• The Blackhawks were a step slow to start the game, trailing 2–0 early and having been outshot 16–1 with eight minutes left in the first period. Chicago’s two goals before the end of the second period were registered to Jarred Tinordi and Filip Roos; both goals were the defenseman’s first goal of the season.
• Max Domi and Patrick Kane each had two assists. Both forwards were rewarded, and outside of Jonathan Toews, have been the two most effective forwards so far this yearly season at generating chances.
• Arvid Soderblom continued his excellent start to the season with a 38-save performance. Anaheim’s Troy Terry scored 19 seconds into the game, but Soderblom settled back in and kept his team in the game. Keep an eye on Kyle Davidson jumping at the chance to send down Soderblom as soon as he can to stop the Arvid bus that is ruining his plans for a high pick in the draft.
• The “most unlikely hero award” goes to Tinordi, as he scored his second goal of the game with just under four minutes left in the third period. At the time, Chicago was being outshot 40–22 but had found the back of the net three straight times. Tinordi doubled his career goal output in the game, as he entered the contest with two career goals in 122 games played.

The Blackhawks are back in action on home ice on Monday, as the Carolina Hurricanes drop the puck at 7:30 p.m. CST.

• The Blackhawks’ lone goal was of the power play variety by Taylor Raddysh. It is nice to see what can happen when you move the puck. It makes you wonder what their power play could have been in past years if they were not so stuck on the slow methodical method for so long.
• Goaltender Petr Mrazek made his return from injured reserve and gave the Blackhawks a chance to steal a road win. Mrazek made 33 saves, including 12 stops in the third period.
• Chicago absolutely clowned the Kings at the face-off dot. They won 68% in all situations, with Jonathan Toews winning a cartoonish 86%. Toews also led the Blackhawks with six shots on net. If Toews keeps playing like this, Kyle Davidson might actually get something of value for him at the trade deadline.
• Former Blackhawks prospect Phillip Danault bit his former team with a game-tying goal early in the second period. Kings forward Kevin Fiala scored the game-winner with 1.4 seconds remaining in overtime.
• The Blackhawks’ 27th-ranked penalty kill held the Kings scoreless while their 12th-ranked power play scored that aforementioned first-period goal.
• Luke Richardson’s team is continuing its blue-collar physical style, and it has been shockingly successful.

The Blackhawks stay in California to face the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday evening. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 p.m. CST.

• The Jets got goals from Josh Morrissey, Adam Lowry, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Nate Schmidt.
• Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck recorded his 30th career shutout and his second of this season.
• The Blackhawks have lost four out of their last five games and are 5–5–2 on the young season.
• Arvid Soderblom saved 21 of 24 shots in two periods before being pulled from the game. The trainer said that he was not feeling well and no further update has been given.
• Goalie Dylan Wells made his NHL debut in the third period, making 12 of 13 saves. Wells, a 2016 fifth-round pick of the Edmonton Oilers, was signed on Nov. 2 on a two-way contract. He was the organization’s fifth string goalie entering the season.
• Blackhawks goalie Petr Mrazek is hoping to be back this week. He suffered a groin injury on Oct. 21 against the Detroit Red Wings.

The Blackhawks’ next game is Thursday against the Los Angeles Kings at 9:30 p.m. CST.

— The game started off even, and with little action, with only a few actual shots on goal from both teams. Jonathan Quick and Arvid Soderblom each made a few good saves to keep the game scoreless.

— More than halfway through the game, at the 12:54 mark of the second, Jason Dickinson opened the scoring, tipping in a Caleb Jones wrister from the point to put the Blackhawks up 1–0.

— It did not take long for the second goal of the game to go up on the board, with the Kings coming back less than three and a half minutes later, with Sean Walker springing Arthur Kaliyev, who beat the Blackhawks’ defense to get the puck to Blake Lizotte, who put the puck past a sprawling Soderblom, knotting things up at 1–1.

— The third period went by without incident, with the Hawks killing off the one penalty they took, and both goaltenders stopping everything that came their way. The Blackhawks’ best chance came off of a Filip Roos shot that rang off the post.

— In the overtime period, with 1:31 gone in the frame, Jake McCabe kept the puck in the offensive zone off a Los Angeles miscue and found Jonathan Toews in front of the net, who put the puck past Quick for his seventh goal of the season, giving the Blackhawks the overtime victory.

— The Hawks showed their usual brand of physicality that they have shown throughout this season thus far. They out-hit the Kings and put their bodies on the line to keep shots out of the net as well, which was good to see, putting up 23 blocks along the way.

— Improvements that could be made: The Blackhawks need to do a better job limiting giveaways, as well as winning face-offs. With guys like Toews on your team, winning only 40% of your draws is not a good look.

The Hawks will look to keep the good times rolling on Saturday afternoon in Manitoba as they take on the Winnipeg Jets. That game will be at 2 p.m. CDT on NBC Sports Chicago.

— The game got off to the rough start for the home team nearly three minutes in when Islanders forward Casey Cizikas plowed into Hawks goaltender Alex Stalock after a save just outside his crease. Stalock was down, and after a review, Cizikas was given a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct. Stalock left the game and would not return. The Hawks came up empty during the five-minute power play.

— Anders Lee opened the scoring late in the first period on the power play, as he poked in a rebound for his fifth of the young season to give the Isles a 1–0 lead after one.

— After a scoreless second period, the Islanders doubled their lead to 2–0 on a nasty wrist shot from the left circle by Brock Nelson for his fourth of the season at the 7:23 mark of the third.

— At 10:19 of the third, Jonathan Toews cut the deficit to 2–1 when he deflected his sixth of the season on the power play.

— Zach Parise put this one away with an empty-net tally for his fourth of the season with 13.1 seconds remaining to give the Islanders a 3–1 lead.

— Off the ice, the Blackhawks made noticeable efforts to recognize the beginning of Native American Heritage Month, which is great to see. On the ice, Stalock and Petr Mrazek have specially designed Native American Heritage Masks to wear throughout the month, designed by artists Patrick Hunter (Ojibwe) and Nicole Banditgrey (Potawatomi).

The Blackhawks return to the ice at the United Center on Thursday to face the Los Angeles Kings with a puck drop at 7:30 p.m. CDT.

— Boris Katchouk made his presence felt in the first period, plastering Frederick Gaudreau with a monstrous hit in the Minnesota zone. The outing was Katchouk’s second of the season after missing the first seven games with an ankle injury.

— Jonathan Toews continued his hot start to the season with another goal, his fifth of the season. Defenseman Filip Roos picked up his first career point on the tally after reading the play well to step up and start the rush for the Hawks.

— Andreas Athanasiou continues to be a pleasant surprise for the Blackhawks. His offensive revelation saw a potential goal-of-the-year candidate during the game, turning Matt Dumba inside out before sending a slick backhander top shelf past Fleury.

— Max Domi further endeared himself to Patrick Kane, standing up to Tyson Jost after Jost hit Kane from behind. Head coach Luke Richardson also praised Domi’s willingness to answer following the game. Thankfully, Kane was not injured on the play.

— Alex Stalock enjoyed another quality start between the pipes for Chicago, making 32 stops, including a nice save on Joel Eriksson Ek on a partial breakaway in the final minute of overtime.

The Blackhawks will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting the New York Islanders for a 7:30 p.m. CDT puck drop.

Scoring recap: After a torrent start to the game, Buffalo cashed in first when Victor Olofsson clapped one home to take a 1–0 lead. The Blackhawks then tied the game with Jason Dickinson’s spirited effort to crash the net. Chicago extended their lead to 3–1 in the second period with tallies from Sam Lafferty and Taylor Raddysh. Tage Thompson scored twice in the third period to level the game at 3–3. In the overtime frame, Olofsson scored the game winner, his second of the game, converting a one-timer.

The good: Arvid Soderblom was brilliant, keeping the Hawks in the game early and registering 41 saves on the evening. It is early, but Chicago is clearly responding under the guidance of new head coach Luke Richardson. Though the talent is not there, they are competing, staying disciplined and are playing a gritty brand of hockey that has eluded Blackhawk teams in the last few years.

The bad: The team is competing and currently overachieving. Yes, there is plenty of time left and the early start for the Hawks will tail off at some point. How much it tails off will be interesting to monitor. With three potential generational talents in the upcoming 2023 NHL Entry Draft (Connor Bedard, Adam Fantilli and Matvei Michkov), it is critical that the rebuilding Hawks are in the best possible chance to have a top-three lottery pick come June. Sorry fans, but we should be rooting for them to lose.

The ugly: Through his first eight games as a Washington Capital, former Blackhawk Dylan Strome has one goal and five assists. One of his six points is in even strength hockey and he is a -5 to start the season. He is the same one-dimensional player, folks, and those that miss him should start to feel content that Kyle Davidson did the right think by letting him walk away.

The Blackhawks play next at home on Sunday versus the Minnesota Wild. That game will be at 6 p.m. CDT on NBC Sports Chicago.

A brief recap of the scoring: Zach Hyman opened the scoring for the OIlers, and then the Blackhawks scored two to close the first period, making it 2–1 after 20 minutes. The second period was a ping-pong back and forth, with Connor McDavid scoring, then a minute later Jonathan Toews on the power play, then McDavid again on the power play and then Max Domi scoring on the power play. In case it was not obvious, the second frame in particular was filled with trips to the sin bin. Then, in the third, the Oilers scored two on the power play to go up by one. Patrick Kane then scored with 3:30 to go, and then in the last minute, Leon Draisaitl put the Oilers ahead to get them the win.

• I do not think I have ever watched a game with so many power plays, with this one having a whopping 20 penalties taken between both teams.
• The good: The Blackhawks generated lots of power play opportunities, converting two while still generally doing well and getting good chances on the others that they did not convert on. The Blackhawks won more face-offs, had vastly more hits and played the brand of physical hockey they seem to be developing this season. Reese Johnson also picked up his first tally of the year.
• The bad: There is no reason why the Blackhawks should not have converted on more of their power plays. Ten tries, and all you have to show for it is two goals. Not that that is terrible, but getting a third could have made all the difference in the contest.
• The ugly: You cannot expect to win games when you give away the puck 13 times to the opponent’s two. Phillipp Kurashev looked bad and was a -3 on the night. Seth Jones, surprise, surprise, was a -2 once again.

The Blackhawks play next at Buffalo on Saturday night. That game will be at 6 p.m. CDT on NBC Sports Chicago.

A 2017 third-round pick of the Blackhawks, Barratt established himself as a promising prospect after a strong career at Penn State University. However, like many other players drafted by former general manager Stan Bowman—including defenseman Nicolas Beaudin, also dealt by Davidson on Wednesday—Barratt’s development stalled once turning pro in 2020.

In three seasons with the Rockford IceHogs, Barratt accumulated totals of 19 goals and 23 assists in 92 regular season games played. Barratt did not appear in a single NHL contest for the Blackhawks.

Like Beaudin, the trade signifies a fresh start back home for Barratt, a Bristol, Pennsylvania, native.

Zech spent parts of three seasons in the Boston Bruins organization, playing in 78 regular season games with the Providence Bruins before joining the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in 2021–22.

Zech will report to the Rockford IceHogs.

Beaudin failed to develop into what former general manager Stan Bowman hoped he would, as the 2018 27th overall pick has spent the vast majority of his professional career with the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, logging 137 total regular season games. Beaudin played in just 22 regular season games with the Blackhawks between the 2019–20 and 2021–22 seasons.

The deal also adds to the lengthy list of former first-round picks the Blackhawks have shipped out of town early in their careers, with every Hawks first-round selectee from 2008 to 2019 having played no more than 162 games with the team.

Additionally, the transaction also highlights yet another colossal failure by the Bowman administration, as the Blackhawks elected to pass on drafting defenseman Bowen Byram with the third overall pick in 2019 since the team had invested both of their 2018 first-round picks in Beaudin and fellow blueliner Adam Boqvist, who was shipped out of town in the Seth Jones trade with Columbus last summer. Instead, the Hawks selected forward Kirby Dach, who has since also left town when he was also dealt to the Canadiens at the draft this summer.

In Hillis, the Blackhawks are receiving nothing more than an organizational depth forward. Hillis suited up for one game for the Canadiens in the 2021–22 season, but has spent the rest of his professional career between the AHL and ECHL. Hillis had spent the beginning of this season with the ECHL’s Trois-Rivières Lions before the trade.

In a separate but related transaction, the IceHogs sent forward Riley McKay to the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket, in exchange for future considerations.

Hillis, a 2018 third-rounder of Montreal, has been assigned to Rockford, where he will likely spend much of the rest of the season.

• The Blackhawks jumped out to a quick 1–0 lead on a Taylor Raddysh power play goal and closed out the period with a late Patrick Kane goal, his first of the season. Philipp Kurashev scored the game-winner by victimizing an injured Gustav Forsling late in the second period, and Jonathan Toews had the insurance goal late in the third.
• Goaltender Alex Stalock continues to battle and keep the Blackhawks in games. Stalock stopped 28 shots, including 13 in the third period, while his teammates scored four goal on only 22 shots.
• Chicago held the Panthers to 0–6 on the power play, while scoring on one of their two power plays.
• Seth Jones was a -2 for his second consecutive game.
• Good or not, Luke Richardson has this Blackhawks team playing more physical than fans have seen in quite a long time. They registered 29 hits against Florida’s 17, which seems to be working.

The Blackhawks host Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday evening. The puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CDT.

— Sam Lafferty scored his first goal of the season on a shorthanded goal to tie the game at 2–2. He scored his second goal of the game less than two minutes later, again shorthanded.
— Taylor Raddysh added his first goal of the season in the third period.
— Jason Dickinson was impressive in his Blackhawks debut, registering one goal and two assists.

The Blackhawks now travel home for their home opener on Friday against the Detroit Red Wings. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CDT.

— Speaking of offense, the Blackhawks had 27 shots on Vegas goalie Logan Thompson, which should have generated at least one goal. Props to the letfy in the Vegas net.
— The Blackhawks had their chances. Andreas Athanasiou had a breakaway, and there were quality chances from Tyler Johnson, Connor Murphy, Taylor Raddysh, and several others.
— The Blackhawks did not give up any more power-play goals after giving up four the night before in Colorado.
— Chicago led in face-off percentage, this time by a more slim margin at 51%.
— Those baby-poop colored Vegas jerseys stink.

The Blackhawks will have today off to travel to San Jose, California, to face the Sharks on Saturday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 p.m. CDT.
