As the Chicago Blackhawks celebrated their longtime play-by-play broadcaster Pat Foley with a plethora of tributes and stories from former Blackhawks and personalities all around the hockey world and more, two teams took the ice that were playing for nothing but pride. However, Foley gave the crowd an excellent speech like we have come to expect.

Pat Foley addressing the United Center crowd:

"If I leave you, it doesn't mean I love you any less." pic.twitter.com/nHowyUb166

— Blackhawks Talk (@NBCSBlackhawks) April 15, 2022

Early on in the contest, Patrick Kane beat San Jose Sharks goaltender James Reimer with goal No. 24 on the season. Kane made an excellent defensive play at his own blue line, stopping a shot attempt by Sharks defenseman Brent Burns, which lead to a 3-on-1 with Kane taking a pass from Dylan Strome to take a 1–0 lead before fans were even in their seats.

San Jose forward Timo Meier would beat Kevin Lankinen to tie the score at 1–1 at the 4:45 mark of the first period.

Both teams would find some offensive push, but both goalies stood tall, at least in the first period, as the score was all square after one period of action.

Recently acquired Taylor Raddysh netted his ninth goal of the season, on the power play, when Kane made a great cross-ice pass to defenseman Seth Jones, who found Raddysh on the doorstep for an easy redirect goal and a 2–1 Chicago lead.

San Jose would tie the game at 2–2 when forward Scott Reedy beat Lankinen after a harmless shot from Burns deflected to a wide-open Reedy for his third goal this season.

Chicago responded a few minutes later when Calvin de Haan buried his fourth goal when Kane made a “sweet dish,” as Foley belted, for another easy tip-in goal for Chicago to put the Hawks ahead 3–2. The assist gave Kane a point on all three goals.

Calvin de Haan scores his fourth goal of the season and Patrick Kane earns his third point of the night. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/pusS1zaU7d

As the horn sounded on the second period, Chicago led 3–2 in about as an evenly matched contest one would expect from two teams looking to the summer.

Early in the third period, Foley gave an accurate description that “the Globetrotters have just shown up” as a perfect tic-tact-toe passing play ended up in the back of the Sharks’ net for Dylan Strome’s 21st goal of the season.

The Blackhawks’ 4–2 lead would be cut back to one when Lankinen was left sprawling all over the crease and allowed left winger Rudolfs Balcers to score his ninth goal of the season. Lankinen has definitely had a difficult season behind a wonky defense, but has done nothing but give the organization doubt about his future between the pipes.

Rudolfs Balcers responds for San Jose with the rebound tally in tight! Sharks back within 1!#SJSharks pic.twitter.com/cT4NSg5hw4

— Hockey Daily 365 l NHL Highlights & News (@HockeyDaily365) April 15, 2022

Lankinen found himself flopping around again in his crease after making two stops on his back, but could not find the answer for the Jaycob Megna attempt, which tied the game at 4–4. A silver lining for fans: We get more time with the great Pat Foley as both teams were off to overtime.

Fans got their money’s worth with Kane and Alex DeBrincat working most of the overtime together, ending on an excellent rush by DeBrincat beating Erik Karlsson 1-on-1, but DeBrincat got in too deep and could not elevate a shot past Reimer. Through five extra minutes of Foley, the game remained tied 4–4.

“Lankinen! Hawks win! Hawks win!” shouted Foley as Lankinen made his third and final save in the shootout after DeBrincat scored to ultimately give the Blackhawks the 5–4 victory in a shootout.

Analysis

Pat Foley will go down as the greatest voice in Chicago sports history and will be missed by fans. Foley mentioned several times during the broadcast that he was the “luckiest man in the building” when us Blackhawks fans were truly the “luckiest fans.” Cheers, Pat! You will truly be missed.

Tonight’s contest against the San Jose Sharks seemed pointless on the ice, as two non-playoff teams finish out their 82-game schedules, but a generation of Chicago Blackhawks fans were saying “good bye” to a Hall of Fame broadcaster that truly is the “Voice of the Blackhawks.”

Pat Foley, a Glenview, Illinois, native, took over as the Blackhawks play-by-play announcer in 1980 and has spent the good portion of the past 39 seasons (yes, we all know that he was forced out for two seasons) giving Chicago fans something to cheer for, when he belted “Hawks Win! Hawks Win!” all the way to “Bannerman!” and even when the Blackhawks came out on the short end of the score with a “I hope you enjoyed the broadcast in spite of the outcome.” Foley truly is synonymous with the Madhouse on Madison.

Never one to hold back his thoughts, Foley could paint a picture on the radio and articulate a story on the television better than any play-by-play master. The legend was not afraid to stick it to a player that was not quite living up to his end on the ice, but was always quick to praise a player that deserved the spotlight.

As the organization has seen its highest of the highs and lowest of the lows over the past four decades, Foley’s voice was the one constant that fans could get lost for a few hours a night into something that was bigger than themselves.

As the Blackhawks wind down another season without action after the regular season, it was an absolute honor to listen to Foley for close to four decades as the voice of the Blackhawks. As a youngster, many were listening to him on their transistor radios (go ahead, look up what it is) while listening to the Chicago Stadium crowd erupt when the organist drowned out Foley describing the Blackhawks’ goal. All the way to present day, as we say good bye watching on our iPads and Smart TV, to crowds that are reminiscent to the early–mid-2000s when Foley was ousted by the Wirtz family.

Foley gave us chills when shouting our favorite player’s name. He is the reason we remember the run to the Cup in 1991 and also remember the fledgling years of the ABC line. He is also the reason we can get romantic about Marian Hossa and he is also the reason we can cheer about the three Stanley Cups. He is also the reason we look forward to the moments of him and Dale Tallon chuckling about travel and Eddie Olczyk talking about his love for ice cream during the rebuild.

There was nothing better than seeing Mr. Foley up on stage after the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup runs, celebrating with his hometown team. Fans all across the country could see the excitement on his face and how proud he doing broadcasts of three of the greatest teams in Chicago sports history. The great city of Chicago loves their announcers, and Foley is definitely on the “Mount Rushmore” of play-by-play announcers of the Windy City, if not the greatest ever.

So, whether your favorite moments run all the way back to “Larmer!” or maybe “Chris Chelios in overtime!” or even more recent “Crawford! Call the cops!”, take some time to reminisce about your favorite Pat Foley moments and thank a friend or family member that brought the legend into your life through the great game of hockey. The list of memories is truly endless as we hope for a few more “Kaners!” this season.

As we move forward as a fan base, we know no one will be able to replace him, but we need to hold onto the memories we have shared while listening to him. We do not hear it as much as we have in the past, but fans will always remember the great Pat Foley shouting “Hawks Win! Hawks Win!” every time this team brings us out of our seats in the future, even if he is on the golf course enjoying retirement.

Thank you, Pat! It was a hell of a run.
