Chicago does not have the physicality to make many mistakes in their own zone and get away with them. If they are not physical around the net, then their positioning needs to be perfect and that is a crapshoot on most nights. Throw in the fact the offense turns the puck over consistently in the neutral zone and at the blue line and that is a recipe for disaster for a bottom-five hockey team in the league.

Foligno scored his fifth goal of the seaason and continues to be a bright spot for the overmatched Blackhawks.

This was a night that Alex Vlasic needs to flush, as evident by his -4 rating for the night. Even without the overrated stats of plus-minus, Vlasic was terrible. Those nights happen, and the great thing about having one yesterday is there is a game in Dallas tonight. It will be interesting to see the young defenseman’s bounce back, as he has been the best Blackhawks defenseman on many prior nights.

That game tonight can be seen on CHSN and Victory+, as the Dallas Stars host the Chicago Blackhawks with a 7 p.m. CST puck drop in Dallas.

For the Colorado Avalanche, it was hard to add any more chaos for the day. Trading Bowen Byram to the Buffalo Sabres and Ryan Johansen to the Philadelphia Flyers was an event in its own right, but newcomers Casey Mittelstadt (BUF) and Sean Walker (PHI) hadn’t yet made their way into the lineup.

Stepping up to the plate were Jean-Luc Foudy and Ondrej Pavel from the Colorado Eagles. To add to the pressure, it was Colorado’s first matchup against former teammate J.T. Compher on home ice since he signed with the Detroit Red Wings in free agency.

To match the pace of the day, the 7–2 decisive victory over the Red Wings was something unimaginable. Despite securing a win with such a substantial margin, there was still room to work for the home team while celebrating another historic night for the team.

Colorado outshot Detroit 54–29, but most of the success stemmed from the second period. The Avalanche scored three goals and put up a shocking 24 shots on the net, converting on three of them.

The Good

The Avalanche roster came up big in more ways than one. Cale Makar had recently broken an 11-game scoring drought against the Chicago Blackhawks on March 4. Since lighting the lamp, Makar broke open his historic night with an equalizing goal 5:15 into the contest, tying the game at one.

He subsequently scored an additional two back-to-back goals at the end of the second period, marking his first career hat trick—an impressive feat as a defenseman.

Nathan MacKinnon extended his home point streak to 31 games, tallying at least one in every matchup in Ball Arena for the 2023-24 season. MacKinnon collected four points on the night, his most notable also being an equalizing power play goal at the 17-minute mark.

Foudy made his first appearance in an Avalanche sweater after spending the first part of the season injured. Determined to make a splash, he netted his first NHL goal at 15:25 into the third period.

Mikko Rantanen tallied four assists, and Artturi Lehkonen and Jonathan Drouin also netted a goal in the decisive effort.

The Bad

The Avalanche had a serious problem with their penalty kill. Colorado is sitting 11th in the league on their penalty kill execution, but several defensive breakdowns in front of the net left too much room for Detroit to take advantage.

Fabbri nets his 16th. #LGRW pic.twitter.com/w9WX1HLmk5

Both of the Red Wings’ goals took place in front of the net with little to no help from the defense. Alexandar Georgiev did as much as he could, but it proved to be a costly task.

Some of this could be because of the roster shuffle, but without the offensive force of the game, this could have proven to be catastrophic. Georgiev shut down many of Detroit’s offensive pressures, including a clutch glove save.

Georgiev robs Fabbri blind with a great glove stop#GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/SsN5JpPs7z

Takeaways

While the departure of Byram was an emotional moment for many Avalanche fans, the arrival of Mittelstadt and Walker is something to look forward to.

Makar’s impact tonight may have been the momentum the team needed to secure six unanswered goals in their decisive win, a much needed relief to the team’s offensive identity.

After securing tonight’s victory, Colorado and the Jets have tied at 83 points for second place in the Central Division, just two points behind Dallas.

The team is up against the Minnesota Wild on Friday. The Wild currently holds the sixth position in the Central Division and is nine points behind a wild card spot.

Jersey retirement ceremonies and a legendary player returning do not happen often. When both occur on the same night, that is a truly special, and perhaps historic, night. On Sunday night at the United Center, prior to hosting their Original Six brethren, the Detroit Red Wings, the Chicago Blackhawks honored their former face of the franchise and Chicago native Chris Chelios by raising his No. 7 sweater to the rafters.

The ceremony, hosted by the voice of the Blackhawks for 39 years and Hockey Hall of Famer, Pat Foley, featured the return of several of Chelios’ former teammates, including Brian Noonan, Reid Simpson, Keith Carney, Gary Suter, Denis Savard, Tony Amonte, Eddie Belfour and Jeremy Roenick. Also in attendance were two of the greatest ever to play in the NHL, Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, as well as five-time NBA champion, including three straight with the Chicago Bulls, Dennis Rodman.

As for the other major milestone of the night, the Blackhawks welcomed back future Hall of Famer and three-time Stanley Cup winner Patrick Kane to the United Center for the first time since he was dealt to the New York Rangers last spring. On Sunday night, Kane arrived wearing a Red Wings sweater after signing with the team in late November after recovering from off-season hip surgery. Kane entered the game with 11 goals and 26 points in 26 games for Detroit. In net, the Hawks started Petr Mrazek, a former Red Wings draft pick, who faced Detroit’s James Reimer.

First period

Seven minutes into a scoreless game, the Hawks played a video tribute to Kane. With former teammates Patrick Sharp, Marian Hossa, Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook watching from a suite, Kane received a lengthy standing ovation from the sold-out crowd that went so long, he took a second curtain call followed by a third.

With 40.7 seconds left in the first, Robby Fabbri gained the zone and fed Christian Fischer in the slot, who found Daniel Sprong in the right circle and he fired the puck while falling to the ice and past Mrazek to give Detroit a 1–0 lead. Sprong’s 16th of the season would be the lone goal of a fast-paced first period.

Second period

In the second period, MacKenzie Entwistle tied it at 1–1. Kevin Korchinski sent an outlet pass to Reese Johnson, who fired a wrist shot that was stopped by Reimer. Johnson gobbled his own rebound behind the net and tried to bank it off Reimer, but it trickled into the slot and Entwistle fired it in to the open net for his third of the season at 3:29.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The Blackhawks took a 2–1 lead at the 17:52 mark on the power play on Nick Foligno’s 14th of the season. Bedard fired a wrist shot from the top of the right circle and the puck hit Foligno on the way in and went off Reimer and trickled into the net. The Hawks took the one-goal lead into the locker room after 40 minutes.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Third period

With 4:16 left in the third, former Blackhawk winger Alex DeBrincat banked in his 22nd goal of the season to tie the game at 2–2. “The Cat” retrieved the puck on the goal line and fired the puck toward the net and it found its way through between the post and Mrazek’s left leg. Kane also picked up on an assist on DeBrincat’a tally. Sixty minutes were not enough, so the two teams headed to overtime.

In the extra session, in a scene Blackhawks fans have witnessed several times, Kane was sprung loose alone and scored high glove side on Mrazek to win the game for the Red Wings. For Kane, it was his 12th of the season and a fitting way to cap an emotional return to Chicago.

Analysis

Sometimes the story just writes itself. On a night that began with one of the greatest Blackhawks ever having his number retired to the rafters of the United Center, another Hawks legend, and one who will also have his number retired some day, ended the game just like he did so many times during his historic career in the Windy City. The Hawks played a solid defensive game, but a bad late goal given up by Mrazek and then getting caught deep in the offensive zone in overtime cost them the game.

The Blackhawks will be off until Thursday night when they host the Colorado Avalanche at 8 p.m. CST for a nationally televised game on ESPN with the radio call on WGN 720.

One point is better than none for the Colorado Avalanche against the Detroit Red Wings. But it wasn’t the best game outcome at this end of the season. Why didn’t they get two points?

— The power play – tonight the Altitude broadcaster Marc Moser mentioned not once, but twice, “the Avalanche are two of their last 28.” That shows that there is an issue with the power play. The penalty kill was strong, so it’s not a ‘special teams’ issue.

— No rebound luck – the Avalanche picked up very few rebounds. When they did, they had no luck putting the puck in the net.

— Missed Passes – Poor timing of passes resulted in missed goal-scoring chances.

Takeaways

– Justus Annunen in only his fourth game as starting goalie for the Avalanche was strong in net. The one goal that got past him flew through bodies and sticks. It was impossible to track. His biggest save of the game came with .06 seconds left in the third period. Former Avalanche J. T. Compher was trying to push the goal and Annunen denied him.

– After his last game, the coaches elevated Ryan Johansen to 2nd line center tonight. He has won 53.8 percent of his faceoffs so far this season. That contributes to game wins. His game was back to what we had seen early in the season from him, after he joined the Avalanche.

– Jack Johnson has elevated his game recently to assist the team with scoring. Tonight he gained his fourth point in three games. His game is solid defensively, which is a bonus. Mark Rycroft from Altitude TV commented that “he knows his own limits and plays to them.” That contributes to predictability, something the Avalanche have been lacking lately.

– Both Josh Manson and Samuel Girard were again noticeable. Manson and Girard played powerful roles during the penalty kill. They held the Red Wings to scoring on one of four their opportunities. Overall, both players contributed tonight. Girard is now a plus-11 in his last 20 games since returning from his break. That makes a difference. Prior to the break he was -7. And Manson is not only contributed defensively but with scoring opportunities too.

That was the first Red Wings win over the @Avalanche since 2017.

Summary

You will notice the absence of talking about the Avalanche’s top line tonight. Mikko Rantanen had a dreadful night. Cale Makar now has no points in his last six games. Whilst the top line can’t be the only ones to carry the team, as previous game writeups have noted, other teams have worked out how to shut down Nathan MacKinnon. That does impact game outcomes.

Marc Moser summed up the last half of the game when he said “The Red Wings defense has gotten more stingy as this game has gone on.” The Avalanche couldn’t find the way to break through that.

Was this loss terrible for the Avalanche? No. With the minor mistakes cleaned up, they could have come away with two points rather than one. The Avalanche now go back home to meet the Maple Leafs on Saturday.

After a tumultuous few days off the ice, the Chicago Blackhawks returned to playing hockey on Thursday night in the Motor City against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena. For both teams, their newest acquisitions were not in the lineup. Anthony Beauvillier, whom the Blackhawks acquired in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday, is dealing with visa issues, while former Blackhawk and three-time Stanley Cup champion Patrick Kane, who signed with the Red Wings on Tuesday, skated before Thursday’s game and is expected to make his debut next Tuesday in Buffalo. Former Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek started in net for the Hawks against Detroit’s Alex Lyon.

The Blackhawks were awarded an early power play, but the Red Wings struck first. Connor Bedard attempted to swing the puck around the boards, but it was picked off behind the net by Jake Walman, who fed Andrew Copp, who skated in and found JT Compher, who tapped it in for a shorthanded goal. For Compher, it was his fifth of the season at 2:29 of the first.

On that same power play, the Hawks tied it at 1–1 when Lukas Reichel, who was in the slot, fired home a Bedard feed from behind the net. For Reichel, it was his second of the season at 3:20 of the first.

— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) December 1, 2023

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Detroit regained the lead at 8:41 of the first. Walman sprung Robby Fabbri down the left wing boards and he completely undressed Wyatt Kaiser, skated in alone and beat Mrazek for his sixth of the season to give Detroit a 2–1 lead, which would remain the score after 20 minutes.

The Red Wings took a 3–1 lead thanks again to Kaiser’s poor defensive play. A 2-on-1 down low saw Kaiser go down early to block a shot, but ex-Blackhawk Alex DeBrincat skated around him. Mrazek made the initial save, but Kaiser’s block attempt led to him interfering with his own goaltender, and a pinching Ben Chiarot lifted the puck past Mrazek at 5:09 of the second.

Right after Detroit took a two-goal lead, they went on a power play where they would extend the lead to 4–1. Compher tipped in his second of the game and sixth of the season at 5:56. The Red Wings would take a three-goal lead into the dressing room for the second intermission.

The Blackhawks killed off a four-minute power play, however, Detroit maintained the momentum as Fabbri scored his second of the game and seventh of the season. Daniel Sprong’s shot from the slot was stopped by Mrazek, who left a juicy rebound that Fabbri backhanded into the net at 10:54 of the third to give Detroit a 5–1 lead, and that would stand as final.

Analysis

It was not a good night for the visiting Blackhawks, who were thoroughly dominated. The Red Wings controlled the puck most of the game and generated significantly more high-danger chances than the Hawks, who did not help themselves with multiple defensive breakdowns, with Kaiser being responsible for two Detroit goals. Kaiser has largely struggled all season, oftentimes looking overwhelmed against NHL competition. An extended stay in Rockford would serve the young blueliner well.

One element that has been glaring when costing the team is Bedard’s lack of recognition on the power play when there is the potential for a turnover on the opposite side of the ice. As the weak-side shooter, Bedard has the responsibility of providing back-side coverage should the puck leave the zone. Unfortunately, Bedard has been burned multiple times already this season in these instances, with the puck turned over and the opposition racing to an odd-man rush after a slow read from Bedard.

On the plus side, the line of Jason Dickinson between Joey Anderson and MacKenzie Entwistle continued to give the Hawks an aggressive forecheck, which helped generate a few scoring chances.

The Blackhawks hit the road on Saturday for a matinee at 2 p.m. CST against their Central Division rivals, the Winnipeg Jets. The game will be broadcast on NBCSCH and on WGN 720.

As the roster continues to take shape, the Chicago Blackhawks put forth a lineup on Tuesday night against the Detroit Red Wings at the United Center that will likely be close to what fans can expect on opening night next Tuesday. The Hawks entered their fourth preseason contest having lost their last two on the road, including 6–1 in Detroit on Sunday night. This game was also an opportunity for Hawks fans to see a familiar face, center Artem Anisimov, who is attending the Red Wings’ camp on a professional tryout agreement.

The Hawks opened the scoring when Corey Perry poked in a rebound following a Nick Foligno shot from the slot. Both Perry and Jason Dickinson crashed the net and Perry got credited with the goal at 2:09 of the first period.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The Hawks would maintain a 1–0 lead after one. For the Hawks, Petr Mrazek was sharp, as he stopped all 14 shots he faced.

Exactly one minute into the second stanza, Joe Veleno tied it at 1–1. The 2018 first-round pick of Detroit fired a one-timer from the left circle past Seth Jones and into the net off a nice cross-ice feed from Jonatan Berggren.

With 4:30 left in the frame, Connor Murphy broke the tie with a nasty wrist shot from the top of the left circle that went in just under the cross bar on a feed from Connor Bedard. The Hawks regained the lead at 2–1.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Less than a minute later on a delayed penalty, Bedard skated in alone and tried to go five hole following some slick stick-handling, but Michael Hutchinson made the save for Detroit.

At 4:49 of the third, Veleno scored his second of the night off a give-and go-with Klim Kostin to tie the game at 2–2. On the play, Lukas Reichel was caught out of position and trailed Veleno as he shot the puck into the back of the net.

Midway through the third, Perry scored his second of the game on the power play. Taylor Hall found Perry wide open to the right of Hutchinson, took the pass and skated across the crease and fired it into a wide open net to give Chicago a 3–2 advantage. Hall and Bedard each notched their second assist of the game on the power play goal.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

With 1:09 left and the Red Wings’ net empty, Bedard scored his first preseason goal on the power play. Following a Detroit clear, Mrazek fed Bedard at center ice, who skated up the left wing boards and fired the puck into the open cage to give the Hawks a 4–2 lead, which was the final tally.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Analysis

The Blackhawks looked much better on Tuesday than in their previous game in Detroit. After a wide-open first where the Wings outshot the Hawks 14–12, Chicago put the clamps down and held Detroit to just five shots on goal during the final two periods. For the game, the Hawks outshot the Wings, 34–19. In addition to the defensive effort, the Hawks’ power play looked solid, with Bedard drawing two and sometimes three defenders, which created space down low for others including Hall and Perry, who would connect on the eventual game-winning goal.

The Blackhawks play their penultimate preseason contest on Thursday night at the United Center against the Minnesota Wild. Puck drop will be at 7:30 p.m. CDT and will be available on both NBCSCH and on WGN Radio 720.

The Chicago Blackhawks came into their third preseason game swapping lineups back and forth in the first two games, from the veteran-heavy lineup of game one to the young guns lineup in game two. For game three against the Detroit Red Wings, it was a combination of both.

As soon as this game started though, things did not go according to plan for the Blackhawks. After an extended period of being stuck in their own end for the first three minutes of the game, Daniel Sprong put one past the pad of Jaxson Stauber to make it 1–0 Red Wings.

The Blackhawks would get a few shots on goal themselves after that, but the Red Wings showed them that they mean business, putting on a passing clinic before getting the puck in between the circles to Michael Rasmussen, who put Detroit up 2–0.

In the second, it did not get any better for the Blackhawks. The tallest man on the ice, Elmer Soderblom, ripped a shot from right in between the circles to make the score 3–0 Red Wings. Just a couple of minutes later, it was Antti Tuomisto who one-timed the puck from the point past Stauber, making the gap widen to 4–0.

Looking like he set up shop for the night in his office, Rasmussen potted his second of the night on a behind the net feed from J.T. Compher from the same spot as he scored the first time, 5–0 Detroit.

In the third, the Blackhawks finally managed to put one past James Reimer. Louis Crevier wristed one over the blocker of Reimer, cutting the margin to 5–1 Detroit. With a five-minute power play, the Red Wings would convert, with Rasmussen getting the puck to Compher this time, 6–1 Red Wings, which ended up being the final.

Analysis

The Blackhawks did not look good in this game. They allowed the Red Wings to pass the puck wherever they wanted with no repercussions, allowing themselves to get out of position on multiple occasions because they followed the puck instead of keeping track of where their defensive coverage was supposed to be. This game felt too much like last year, which we are hoping to see much less of in the coming season, but I have a feeling there will still be games like this that will happen this coming season.

The Blackhawks are back in action against the Red Wings again, but with Chicago the home team this time. That game will be at 7:30 p.m. CDT on Tuesday night.

The Chicago Blackhawks gave their fanbase a scare on Wednesday night by almost securing their second win in a row, but alas, an old friend, Dominik Kubalik, tallied the game-winning goal for the Detroit Red Wings at 15:53 of the third period, securing a 4–3 win for the home team.

The Hawks started well, as Taylor Raddysh scored the first two goals of the game, the first off a nifty assist from budding prospect Lukas Reichel. Alex Stalock made 12 saves and Chicago took the 2–0 lead into the second period.

The Wings dominated the second period, pumping 19 shots on Stalock and knotting the game at 2–2 off of goals from Jake Walman and Dylan Larkin.

Joey Anderson scored his first goal in a Chicago uniform to open the third period, regaining a 3–2 lead for the Hawks. Lucas Raymond’s deflection tied the game with less than 10 minutes to play and Kubalik’s goal sealed the game for the Wings.

Stalock was once again brilliant for the visitors, making 37 saves on the evening.

The Blackhawks now head south and take on the Florida Panthers on Friday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST.

The Chicago Blackhawks won their home opener at United Center, 4–3 in overtime over the Detroit Red Wings, on Friday night in a wildly entertaining contest.

After their opening night tradition of walking the red carpet, the Blackhawks slept-walked through the first period where they found themselves down 2-0. The Wings received an even strength goal by former Blackhawk Pius Suter and, 67 seconds later, a power play tally from Dylan Larkin.

New Blackhawks forward Andreas Athanasiou cut the Wings’ lead to 2–1 at the 5:41 mark of the second period when he was awarded and succeeded on a penalty shot for his first of the season.

Midway through the second, ex-Blackhawk Dominik Kubalik scored his first Red Wings goal to regain a two-goal lead for the visitors.

Trailing 3–1 entering the third, Alex Stalock replaced Petr Mrazek in the net, who appeared injured late in the second. Philipp Kurashev scored his first of the season nearly four minutes into the frame to cut the Hawks’ deficit to one.

The Hawks tied it at 3–3 on a shorthanded goal by Connor Murphy.

In the extra session, Max Domi forced a neutral zone turnover and then skated in and blew a wrister past Alex Nedeljkovic for his first as a Blackhawk at the 2:44 mark to secure the win.

The Blackhawks welcome the Seattle Kraken for a Sunday afternoon contest at 1 p.m. CDT.

The Chicago Blackhawks looked to finish their three-game road trip on a high note when they played the young and exciting Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday night.

Both teams were looking to get back into the win column, as the Hawks entered the contest having lost four straight, while the Red Wings had dropped their last two. A win for Detroit would be their 19th of the season, which would match their total for the pandemic-shortened 2020–21 season. The Hawks started Marc-Andre Fleury in net against Detroit’s Alex Nedeljkovic.

First period

Led by Fleury, the Hawks survived several early possessions by the Wings, who had the Hawks pinned in their zone. Despite the slow start, the Hawks got on the board first at the 10:24 mark on a 3-on-2 break. Dominik Kubalik fed Philipp Kurashev, who entered the zone and passed to Seth Jones on the right wing, who found a wide open Kubalik on the doorstep for his 10th of the season on a nifty put-back.

The Blackhawks would take a 2–0 lead on a power play goal by Dylan Strome at 12:40 of the opening frame. With former Blackhawk Pius Suter in the penalty box for tripping, Alex DeBrincat found Strome in front, and Strome deflected the puck in for his fifth of the season.

Nearly two minutes later, Strome struck again with his second of the game. Patrick Kane entered the offensive zone and made a no-look turnaround pass to Strome, who sniped one top shelf from the left circle for his sixth to give Chicago a 3–0 advantage.

The Hawks were still not done breaking out of their offensive slump, as with 31.5 seconds remaining, the visitors took a commanding 4–0 lead when Sam Lafferty scored his first in a Blackhawks uniform on a feed from Strome, who had three points in the period. The Hawks outshot the Wings 16–8 in the opening frame.

Second period

Looking to shake things up, Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill pulled Nedeljkovic before the start of the period for Calvin Pickard. The switch certainly sparked the team, as Robby Fabbri intercepted a careless pass by Calvin de Haan in the slot and skated around a Fleury poke check attempt and backhanded the puck into a wide-open net for his 12th of the season to cut the deficit to 4–1 at the 5:45 mark.

Just 56 seconds later, the Wings made it 4–2 when Tyler Bertuzzi scored his 20th of the season. Bertuzzi skated in on the rush and shot the puck from the right circle, which Fleury stopped, but left a juicy rebound that Bertuzzi outhustled both Hawks defensemen for and tapped it in.

With 13 seconds left in the period, Suter cut the Blackhawks lead to 4–3 with a nasty wrist shot from the slot past a screened Fleury for his 10th of the season. For the period, Detroit had a 13–11 advantage in shots on goal, however, the Blackhawks had a 27–21 edge in the category through two.

Third period

The Hawks ended the Wings’ scoring run when Strome completed the hat trick at 6:10 of the period. With the Hawks on the power play, Strome deflected a Jones shot from the point to give Chicago a 5–3 lead on Strome’s seventh of the season and the first hat trick of his NHL career.

While playing 4-on-4, the Hawks regained their three-goal cushion which began with a strong defensive play by Caleb Jones in his own zone when he forced a Bertuzzi turnover. The Hawks went the other way and Jonathan Toews found DeBrincat for his team-leading 25th of the season at 8:55 to give Chicago a 6–3 lead.

The Wings were not done as they cut it to 6–4 with a power play goal when a pair of Calder Trophy candidates connected. Rookie Lucas Raymond found fellow freshman Moritz Seider at the point, who blasted one past “The Flower” for this fourth of the season at 12:05 of the frame.

The Red Wings continued the comeback when Dylan Larkin scored his 20th of the season, unassisted, at 15:25 when he snapped a shot under the crossbar to cut the deficit to 6–5.

Twenty-six seconds later, Brandon Hagel picked off an outlet pass from former Blackhawk Nick Leddy in the offensive zone and wristed it under Pickard’s glove for his 11th of the season to extend Chicago’s lead to 7–5 at 16:13.

With the net empty, “The Cat” picked Larkin’s pocket near the Hawks’ blue line and skated in alone and scored his second of the game and 26th of the season to give the Blackhawks an 8–5 lead with 1:43 left to ice this one and end the Hawks’ losing skid. The Wings outshot the Hawks 12–11 for the period, but the Blackhawks finished with a 38–31 advantage for the game.

The good, the bad, the ugly

The good

Strome: The player Blackhawks fans love to pick on had arguably the best game of his career with a hat trick plus an assist, as he pulled the Hawks out of their offensive slump.

The bad

De Haan: Clearly his days in a Hawks uniform are numbered and he had a lousy game defensively including an awful turnover which led to the Wings’ first goal which sparked their comeback. He also looked overmatched on the penalty kill against the younger and faster Red Wings.

The ugly

The Hawks’ defense: And by defense, I mean everyone on the ice because it is inexcusable to take a 4–0 lead after one, chase their top goaltender, then get sloppy and let a young and inexperienced team back in the game. The Hawks were fortunate to come away with a win in regulation, as there were several occasions where the Hawks saw a multiple-goal lead fizzle to one, which put the Hawks on their heels. But give the Hawks credit for capitalizing on a few costly mistakes by the Wings, which found their way to the back of the net.

Analysis

This was certainly one of the most entertaining Blackhawks games in recent memory. After a slow start, the Hawks broke out offensively in the first, but had to hang on several times as this young and talented Wings team showed why they are a team on the rise. The Blackhawks return home on Friday night to face the Colorado Avalanche at United Center. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. CST on NBCSCH with the radio call on WGN 720.

You can’t win them all: 0–2 last night. Not the way we want to start the week, but we got a big slate of games tonight to win some cash!

Three plays tonight for the Tommy Train passengers. Remember, pick up your food voucher at the station and $1 Busch lights on the drink cart tonight.

(Odds courtesy of BetRivers)

Nashville Predators -125 @ Detroit Red Wings

O/U: 5.5 +110

My pick: Red Wings ML +108. We got a matchup of old conference foes in Detriot tonight. I really like the Detroit Red Wings as home underdogs here. They are 9–2 in their own barn and four of their five wins on the win streak have come at home. This pick holds great value. No need to overthink. Ride the Wings.

Columbus Blue Jackets @ Toronto Maple Leafs -250

O/U: 6 +100

My pick: Maple Leafs three-way -157. Road games have not been good to the Columbus Blue Jackets in recent weeks, losing four straight and being outscored 18–6. Elvis Merzlikins gets the start between the pipes and his road goals against average is 4.32. The Toronto Maples Leafs should have no problem taking care of business tonight at home.

Minnesota Wild @ Edmonton Oilers -122

O/U: 6.5 -134

My pick: Over 6.5 -134. Two teams here who can flat out score. The Minnesota Wild ride a six-game win streak into Edmonton tonight, so their ML at +106 is something I would consider as well.

Make sure to follow me on Twitter, @ThomasGibbons_3, for my bonus play at 5 p.m. CST.

Happy gambling, and remember, always ride the Tommy Train.

The Seattle Kraken took a short jaunt across Lake Erie from New York to Michigan to face the Detroit Red Wings, who have been playing surprisingly good hockey. The Wings were sitting in the fourth spot of the Atlantic Division and had won three straight entering Wednesday night. Seattle was playing solid hockey as well, winners of four of its last five contests.

Seattle was without quite a few players, as the injury hammer hit them hard Wednesday morning. Kraken captain Mark Giordano remained in COVID-19 protocol, while goalie Chris Driedger and Calle Jarnkrok were put on the injured reserve list. The Kraken’s leading goal scorer, Jordan Eberle, as well as forward Jaden Schwartz and defenseman William Borgen were listed as injured and scratched.

The first period was a rather timid one. Both teams felt each other out with little action. Detroit looked to have taken the lead on a Lucas Raymond goal, but the play was reviewed and deemed offside. The Kraken held a slim 7–6 lead in shots while German-born starting goaltenders Thomas Greiss and Philipp Grubauer held the game scoreless. The fun was just around the corner, though.

The goals started just under five minutes into the second period, as Robby Fabbri broke the deadlock on the power play with his fifth goal of the season. Detroit held the slim 1–0 lead for six minutes when Kraken defenseman Vince Dunn scored a power play goal of his own.

Seattle took a brief 2–1 lead on Ryan Donato’s fourth goal of the season off a brutal Detroit turnover late in the second, but the Wings answered two minutes later on a Vladislav Namestnikov goal. This resulted in a 2–2 deadlock heading into a tense third period. Shots in second were 13–9 in favor of the Red Wings in the second, but Grubauer helped keep his team as close as possible.

The third period was a great example of tight, fun hockey, as both teams fought to take the lead. Raymond scored a seeing-eye goal that counted this time at the 6:30 mark to give the home team a 3–2 lead, which held for eight minutes. That was when Donato scored his second of the game and fifth of the season to knot the score at 3–3. As a result, the teams treated the Little Caesars Arena fans to some free extra hockey.

— Alison (@AlisonL) December 2, 2021

Overtime was not the usual run-and-gun that fans are used to and only yielded one Seattle shot on net. On to the first shootout in Seattle Kraken history, where Greiss stopped two of the three attempts he faced, only giving up a dribbler to Joonas Donskoi, to secure the extra standings point for Detroit.

Given the absence of significant offense in the lineup, Head Coach Dave Hakstol should have been fairly happy with a point after a long road trip against some tough competition.

Anchor points

The power play seems to be running smoothly, and Dunn looks to be heating up a bit. As long as the Kraken can continue to convert on at least one per game, they will have themselves in a good position to win every night.

Not to rain on Grubauer’s parade but he still seems to be giving up loose chances on these weird shots that do not always end up in the net. His defensemen are there to bail him out much of the time, but he needs to tighten up his initial saves and keep them in front of him rather than trickling in behind him.

Riley Sheahan (Corsi 25%), Donskoi (Corsi 37.5%) and Dunn (Corsi 39.3%) had rough nights as far as 5-on-5 possession goes. The oddest stat of the night is that Detroit was credited with seven giveaways while the Kraken had none.

As has been the norm this season, the Kraken held the possession advantage, but still managed to lose the game. This team has been a bit of an anomaly.

This season has become a recurring nightmare for Chicago Blackhawks fans. The team has been rolling out the same formula night in and night out. The keys to the formula are get outplayed 5-on-5, commit costly defensive turnovers and never take a lead. This formula has added another loss to the Blackhawks’ record, which is now 0–5–1.

In addition to losing their fifth game of the season, the Blackhawks saw a streak end and extended another. During the game, Blackhawks CEO Danny Wirtz announced that the Blackhawks’ home sell-out streak ended at 535 games with a paid attendance of 19,042. In addition to losing their sell-out streak, the franchise also set another record tonight. The Blackhawks have officially gone the longest time without a lead to start a season in NHL history. They surpassed the 2000–01 Washington Capitals for this dubious record.

First period

In the first period, defenseman Calvin de Haan committed a costly turnover deep in his own end. De Haan tried clearing the puck up the boards to his defensive partner and instead gifted a puck to the Red Wings’ Tyler Bertuzzi. Bertuzzi found 19-year-old Calder Trophy candidate Lucas Raymond for the goal.

The Blackhawks answered the Raymond goal with a goal of their own. Newly acquired Tyler Johnson received a pass from Jonathan Toews in the neutral zone. Johnson lowered his head and drove to the net to stuff the goal home five-hole on Alex Nedeljkovic.

Later in the period, Blackhawks defenseman Erik Gustafsson was caught out of position after an ill-advised pinch in the offensive zone. The Gustafsson gaffe lead to a 3-on-1 chance for Red Wings. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped the first chance from Mitchell Stephens but was not able to stop the rebound attempt from Vladislav Namestnikov. The Red Wings regained the lead and never relinquished it.

In a comedy of errors, the Blackhawks’ Reese Johnson kicked the puck into his own net on back check attempt. After a lengthy review, the goal counted and Bertuzzi was given credit for the tally.

Second period

In the second period, Dylan Strome drew a two-minute penalty after he was cross-checked in the back by the Red Wings’ Marc Staal. On the power play, Toews fed a pass to Seth Jones, who then found Dominik Kubalik, who blasted a shot past Nedeljkovic to cut the lead in half.

In the final minute of the second period, Dylan Larkin of the Red Wings pressed the attack and had his shot hit the outside of the net, but luckily for Detroit, Raymond was able to corral the rebound and stuff it home for the fifth Red Wings goal of the game.

Third period

In the third period, the Blackhawks came out with a sense of aggression and desperation in their game. Sadly, the Blackhawks’ new intensity did nothing to change the outcome of the game. Strome fired a shot from the point, which deflected off a Red Wings defenseman into the reach of Henrik Borgstrom. Borgstrom tapped the puck in to give the Blackhawks their third goal of the game and cut the lead back to two goals for Detroit.

With under seven minutes remaining in the contest, following a four-minute minor on Strome for high sticking, Raymond capped off his night with his third goal of the game for his first career NHL hat trick.

When the final horn sounded, the Blackhawks fell to the Red Wings 6–3 and were yet again booed off their own ice.

Analysis

Whether the front office wants to realize this or not, the Blackhawks are in a desperate need of a change of leadership on the ice. In addition to being booed off their own ice at the end of the game, there were also audible chants of “Fire Colliton” in the building during the game.

There’s a “Fire Colliton” chant in the United Center now.

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 25, 2021

The @NHLBlackhawks need major changes now. This is pathetic.

— Bucci Mane (@Buccigross) October 25, 2021

After an offseason filled with excitement and player additions, this team looks exactly the same as it has for the last four seasons under Colliton. After taking over for Joel Quennevile, the Blackhawks did not win a game for eight starts. The current winless streak is at six games and counting.

When will this one end?

Welcome back to Tommy’s Puckline picks! 2–0 on Monday and 5–0 in my last five plays. The #TommyTrain is full steam ahead and new passengers are always welcome. Hop onboard to get some money in your pocket for the weekend!

First off, here is a resource that I check daily when making my picks.

There are a lot of good games in the NHL tonight. I have three plays for the Tommy Train passengers, so here we go.

(Odds courtesy of BetRivers)

Colorado Avalanche (-124) vs. Washington Capitals (+108)

O/U: 6 -120

My pick: Capitals ML. While Nathan MacKinnon tested negative and will play tonight in the nation’s capital, I still like the Washington Capitals tonight. One thing to note: The Colorado Avalanche have had their share of penalties of late, 21 minutes through two games. The Capitals’ power play was third in the NHL last season and is already off to a hot start this season. If the Avs cannot stay out of the box, the Capitals will take advantage. Another home dog opportunity, so let’s jump on it.

Dallas Stars (+110) vs. Pittsburgh Penguins (-129)

O/U: 5.5 -107

My pick: Dallas ML. The Dallas Stars have played in three close games to open this season, but a 1–2–0 record to show for it. The Pittsburgh Penguins are 2–0–1 without some of their best players. But, I have a feeling the Stars pull out a win tonight. Their scrappy play will lead to scoring chances. I like Braden Holtby in the net tonight. I could see this game being decided in the final minutes. Ride the Stars and do not look back.

Columbus Blue Jackets (+104) vs. Detroit Red Wings (-121)

O/U: 5.5 +100

My pick: Over 5.5. I like both of these teams’ offenses so far this year, both averaging more than four goals per game. I think Vegas giving us plus odds is a gift here. Who does not like high-flying offense! If you want more action on this one, both teams to score a goal in the first period is +195 on BetRivers.

Happy gambling and remember, always ride the Tommy Train.

The Chicago Blackhawks were riding high entering Little Caesar’s Arena in Detroit on Friday night after four straight wins. The game was a bit of homecoming of sorts for Alex DeBrincat, who grew up just north of Detroit in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

The Blackhawks were very shorthanded on the backend for Friday’s game. After news surfaced that Lucas Carlsson had entered concussion protocol after taking a puck to the head in Thursday’s game, Dennis Gilbert was recalled from Rockford. Initially, it seems like Gilbert was merely an insurance policy, as Nick Seeler was slotted to join the lineup instead of Gilbert. However, just before puck drop, it was announced that Adam Boqvist would not play due to a wrist injury, so Gilbert indeed drew into the lineup in place of the young Swede.

Another interesting note ahead of Friday’s game was Corey Crawford getting the start again in net. It is rare for a goalie to play both games of a back-to-back, but Chicago head coach Jeremy Colliton went with the veteran netminder over giving newly acquired Malcolm Subban a chance in net against the league’s worst team.

The first period began well for the Blackhawks, especially for hometown boy DeBrincat. Just over a minute into the game, DeBrincat and Drake Caggiula had a two-on-one opportunity and DeBrincat, who was ultimately the trigger man, was robbed by Red Wings goaltender Jonathan Bernier.

The first period would not yield much else for either side and both teams went into the dressing room with no scoring in the first.

Just 20 seconds into the middle frame, the home team struck. After the puck was being played on the left-wing boards, Dylan Larkin found the puck and dished it from the boards to Tyler Bertuzzi, who was sitting just off to Crawford’s opposite side in the slot. Bertuzzi wasted no time and fired the puck past Crawford for his 19th of the season and a 1–0 Red Wings advantage.

The Hawks had two two-on-one opportunities following the Detroit goal, however neither worked out after a bit of a missed pass from Brandon Saad to Jonathan Toews and a quality save on Dylan Strome by Bernier.

Around the midway point of the second period, the Red Wings found themselves on the power play. Just after the 10-minute mark, there was a huge board battle in the left wing corner of the ice, occupying most of the Blackhawks’ penalty killers. After the puck was freed by Frans Nielsen, Gustav Lindstrom found Robby Fabbri and, with the puck on a silver platter, Fabbri found the back of the net on the one-timer to give the Red Wings a 2–0 lead.

Robby Fabbri.

Both goals were excellent one-time chances for the home club. It is safe to say Corey Crawford did not stand much of a chance on either play. However, on the second goal, Fabbri’s shot actually deflected off of Gilbert, who dove in front of the shot to block it. Gilbert’s attempt changed the angle of the shot on Crawford and made the shot increasingly more difficult to stop.

The Blackhawks almost beat Bernier with around eight minutes remaining, as Kirby Dach thought he put the puck behind the Red Wings goaltender on a DeBrincat shot rebound. However, the puck clanked the post and danced along the line, but never crossed, and play continued.

It took the remainder of the period and a bit of line blending before the Hawks could beat Bernier. With just over a minute left in the period, Colliton threw Toews and Saad out with Patrick Kane to get something going. On their rush up the ice, Saad initially found Toews, but he lost the puck and it dribbled behind Detroit’s net. Toews regained possession and found Saad in front of Bernier. Without missing a beat, Saad quickly moved the puck to Kane, who was backdoor, and he potted his 31st goal of the season to cut the Wings’ lead in half at 2–1.

However, despite some good chances in the third period, the Blackhawks could not crack Bernier the rest of the way and saw their winning streak come to a screeching halt, as the Blackhawks dropped Friday’s contest 2–1 in Detroit.

Along the Boards

It is sad when the worst team in the league handles you as if it is nothing. Yes, the Blackhawks had some quality chances throughout the game, such as DeBrincat’s two-on-one snipe, Dach’s rebound chance and Kane’s goal, but this team never sustained any meaningful pressure on the Red Wings for much of the game. It is tough to beat a team on a back-to-back, but this Blackhawks team had a lot of success in the second half of back-to-backs this season.

Now, a big reason for that success was the goaltending duo of Crawford and recently traded Robin Lehner. Lehner started the first half of most back-to-backs and a healthy, strong Crawford cleaned up the second half. It was a sensational combination. However, fast forward to now, Lehner is gone, Malcolm Subban is now the Blackhawks’ backup goalie to Crawford, and this coaching staff refuses to play the new netminder.

Subban may have struggled this season in his time with Vegas, but you would think the young goalie would get a chance against the league’s worst team, right? Wrong. Subban once again watched from the visitor’s bench in Detroit, as Crawford took his second game in two days after helping the Blackhawks defeat the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night at the United Center.

It is also worth mentioning that Boqvist’s wrist injury really hurt the Blackhawks defensively, as did Carlsson’s injury. The two young defensemen were playing very well, and Boqvist was finding his touch as the offensive playmaker fans hoped he would become when the Hawks drafted him eighth overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. Due to the injuries, enter Seeler and Gilbert, who both played an average game at best. Gilbert turned the puck over quite a bit and there were a few chances where Crawford bailed out his young defenseman.

It would be easy to blame Friday’s loss on the lack of defensive depth, but it really seemed that this team just looked tired. Fortunately for the Hawks, Friday’s game was only one of four road contests in the entire month of March. The Blackhawks get plenty of home cooking in March, restarting that trend on Sunday night when they welcome the Western Conference leading St. Louis Blues to town.

The Blackhawks are still mathematically in the playoff picture. However, I am going to be the pin that pricks the balloon. This team is not making the playoffs. They do not have enough depth right now to make a meaningful push. If Lehner was still in Chicago, Calvin de Haan and Brent Seabrook were healthy and the Hawks were at full strength coming down the stretch, I’d say there is a chance. However, Lehner is now in Las Vegas, de Haan and Seabrook are done for the year, along with Andrew Shaw and Zack Smith, and this team looks tired because of that lack of depth. They may hang in there down the stretch, but they will likely be picking in the top 10 of June’s draft if the standings stay the way they are. Now, this could be a good thing if the Hawks add another piece such as Boqvist or Dach, who were both top-10 picks over the last two years, but that will be up to Stan Bowman, or whoever the general manager is come June, to make a very meaningful decision for this team’s future.

News

Just before the submission of this recap, the Blackhawks reassigned Gilbert back to the Rockford IceHogs. This may indicate that Boqvist is healthy and will play Sunday since it was confirmed that Carlsson has a concussion.

The once storied rivalry between Chicago and Detroit has fallen to the levels of not even being a must watch game anymore. Fans will always chant “Detroit Sucks” but one can only reminisce about the games of yesteryear.

If Patrick Kane is good then Chicago has a chance to win on most nights. Chicago dressed 17 skaters that do not combine for Kane’s 991 career points.

https://twitter.com/jcgreenx/status/1213848881512845312

Kane’s 53 points tonight is also 23 more than Jonathan Toews this season. Rookie forward Dominik Kubalik has scored 11 goals, falling short of Kane’s 24 goals. The one man show continued tonight.

Chicago’s last place penalty kill looked exactly like it should when forward Filip Zadina beat Corey Crawford to give the away team an early lead. Crawford looked to lose his post, giving the 20-year-old Czech sniper just enough room to bury his chance. Zadina’s shot is wicked and Chicago fans were able to see for themselves.

Detroit forward Luke Glendening scored to give the Red Wings a two goal lead before the first intermission. The 30-year-old forward found himself in front of the net and tipped home a defenseman Patrik Nemeth shot. Glendening made the play while being knocked to the ice by Duncan Keith. Chicago fans may not have known this but going to the front of the net is legal in the National Hockey League.

Kane and rookie Kirby Dach generated some scoring opportunities, mostly from nice individual plays for both, but Chicago could not find the back of the net until Dylan Strome buried a shot with just under five minutes to play in the second period. The good news about playing Detroit this season is you can sleepwalk for two period and still be in the game. The goal gave Strome 10 on the season.

Dylan Sikura scored his first NHL goal, tying the game only 25 seconds after Strome’s marker. And just like that Chicago gained some momentum going into the third period of play.

Dylan Sikura (@Dsikky11) scores his first NHL to tie things up in Chicago!

And just like that it's 2-2 with 3:48 remaining in Period 2! #NHLFirsts #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/vw3Plckcl4

In between periods, Mike Milbury fed the natives the “anything can happen” when talking about Chicago making the playoffs. Milbury stated it all depends on the general manager getting the team a defenseman to help. One can only hope Stan Bowman would not mortgage any future assets as Chicago chases the ninth seed in the Western Conference. Chicago had a 16.6% chance of making the extra season coming into tonight’s contest.

https://twitter.com/FromTheFaceoff/status/1209257360675557376

Right on cue, Chicago’s youngest defenseman Adam Boqvist gave the home team the lead midway through the third period. The offensively gifted Boqvist fired a wrist shot by Howard after leaving Detroit’s forward Darren Helm in his dust after a nice play at the blue line. The Falun, Sweden native now has two goals this season.

Adam Boqvist’s second career NHL goal and first since Nov. 3. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/UDtCCSSX0j

Chicago managed a win with Kane only registering one assist in a 4–2 victory but here is a telling stat that probably says more about Detroit than it does Chicago.

The Blackhawks are allowing a league-worst 36.3 shots per game this season (an obscene number). Detroit has 16 with 7:30 to go in the third period.

With the victory, Chicago stands four points behind the Winnipeg Jets for the final playoff spot. Do fans lean toward the 16.6% chance of making the playoffs and have a major problem along the blue line or toward the “anything can happen” narrative that the St. Louis Blues made possible after last season? Make sure to comment below with your thoughts.
