Once again, free to object to any of my assessments. These grades are mine alone. They are not a reflection of any other member of The Rink and their assessments, nor the organization as a whole.

For further insight into my grades, please listen to the upcoming Rinkcast.

Grading criteria

Like last year, grades are based on two factors: Objective output and subjective assessment.

• • Objective output: Advanced and counting stats
  • Subjective assessment: Objective output when assessed with previous seasons outputs and preseason expectations, along with unquantifiable value to the team and teammates

Blackhawks roster grades

Criteria

• Must currently be on the Blackhawks’ roster
  • This excludes players traded away
• Must have played at least 25 games with the Blackhawks
  • This excludes players acquired at the trade deadline, or rookies who made their debuts late in the season (Anton Frondell, Sacha Boisvert)

The players are presented in point total order, with the highest-scoring Blackhawk listed first.

Connor Bedard

• Final grade: A
• Midterm grade: A
• Season stats: 69 games played, 30 goals, 45 assists, 75 points

Positives

• Career high in goals, assists and points
• Significant improvement at the dot (47.1%)

Negatives

• Scoring regressed to end the season
• Defensive woes

Assessment

What is to say about Bedard that has not been said already? A career season for the 20-year-old in the final year of his entry-level contract, Bedard looks ready for the “C” on his chest.

Of course, there are still areas to grow. His defensive metrics leave a lot to be desired. However, he was not drafted to be a Marian Hossa. Bedard is offensively skilled, and is poised for 100+ point seasons sooner rather than later.

Tyler Bertuzzi

• Midterm grade: A+
• Season stats: 79 games played, 32 goals, 26 assists, 58 points

Positives

• Career high in goals (32)
• Led the team in power play goals (11)

Negatives

• Unsustainable shooting percentage (19.5%)

Assessment

Perhaps a surprise, but I am allowing Bertuzzi to keep his A+ grade. One of the few Blackhawks that did not disappear to end the season, Bertuzzi tallied 22 points in his final 37 games.

His shooting percentage dipped from 23.2% to 19.5% to end the season, both marks not easily replicated. Regression in shooting could be in Bertuzzi’s future. However, his consistency in the face of team-wide struggles allows him to keep his grade.

Frank Nazar

• Midterm grade: B-
• Season stats: 66 games played, 15 goals, 26 assists, 41 points

Positives

• Scoring touch returned near the end of the season
• Efficient center skillset

Negatives

• Extremely streaky scorer
• Jaw is a magnet for pucks

Assessment

Is it too unrealistic to ask Nazar to wear a full face mask for the remainder of his career? Despite the number of injuries, Nazar has proven himself to be an effective middle-six center at worst going forward, finding points in bunches down the stretch.

The problem, however, was his injuries. From his shoulder to his jaw being constantly bombarded with pucks, the young center could not catch a break. It affected his play. There were times where he played without snarl to avoid contact, and it prevented him from being the scoring center we have seen. A full season of health is what the doctor ordered for this upcoming season.

Ilya Mikheyev

• Season stats: 77 games played, 18 goals, 18 assists, 36 points

Positives

• The only Blackhawk with a positive plus/minus (+2)
• Strong scoring to end the season
• Career high in points (36)

Negatives

• Contract year bump in production?

Assessment

Like Bertuzzi, Mikheyev was one of the few Blackhawks to show up after the trade deadline. With 22 points in his final 37 games, Mikheyev brought the scoring, speed and defensive play from the bottom six.

The question becomes to pay or not to pay? At 31 years old, do the Blackhawks risk giving term to a veteran in his early 30s?

Teuvo Teravainen

• Midterm grade: C
• Season stats: 75 games played, 14 goals, 21 assists, 35 points

Positives

• Aggressively fine

Negatives

• Scoring dried up
• Stuck on the fourth line at times

Assessment

I described Teravainen as “aggressively fine” in my midterm grades. Now, he is bordering on aggressively mediocre. With 14 points in his final 31 games, his offensively output is essentially gone. He can still distribute the puck and play a sound defensive game, but he may find himself marooned on the bottom six, or even the fourth line, for the rest of his Blackhawks tenure.

Andre Burakovsky

• Midterm grade: A-
• Season stats: 75 games played, 11 goals, 22 assists, 33 points

Positives

• Good until the new year

Negatives

• Everything in 2026

Assessment

Harsh? Perhaps. Incorrect? Absolutely not! Burakovsky recorded four points in his last 35 games of the season. Starting the season on the first line with Bedard, he quickly dropped to the bottom six and continued his lack of production.

My strongest opinion for this offseason is that Burakovsky should not be a Blackhawk next season. A buyout seems imminent for him, and I fully agree with that move.

Ryan Donato

• Midterm grade: C
• Season stats: 82 games played, 15 goals, 15 assists, 30 points

Positives

• Clean bill of health
• Still an effective two-way forward

Negatives

• Dramatic scoring drop from last season

Assessment

Another “aggressively fine” forward. Donato is who he is, a bottom-six two-way forward who shows flashes of offense, but is mostly there to make sure bad things don’t happen when he is on the ice.

The question is, was this what the Blackhawks expected when they signed him to a four-year extension in the offseason? Time will tell how his contract will age.

Ryan Greene

• Midterm grade: B+
• Season stats: 81 games played, 12 goals, 17 assists, 29 points

Positives

• Efficient bottom-six center
• Can move up and down the lineup

Negatives

• Scoring output does not match his effectiveness

Assessment

I will admit it, I have a soft spot for Greene. His counting stats don’t jump off the screen, but he sure passes the eye test. Whether playing wing on the first line with Bedard, or centering the third line, Greene does his job.

Louis Crevier

• Midterm grade: B+
• Season stats: 78 games played, seven goals, 18 assists, 25 points

Positives

• Best plus/minus of any Blackhawks defensemen (-2)
• Wicked shot
• Two-way game
• Pairs with anyone

Negatives

• Made me look stupid

Assessment

I must come clean. I was dead wrong about Crevier in my midterm grades. Something possessed me to say that he looked no better than a third-pairing guy. He responded by being Chicago’s best defenseman of the season. There is no denying what he did this season.

Artyom Levshunov

• Midterm grade: B+
• Season stats: 68 games played, two goals, 22 assists, 24 points

Positives

• Dynamic offensive defenseman when on his game
• Most power-play assists by a Blackhawks defenseman

Negatives

• Extremely inconsistent
• Defensive game
• Health issues

Assessment

I still believe in Arty, and will defend him from all attackers. That being said, he had a poor end to his season. With inconsistencies and an injury cutting his season short, it was not the strongest start for the former second overall pick.

Criticism will be thrown his way, but the skill is there. Time is Arty’s best ally, and next season will be another chance for him to show what he can do at the NHL level.

Alex Vlasic

• Midterm grade: B-
• Season stats: 81 games played, two goals, 19 assists, 21 points

Positives

• Solid in the defensive zone

Negatives

• Lack of offensive production
• Lapses in play

Assessment

Vlasic went from a steal of a contract to a genuine concern at times. Not known for his offensive spark, Vlasic may have been asked to do too much this season. Technically the elder statesman of the defense, Vlasic was expected to play first-pairing minutes at 24 years old. Once Connor Murphy was traded, his role expanded again.

It proved too much at times. The hope is that other defensemen will take the load off of his shoulders next season. If not, a second-pairing defenseman will once again be asked to put a mediocre defense unit on his shoulders.

Oliver Moore

• Midterm grade: B+
• Season stats: 51 games played, five goals, 14 assists, 19 points

Positives

• Strong skater
• Effective at the dot (48.3%)

Negatives

• Lack of scoring at the NHL level
• Ended the season injured

Assessment

Moore only played nine games with the Rockford IceHogs to start the season before making his way to Chicago. His speed and faceoff ability translated well to the NHL. However, his scoring touch did not show up. With five points in his final 22 games of the season, more should be expected from Moore.

Wyatt Kaiser

• Midterm grade: B
• Season stats: 77 games played, six goals, 11 assists, 17 points

Positives

• Solid defensive play
• Secondary puck distributor

Negatives

• Defensive lapses
• Noticeably bad performances

Assessment

Not much to say about Kaiser. How he was at the midway point of the season was essentially what he was a the end. Consistent, with a few ugly games here and there.

Nick Lardis

• Blackhawks season stats: 41 games played, 10 goals, five assists, 15 points
• IceHogs season stats: 35 games played, 18 goals, 14 assists, 32 points

Positives

• Late-season scoring spark
• Growing consistency

Negatives

• Defensive game
• Inconsistent spot in the lineup

Assessment

A season split nearly evenly between Chicago and Rockford, Lardis scored 28 goals in his first professional season. The worries that his scoring touch in Brantford would not translate have been erased.

Now it is to be determined where in the lineup Lardis settles into, if a long-term spot is meant for him.

Sam Rinzel

• Midterm grade: C-
• Blackhawks season stats: 60 games played, four goals, 10 assists, 14 points
• IceHogs season stats: 23 games played, two goals, 12 assists, 14 points

Positives

• Strong end to the season
• Workhorse between the NHL and AHL

Negatives

• Early inconsistencies
• Defensive lapses

Assessment

After spending some more time in Rockford to hone his game, Rinzel finished the season with the Blackhawks with more success. Playing 83 professional games this season, Rinzel showed the endurance needed of an NHL defenseman.

Like with Arty, improvements are expected come next season.

Matt Grzelcyk

• Midterm grade: C+
• Season stats: 69 games, zero goals, 12 assists, 12 points

Positives

• Fine bottom-pairing guy
• Puck mover

Negatives

• No offense
• Undersized
• Ended the season injured

Assessment

The hardest part about grading Grzelcyk was finding a photograph of him. He was invisible both in a positive and a negative way. You never had to worry about Grzelcyk, but neither did the opponent. He is going to be one of those players that makes fans go, “oh yeah, he played for the Blackhawks, forgot about that.”

Landon Slaggert

• Midterm grade: C-
• Season stats: 53 games played, three goals, four assists, seven points

Positives

• Came into his own as a fourth liner as the season went on
• Decent physical game

Negatives

• Limited skillset
• Scoring output

Assessment

A player who improved as the season went on, Slaggert subtly impressed with his two-way game fortifying the fourth line. Not flashy, but not asked to be, he took off following the departure of Colton Dach. Perhaps knowing he didn’t have to fight Dach for fourth-line minutes upped his confidence and solidified his game.

Sam Lafferty

• Final grade: B
• Midterm grade: N/A
• Season stats: 29 games played, one goal, one assist, two points

Positives

• Simply did what was asked
• Positive locker room presence

Negatives

• Just a 13th forward

Assessment

An obligatory “thank you for your service” grade. Lafferty did what was asked of him, which was mostly to practice hard and sit in the press box. When asked to play, he mostly spent time on the fourth line, with the occasional cameo as a defenseman when the lineup thinned.

Finishing his career with the Blackhawks, Lafferty had a thankless job. He should be commended for it. Not many could go through a final season like his and keep his chin up.

Spencer Knight

• Midterm grade: A
• Season stats: 55 games played, 19 wins, 25 losses, 11 overtime losses, .902 save percentage, 2.82 goals against average

Positives

• Consistency
• Franchise goaltender

Negatives

• Dip in production to end the season

Assessment

It would be difficult to not give Spencer Knight an A for his season. He held the fort behind a horrid defensive unit. The 11 overtime losses is proof that he kept this team in games that they had no business being in.

Perhaps a bold take, but once this defense gets to be at least average, Vezina votes will start going Knight’s way.

Arvid Soderblom

• Midterm grade: D+
• Season stats: 24 games played, eight wins, 13 losses, three overtime losses, .880 save percentage, 3.80 goals against average

Positives

• Better end to the season

Negatives

• Just about everything else

Assessment

I struggle with Soderblom. I do not want to be harsh with how bad the defense is, but his play has not helped his case. When a goalie has a sub-.890 save percentage and gives up nearly four goals per game, there’s not a lot that context can do to help.

Realistically, he could find himself going through waivers in the offseason to allow Drew Commesso to take his spot behind Knight as primary backup goaltender. His days in Chicago may be numbered.

Blackhawks/IceHogs roster grades

Criteria

• At least 10 (three for goalies) games with both the Blackhawks and the IceHogs
• Grading is a cumulative grade based on performance in the NHL and AHL

Kevin Korchinski

• Midterm grade: B
• Blackhawks Season stats: 13 games played, zero goals, two assists, two points
• IceHogs Season stats: 53 games played, two goals, 24 assists, 26 points

Positives

• AHL All-Star
• Maintained output from last season

Negatives

• Still doesn’t stand out in the NHL
• Undersized
• No “big step” in production

Assessment

Korchinski is an enigma. I get the feeling that the Blackhawks don’t want to get rid of him, fearing a Gustav Forsling situation. I also get the feeling that the Blackhawks don’t know what to do with him. If re-signed, he will have to stay on the NHL roster. He will not be waiver exempt next season. If he gets a bridge contract, what will it look like?

Ethan Del Mastro

• Midterm grade: C-
• Blackhawks season stats: 10 games played, zero goals, one assist, one point
• IceHogs season stats: 45 games played, two goals, 16 assists, 18 points

Positives

• Physical game
• IceHogs’ defenseman of the year

Negatives

• Struggles at the NHL level
• Speed and acceleration

Assessment

Like with Korchinski, Del Mastro becomes a restricted free agent this offseason. Being named the IceHogs’ defenseman of the year, perhaps there is something there. However, like with Korchinski, I get the feeling the Blackhawks are unsure of what to do with him. If re-signed, he will no longer be waiver exempt. The dilemma of whether to sign Del Mastro, Korchinksi, both or neither will be an interesting saga to track this offseason.

Drew Commesso

• Midterm grade: A
• Blackhawks season stats: three games played, two wins, one loss, zero overtime losses, .918 save percentage, 2.31 goals against average
• IceHogs season stats: 36 games played, 13 wins, 19 losses, two overtime losses, one shootout loss, .903 save percentage, 3.00 goals against average

Positives

• Looked confident in his NHL appearances
• Strong AHL season

Negatives

• Stats in Rockford affected by team in front of him

Assessment

Bold prediction: Commesso starts next season as Knight’s backup. He has my seal of approval. He is ready for the NHL, and his three games with the Blackhawks this season proved it. He’s played 113 games with Rockford over three seasons, looking above average, if not great.

IceHogs roster grades

Criteria

• Player must have played less than 10 games with the Chicago Blackhawks
• Must have played at least 48 games with the Rockford IceHogs.
• Grade is based on performance with the IceHogs, along with limited showcase with the Blackhawks
  • Performance with the Blackhawks holds less weight

Brett Seney

• 2024-25 grade: B
• Season stats: 64 games played, 16 goals, 34 assists, 50 points

Positives

• Rockford’s leading scorer
• Effective captain
• AHL All-Star

Negatives

• Second on the team in penalty minutes

Assessment

I get accused of being too much of a fan of Seney by my colleagues here at The Rink. Perhaps they are right, but Seney deserves the praise. He started this season on a line with Moore and Lardis, and as the season continued, he led this team through a tough season that will end without a playoff berth.

Dominic Toninato

• Midterm grade: C-
• Blackhawks season stats: eight games played, zero goals, one assist, one point
• IceHogs season stats: 52 games played, 16 goals, 27 assists, 43 points

Assessment

His performance with the Blackhawks, while bad, should not be overvalued. He signed a two-way contract with the clear intent of mostly playing with Rockford, only finding himself up with Chicago when injuries thinned the Blackhawks’ lineup.

In Rockford, he scored at will. With another year on his contract, he should give Rockford’s top six a boost in production.

Joey Anderson

• 2024-25 grade: C-
• Season stats: 50 games played, 17 goals, 15 assists, 32 points

Positives

• Consistent middle-six production

Negatives

• Series of injuries limiting play

Assessment

After appearing in 18 NHL games last season, Anderson remained in the AHL the entire season. He performed well, with multiple injuries limiting his playing time. He provides stability when he plays, the concern is whether to bring him back following a knee injury earlier this month.

Jamie Engelbert

• Final grade: B-
• Season stats: 68 games played, nine goals, 19 assists, 28 points

Positives

• Defensive efficiency

Negatives

• Offensive output

Assessment

In his first full AHL season, Engelbert provided some defensive spark to the bottom six. Like the entrire roster, he struggled offensively.

Engelbert was extended in March, bringing him back to Rockford for the 2026-27 season.

Gavin Hayes

• Final grade: B+
• 2024-25 grade: C
• Season stats: 57 games played, 13 goals, 13 assists, 26 points

Positives

• Late-season scoring streak
• Improved play across the board compared to last season

Negatives

• Season-ending injury halted progress

Assessment

Once the lineup opened up following Lardis’ and Moore’s promotion, Hayes took advantage the most. His scoring after the new year gave reason to believe he could get a cup of coffee with the Blackhawks late in the season.

However, an unfortunate injury cut his season short. Without his scoring, Rockford struggled in the offensive zone, leading to a season without playoff hockey.

Samuel Savoie

• Final grade: A-
• 2024-25 grade: B+
• Season stats: 60 games played, 11 goals, 14 assists, 25 points

Positives

• Improved production from last season
• Effective pest

Negatives

• Increased penalty minutes from last season

Assessment

A fan favorite in Rockford, Savoie is doing everything he can to make his NHL debut. His season production proves he has the skill to complement his pesky play.

This season, like with many IceHogs players, Savoie found himself in the penalty box more than last season. The hope is that he, like the team, can reign it in next season.

Martin Misiak

• Final grade: C+
• Season stats: 61 games played, four goals, 11 assists, 15 points

Positives

• Bottom-six output

Negatives

• Usual rookie growing pains

Assessment

Misiak’s first professional season was not much to write home about. He played well, avoided the penalty box and produced like a bottom-six forward in the AHL should. A clearer picture of who Misiak could be will be made next season.

Connor Mylymok

• Final grade: C-
• Season stats: 51 games played, three goals, seven assists, 10 points

Positives

• Loves to fight
• Willing to throw the body around

Negatives

• 202 penalty minutes
• Multiple suspensions
• Little offensive output

Assessment

Mylymok sure likes the fight. When coach Jared Nightingale needs a team protector, Mylymok makes it into the lineup. This has led to an absurd 202 penalty minutes and multiple suspensions due to passing the league’s limit on fighting majors.

Other than that, Mylymok is an old-school fourth liner with little offensive skill.

Taige Harding

• Final grade: B
• Season stats: 46 games played, three goals, six assists, nine points

Positives

• Physical presence
• Effective defensive play

Negatives

• 105 penalty minutes

Assessment

I realize Harding does not technically make the cut based on my criteria, however, the IceHogs still have two remaining regular season games on Friday and Saturday. It can be assumed that Harding will play the remaining two games, therefore becoming eligible.

Harding, like Mylymok, found himself in the penalty box a lot. Willing to drop the gloves often, Harding, at 6-foot-6, is willing to use his natural size and strength to overpower opponents. That willingness sometimes gets him in penalty trouble, but if he can control it next season, he should anchor Rockford’s defense.

Dillon Boucher

• Season stats: 51 games played, three goals, five assists

Positives

• Physical presence

Negatives

• 112 penalty minutes

Assessment

Once again, another IceHog with over 100 penalty minutes. Boucher’s first season in the AHL was defined by fights, penalties and fights.

With 11 games left in the regular season, Rockford would need to win out to possibly make the playoffs. Hope is dwindling for the Hogs, and the organization seems to know it. Recent roster moves by Rockford reflects the teams desire to solidify next season’s roster.

The first transaction made that will affect next season was the trading for Derrick Pouliot, already covered in a previous article.

On March 13, the IceHogs made two transactions that have already made an impact. First, they signed college free agent Chase Dafoe. The former captain of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks, Dafoe has played four games with the Hogs, recording two goals. Dafoe is signed through the 2026-27 season.

On the same day, the IceHogs acquired forward Ryland Mosley from the Cleveland Monsters in exchange for future considerations. Mosley, 26 years old, has recorded one assist in two games with Rockford.

On March 16, Sacha Boisvert signed an entry-level contract with the Blackhawks. Making his debut on Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers, Boisvert will remain with the NHL club for the remainder of the regular season. Like with Frank Nazar and Oliver Moore, it is reasonable to believe Boisvert could begin next season in Rockford to hone his craft.

A week later, on March 23, the IceHogs re-signed forward Jamie Engelbert to an extension. With 25 points in 60 games with Rockford, Engelbert remains with his ECHL coach for one more season.

Two days later, Jiri Felcman, a 2023 third-round pick, signed a professional tryout (PTO) with the IceHogs. With 52 games with the SC Langnau Tigers of the National League, Feldman recorded three goals and 17 assists this season. Felcman then signed his entry-level contract today, bringing him to North America for the next three seasons.

Finally, Rockford re-signed forward Kevin Lombardi through the 2026-27 season on Thursday. The 26-year-old forward has split time this season between Rockford and the Indy Fuel. In 35 games with the Hogs this season, Lombardi recorded 21 points.

This season may end with the IceHogs missing the playoffs. Rockford missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2018-19 seasons would be a let down. However, a lot of talent remains. Key contributors like Taige Harding, Samuel Savoie and Gavin Hayes remain under contract next season. Prospects like Marek Vanacker and AJ Spellacy, signed to their entry-level contracts, will add talent next season.

The 2025-26 season rolls on. Rockford will host the Iowa Wild on Saturday at 7 p.m. CDT.

Skills Competition

On Feb. 10, the festivities began with the Skills Competition.

Before the competition took place, IceHog all-stars took time to take answers from the media.

“Should be fun … compete … meet new guys … fun to do it with Lardis and Seens (Seney),” Korchinski said. “It’s going to be a blast playing for the home crowd.”

“I’m happy to be here,” Lardis said. “To be an all-star and to be in Rockford, pretty lucky to have it here.”

“Easy decision to join,” Seney said. “Seeing all the effort … gives people from other teams an inside look at how professional and how well-run Rockford is.”

Following player introductions and the national anthems, with the United States anthem being performed by legendary Chicago Blackhawks anthem singer Wayne Messmer, the festivities began with the puck control relay.

Two Hogs participated in this event in Seney and Lardis. In his attempt, Seney had unfortunately (and hilariously) ran into a camera man, causing him to lose his race. The hometown crowd let the cameraman know their displeasure with his interference with a chorus of boos.

However, Lardis did win his race, with some cheating. Lardis did acknowledge his cheating, but stated confidently after the Skills Competition, “if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.”

Although Lardis won his race, the Eastern Conference won three out of four races, giving them the early lead.

Korchinski and Seney later participated in the rapid fire challenge, being stonewalled by their opponent goaltenders.

After the rapid fire challenge, Lardis participated in the accuracy shooting challenge, falling one shot short of a perfect round.

In the final competition, all three Hog all-stars competed in the breakaway relay challenge, going 0 for 3.

All-Star Challenge

After a full day of events, including community outreach, a hall-of-fame ceremony and a press conference with the President and CEO of the AHL, Scott Howson, the All-Star Challenge somehow eclipsed the previous night’s competition.

The challenge began with player introductions, with the hometown Hogs receiving loud ovations. The loudest ovation was reserved for the anthem singer, Blackhawks anthem singer Jim Cornelison. The roar made its way to the BMO Center, with the Rockford crowd cheering throughout the entire anthem.

Following the anthems, the round robin competition began between the Central Division and the Atlantic Division. Each game consisted of two four-minute periods of 3-on-3 hockey. The Central Division decided to start the game with an opening line of Seney-Lardis-Korchinski, which received another roar from the home crowd.

The first game ended in an overtime loss for the Central, however, Lardis scored the first goal of the entire challenge, and scored in the shootout. Both goals fired up a very partisan crowd.

With the round robin standings based on games won, and goal differential, it came down to the final game of the round robin between the Central Division and the Pacific Division. Needing to win by four goals to advance to the championship, the Central pulled their goaltender twice while up 2-0 in an attempt to secure their spot. By some miracle, and a little encouragement from the hometown crowd, the Central scored twice. Winning 4-0, the championship would be determined in a final game between the Central and the Pacific.

The rematch would go in the Pacific’s favor, winning 3-1. Colorado Eagles all-star Jayson Megna won the BMO Most Valuable Player of the All-Star Challenge, preventing Korchinski from going back-to-back.

The success of the All-Star Classic could be felt from everyone. From the Rockford crowd chanting “ref you suck” twice on Wednesday night, to AHL President and CEO Howson heaping immense praise on the organization and city during his press conference, the Classic put the spotlight on Rockford, and they delivered.

“I loved the crowd, I love it here,” Korchinski said when asked about the crowd. “It’s very cool having it here.”

“Honestly, expected from these fans,” Lardis stated about Rockford’s faithful. “The support they’ve given us … it has been a lot of fun, the whole week, the whole year, it’s been unbelievable.”

If these festivities have proven anything, it is that the IceHogs organization, in every aspect, is first-class. The question is not “if” the All-Star Classic will return to the Screw City, but how soon can it return.

Season resumption

Despite the fun times the All-Star Classic presents, there is still a regular season to finish.

“Have fun tonight and right back in tomorrow,” Lardis said when asked postgame about the season. “Try to make a playoff push here; our team’s been struggling a little bit, there’s no excuse right now, it’s kinda go-time for our team to get as many points as we can.”

Go time for the IceHogs resumes on Saturday at home against the Milwaukee Admirals at 7 p.m CST.

Much like in November, the reasons are equally right in front of their faces, but seemingly just out of reach. Addressing these problems during the season may prove to be too difficult a task, but not impossible.

In the 18 games since my previous article, how many times have the IceHogs scored three or more goals in a game? The answer is seven. A scoring drought is affecting many members of the team.

Brett Seney has scored only one goal since the calendar flipped to 2026, that goal being on Jan. 3. When the captain and team-leading scorer records only five points in 18 games, the concerns mount.

Scoring seems to only be coming from two forwards: Rem Pitlick and Dominic Toninato. Pitlick has scored a respectable 10 points since the new year, with seven of those points being goals. Toninato, since returning from a stint with the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 3, has recorded 13 points, netting six goals.

The problem is everyone else. Kevin Korchinski has recorded five points with no goals since the beginning of January. Gavin Hayes has recorded only seven points in that span, and Samuel Savoie has struggled with merely four points, going scoreless in his previous five games.

When the majority of team scoring comes from two skaters, something has to give. If not, teams can focus in on Pitlick and Toninanto and completely clamp the floundering Hogs.

Defensive woes

On the other end of the scoring spectrum, in the 18 games since my previous article, Rockford has given up three or more goals a staggering 14 times.

Is it goaltending? Is it the defensive game plan? It is hard to not say both.

Korchinski, as impressive he is as a skater and as a point-scoring defenseman, has struggled in his No. 1 defenseman role on the defensive end. Although plus/minus is an imperfect stat, a rating of -18 since the previous article is a massive concern. Mixed in with his scoring drought, being on the ice a lot when scored against should be a concern for the team.

On the goaltending side, things have not been smooth for Stanislav Berezhnoy and Drew Commesso. In seven starts since the Christmas break, Berezhnoy has recording a save percentage above .900 in two starts. For Commesso, he has recorded a sub-.870 save percentage in half of his starts in that same stretch.

The IceHogs’ defense has not done their goalies any favors, and the goalies have not found consistency — a bad combination for a young roster.

Special teams troubles

The offensive and defensive struggles stand out most during special teams.

A power-play percentage of 13.5% is second-lowest in the division, ahead of only the Manitoba Moose at 13.2%. Like mentioned earlier, when scoring comes from only a couple of forwards, teams can hem in a power play.

On the penalty kill, a 82.6% kill rate looks impressive at first, sitting at fourth in the division. Looking closer, the realization that Rockford has allowed 31 power-play goals against should raise alarm bells. Tied for most in the division with the Chicago Wolves, the problem becomes apparent. The Hogs shoot themselves in the foot with penalties, constantly putting unnecessary pressure on themselves.

It’s not all doom and gloom

With all of this, it is hard to see a bright side to things. There still are diamonds in the rough.

The biggest diamond appears to be the development of Sam Rinzel. After being sent down to Rockford, Rinzel has recorded 13 points in 21 games. He played well enough to be brought back up to Chicago for three games in late January and early February, where he recorded one goal in three games.

Another bright spot is the three all-stars on this roster. On Jan. 15, Korchinski and Nick Lardis were named to the All-Star Classic. On Feb. 8, Seney was named an all-star. Having three members of the club make it to the All-Star Classic, which will be held in Rockford on Feb. 10 and 11, is commendable.

With 38 points in 47 games played, the Hogs sit four points behind the Milwaukee Admirals for fifth in the division. With five games in hand, Milwaukee holds the clear advantage, but with a victory over the Ads on Feb. 7, the Hogs have kept the door open.

It is too early to say it would take a miracle to make the playoffs, but the Hogs are in serious danger of needing one. The All-Star break gives the roster time to regroup, refresh and look to avoid missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2018-19 season.

Rockford’s season resumes on Feb. 14 at home against Milwaukee 7 p.m. CST.

The month of December began poorly as well, dropping their first two games of the month against the Colorado Eagles. Even with returning goaltender Laurent Brossoit for their Dec. 5 game, the veteran presence was not enough that night. However, good news would hit the IceHogs after these two games.

On Dec. 7, the IceHogs received two key contributors from the Chicago Blackhawks. They received defenseman Sam Rinzel and forward Landon Slaggert.

Rinzel, a highly coveted prospect for the Blackhawks, found himself in Rockford for the first time in his career following a slump in the NHL. Regarding Rinzel, Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill gave his expectations for Rinzel in his time in the AHL.

“This is a really hard league, if you start to struggle, to gain traction,” Blashill said. “So go down and get your swagger with the puck back. Then continue to improve defensively. … He’s not the strongest guy, so he’s got to learn how to defend really smart with his stick—one hand, two hands, knocking guys off balance but not getting into physical confrontations.”

Early returns have been positive for Rinzel. In his first game with Rockford on the road against the Iowa Wild on Dec. 10, Rinzel recorded two assists. He followed that performance up with another two assists against the Milwaukee Admirals on Dec. 12.

In five games with Rockford, Rinzel has recorded seven assists. It is safe to say that Rinzel has found the swagger with the puck, and Rockford is benefitting from his stellar play.

Along with Rinzel, Slaggert has paid dividends for the Hogs. With three points in five games, Slaggert has added depth scoring to a Hogs team desperate for it.

It is not just a youth injection fueling the reinvigorated Hogs. The addition of two veteran pieces has stabilized a struggling group.

The first key addition was the already mentioned Brossoit. After spending over a year being an enigma in the Blackhawks organization, Brossoit joined the Hogs on a conditioning stint at the beginning of December. After a rocky start in Colorado that saw him end the game with a .871 save percentage, Brossoit rattled off three straight wins, raising his save percentage to a respectable .909. He even recorded an impressive goalie goal in their Dec. 12 win against the Admirals.

After his conditioning stint ended, Brossoit was called back up to Chicago, but immediately waived on Dec. 15. After passing through waivers on Dec. 16, Brossoit returned to Rockford. It is still clear that Chicago would like to move Brossoit, as noted in Ben Pope’s article on Dec. 19. Until then, Brossoit looks to improve his game and keep Rockford in a playoff spot.

Along with Brossoit, the Hogs added another veteran in a savvy move by general manager Mark Bernard. On Dec. 14, the IceHogs traded depth defenseman Tyson Feist to the Bakersfield Condors for forward Rem Pitlick.

Pitlick, a member of the Rockford IceHogs from the 2023-24 season, immediately rewarded Bernard’s gamble with a four-point performance against the Manitoba Moose on Dec. 20.

Departures

Pieces moving in usually means pieces moving out for an AHL team. For the IceHogs, they are not exempt.

On Dec. 8, a day after Rinzel and Slaggert joined the Hogs, veteran forward Dominic Toninato got the call from the Blackhawks. With a two-way contract, Toninato was a clear call-up candidate in case the Blackhawks needed forward depth. The Hogs’ fourth highest scorer (third before the Pitlick trade), Toninato has one point in three games with the Blackhawks since his call-up.

Toninato’s departure from Rockford is expected to be short-term. The same cannot be said about Marcel Marcel. On Dec. 16, Marcel was released from his AHL contract, returning to Europe. The 2023 fifth-round pick was quickly being passed up on the depth chart, and felt it best for his career to leave the organization.

There were two significant call-ups with questions about how long they will stay with the Blackhawks. Those skaters are Ethan Del Mastro and Nick Lardis.

Lardis, Rockford’s second highest scorer, received the call-up on Dec. 12 following a shoulder injury to Connor Bedard. In four games with the Blackhawks, Lardis has recorded one goal. In a corresponding move, the Hogs recalled forward Kevin Lombardi from the Indy Fuel.

Del Mastro got the call up on Dec. 14 and has played two games with Chicago this season.

After winning three of their last five games going into the Christmas break, the Hogs have found positive momentum after a dismal November. Sitting at fourth place in the division, Rockford would make the playoffs if the season ended today.

With the new year approaching and further roster churn possible, Rockford will need to continue to find effective play from their depth. That effective play looks to continue on Saturday against the Texas Stars in Rockford at 7 p.m. CST.

Will these Hogs flip the script? How will the winning ways return? To find out, it would help to investigate what has transpired this last month.

The investigation

The most obvious place to look for why Rockford has slipped is their offensive output. In October, the Hogs averaged 3.625 goals per game. That rate has slipped to a mere 1.75 goals per game in November. In this month, the IceHogs have scored more two goals once, which was in their lone November victory against the Iowa Wild on Nov. 9.

Why has the scoring dried up? The simple answer is Oliver Moore. On Nov. 3, Moore, after six goals in nine AHL games to start the season, was called up to the Chicago Blackhawks. Even now, no member of the Hogs has matched his team-leading nine goals, despite being with the Blackhawks for most of November.

His absence is missed most by his linemates. Captain Brett Seney and Nick Lardis, although still effective, no longer benefit from Moore’s intense speed and shot on their wing.

Besides the top six, the rest of the forward group and the defense have struggled to give Rockford offense. Four of the Hogs’ regular defensemen, Kevin Korchinski, Ryan Mast, Taige Harding and Nolan Allan, have yet to score a goal this season. Along with the defense, only four forwards on the current roster have recorded four or more goals on the season. Those forwards being Seney, Lardis, Dominic Toninato and Aidan Thompson.

“It’s a percentage thing,” Thompson said on Tuesday regarding scoring. ” [We have to] continue to have a little bit more high-quality chances.”

Those high-quality chances have been hard to come by, especially on the power play. Scoring at a 10% rate, Rockford’s power play ranks third from the bottom in the AHL.

The positives

With only one win in the month of November, it may be hard to find positives. Despite the tough month, there are positives that deserve a spotlight.

One positive that remains for the Hogs is the goaltending. Despite the losses, goaltenders Drew Commesso and Stanislav Berezhnoy continue to keep the Hogs in games.

Commesso, in his 11 starts this season, has recorded an outstanding .921 save percentage, while limiting opponents to a 2.39 goals against average (GAA).

Berezhnoy is not far behind Commesso in effectiveness. In four starts this season, Berezhnoy has recorded an astonishing .915 save percentage and a 2.74 GAA.

Another positive that deserves a spotlight are two left-handed defensemen, Korchinski and Ethan Del Mastro.

Despite not recording a goal so far this season, Korchinski leads the Hogs’ defensemen in points. With 10 assists in 15 games so far, Korchinski has improved his ability to distribute the puck and be a force in the offensive zone.

Like Korchinski, Del Mastro has proved effective in the offensive zone. The only Hogs defenseman with a goal, Del Mastro currently has seven points on the season. Del Mastro also leads Rockford defensemen in plus/minus with +6. His two-way style of play has allowed Rockford to remain in the league’s top 10 in penalty kill, recording a mark of 83.9%.

“Process over outcome, it’s easy to say, it’s hard when you’re in the middle of it,” said head coach Jared Nightingale to the media on Tuesday about managing a losing stretch with this young team. “I do like the morale of our group … guys aren’t satisfied, we want to win hockey games … we’re constantly trying to show the guys the positive and teach along the way.”

It has not been perfect. The difficulty with having a young AHL roster full of prospects is when one of them shines, they get rewarded with a call up to Chicago. Life without Moore has proven difficult. His output masked a lot of early struggles with this young roster.

Even so, the problem is identifiable, and workable. Right now, the negatives are outweighing the positives. At the very least, positives still exist. With time, the Hogs can find a new way to get scoring from their entire roster. Once they do, the winning ways will return.

In the Central Division, there is no place to hide. The divisional gauntlet continues at home on Wednesday against the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Rockford began the season both as the youngest roster in the AHL and its least experienced, according to Elite Prospects. Mixed in with a first-time AHL head coach, many were prepared for some learning curves. The young IceHogs bucked that narrative against divisional foes right out of the gate.

After an impressive block party to get the season started, the Hogs hosted the division rival Milwaukee Admirals on Saturday. Milwaukee, who eliminated Rockford in the playoffs last season, looked to continue their spoiling ways in the season opener.

It was Rockford who struck first. With 4-on-4 hockey being played, Kevin Korchinski found captain Brett Seney, who shot a one-timer into the net.

“A little more ice to work with,” Seney said. “[Oliver Moore] made a great play in the middle … [Korch] made a great pass and I was just trying to get something on net.”

Despite taking the early lead, the Ads responded with less than four minutes to go in the frame. The score was 1-1 after the first period, and would remain tied through the second.

In the third period, Milwaukee took a 2-1 lead with 13 minutes left in the contest.

With time winding down, Rockford pulled goaltender Drew Commesso for the extra attacker. This proved effective. With 1:50 left in regulation, forward Jackson Cates deflected an Aidan Thompson shot to tie the game and force overtime.

In overtime, Rockford possessed the puck effectively, which led to Samuel Savoie’s game-winning goal.

“I saw a shooting lane,” Savoie said plainly after the game. “And I had to shoot it.”

The impressive opening-night victory could not have been achieved without the efforts of Commesso, who recorded 35 saves against a potent Admirals lineup.

Game two

The IceHogs had little time to celebrate their opening-night victory. Rockford immediately traveled to Des Moines, Iowa, to take on the Iowa Wild. The Wild, another division rival, was looking for their first win after dropping their season opener against the Chicago Wolves.

Unfortunately for the Wild, the Hogs denied them of their first victory.

The game was a rout. Rockford netted three first-period goals by Dillon Boucher, Moore and Jamie Engelbert. With their goals, Boucher has his first career AHL goal, and Moore has his first professional goal.

In the second period, Moore recorded his second goal of the night, assisted by goaltender Stanislav Berezhnoy, marking the goaltender’s first AHL point.

Iowa did cut the lead back down to three with a Tyler Pitlick goal, but that deficit would not last the period. Fourth-liner Connor Mylymok recorded his first career AHL goal to take a 4-1 lead into the final frame.

In the third period, Pitlick once again cut the deficit back to three. That would be the end of Iowa’s scoring for the game, but not for Rockford. On a power play, Dominic Toninato scored to make it 6-2. Nick Lardis assisted on Toninato’s goal, giving Lardis his first career AHL point.

Early returns on the young roster are promising. Despite the lack of experience, the team plays a mature game.

Moore, who many thought would start the season with the Chicago Blackhawks, has recorded three points in two games, tied with Boucher and Seney for team lead. Along with Moore, Lardis has been a positive for the IceHogs at only 20 years old.

When asked about sharing a line with these two forwards on opening night, the captain had praise.

“I thought they were great … as the game got going, we started to simplify things,” Seney said. “We’re still getting to kinda know each others games … they both have a ton of skill … as they kinda get used to the pace and the way the AHL is they’ll keep getting better.”

It is not just the young forwards who have impressed. The defensemen have shined in their ability to clear the crease and be strong on the puck. Ethan Del Mastro, who started the season with the Chicago Blackhawks before being sent to Rockford before the season opener, currently leads the Hogs in plus-minus and has recorded two assists. Along with Del Mastro, Korchinski has shown strides in his ability to distribute the puck and be a terror in the offensive zone.

When asked about early returns, head coach Jared Nightingale seemed pleased, but saw room to grow.

“It’s just the start,” Nightingale said. “Teams get better and better as the year goes … our play away from the puck [needs to improve].”

Early returns have shown promise for this young Hogs team. Like with their NHL counterparts, they rely heavily on the development of their young skaters, while surrounding them with veterans. It is one thing to win back-to-back games, it is another to sustain on-ice success and player development over an entire season. That is the goal in Rockford, and a strong start helps.

The IceHogs’ season continues on Friday at home against the Texas Stars at 7 p.m. CDT.

New man behind the bench

Shortly after the season ended, Rockford hired their new head coach. On May 30, Jared Nightingale was named the head coach of the IceHogs. Nightingale takes the job from interim coach Mark Eaton. Nightingale, a former captain of the IceHogs, returns to Rockford after serving as the head coach and director of hockey operations for the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays. With the Stingrays, Nightingale led the team to a 52-15-5 record, setting a single-season record for points and wins. He led the Stingrays to the Brabham Cup and won the ECHL Coach of the Year award.

A leader both as a player and as a coach, Nightingale looks to bring familiarity and experience to a young Hogs roster.

Saying goodbye

Rockford’s roster saw a lot of change in the summer, but no change was more impactful than the loss of the team’s leading scorer, as Cole Guttman, who led the Hogs with 57 points in the 2024-25 regular season, signed with the Los Angeles Kings in the offseason.

Guttman was not the only loss to the top six. Trade acquisition Aku Raty signed a two-year deal with Karpat in Finland. In 15 regular season games with the Hogs, Raty scored six points.

Along with Raty, forward Zach Sanford signed with HC Lugano of the Swiss league. Sanford was second on the team in regular-season points with 43.

It is not just the Hogs’ first- and second-highest scorers leaving, but fourth-highest scorer Gerry Mayhew has not re-signed and remains an unrestricted free agent. Along with Mayhew, restricted free agent Jalen Luypen did not receive a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent.

In all, the Hogs have seen a combined 155 regular-season points leave in the offseason. Rockford will need to replace an extensive amount of forward talent going into next season.

Saying hello (or welcome back)

All is not lost for the IceHogs, as key pieces were brought back or acquired during the offseason.

The biggest re-signing was the captain. Forward Brett Seney re-upped with Rockford on a two-year deal. Seney, 29, looks to continue leading this young team toward the playoffs. Coming off a 39-point season, Seney looks to regain the scoring touch he had in previous years.

Along with Seney, Rockford re-signed left-handed defenseman Cavan Fitzgerald. Originally brought in last season on a PTO, Fitzgerald proved valuable as a defensive anchor for the young defensive unit Rockford deployed last season. With a young chorus of defensemen like Kevin Korchinski, Nolan Allan, Taige Harding and newly acquired Ryan Mast, Fitzgerald looks to continue his veteran leadership with the Hogs for the next two seasons.

To add to the forward depth, the Blackhawks signed former Manitoba Moose captain Dominic Toninato to a two-way contract. Toninato, 31, tallied 36 points in 60 games in the AHL last season. With 189 career NHL games, Toninato provides Rockford with NHL experience and leadership. Time will tell if he spends more time in the NHL than in the AHL this season.

There were many other skaters brought back or signed for the upcoming season. However, it would take too long to provide details on all of them. What follows is a list of players re-signed or signed to one-year contracts.

Season outlook

Last season, Rockford was the launching point for a few skaters now with the Chicago Blackhawks. Players like Frank Nazar, Ethan Del Mastro, Landon Slaggert and Artyom Levshunov utilized their time with Rockford to become regular NHLers by the end of the season.

The trend looks to continue this season. Chicago has emphasized Rockford as an important stage for prospects getting into the professional game. When asked about his time in Rockford, Aidan Thompson praised his short time with Rockford last season.

“That’s one thing the coaching staff and the program does so well is preparing you for the next level, and I think it went really smoothly,” Thompson said.

“I have nothing but good things to say … they’ve been great so far in the process … we get treated so well just as prospects and coming into the program.”

When further asked about the difference between the college game and the professional game, Thompson emphasized the age and size of the opposition.

“Guys are a lot stronger, they have a lot more years of development … a little bit bigger, a little bit stronger,” Thompson said.

Thompson, who only has four AHL games to his name, looks ready to take advantage of a wide-open depth chart.

Thompson is not the only prospect looking for Rockford roster spots. Prospects like Harding, Ryan Greene and Nick Lardis look to join a roster filled with young skaters looking to make their way to the Blackhawks.

The IceHogs, like their NHL counterparts, sees their young players as their lifeblood. Rockford wants their roster teeming with youth, and want to provide them with a lot of runway. Bringing in a 41-year-old coach emphasizes this thinking. Rockford is a garden, and every garden needs the right amount of care to encourage growth.

IceHogs color commentator Dana Grey lent his thoughts on the upcoming season.

“These are really exciting times in both the IceHogs and Blackhawks organizations,” Grey said. “Two fresh faces behind both benches and a plethora of young talent that is [champing] at the bit to take the next steps. I can’t wait to see games back at the BMO Center and get this season going.”

Grey reflects the belief around the organization. Rockford is the land of opportunity; the garden in which young players can dig their roots and grow.

The chance for growth begins on Oct. 11 when the IceHogs’ regular season starts at home against Milwaukee.

Game One

The first two games stunned many, with the Hogs looking to pull off the upset. In Game One, with Rockford down by two going into the final frame, the Hogs stormed back with two third-period goals by Paul Ludwinski and Gerry Mayhew. Overtime would not last long. Just 12 seconds into overtime, a returning Colton Dach scored, giving Rockford the series lead.

Game Two was Rockford’s shining performance this postseason. With a hat trick from Joey Anderson, the Hogs routed the Admirals 6–1. This game also included Aidan Thompson’s first professional goal late in the third period. With a 2–0 series lead with chances to eliminate Milwaukee at home, it felt guaranteed to be an upset for Rockford. Unfortunately, it would not come to pass.

All momentum Rockford gained in the first two games felt sapped out during Game Three. Milwaukee came in desperate and determined. The young IceHogs roster looked outmatched at every turn, with seemingly no answer for anything the Admirals threw at them. Milwaukee’s aggressive play on the puck carrier in Rockford’s zone led to panicked play and bad turnovers.

By the third period, goalie Drew Commesso was pulled after giving up five goals in the first two frames. The frustration of their first loss of the playoffs showed in the third period, with multiple altercation between skaters taking place, leading to Kevin Korchinski leaving the ice with a game misconduct. Losing 6–2, the Hogs still had the chance to finish off the Admirals on home ice in Game Four.

Game Four started off far better than Game Three did for Rockford. Rockford scored twice in the first. With a 2–1 lead, the Hogs faltered in the second, giving up the lead and going into the third down 3–2. Despite outshooting Milwaukee 11–4 in the final frame, it was not enough.

Admirals goaltender Matthew Murray blanked Rockford when it mattered most, and the series would come down to a win-or-go-home Game Five in Milwaukee.

When it mattered most, Rockford put up a good fight, but it was not enough. Despite outshooting Milwaukee in the first period 15–5, the Admirals led going into the second frame.

The Hogs learned from Game Four’s second-period performance, because they came out strong in the second. Veteran forward Zach Sanford scored twice within eight minutes to take a 2–1 lead. Milwaukee would eventually tie it back up after a bad turnover created a goal for Fedor Svechkov.

It looked as though Rockford would keep the game tied, however, Admirals forward Jesse Ylonen had other plans. With just over a minute left in the second, he put the Admirals back on top.

The third period looked dire at first. Neither team could muster any sort of offense, and Milwaukee’s defensive wall looked impenetrable. Still, Rockford did not relent. With eight minutes left, Anderson knotted it back up at 3–3. It would remain 3–3 going into overtime.

Unfortunately, the bad penalties that plagued Rockford since Game Three showed up right away in overtime. Sanford, with two goals in the game, took a delay-of-game penalty 22 seconds into overtime. Overtime penalties on the road usually lead to disaster, and this proved to be true. Just over a minute after the penalty, Svechkov once again found the back of the net, ending the game, 4–3. Just like that, Rockford’s season was over.

If any IceHogs fan had been told that they would sweep the Wolves and take the Admirals the distance, they would have been impressed. However, a reverse sweep is difficult to swallow, even when Rockford was a heavy underdog. It takes a lot to beat a team like Milwaukee. This young Hogs roster got a crash course in what it takes to take down a good team with their backs against the wall.

This is not to say the Hogs got complacent; far from it. This series showed what needs to be done if Rockford wants to take the next level. Bad penalties and Milwaukee’s ability to frustrate Hogs skaters led to this outcome. Rockford will need to learn to play disciplined when frustrated, and not falter against pressure.

It is also important to point out the positives. The first should be how impressive it is that Rockford got this far. Being the fifth and final seed in the stacked Central Division, and being worst team in the playoffs based on season point total, the expectations were low. Taking on the Wolves could have been the end, considering how dominant Chicago was against Rockford all season. Sweeping them convincingly was shocking. Despite the loss to the Admirals, the final two games of the series were one-goal contests. The Hogs played competitively against a team that could have demolished them in a clean sweep. The loss hurts, but competing with this young roster was impressive.

Another positive point is how well the young Hogs skaters played in their first taste of professional playoff hockey. Samuel Savoie sticks out the most, with two goals and six points in seven playoff games. Finishing closely behind him, Thompson had two goals and two assists during the Hogs’ playoff run. Korchinski also managed two goals and two assists during these playoffs.

To go along with the previously mentioned prospects, others like Nolan Allan had four assists during the playoffs, Ludwinski had a goal and an assist, Artyom Levshunov had a overtime goal against the Wolves, and Gavin Hayes had two assists during the playoffs.

For a roster so young, and, on paper, so overmatched, they impressed many across the hockey landscape. Although disappointing now, a playoff run like this only helps the organization.

Final thoughts

I would like to thank members of the Rockford IceHogs organization for allowing myself and The Rink to cover the IceHogs during this season. First period

With an energetic home crowd, the Hogs came out firing.

A Rockford shot rang off the pipe, setting off the horn and stopping play a minute in. After review, the call of “no goal” was confirmed.

It was not a mistake the next time the horn sounded. Just over two minutes into the first, Joey Anderson sent the home crowd into a frenzy. Anderson’s goal started a small melee behind the Wolves’ net, sending Nolan Allan and Dominic Franco to the box with matching two-minute penalties.

After both men returned to the ice, Rockford continued the early momentum. Finding himself alone in front of the net, Kevin Korchinski tapped in Zach Sanford’s pass to double the lead with 14:16 left in the first.

When asked postgame about getting off to a hot start, head coach Mark Eaton emphasized setting the tone Rockford wanted.

“Make them weather our storm; we knew they were going to be a desperate team … we were able to get on them early and manage pucks well,” said Eaton.

The early 2–0 lead could have been undone by Levshunov’s double minor for high-sticking. Instead, the Hogs held tight.

The period ended at 2–0, with Rockford holding the shots advantage at 10–9.

Second period

The second period was the Drew Commesso show. With multiple odd-man rushes and high-danger chances against him, Commesso stood tall, not allowing momentum to shift back for the Wolves.

The period’s lone goal came on a breakaway by Gerry Mayhew, set up by Cole Guttman with 16:05 to go in the second period.

“Good play by Guttman; I didn’t have much room so I tried to make a move and I think the goalie kinda poke-checked and it came back on my stick and I put it in,” said Mayhew describing the goal.

Although the Wolves took the shots advantage 23–20 following the second, Rockford held a 3–0 lead going into the final frame.

It looked as though Chicago might force themselves back into the game following a tripping call on Mayhew. Instead, Rockford killed the penalty, and when Mayhew left the box with the puck in stride, bedlam took place. Mayhew dashed down the ice and extended Rockford’s now impenetrable lead.

“it was just a great play; (Fitzgerald) knew the penalty was over and just rimmed it to me … saw an opening,” explained Mayhew describing his second goal.

It felt as though Chicago unraveled as the period went on, with constant penalties, scrums and an inability to break through the brick wall known as Commesso. When Aku Raty sealed it with an empty-net goal with 2:25 left, the final straw was broke. Korchinski got into it with Wolves forward Ryan Suzuki, leading to both players leaving with matching unsportsmanlike conduct calls.

At the end, the Wolves were flat-out destroyed, a final score of 5–0.

Series notes

Game One felt stolen, Game Two felt like a squash match. In Game One, a few lucky bounces on both ends of the ice allowed Rockford to leave Rosemont with the series lead. In Game Two, the win felt guaranteed from puck drop.

“The message was just ‘get pucks behind their d(efense)’ … wear them down, and I thought we did a good job tonight … we just stuck with our game plan,” said Mayhew following Game Two.

If an MVP award were to be handed out for this series, it would be to Commesso. Saving 66 of 67 shots in the series against a potent Wolves roster, Commesso continues to be on fire in Rockford. Eaton and Mayhew had nothing but praise for their goaltender.

“It’s hard to put in words; he was phenomenal … by far best game we’ve seen him play, made some huge stops … really prevented them from getting any momentum,” praised Eaton.

“He’s playing great … you need a good goalie to get hot, and he’s hot,” said Mayhew about Commesso.

Talking about his performance, Commesso kept it simple.

“Just trying to continue to play my game, do my best to prepare and focus on what I can control leading up to the game,” explained Commesso. “Keep it simple, focus on one practice, one game at a time.”

If a second MVP award were to be awarded, it would be given to the Rockford crowd.

“The crowd was a huge factor tonight, they were awesome,” Mayhew said. “Probably the loudest I’ve heard them all season … it’s fun to play at home … hopefully we can have some more home games.”

With nearly a week before their next playoff game, the Hogs have a chance to rest, get healthy and prepare. One player to keep an eye on is Colton Dach. On April 24, Dach was assigned to the Hogs following his stint with the Chicago Blackhawks. Nursing an elbow injury, Dach will look to return to the ice in Rockford’s next series.

When asked about Dach by CHGO’s Mario Tirabassi, Eaton sounded positive regarding his availability.

“He skated with us today; it’s good to have almost a week before our next game to get him back into the swing of things and get him under pressure, facing some contact along the wall … he’s ready to go,” Eaton said.

Adding Dach to a scorching lineup only adds to the excitement, and expectations, leading into their next series against the Milwaukee Admirals. When asked about the Admirals, Eaton was straightforward.

“We have a good feel for them,” said Eaton. “They’re the No. 1 seed for a reason and we know it’s going to be a great challenge but we’ve risen to the occasion all year long and I’d expect nothing less from our group.”

The next round of the playoffs starts Thursday in Milwaukee at 7 p.m. CDT. It will be a best-of-five series.

Rockford will face either the Grand Rapid Griffins or the Chicago Wolves in a first round, best-of-three matchup. This will be Rockford’s fourth consecutive playoff appearance.

Captain Brett Seney, when asked about making the playoffs, expressed appreciation.

“Every year, it feels like our division is always so tight … it’s the time of year you want to be playing hockey and it’s going to be a good experience for some young guys and as an older guy, it’s something that I want to win,” explained Seney.

“I’ve played playoff hockey … I’m really looking forward to having a good, long run with this year with this group, and I know the group’s excited.”

Young forward Paul Ludwinski also spoke about making the playoffs in his post-game interview.

“Looking back … the growth our team has had … proves that we belong in the mix and we’re looking to make some noise in the playoffs,” said Ludwinski.

“With such a great locker room and great leadership, everyone is feeling more comfortable,” Ludwinski continued. “Playoff hockey is the best hockey, it’s the hardest to win … to be able to fight for a spot to get in, to play in the playoffs is exciting for me … going to be a learning curve but I’ll embrace the challenge.”

With three games remaining, and being six points behind the Wolves for the fourth seed, Rockford will hold the fifth seed for the playoffs.

Regular season outlook

With three regular season games remaining, the IceHogs have a chance to get healthy. After facing injuries to key forwards in Seney and Joey Anderson over the last month, they returned to the lineup this weekend, contributing to back-to-back wins over Tucson. Now, with a playoff spot guaranteed, key contributors can rest and avoid injury.

With key contributors resting, Rockford has a chance to give Chicago Blackhawks prospects experience at the professional level. Rockford has already seen Taige Harding, a Blackhawks third-round pick from 2021, signed his entry-level contract (ELC) on April 1. Since signing, Harding has dressed in five games with the Hogs on an amateur tryout (ATO), recording two assists.

Another Blackhawks prospect, Aidan Thompson, who signed his ELC on April 12, has joined Rockford on a professional tryout for the remainder of the season. Thompson, a 2022 third-round pick, made his debut with the Hogs on April 13 against Milwaukee. In his debut, Thompson played on the first line with Cole Guttman and Gerry Mayhew.

Along with Harding and Thompson, Rockford will have three skaters currently on the Blackhawks available for the playoffs. After the Blackhawks’ regular season ends on Tuesday, defensemen Kevin Korchinski and Artyom Levshunov, along with forward Colton Dach, can join the Hogs for the final three regular season games. They will join Ethan Del Mastro, who rejoined the Hogs on April 11 after two months with Chicago.

Grading criteria

Grades are based on two factors: Objective output and subjective assessment.

• • Objective output: Advanced and counting stats
  • Subjective assessment: Objective output when assessed with previous seasons outputs and preseason expectations, along with unquantifiable value to the team and teammates

Blackhawks roster grades

Criteria

• Must currently be on the Blackhawks roster
  • This excludes players traded away
• Must have played at least 25 games with the Blackhawks
  • This excludes players acquired at the trade deadline

Connor Bedard

• Grade: A-
• Season stats: 72 games played, 20 goals, 36 assists, 56 points

Positives

• Continued offensive output from rookie season
• Maintained clean bill of health

Negatives

• Noticeable cold streaks
• Self-admitted frustration with production
• Emotional outbursts leading to significant penalties

Assessment

Despite the noise surrounding Bedard’s season, his play has still shown why he was the most sought-after prospect since Connor McDavid. His offensive output this season, especially on the power play, reflects the strides taken by Bedard to improve his game from his rookie season. He is the second NHL player in the modern era to reach 40 goals and 70 assists as a teenager, joining the great Sidney Crosby.

That does not mean he is free from fault. He has nearly doubled his total penalty minutes compared to last season. A reflection of his emotional play style, Bedard will have to learn to reign it in when calls do not go his way during his career.

Tyler Bertuzzi

• Grade: C+/B-
• Season stats: 72 games played, 20 goals, 21 assists, 41 points

Positives

• When he is on, he can score and distribute in bunches
• Physicality to go along with skill

Negatives

• Extremely noticeable cold streaks
• Struggles to positively contribute to team when scoring dries up

Assessment

A difficult player to assess due to his streaky nature, Bertuzzi was brought in last summer on a four-year contract to be a net-front presence on the offensive side of the ice. He was also expected to bring a physical side to the top six while scoring 20 goals per season. Has he done that? The best answer for that would be somewhat.

The frustration comes from his lack of consistency. He will have stretches where he is a point-per-game forward and stretches where he produces less than a fourth liner. He is heavily dependent on his linemates setting him up. He does not have the ability to create for himself.

He has given Chicago a 20-goal, 40-point season, so I cannot scorn him too much, he just feels…off? Perhaps next season will be where he finds consistency with the Blackhawks.

Jason Dickinson

• Grade: D-
• Season stats: 59 games played, 7 goals, 9 assists, 15 points

Positives

• 49.5% faceoff percentage
• Still has defensive upside

Negatives

• Multiple debilitating injuries
• Massive offensive regression from last season

Assessment

The only surprise of this grading should be “how is he not an F?” It took a lot of mental pushing and shoving to not give Dickinson an F, however, a D- can be justified because of his injury struggles and defensive play.

There is not much else to say. Perhaps the last season of Dickinson’s contract can be moved to clear cap. If not, hopefully Dickinson can simply be better next season.

Ryan Donato

• Grade: A
• Season stats: 70 games played, 25 goals, 30 assists, 55 points

Positives

• Jack of all trades
• Career-high offensive output
• Contributes on any line

Negatives

• Concern about sustaining this level of play beyond this season

Assessment

The shinning star of the Blackhawks this season, Donato has had a career year. A career high in goals, assists and points, Donato found the right year to produce like a top-six forward given that he will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason with the cap rising dramatically.

The concern is obvious, was it a mistake to hold on to Donato at the deadline? I am of the opinion that keeping him and re-signing him is the correct decision, however, the possibility of overpaying Donato only for him to regress to the mean is of major concern. At only 28 years old, he should not disappear over night, but it is not an impossibility. Look no further than Philipp Kurashev as a possible reference point in that regard, but let’s hope Donato avoids that drop-off.

Nick Foligno

• Grade: C-
• Season stats: 68 games played, 12 goals, 17 assists, 29 points

Positives

• Team leader
• Normal bottom-six output

Negatives

• Dip in production from last season
• Overpaid for what he produces

Assessment

A tough season for the captain, Foligno has shown that age has caught up with him on the ice. Although 29 points is not a death sentence for a bottom-six forward, it is clear that what he brings on the ice is limited.

He still is an effective captain, and the young players have a lot of respect for him. His outspokenness about team performance and the negative impact of former Blackhawk defenseman Seth Jones is nothing to completely right off. However, the end is near for the captain.

Philipp Kurashev

• Season stats: 45 games played, 6 goals, 6 assists, 12 points

Positives

• Does not take penalties

Negatives

• Massive regression across the board from last season

Assessment

Kurashev will not be a Blackhawk next season, so why bother?

Pat Maroon

• Grade: B-
• Season stats: 62 games played, 5 goals, 13 assists, 18 points

Positives

• Relationship with young roster, especially Lukas Reichel
• Prototypical fourth-line plugger production
• Physical play

Negatives

• Nothing special on the ice
• Noticeably slow
• Bad defensive play

Assessment

A player whose off-the-ice impact far outshines his on-the-ice performance, Maroon’s last career season has been what Chicago has expected. Maroon has played the fourth-line plugger role with the ability to throw the body very well.

Off the ice, his relationship with young forwards like Reichel has shown his veteran leadership with this club. Although not quantifiable, it is a positive that has allowed the young Blackhawks to find their footing in the NHL.

Ilya Mikheyev

• Grade: B
• Season stats: 70 games played, 17 goals, 12 assists, 29 points

Positives

• Clean bill of health
• Streaky scorer
• Effective penalty killer

Negatives

• Limited upside

Assessment

A surprising treat for the Blackhawks, Mikheyev was acquired in the offseason from the Vancouver Canucks in a cap dump that netted Chicago a second-round pick. With injury concerns and a failure to meet expectations in Vancouver, the Blackhawks decided to give Mikheyev a shot. He has rewarded Chicago with a solid season.

Although his upside is limited, another season of bottom-six minutes while killing penalties is something Chicago will need going into next season.

Lukas Reichel

• Grade: C
• Season stats: 63 games played, 7 goals, 14 assists, 21 points

Positives

• Vast improvements over last season
• Speed still an asset

Negatives

• Noticeable cold streaks
• Defensive limits
• Limited upside

Assessment

This may come as a shock to my fellow Rink members, but I have appreciated Lukas Reichel’s season. After a terrible 2023–24 season, Reichel was brought back on a two-year contract with hopes that he could put last season behind him, and for the most part, he has.

His time on the fourth line has shown bits and pieces of upside. His speed is still an asset, and has been a little better with the rest of his game. That being said, he needs to have a very good 2025–26 season if he wants to be with the team after his current contract. With the prospects who will be ready by the 2026–27 season, Reichel will need to prove, without any doubt, that he belongs. If not, Reichel will have to find a new home.

Teuvo Teravainen

• Season Stats: 72 games played, 15 goals, 41 assists, 56 points

Positives

• Incredible distributor
• Power play specialist
• Avoids penalties

Negatives

• Sometimes overly pass-first

Assessment

After signing a three-year, $5.4 million per year contract with Chicago in the offseason, Teravainen continued to show the strong offensive play he developed while with the Carolina Hurricanes. A pass-first forward, his ability to create for his teammates in the offensive zone is an asset the Blackhawks will need while he is on the team.

His pass-first mentality has received scrutiny in the recent past, but so long as he can maintain his current effectiveness, that scrutiny will fall on deaf ears.

TJ Brodie

• Season stats: 54 games played, 2 goals, 8 assists, 10 points

Positives

• None

Negatives

• All of them

Assessment

There is not much to say about Brodie. He is not good, and he will most likely be bought out this summer. Brodie is Kyle Davidson’s biggest free agent failure.

Alec Martinez

• Grade: C-
• Season stats: 43 games played, 5 goals, 7 assists, 12 points

Positives

• Defensively responsible
• Safe partner for young defensemen

Negatives

• Health
• Slow on his skates

Assessment

A diet version of Connor Murphy, Martinez is a bottom-pairing defenseman who does his job. He has been trusted to pair with Artyom Levshunov when he received his NHL call-up, and has shown competence with younger players.

Unfortunately, he will miss the remainder of the season due to injury, a significant blow to team defense.

Connor Murphy

• Season stats: 59 games played, 1 goal, 16 assists, 17 points

Positives

• Defensive play
• Safe partner for younger defenseman

Negatives

• Offensive output
• Question marks with health

Assessment

The longest-tenured Blackhawk, Murphy has continued his consistent play this season. His “good, not great” play has given Chicago’s defensive core some stability with many moving parts. He is not going to light up a scoresheet, but he will pair with young defensemen well enough to justify his continued inclusion in the lineup.

Alex Vlasic

• Grade: B+
• Season stats: 72 games played, 4 goals, 24 assists, 28 points

Positives

• Special teams contributor
• Comfortable first-pairing defenseman
• Continued development from last season

Negatives

• Scoring output
• Noticeably poor games

Assessment

Vlasic proved to be the Blackhawks’ most effective defenseman this season, although that bar is not the highest to reach. Still, it cannot be denied that Vlasic is developing into a top-four, or even top-pairing, defenseman for the long-term future, and his contract very well could develop into one of the best in the NHL in short order.

That being said, there is still tremendous work needed to be done. Vlasic has had multiple games where he was the worst defensman on the ice. Like with Bertuzzi, consistency is the name of the game for Vlasic going into next season.

Arvid Soderblom

• Season stats: 33 games played, 30 games started, 8 wins, 17 losses, .899 save percentage, 3.17 goals against average

Positives

• Dramatic improvement from last season

Negatives

• Weaknesses from last season still prevalent
• Cooled off as the season went on

Assessment

With how bad last season was for Soderblom, there was nowhere to go but up. A solid bounce-back season for Soderblom, the 25-year-old goaltender has shown that last season may have been a fluke, and with a better defensive team in front of him, Soderblom could be a solid backup goaltender.

Blackhawks/IceHogs roster grades

Criteria

• At least 10 games with both the Blackhawks and the IceHogs
• Grading is a cumulative grade based on performance in the NHL and AHL

Joey Anderson

• Grade: C-
• Blackhawks season stats: 18 games played, 0 goals, 1 assist, 1 point
• IceHogs season stats: 30 games played, 16 goals, 9 assists, 25 points

Positives

• Effective top-six forward in the AHL

Negatives

• Ineffective in the NHL this season

Assessment

A forward who lost his place with the Blackhawks due to his lack of production, Anderson has been effective in Rockford this season. Since joining the IceHogs, Anderson has scored at will, with over half a goal per game.

Although his time with the NHL team is done, Anderson has provided the organization with stability in the AHL, which saves his grade.

Colton Dach

• Grade: B+
• Blackhawks season stats: 25 games played, 2 goals, 5 assists, 7 points
• IceHogs season stats: 33 games played, 12 goals,14 assists, 26 points

Positives

• Efficient scoring in the AHL
• Physical game that works in both the AHL and NHL

Negatives

• Struggles to score in the NHL
• Place in the NHL lineup a mystery

Assessment

A player who spent most of his AHL season on a line with Nazar, Dach’s ability to mix physicality and skill should allow him to be an effective bottom-six NHL forward in the future.

His AHL scoring output has not translated to the NHL yet, however, he is a noticeable forward in the NHL who should continue to develop. So, as long as he does not suffer the Dach injury bug, he will become a solid NHLer.

Frank Nazar

• IceHogs season stats: 21 games played, 11 goals, 13 assists, 24 points

• Dramatic development
• AHL all-star
• Penalty killer

• NHL scoring output is not catching up with his impact

Assessment

What can be said about Nazar that has not already been said? An AHL all-star who forced his way into the NHL, Nazar’s play has been a bright spot in a frustrating season. Although his counting stats may not jump off the screen, his two-way game has continued to improve, and his time in Chicago’s top six is essentially guaranteed.

Landon Slaggert

• Grade: B
• Blackhawks season stats: 23 games played, 2 goals, 1 assist, 3 points
• IceHogs season stats: 39 games played, 10 goals, 15 assists, 25 points

Positives

• Top-six forward in his first AHL season
• Effective two-way game

Negatives

• Same as Dach

Assessment

A lot of what I said about Dach can be said about Slaggert, minus the injury concern. Slaggert has shown strong offensive output in the AHL, but has struggled to score in the NHL this season. Slaggert should become an effective bottom-six NHL forward, as long as his development is not stunted.

Nolan Allan

• Blackhawks season stats: 43 games played, 1 goal, 7 assists, 8 points
• IceHogs season stats: 11 games played, 1 goal, 2 assists, 3 points

Positives

• Continued development from last season
• Positive play on both sides of the ice

Negatives

• Scoring output
• Limited skillset

Assessment

A former first-round pick, Allan’s first season in Chicago was a pleasant surprise to many, especially Andrew Bard, president of the “Nolan Allan Fan Club.” With expectations low, Allan showed upside as a bottom-pairing defenseman on the Blackhawks.

In his protected role in the NHL, Allan showed professional competence, and in the AHL, he showed the ability to play first-pairing minutes. Time will tell where Allan fits with the Blackhawks’ defensive scheme, but his first season was a positive start.

Louis Crevier

• Dramatic improvement from last season
• Uses size efficiently
• Improved defensive game

• Cannot be trusted with NHL top-four minutes

Assessment

Similar to Reichel and Soderblom, Crevier put last season’s performance in the rearview mirror. Crevier has used his size and strength effectively this season, and has gone from AHL fodder to a possible long-term piece.

That is not to say there are no glaring issues. His upside is not eye-opening, and with other prospects in his skill range, he could get flexed out by other prospects soon.

Ethan Del Mastro

Similar to Crevier, Del Mastro is a physical defenseman who looks best on the third pairing. He, like with Allan and Crevier, will need to develop beyond his physical, defense-first play style if he wishes to be a long-term staple on the Blackhawks.

Like with Joey Anderson, Athanasiou failed to maintain a spot with the Blackhawks this season. This, along with a wrist injury, put a damper on Athanasiou’s last season with the organization. However, in his limited time with Rockford this season, Athanasiou has scored at nearly a point-per-game rate. His speed translated immediately in the AHL, and he should continue to produce during the playoff push.

Jackson Cates

There is not much to write about Cates. Despite his recent hat trick, his value comes from his defensive game. Effective as a bottom-six forward, he has allowed young forward prospects to find their game as they make their professional debuts.

Assessment

A long-tenured member of the organization, Guttman has scored at will this season. Making the AHL all-star game as Nazar’s replacement, he is Rockford’s most talented offensive forward. He should be the Hogs’ first option for the rest of the season, and during the playoffs, despite his defensive limits.

Gavin Hayes

Assessment

An intriguing prospect currently with Rockford, Hayes is a responsible skater who avoids penalties and does not turn the puck over. Despite missing time with a significant shoulder injury, Hayes continues to develop well this season. The hope for Hayes is that the scoring touch that intrigued Chicago when he was drafted will be found soon, and it has flashed up at times this season, just not consistently.

Paul Ludwinski

Assessment

Ludwinski can be put into the same bucket as Hayes. He is a young forward in his first professional season struggling to find consistency, but has shown flashes as a responsible fourth-line center with room to improve.

It has been a tough season for Marcel with the IceHogs. Having been scratched often, Marcel has struggled to maintain a lineup spot due to his spotty play and tendency to take penalties.

Very lovingly referred to as “The Mayor,” Mayhew is yet another veteran forward brought in to provide an offensive boost. An admittedly streaky player, Mayhew distributes effectively while taking smart shots toward the net.

A Stanley Cup champion, Sanford has been on a hot streak throughout the month of March. A strong two-way forward, Sanford has rewarded Chicago’s decision to promote Nazar by immediately taking the second-line center spot in Rockford for himself. Despite his tendency to take penalties, Sanford has kept the forward group stable.

Samuel Savoie

A social media darling for Rockford, Savoie is an intriguing prospect in the Blackhawks’ system. A scrappy forward with an in-your-face mentality, Savoie could develop into the next Andrew Shaw. Though that is never a guarantee, this season has been a special one for Savoie. Having provided the Hogs with a two-way game that the bottom six desperately needs, Savoie has shown his worth despite not lighting the lamp often.

Another two-way veteran forward who leads the IceHogs, Seney has captained Rockford through a season full of call-ups and players getting their feet wet in professional hockey. Like with Sanford, his penalty minutes are worrisome, but his ability to distribute the puck on offense offsets his downside.

A plug-and-play defenseman, Felix often finds himself in the lineup when physicality is required. An impressive fighter, he has brought energy to a young Rockford team that needed a player who could drop the gloves and defend his teammates going into this season. Felix knows his role with Rockford and fills it well.

Cavan Fitzgerald

A leader for Rockford, Fitzgerald has provided the IceHogs with stable defensive play throughout the season. A player Eaton has trusted pairing Artyom Levshunov with through most of the season, Fitzgerald has fit in well in Rockford’s top four.

Assessment

With all of the hype focused on Levshunov, the development of Korchinski may escape some eyes. That is unfortunate, because Korchinski has exploded onto the scene this year with Rockford. An all-star who took home the game’s MVP award, Korchinski looks like a completely new defenseman compared to what Blackhawks fans saw last season.

This is not to say that there is not room to improve. With 50 penalty minutes on the season, Korchinski needs to tighten up his game. There is also need to improve his scoring ability if he wants to be an effective offensive defenseman in the NHL. That being said, he should be ready for the NHL next season, and his nine-game stint back in December proved as much. Korchinski was recalled to the Blackhawks today and will likely finish the regular season with the Hawks before returning to Rockford for the postseason.

Artyom Levshunov

Assessment

Levshunov’s season has been one of the most intriguing prospect seasons in recent Blackhawks history. After missing all of training camp and a few weeks of the AHL season due to a foot injury, Levshunov came out of the gate rough. Essentially learning on the fly, Levshunov was baptized by fire early in his first professional season. Though it may be a coincidence, his play started to improve once Mark Eaton was named interim head coach of the IceHogs. A former NHL defenseman, Eaton’s coaching and experience must have taken effect on Levshunov.

Since December, the strengths of Levshunov have shined dramatically. He is a sneaky-fast skater, he is great with the puck and can find his teammates anywhere on the ice. His improvements warranted a call-up to the NHL. In his short time in the NHL, Levshunov has been good. Not just for a 19-year-old with zero expectations good, I mean a good NHL defenseman.

The future is incredibly bright for Levshunov, and it is certainly reasonable to believe that Levshunov can make the Blackhawks’ 2025–26 opening night roster.

Drew Commesso

Assessment

If I had given out grades back in January, Commesso would have received a C+. Spending most of the season with a sub-.900 save percentage and sustaining an injury in mid-February, concerns were mounting among fans about his game. This outlook on Commesso changed dramatically. In nine games following his return, Commesso had a .954 save percentage, and has catapulted Rockford into a guaranteed playoff spot. With his recent play, a longer look in the NHL next season seems possible.

Following this hot streak, Rockford went cold, losing three straight. During this losing streak, top prospect Artyom Levshunov received a one-game suspension after a cross-checking penalty on Chicago Wolves defenseman Domenick Fensore on Feb. 23. Levshunov served his suspension during the Feb. 28 game against the Tucson Roadrunners, the final game of Rockford’s losing streak.

The roller coaster ended on a high note, with Rockford rallying off three straight wins, two against division rivals in the Texas Stars and Wild.

With a 7–6–0 record since the break, including three wins against the Wild, the Hogs have created a significant gap between them and sixth-place Iowa. Currently, with 54 points after 55 games, Rockford holds a 10-point lead over Iowa for the final playoff spot in the Central Division.

If Rockford wishes to supplant the Wolves for fourth place, the recent momentum will have to continue. Chicago holds a five-point advantage over Rockford with a game in hand. With Chicago’s pedestrian 4–5–1 record over their last 10 games, it is not an impossible task. IceHogs players understand the importance of playing in front of a home crowd. Following a 4–0 win over Iowa on March 7, Hogs forward Gerald Mayhew spoke glowingly about the home fans.

“When you have a crowd like that every night, it’s fun to play … since I’ve been here, the crowds have been great, it’s a fun barn to play in,” Mayhew said.

Although not guaranteed, playoff hockey appears to be in the picture for the IceHogs. The focus for Rockford for the final month of the season will be chasing down Chicago for fourth place in the Central. A three-game series in an arena where the Hogs have a winning record sets up Rockford for a deep playoff run.

Impressive performances

Since the all-star break, Rockford has seen contributions from all over the lineup. These three skaters have shined in that time.

Zach Sanford

With the strong play of forwards Brett Seney, Cole Guttman and Mayhew, Zach Sanford impresses the most. In 13 games following the break, Sanford has gone on a rampage, scoring eight goals and 10 assists, which has propelled the current winning stretch.

Sanford’s scoring has stabilized a top six that has seen massive changes during the season. Call-ups of forwards Frank Nazar, Landon Slaggert and Colton Dach required others to step up, and Sanford has answered the call.

Artyom Levshunov

With all eyes on the top prospect, Levshunov has thrived since the break. During the break, Levshunov was called up to the Chicago Blackhawks, getting valuable practice time with the club. The Blackhawks must have unlocked another level for Levshunov, because he has returned to Rockford on a tear. In 12 games since the call-up, Levshunov has scored two goals to go with seven assists. Along with this stat line, Levshunov has shown incredible speed in the ice, has led the rush from the defensive zone and has effectively killed penalties.

The Blackhawks must have been impressed with his play, because on Mar. 9, Chicago recalled Levshunov from Rockford and he made his NHL debut the following night against the Colorado Avalanche, looking strong in nearly 21 minutes of ice time.

Drew Commesso

Drew Commesso has backstopped the IceHogs during their current three-game win streak. In those three games, Commesso has a .953 save percentage and a 1.33 goals against average, highlighted by a 4–0 shutout victory against Iowa.

With this impressive stretch, Commesso has raised his season save percentage of .905. Following his performance against the Wild, Commesso talked about his current hot streak.

“It’s felt good … I’m just trying to play my game, keep having good habits, just doing everything I can, take it period by period … go one period at a time and then regroup from there … keep a stable balance … keep the same confidence going forward,” Commesso said.

With the NHL trade deadline on March 7, and the AHL roster deadline on March 14, Rockford received some bolstering, from both inside and outside the organization.

On Feb. 28, the Blackhawks loaned defenseman Nolan Allan to Rockford. After spending the season with the Blackhawks, Allan came in and immediately paired with Levshunov on the first pairing. In four games since joining the club, Allan has recorded a goal and an assist.

One day before the NHL trade deadline, forward Andreas Athanasiou was reassigned to Rockford. Spending most of his season with Rockford before spending eight games with the Blackhawks, Athanasiou has recorded two assists in two games since his return.

On March 7, multiple moves were made to aid Rockford in their playoff chase. First, Dach and defenseman Ethan Del Mastro were reassigned to Rockford. They were later recalled back to Chicago on the same day. This move allows Dach and Del Mastro to be playoff eligible for Rockford.

On the same day, the Blackhawks made a trade with the Utah Hockey Club, sending a 2026 fifth-round pick to Utah for the contract of Shea Weber, forward Aku Raty and defenseman Victor Soderstrom.

Currently in Sweden, Soderstrom is a former 11th overall pick of the Arizona Coyotes in the 2019 NHL Draft. Struggling early in his career at the AHL level, Soderstrom signed a contract with Brynas IL of the SHL this season. At only 24 years old, Soderstrom could look to revive his North American hockey career after an impressive season in Sweden. It is unlikely Soderstrom will join Rockford this season since he is not currently under contract, but he could make his IceHogs debut next season.

The immediate help comes from Raty. Rockford fans may know him in a negative light. On Mar. 1, while with the Roadrunners, Raty injured IceHogs defenseman Cavan Fitzgerald on an interference penalty. Fitzgerald, a team favorite and defensive partner of Levshunov, has been out since this injury.

Despite the possible bad blood, Raty is a fine addition to Rockford’s forward core. At 23 years old, the 2019 fifth-round pick has put up 19 points in 50 AHL goals this season with Tucson.

Final thoughts

The playoff run is on everyone’s mind, and it is an expectation for the team to make the playoffs. Interim Head Coach Mark Eaton expressed this after Friday’s game against Iowa.

“The calendar has turned to March … we’re making our playoff push … from here on out, every game, we’re going to expect our best,” Eaton said.

Playoff experience for this young roster is valuable beyond this season. When young players like Levshunov, Dach, Del Mastro, Allan, Commesso and Kevin Korchinski receive playoff experience early in their professional careers, that can translate to later success when the Blackhawks need them ready for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in future seasons.

This stretch run will define Rockford’s season. Although comfortably in a playoff spot, the regular season is far from over. Like Eaton said, every game for the rest of the season will require their best. The team is bolstered, the team is healthy and the team is ready. It is time for Rockford’s best hockey to be played.

Rockford’s very best will continue this Friday in Rockford against the Hartford Wolf Pack at 7 p.m. CDT.

The January timeline started not with a transaction, but with an injury. Forward Gavin Hayes, who has impressed many, fell to injury on Jan. 3. His timeline to return was announced at 8–12 weeks, a tough blow for the young prospect and the team.

The timeline of moves continued with an addition on Jan. 5. The IceHogs acquired defenseman Matteo Pietroniro. Pietroniro, a 26-year-old left-shot defenseman, last with the Toronto Marlies, was brought in to stabilize the bottom pairing of a constantly changing roster. 

Ten days later, the Chicago Blackhawks swapped left-handed defensemen with the Winnipeg Jets, trading Isaak Phillips for Dmitry Kuzmin. Kuzmin, a fellow countryman of Artyom Levshunov, plays a similar game to recently acquired Pietroniro.

Over a week later, on Jan. 23,  standout defenseman Ethan Del Mastro was recalled to Chicago, with the Blackhawks sending down Wyatt Kaiser in a corresponding move. Del Mastro proved to be a solid defensive defenseman while with Rockford this season, earning his time with the NHL team.

Finally, on Jan. 25, the Blackhawks recalled forward Landon Slaggert. Slaggert, another young, interesting forward prospect who spent this season in Rockford, had 10 goals and 15 assists in 39 games with the Hogs this season.

All of these moves created a hectic month for the Hogs. This timeline does not account for the movement of players like D.J. King, Ryan Gagnier and Kyle Maksimovich between Rockford and their ECHL affiliate, the Indy Fuel, throughout the month.

Regarding all of the call-ups, interim head coach Mark Eaton had some encouraging comments about his players.

“Things happen up top … guys are doing the right things down here and getting rewarded for it,” Eaton said.

“It’s good for those guys that have earned that opportunity, and for the guys down here, it’s an example of what it takes to get that call.”

Despite call-ups giving the team some bumps in the road, Eaton, who also serves as the assistant general manager of the Blackhawks, makes it clear that call-ups have been earned. His comments emphasized how important it is for other prospects to see success in the AHL being rewarded with trips to the NHL.

Losing players like Del Mastro and Slaggert last month, to go along with the losses of forwards like Frank Nazar and Colton Dach, has shown their side effects. Even with missing multiple games, Dach and Slaggert remain tied for third in points for Rockford, with Nazar still at fourth. 

The proof of these moves effects are showing on the ice. In the month of January, the Hogs went 3–6–2, including a five-game losing streak to end the month. Following their fifth straight loss on Jan. 31, Eaton talked about what has led to the recent struggles.

“I don’t think it’s been consistent enough … I’m not sure we’ve strung a complete game together where everyone’s going every line, getting goaltending all at once,” Eaton said.

“If we’re going to have success … we need everybody from start to finish … we can’t spot teams one goal before we wake up or only play 40 minutes.”

In their final game before the AHL All-Star break on Feb. 1, Rockford seemed to wake up and play 60-plus minutes in a highly emotional tilt against the Milwaukee Admirals, winning 5–4 in a shootout, entering the break on a much-needed high note.

It is not all doom and gloom in the Screw City. At fifth in the Central Division, the IceHogs would qualify for the AHL playoffs if the season ended today. With a nine-point lead over the sixth-place Iowa Wild, Rockford should find themselves in the playoffs despite the tough stretch. Come playoff time, Rockford could get reinforcements back from Chicago, which would give ample playoff opportunity for multiple Blackhawks prospects. 

Remaining on the positive side, Rockford sent two players to the AHL All-Star game in Coachella Valley. Forward Cole Guttman, who leads the Hogs in points, and defenseman Kevin Korchinski, who leads all Rockford defensemen in points, got the nod. Despite Guttman being considered a replacement for Nazar, he earned the right to represent the organization. With Korchinski getting the call, it should give Blackhawks fans hope in his continued development. After a difficult NHL season, Korchinski has thrived in Rockford, with his stint in Chicago earlier this season being proof that he has progressed well.

On Dec. 15, Rockford hosted the Milwaukee Admirals, where the IceHogs won 2–1 in an emotional contest that saw Ben Gaudreau earn his first AHL victory in a shootout.

The following game on Dec. 17 saw Rockford get blown out by the Wild on the road, 5–1.

Following a three-day break, the Hogs traveled north of the border to take on the Manitoba Moose. The IceHogs fell in the shootout, losing 2–1.

Remaining in Manitoba on Dec. 22, Rockford dominated in a 5–1 victory.

After the Christmas break, Rockford hosted Iowa on Dec. 27 in a 5–0 win.

Travelling to Iowa the following day for a rematch, Rockford continued their winning ways with a 4–2 victory that saw Paul Ludwinski score his first career AHL goal.

In their final game of 2024, the Hogs returned to Rockford to once again take on the Wild on Dec. 31. In their final of three straight matchups, the Hogs dropped a close one, 5–4.

Despite the strong showing, the Central Division continues to be a gauntlet, with Rockford’s 30 points only good enough for fifth in the division. The difference between the fifth-place IceHogs and second-place Texas Stars is five points.

After forward Frank Nazar was called up to Chicago on Dec. 13, it felt as though change would be a trend for the Hogs. The trend would continue on Dec. 19, when Drew Commesso was sent back to Rockford after Petr Mrazek was activated off injured reserve. The following day, defenseman Wyatt Kaiser was reassigned to Rockford, with Seth Jones returning from injured reserve on Dec. 21. On Dec. 29, Kaiser was brought back up to the NHL, with Kevin Korchinski being sent back to Rockford in a corresponding move. 

With the new year came new moves. On Jan. 2, standout prospect Colton Dach was called up to the Blackhawks. A force in Rockford, the power forward has scored 12 goals and 13 assists in 30 games for the Hogs this season. A running mate with Nazar while in Rockford, Dach will be put alongside Nazar on Chicago’s third line. This move should boost Nazar, who has struggled in his time with the Blackhawks this season, only managing one assist in nine games. In a corresponding move, forward Joey Anderson will report to Rockford.

Finally, it was announced today that forward Gavin Hayes will be sidelined for 8–12 weeks due to a shoulder sprain, a tough blow to a prospect showing improvement this season. In positive news, forward Andreas Athanasiou has been cleared to skate. This will allow Athanasiou to play on the Hogs for the first time since November.

Storylines

Levshunov’s shooting spree

Artyom Levshunov, the second overall pick in the 2024 Draft, leads all AHL defensemen in shots with 77. Despite the high shot volume, Levshunov has only two goals on the season, with a 2.6 shooting percentage. Although frustrating, Levshunov has created offense with seeing-eye shots that have led to rebounds, setting up Hogs goals. With more time, and some puck luck, Levshunov will start lighting the lamp.

Korchinski’s assists in return

Following his assignment to Rockford, Korchinski immediately brought his offensive ability to the Hogs. In their lost against Iowa on Dec. 31, Korchinski had a secondary and primary assist. His ability to see the offensive zone paid immediate dividends, and will continue to help Rockford in their playoff pursuit.

Since Dec. 15, the Hogs have received a balanced offensive attack from their forwards, with the contributions of a few worth pointing out. The first is Landon Slaggert.

Slaggert, a consistent linemate of Nazar, has continued his offensive production despite Nazar’s call-up. With six points in his last seven games, Slaggert looks to be a top producer with injuries and call-ups around him.

The next forward to highlight is Cole Guttman. Guttman, the current points leader on the team with 32, has three goals and six assists in his last seven games.

The final forward to highlight is veteran Gerry Mayhew. Mayhew, a forward brought in during the season, matched Slaggert in point productive in the last seven games with six points. 

These three forwards have shown Rockford’s recent balanced attack from its forward group.

Commesso becomes a brick wall

Despite giving up five goals on 31 shots on Dec. 31, Commesso has shown the growth Chicago has hoped for from their prospect goaltender. In three straight games following his return to the Hogs, Commesso stopped 81 out of 83 shots, with a 2–0–1 record, and a shutout on Dec. 27.

Final notes

At 13–13–4, it may be difficult to see the success Rockford has had. With a record hovering at .500, the Hogs have played competent, competitive hockey. Even with the coaching change, and with three top-six forwards either called up or injured, the Hogs continue to put themselves in the playoff picture. Reinforcements are on the way in the forms of Anderson and Athanasiou, who should fill in on the top six. Interim coach Mark Eaton has continued the development and success that Anders Sorensen began, and a new year should emphasize this team’s resolve. Rockford’s first game of the new year will take place tomorrow against the Chicago Wolves in Rosemont.

On Dec. 8, just three days after the coaching change, IceHogs defenseman Kevin Korchinski and goaltender Drew Commesso were called up to Chicago to replace injured Blackhawks veterans Alec Martinez and Petr Mrazek.

The final change was arguably the most impactful. On Dec. 13, the Hogs’ top scorer, Frank Nazar, was recalled to the NHL. With 11 goals and 24 points in 21 AHL games this season, Nazar earned his way to Chicago. 

In eight days, Rockford saw their head coach, one of their goalies, their most consistent defenseman and best forward moved away from the team. With most of these changes being made on a tough road trip, the play on the ice seemed to sputter in response. In the three games following the coaching change, the Hogs scored only one goal, being shut out twice. 

When asked how focus is being maintained in the locker room and on the ice during these changes, Eaton answered plainly.

“It’s hockey, just encourage the guys to play hockey … just because there’s change … nothing should change for them,” Eaton said following Saturday night’s game.

“They are all world-class players and that’s just the expectation from me and from each other.”

With these comments, the message is clear; even with change, even with some struggles, the players on the ice need to play their game.

Their game would have to be played during their Dec. 14 game against the Iowa Wild. The team’s first home game since all of the changes, it was also a special game for fans and the organization. Saturday’s matchup against Iowa would be a Teddy Bear Toss game. On the Hogs’ first goal, fans would shower the ice with teddy bears and stuffed animals, all being donated to charity following the game.

Coming into the contest, Rockford held a record of 8–11–3. Iowa sat just ahead of the IceHogs before the game, with a record of 9–12–1. It was a back-to-back matchup between these two clubs, with the Wild winning in Iowa on Wednesday 5–0.

First period

It was clear from the first period that these teams were well acquainted. An extensive amount of bumps and scuffles after whistles were seen in the first. The tension came to a head when Hogs defenseman Colin Felix dropped gloves with Wild forward Bradley Marek halfway through the period. 

Despite the impatience from the home crowd excited to toss their teddy bears, no scoring was seen in the physical first period. Tied 0–0 at the end of the period, Wild held the shot advantage 10–7 going into the second.

With ample anticipation for a goal, the Hogs did not make the fans wait. At 5:53 in the period, Felix activated the stuffed tsunami. His first AHL goal, Felix beat Wild goaltender Dylan Ferguson from a tough angle.

“(I) was honestly just trying to get a puck towards the net, and good things happen when you put the puck to the net,” Felix said of the goal.

Felix was assisted on the goal by Colton Dach and Austin Strand.

The Wild tied the game at the 9:40 mark of the second period. An odd-man rush, the puck bounced around until it landed on the stick of Hunter Haight, who shot it passed Mitchell Weeks.

The tie only lasted two minutes, with captain Brett Seney sniping a shot beyond Ferguson’s reach. This goal gave Strand his second assist of the game.

The scoring for Rockford continued with an incredible top-shelf shot by Dach from near the goal line.

“When you’re hemming them in … it creates chaos … ice wasn’t very good and kinda fumbled it and then just put a shot and it went in,” Dach said.

The Dach goal that gave the Hogs a 3–1 lead into the third was assisted by defensemen Isaak Phillips and Ethan Del Mastro.

The second period contained a lot of offense, with Rockford outscoring the Wild 3–1, and outshooting the Wild 16–12.

The third period started with some undisciplined play by the Wild. Just six seconds into the third, Wild forward Gavin Hain was penalized for tripping. Although the Hogs did not score on the ensuing power play, they were able to find twine on their second power play of the third. Following a too-many-men penalty on Iowa, Cole Guttman scored on the power play 5:13 into the third, assisted by Seney. With this goal, Guttman now has 50 professional goals in his career.

With the game at 4–1, and following a slashing penalty on Samuel Savoie with 5:01 to go in the contest, the Wild pulled Ferguson for an extra skater. This proved to be the final nail in the coffin, with Jalen Luypen scoring a shorthanded empty-net goal to give the game a final score of 5–1.

Their first win since the coaching change, the IceHogs hope to keep the positive momentum going. Players and staff understand that call-ups and coaching changes are part of the game, and the comments made by Eaton after the game emphasize that. Although contributors like Commesso, Korchinski and Nazar were removed from the roster, the show goes on.

When asked about the line changes after the game, Dach complimented the entire team for rolling four lines, giving special appreciation to linemate Gavin Hayes.

“He did a tremendous job tonight keeping pucks in, being heavy on the forecheck, making plays; he’s so strong on his stick and the way he carries the puck up through the neutral zone; it’s incredible to watch and it’s fun to be on the same line with him,” Dach said.

Dach was also pleased with the team’s ability to remain disciplined in the midst of a chippy contest.

“We did a really good job of staying disciplined and staying within the whistles and that’s the biggest part … stick within the whistles and play heavy when you can.” 

The Teddy Bear Toss was a massive success for Rockford. The IceHogs announced that 3,721 were collected, all being donated to the Rockford community.

When asked if he would keep a bear for himself, Felix joked, “I think they want me to jump into the pile of bears … we’ll see if I can take one.” He later stated that he would not take one for himself, clarifying that all of the stuffed animals were to go “to the kids.” 

Final thoughts

Losing multiple players and a head coach creates struggles, but it also creates opportunity. Rockford still has a team filled with veterans who understand their role. The team is also oozing with young talent that fans of both the IceHogs and the Blackhawks should pay close attention to. Prospects like Artyom Levshunov, Landon Slaggert, Paul Ludwinski and those already mentioned in this article will be tasked with greater responsibility. The opportunity is there for everyone, and the team remains composed and ready for the task in front of them.

Richardson’s coaching tenure

Brought to the organization in the summer of 2022, Richardson joined the Blackhawks with a decade of coaching experience split between the AHL and the NHL as an assistant. In just over two years as the head coach of Chicago, Richardson had a record of 49–102–13.

Meant to be a stabilizing force behind the bench for a rebuilding team, it became clear this season that expectations were not being met. In a press conference following the firing, Blackhawks General Manager Kyle Davidson stated, “I think we have taken some nice steps, but we’re in last place.” This, along with concerns about Connor Bedard’s development, brought an end to Richardson’s time with Chicago.

Sorensen’s tenure begins

Sorensen has been a part of the Blackhawks organization since 2014. Spending his first five years with the organization as a development coach, Sorensen became an assistant coach for the IceHogs before the 2019–20 season. He later became the head coach of the team on an interim basis during the 2021–22 season, officially taking the reigns as head coach the following season.

When asked why he picked Sorensen over Blackhawks assistant coach Derek King, Davidson stated, “That’s no slight to Kinger. It’s just moreso Anders is a new face, new voice, new ideas. It was just something new. We’ve gone down that road with Kinger before, and I think there could be some fear of him just being the de facto ‘Interim Guy.'”

What this means for the Blackhawks

Firing Richardson and hiring Sorensen indicates a few things for the NHL club. The first is that being a last-place team is unacceptable with the current roster. Although nowhere near a playoff squad, playing uninspired hockey night after night when positive strides were expected put Davidson in an untenable position. With Sorensen and his success at the AHL level, the hope is that improvements can be made throughout the rest of the season.

Another indication by this move is that it allows Chicago to get an extended look at Sorensen without having to commit to him beyond this season. The optimistic view is that he could become Chicago’s Jon Cooper or Mike Sullivan. Perhaps Chicago could find long-term success with the coach who was responsible for the development of multiple prospects in the AHL. If he does not succeed, the Blackhawks can wash their hands of it, send Sorensen back to Rockford and begin a head coach search in the 2025 offseason.

Eaton takes over in Rockford

The last significant change to take place was making Eaton, the current assistant general manager of the Blackhawks, the interim head coach of the IceHogs. Eaton had an extensive NHL career and has had nearly a decade of experience in the Blackhawks front office.

A left-handed defenseman, Eaton was known as a shot-blocking, bottom-pair defenseman throughout his professional career. 

Eaton signed his first professional contract in 1998 as an undrafted free agent to the Philadelphia Flyers. After spending the 1999–00 season with Philadelphia, he was traded to the Nashville Predators before the following season for a third-round pick in 2001. With that pick, the Flyers went on to select Blackhawks legend Patrick Sharp. 

Following a stint with Nashville from 2000 to 2006, he signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins as an unrestricted free agent. His first two seasons with Pittsburgh was plagued with injury, but he shined in the 2009 playoffs, scoring four goals during the Penguins’ Stanley Cup championship run. 

Once the 2009–10 season ended, Eaton signed with the New York Islanders. After two seasons on Long Island, Eaton was signed to a professional tryout with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. When released from his tryout, Eaton signed back with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he finished out the 2012–13 season. He retired following the season. 

Eaton enjoyed a 13-year career, finishing with 21 goals and 64 assists in 650 NHL games.

Eaton’s executive career

Like Sorensen, Eaton joined the Blackhawks organization before the 2014–15 season, starting as a development coach at the NHL level. Following two years in this role, Eaton was promoted to director of player development, a role he held until the 2019–20 season.

After four years as director of player development, Eaton was named the assistant general manager of the Blackhawks starting in the 2020–21 season, a position he has held until being named interim head coach of the IceHogs yesterday.

What this means for the IceHogs

With a current record of 8–9–2, Rockford sits in fourth place in the AHL’s Central Division and expect to make the playoffs this season. Along with playoff aspirations, the continued development of prospects like Frank Nazar and Artyom Levshunov is a top priority. With Sorensen’s staff unchanged, Mark should step in and continue the positive strides made this season. 

The question remains of who will coach this young IceHogs team next season. That answer may have to wait until the offseason. For now, Eaton has the chance to coach multiple players who he helped draft into the organization.

BMO Center, first opened in 1981, has seen many updates in its existence, but none more dramatic than the upgrades given to the center beginning in the fall of 2023. The Chicago Blackhawks, who have owned the IceHogs since 2021, partnered with the City of Rockford, the Rockford Area Venues and Entertainment Authority and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to invest $23 million to reinvent the arena. 

The renovations, finished before the season started, show how much value the Blackhawks put into their AHL affiliate. A new video scoreboard, upgraded 100-level seats and entirely new 200-level seats enhance the experience for fans. The contrast between the all-black seats and the ice draws focus directly to the action. The arena has become state of the art, and provides fans with the best the AHL has to offer.

Since buying the Hogs in 2021, the connection between the Blackhawks and their AHL affiliate has been emphasized extensively. On the 200-level concourse, there is an entire wall dedicated to the history of the IceHogs and the NHL players who have come from Rockford, many of whom became Blackhawks. 

The most evident connection can be seen in the rafters. In 2023, Blackhawks and IceHogs goaltender Corey Crawford had his No. 29 retired by Rockford, becoming the first and only player to have his number retired by the IceHogs. With these connections, the message becomes clear: the road to the United Center runs through BMO Center. The Blackhawks clearly value the importance of their AHL affiliate to their success, and want every fan who enters the arena to know that.

The young IceHogs get ready for games the same way many professional teams do. Before getting into gear, they flock to the hallway, juggling a soccer ball between themselves to work on hand-eye coordination and balance. Others, like Frank Nazar, can be seen bouncing a tennis ball off the wall with their stick to get ready. Players were energetic, ready to play their first game in nearly a week.

Roughly an hour before puck drop, as the IceHogs faithful begin to fill up the BMO Center, the Rockford players took to the ice to continue warmups. The Friday night crowd was immense. That night, Rockford ran a promotion where the first 1,500 fans received a hat created by a local artist. The IceHogs also provided the fans with $2 beers, a promotion run during every Friday home game. Warmups were the standard procedure, with players on both sides getting a feel for the ice before the contest began. As players of both teams began to head back into their locker rooms, Artyom Levshunov remained on the ice. Levshunov stayed on the ice longer than any player on either side before the game, continuing to work on his shot and his skating before finally leaving the ice.

First period 

Rockford, wearing their Steel City alternate uniforms, came out strong against the Wolves. Dominating possession and keeping Chicago on its heels, The Hogs took an early lead on a goal by Colton Dach, set up by team point leader Nazar. 

The lead did not last long. Wolves forward Tyson Jost scored 25 seconds later to tie the contest. 

Later in the frame, on a power play following a cross-check by Jost, Nazar ripped one by the Wolves’ goaltender to gave Rockford a 2–1 lead at the midway point that would hold for the rest of the period.

Second period

The game grinded to a physical halt in the second period. No goals were scored, but plenty of action was seen. Four total penalties were assessed, two for both squads, the most intense penalty being given to Chicago winger Juha Jaaska. After Austin Strand leveled Wolves defenseman Domenick Fensore in the Hogs’ zone, Jaaska cross-checked Strand, leading to a Rockford power play. The hit by Strand caused Fensore to leave immediately for the locker room. 

Despite the multiple penalties, neither side could score a goal, thanks to the incredible work in net. Rockford goalie Drew Commesso made some impressive saves during the period, leaving the score at 2–1 going into the third period.

Third period

The story for Rockford flipped upside down in the final period. It became clear that Rockford could not keep up with the speed of Chicago, and it led to odd-man rushes for the Wolves. On a Hogs power play, Chicago was able to take advantage of an overly aggressive unit to fly down the ice for a shorthanded goal, tying the game. The IceHogs were able to recover on the same power play, with Levshunov having his best shift of the season, setting up Landon Slaggert for the power play goal. 

With a 3–2 lead and 12 minutes to go, it looked like Rockford could hang on for the win. Unfortunately, the wheels began to fall off halfway through the period. The Wolves tied it just before the 10-minute mark. With five minutes to go, Austin Wagner skated past Ethan Del Mastro, who was stuck on his heels and could not recover in time. Finally, after the IceHogs pulled their goalie with two minutes to go, the Wolves found the empty net, completing the comeback with three unanswered goals to win 5–3.

It is never fun to watch a team run out of gas at the end of a game. Unfortunately, this was the case for Rockford against the Wolves. When playing a team with experience like Chicago, mistakes will lead to odd-man rushes, and the Wolves had many, scoring on some. 

Despite the mistakes, the high-end prospects who litter this roster shined the most. Levshunov had his best professional game. He skated with confidence, taking the puck from the defensive zone to the offensive zone by himself, leading the rush as a defenseman. He was bold enough to follow the puck behind the opposing net, while aware enough to know when to retreat and fill in at the offensive blue line. His assist on Slaggert’s power play goal was the cherry on top of his performance.

What has been said about Nazar is even more true in person. He is the best player on the ice every time he steps on it, and a two-point night is proof of it. He is trusted on both the power play and penalty kill, and his two-way style of play should translate well when he is eventually called up, though Blackhawk fans need to understand there is no rush to do so.

To go along with the play from talented prospects, there are positive notes to take from the loss. This Rockford squad showed discipline compared to what is considered a veteran group on the other side. The Hogs committed three penalties, compared to six committed by the Wolves. When on the power play, Rockford scored twice. When penalized, the Hogs remained perfect on the kill. This young team is disciplined beyond its years and should continue to improve as the season goes on.

It would only be right to share observations made away from the ice. The IceHogs faithful are one of the most passionate fan bases in the entire AHL. The packed crowd and their cowbells rattled eardrums throughout the game. Fans young and old cheered intensely for their baby Blackhawks. From the arena upgrades to the crowd atmosphere, an IceHogs game should be on any Hawks fan’s wishlist.

From the arena to the atmosphere to the prospects to the play on the ice, the Rockford IceHogs deserve attention. BMO Center provides fans of the IceHogs a professional experience tailored to them. The fingerprints of the Hawks are everywhere, and it is designed that way. The Blackhawks organization values Rockford immensely, and trusts them with their future. Three recent first-round picks are in the care of the Hogs, and their development deserves to be seen by fans in Rockford. 

The IceHogs themselves play a defensive-minded, disciplined game, with room for young players to grow and make mistakes. The roster is filled to the brim with recent Blackhawks draft picks. These prospects will learn the hard way many times, and head coach Anders Sorenson knows this. If the success of a former prospect like Alex Vlasic is any indication, Sorenson can form competent NHLers out of these current prospects. The game against the Wolves was a microcosm of this possibility. Mistakes were made, which led to a tough loss, but the talent is there. Lessons will be learned the hard way, but they are being learned. The promise of a better future for the Blackhawks is being paved by the learning being done in Rockford.

The surge in production from the Hogs is not a random coincidence; it is the result of improved play across the board. 

Avoiding the penalty box

Fourteen games into the season, Rockford has successfully avoided the penalty box. With only 179 penalty minutes, the Hogs have the second-fewest penalty minutes in the Central Division, trailing only the aforementioned Wolves. Incredible discipline is being shown by one of the youngest teams in the AHL, and it is fueling the recent success of the team.

Scoring is spreading out

At the time of the previous Icehogs article, scoring was limited to Nazar. Although Nazar still leads the team in goals and assists, scoring is starting to spread to the rest of the roster. The most evident improvement is coming from Cole Guttman. With six goals and 11 points on the season, Guttman is now second on the team in goals and tied for second in points with Colton Dach. Along with Guttman, Brett Seney has started to fill up the scoresheet, now with nine points in 15 games. The final player to mention in his scoring improvements is Landon Slaggert. Although only lighting the lamp once this season, he is currently tied for second in assists on Rockford with seven. As the season goes on, the Hogs hope the scoring continues to come from multiple players to allow the team to be a scoring threat with every line.
