]]> Valeri Nichushkin will once again be unavailable to the Colorado Avalanche during the playoffs. Nichushkin has entered Stage 3 of the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. Unfortunately, Valeri Nichushkin will face a suspension without pay by the NHL for a minimum of six months, and then he can apply for reinstatement. The soonest that could be would be November 13, 2024.

Last year

Last season, as the Avalanche took on the Seattle Kraken, Nichushkin had an incident in his hotel room in Seattle. This incident led to him leaving the team for the rest of the playoffs as the Avalanche were eliminated. There were rumors that alcohol and drugs were involved, especially with the condition of the woman that was found in the hotel.

Enters program

The Russian forward would later return to the team right before training camp began. Nichushkin would start having himself a career season and then on February 26, he entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. He would remain away from the team for 40 days as the Avalanche struggled to put offense together.

ESPN confirmed during the pregame program that Nichushkin had failed a drug test. It is unclear what that “drug” was.

Conclusion

This will be the third time that he has left the team for reasons other than injury in less than 12 months. These days, it is not wrong to seek help for issues that he is having, be it mental or otherwise. The problem that he is having is hurting the team and now the Avalanche management needs to consider this. Should Nichushkin stick around? I know some fans will say to keep him and some will say to kick him to the curb.

One thing is for sure, if he violates his treatment plan again, there may not be any coming back. Nichushkin now risks a one year suspension and a ban from the NHL.

]]> Valeri Nichushkin has returned to the Colorado Avalanche from the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance program. After being in the program for 40 days for an unknown reason, Nichushkin returned to practice. He will provide a much needed boat to the struggling Avalanche offense once he returns to game action. The Russian was on a bit of a fiery streak before leaving the team, scoring ten points in ten games.

Game Action

It is not clear when the forward will return to game action, but Samuel Girard may give us an idea. Head coach Jared Bednar treated Girard as if he was returning from an injury. On December 22nd, Girard was given the green light to rejoin the team, and he made his first appearance in a game just nine days after. If the same holds true for Nichushkin, we could see a return against Chicago or Detroit next week.

Struggles

The Avalanche have been struggling without the power forward in the lineup. With Nichushkin in the lineup, the Avalanche are 26–11–3, without him they are just 9–8–2. Nichushkin brings something that many players on the team cannot, a two-way game. He will pressure the opposing team on defense to steal the puck. He will then drive to the net like an unstoppable train on its tracks, earning the nickname “Choo Choo” from fans. The power play even has seen a difference as well. Ranked eighth before Nichushkin’s departure, it now ranks 19th since.

Conclusion

With the injection of offense and defense that Nichushkin will provide, Colorado may not have to shop nearly as much next week at the deadline. His 42 points in 40 games were helping the Avalanche cruise to easy victories, or giving them the confidence to do it. If he can have the same boost in play that Girard had after his return, the man will be someone to fear on ice. This will for sure give the Avalanche some confidence by moving forward down the stretch.

The announcement came today that Colorado Avalanche forward Valeri Nichushkin has entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. Nichushkin has entered the program for an unknown reason at this time. He is now the second player from the Avalanche to enter the program this season. Nichushkin will be away from the team indefinateley. Earlier this season, Samuel Girard entered the program for depression and alcohol abuse. Since Girard’s return, there has been a noticeable difference in the quality of his playing.

His past

Last season in April, Nichushkin was involved in an incident at the team hotel before game three of the first round. A woman, who was not his spouse, was discovered intoxicated in his room that morning. She had to be treated by the team doctor and eventually by paramedics at the scene.

Nichushkin was later seen leaving Seattle with team security at the airport. He stayed away from the team for the remaining playoffs. Nichushkin would stay to himself mostly for the summer training in Russia.

The release of the body cam footage of the Seattle incident would unveil more details. Here is a very detailed breakdown from local NBC report Steve Steager:

Nichushkin has been highly consistent for the Avalanche this season. After missing a good portion of last season from foot and ankle surgeries, he is fully healthy. He has been on pace for career year so far with his 22 goals and 20 assists. Nichushkin hardly ever goes more than one game in the lineup without adding a point to his tally. His forechecking style is aggressive and something that a lot of teams cannot handle, forcing a lot of turnovers by the opposing team.

If he believes entering the program is necessary, good for him. The Avalanche will find a way, as they did without Girard. If Nichushkin improves as both a person and player, this move will benefit.

]]> Today, just six days before training camp will start, Valeri Nichushkin has arrived in Denver. This is the first time that we have seen him with the team since his departure after game two of the first-round in the playoffs. Once Nichushkin was on the ice, other players were laughing and chatting with the Russian. It seems (at least publicly) that the team has moved on. Fans are a mixed bag of emotions. Some want him off the team, while some recognize that the incident was a personal matter and have moved on. 

On the morning of April 22nd, the day of game three against the Seattle Kraken, Nichushkin was involved in an incident at the team hotel. They found a woman in his room intoxicated and brought to the lobby for treatment. The Colorado Avalanche team doctor treated the unknown woman as well, and the head of security made a statement to the local police. Nichushkin left the hotel in a rush, and they flew him back to Denver immediately from the airport. All coach Jared Bednar would tell the media is “Val has left the team for personal reasons.” He would not comment further than that. 

 

Some are blaming Nichushkin for the first-round elimination with his PR distraction. It was one thing that the players did not need on their minds going into an important game. Later in the series, the suspension of Cale Makar certainly did not help either. Had the Avalanche had Nichushkin, they would have been able to push their forecheck a lot more against Seattle. It was something that they lacked from game three forward. 

The NHL had investigated the incident involving Nichushkin and had already cleared him of all wrongdoing. It was just a matter of when he would show up. Last season, he showed up at training camp just one day prior because of a foot injury suffered in the Stanley Cup Finals. From the atmosphere today, the team looks as though they have moved on. 

I am sure things will be awkward at the beginning of the season. That awkwardness will pass, especially if Nichushkin is playing well. The only thing that we can do is wait to see how this plays out if the team is truly moving on from the incident or not.
