New Blackhawk Deadline Rumors

And away we go, rumor season is definitely kicking in to a higher (anyway) gear:

BROADLY

It appears the Hawks are following the Anthony Duclair-Richard Panik model in more than one set of trade discussions: a value for value deal where each GM hopes a change of scenery/coaching/role will help the player they are acquiring. A couple of these deals appear to potentially include Connor Murphy, who one source described to me last night as “struggling” (from the team’s perspective).

Over the last 72 hours, I have heard about the Hawks having several discussions with three teams, about multiple players. Across the board:

OTTAWA

One potential Murphy deal I heard about was with the Senators, possibly involving the Hawks acquiring C Zack Smith (two separate sources).

Before everyone goes off the rails, breaking down a Smith-Murphy deal, a couple of caveats. I was told by one source, the Hawks and Sens are talking about a lot of players right now, and Smith is only one.

At -25 for the year, Zack Smith is not the sexiest acquisition. But none of the names I’m hearing are. It’s more about potentially upgrading a spot in the lineup. Smith does a couple of things consistently well: grind and win faceoffs. Which the Hawks probably need more of, especially faceoff wins.

Speaking of Hawk trade discussions no one will get too terribly excited about . . .

THE RANGERS

Another potential destination for Murphy, with the possible return of defenseman Brendan Smith. I was told “no deal is imminent, but there have been discussions.”

FINALLY, MONTREAL

No news there from my last report. But the teams have been talking about numerous players.

THE COMMON THREAD?

There may be more discussions, and kinds of discussions, going on with more teams, but the ones I’ve heard about seem to be following a very specific pattern: Eastern Conference teams who, like the Hawks, have underperformed and may be looking for a chemistry change at the deadline.

That said, none of these teams are driven right now by the urgency of playoff needs, and some of these conversations—I was told—may not lead anywhere right now, but could resume at the end of the season.

What do you think, discuss below (remember, I’m just the messenger).

    Apparently, all goalies are Vikings

Hawks and Zack Smith seems to be out there every year and I think he would fit nicely on the third or fourth line. Good size and faceoffs as you mentioned.

IF the acquire Smith, I would like to see them get rid of Anisimov. Have Smith and Kampf as your bottom 2 centers. Still need a 2nd line center, but AA is not it.

Also would not like a Brendan Smith or Murphy trade. Smith is already 29, has four years left on his deal. The last thing the Hawks need to do is get older with average players

    thoughts?

I would rather get future considerations back for Murphy then Brendan Smith. At least then we have a roster spot and cap room instead of dead weight.

I’ve heard Zach Smith’s name out there are as well. He would be a solid addition, although fans might not love a $3.2M 3rd line C, Lord knows some had issues with Kruger for that price point in that role.

Acquiring someone like Smith makes sense from something I’ve been hearing for a while – that the Hawks have been looking to add more “character” players.

Another one to keep an eye on is Cody Ceci, the vibe is that Ottawa might not want to pay the kid.  24-years old, RHD, playing 22 mins/game, 120 blocks… another high character.

Just my opinion but I’d pass on Brendan Smith.

    Hey John,

thanks for keeping us updated as always.

So now the great Connor Murphy may be on the move.  And when Chayka trades Hammer for a first and a prospect to say I don’t know The Bolts – how dumb will Bowman look then?

Stan’s moves this year alone should be enough to get him canned:

Panarin – who leads the Jackets in points for Saad who sadly hasn’t done a lot this year – much less jumpstart 19’s game.

And of course Hammer for a 3rd pairing guy.

Both moves done in part for cost control not necessarily for the betterment of the hockey team.  Since Stan backed himself into a corner with the overpays and nmc’s he was left with these moves – change for the sake of change after his big speech last spring.

And let’s not forget the other key piece in the Panarin trade…Forsberg.  As I’ve mentioned several times now – where was the plan for a solid backup goalie when you’d weakened the defense…Crawford of course covers up a lot of mistakes and was having an Vezina type season, but as he has in the last two seasons he went down and that’s when the floodgates opened.

The Hawks were left with a kid who played a handful of games in Forsberg and a 32 year old rookie in Glass.  The defense with Keith/Seabs who have a lot of miles on them and a mostly AHL type defense…and how’s that worked out?

These minor moves Bowman will make – I can’t see them having a real effect on improving the roster unless of course you’re talking about landing the next Tomas Jurco…no really.

Brendan Smith sucks worse than Murphy and is older.  HARD pass.  Smith is also 30 years old with term left.  Hard Pass.  Bowman sucks.

Agreed, hes a slug, pushing 30, and makes too much money.   Where are the Anisimov rumors?? He has been worthless most of the season, playing bottom six minutes, pushing 30, and making almost $5mil!

I think Anisimov has been fine. B-

    JJ,

Hearing anything about off ice personnel? i’m of the opinion that it’s more than time to dump Bowman, Q and HIS assistances, and possibly McDonut. Really don’t need marketing interfering with hockey decisions. You yourself have alluded to that over the years here. This team needs to hit the reset button hard. NO sacred cows! Period. If i’m Rocky, i load up that proverbial dump truck, back it up to the ravine and hit the dump lever, and see who(if anyone other than Kaner) has “it” too hang on.

Disappointed to hear they’re shopping Murphy. I think he could be a solid piece going forward, but whatever. I’m not in the room making the decisions.

I think it would be a dumb move. Maybe see how things shake out under Ulf first. He’s got a lot of potential and hasnt looked bad to my eyes.

Murphy is never going to be great, but he brings effort all the time. I’m not sure he got a fair shake this year, not sure the coach isn’t playing games with him being the return for Hammer. I’ll take a guy who tries hard and takes direction so long as he can be played on the appropriate side paired up with the right partner.

Well the Hawks replaced Krueger’s 3.3M cap hit with an 10.4M cap hit. Toews right now is an overpaid 3rd line center and has been for 2 years. (last night’s game not withstanding) SO if anything the Hawks need a 1st line center or a pick to turn into a 1C more than they need a 1D/2D right now as its unlikely that the old #19 will ever return to any semblance of his former self. see V.
