]]> The Colorado Eagles came into tonight desperately needing two points after losing the last three games in a row. Last night’s contest against the Texas Stars was far from their best showing as they fell 5–3 and went scoreless in three chances on the power play. Currently, the Eagles sit in fourth place in the Pacific Division, trailing Ontario by just two points. If Colorado can have a solid rest of the road trip, they could jump into third, if not second place in the division. This would give the Eagles an easier opponent with Abbotsford or Bakersfield. With players like Jason Polin heating up, this could get done. Here are the takeaways from the 3–2 victory over the Stars tonight.

Takeaways

— The Eagles finally broke a 0 for 13 stretch on the power play. During two of the three games which this took place, Colorado could only score short handed goals against Abbotsford. They finally broke through with some even strength goals last night, but the overwhelming force of the Stars was too much.

— Jason Polin has heated up at the right time. With two goals in the last two nights, Polin has started the scoring on both nights against the Stars. With all the injuries and call-ups, Polin, a Hobey Baker Finalist last season, is expected to step up. Tanner Kero is out with an injury and Jean-Luc Foudy is with the Colorado Avalanche, so there is a sizeable gap in offensive production. Not to mention, Oskar Olausson will be out for the year. Polin has been showing more confidence with every passing game, even more so after his first call up to the Avalanche in January.

— Keaton Middleton has quietly been having a career year. Scoring the third goal of the night and what turned out to be the game winning goal, he is one shy of his career best. Middleton set the career high in his first year with the San Jose Barracuda in 2018-19. Since Middleton has joined the Avalanche organization, he has become a steadfast leader on the blue line for the Eagles. Players have said that he is one of the most vocal players on the ice and it shows in how he directs traffic.

Conclusion

The Eagles clearly needed a boost in the right direction tonight. They got it from every aspect on the ice, from special teams to goaltending. If it weren’t for Ivan Prosvetov, the Eagles wouldn’t have won this game. He saved 29 of 31 shots on goal and the Stars threw everything they could at him. Colorado will continue their road trip on Saturday against the Henderson Silver Knights in another must win for important points.

The Stars, despite being 23rd in the league, have the highest rank on the power play with a 22.7% success rate. The Eagles sit at 30th with 16.3%.

First period

Fortunately, the Colorado Eagles had their first power play only five minutes into the first frame. However, the 16.3% could not activate. Only seconds into the power play, the Stars got a breakaway chance. Nothing came of that chance.

Jason Polin, from the Eagles, scored tonight’s first goal of the game late in the first period. He put one on the far side of Stars rookie goaltender, Ben Kraws.

This was Polin’s third goal of the season and his first goal since January 30 against the Ontario Reign. Fredrik Olofsson assisted Polin (5) and Sam Malinski (16) on the play.

Almost two minutes later, the Stars responded. Fredrik Karlstrom notched his twentieth goal of the season against Arvid Holm. Karlstrom has accumulated 43 points on the season, placing him fifth among the Stars. Matej Blumel assisted him (29) and Michael Karow (13).

The first ended with shots in favor of the Eagles, 12–9.

Second period

Halfway through the second, the Stars pull ahead with a goal from Nicholas Caamano. This marks his tenth of the season. Karow, who notches his second assist of the night, and Kyle McDonald (11), assisted him.

Peter Holland tied the game at two with help from Corey Schueneman and Olofsson.

The Eagles got two separate power plays but could pull nothing off. They finished the second, 0–3 on the power play and 1–0 on the penalty kill.

Third period

Caamano lit the lamp early in the third. He scored his second with assists from Matthew Seminoff (11) and Luke Krys (1).

The Eagles headed to the box for another penalty. This season, the Eagles have successfully killed penalties with a rate of 85.2% and are ranked second in the league.

With a goal scored by Jack Ahcan, the game became tied for the third time at three. Brad Hunt (31) and D.J. Busdeker (5) both got credit for assists on Ahcan’s goal.

With 4:28 left, Aamodt headed to the box for a slashing penalty, and this is where the momentum shifted. Caamano scored his third goal of the night from Alex Petrovic (16) and Karow (15).

Hoping to tie the game for the fourth time, the team pulled Holm, and the Stars seized an opportunity on an empty net. Caamano took it and tallied his fourth goal.

Takeaways

With 27 shots on goal tonight, the Eagles look to play the Stars once more tomorrow at 6 p.m. Tonight’s game started a six-game road trip for the Eagles where they’re looking to pickup points before playoffs.

]]> LOVELAND, Colo. — After the loss to the Texas Stars on Friday night, the Colorado Eagles had something to prove on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles fizzled out after the first period on Friday, so it was time to see if they could correct what they learned and play the full 60 minutes. Saturday would be the first time all season that Arvid Holm would see action in back-to-back nights. This was going to be a genuine test for the new goaltender. Matthew Stienburg and Ryan Sandelin both were healthy scratches, bringing defenseman Wyatt Aamodt up as a winger.

“It’s something that we’ve done a couple of times this year,” coach Aaron Schneekloth said about Aamodt. “”The depth we have on our back end is probably, I would say up there with anyone else in the league. And we don’t want those guys sitting around too much. We want to keep them all involved and engaged because we know at some point, whether it’s Avs or we have injuries, we want to keep guys engaged and keep their game going. So we felt today it was a wonderful opportunity to get Nate (Clurman) back in the lineup and put ammo on presents. He does an outstanding job.”

Quick hits

  • The Eagles kept up the offensive pressure the entire game rather than just the first period. The fourth line dominated their shifts (Aamodt, Ondrej Pavel and Dalton Smith), by being physical the entire shift and forcing the play into the crease and then the puck up to the blue line for a shot. Pavel was rewarded with his first official pro goal because of the hard work.

  • The penalty kill suffered by allowing two goals in three chances for the Stars. Matthew Stienburg being a scratch may have played a part. He is a tremendous asset to the penalty kill for the Eagles. The Stars’ power play on the road is highly successful at 26.9%.
  • The power play for the Eagles continued to struggle in their two chances on Saturday. They connected right after the power play expired, scoring an even strength goal. Colorado sits at a measly 16.7% success rate for the season so far.
  • Sam Malinski was on fire on Saturday, providing three assists to help in the victory. It was a career high for one game for Malinski, surpassing his multiple games where he had two points.

The Eagles will try to bring the momentum into next weekend with the 6-3 win on Saturday over the Stars when they will meet the Iowa Wild at home. The Wild are 6–8–1–1 and have one of the best goalies in the AHL in Jesper Wallstedt. Justus Annunen’s availability is uncertain because of a lower body injury.
