The Chicago Blackhawks played their final game of the Eastern Canada road trip against the Ottawa Senators. The Hawks were coming in off a loss to the Montreal Canadiens 4-1. This was fourth straight game without Connor Bedard.

First period

Early in the first period, it appeared that Tim Stutzle scored the game’s first goal. However, after a coach’s challenge, it was ruled that Arvid Sorderblom was interfered with.

Less than four minutes later, Tyler Kleven scored the game’s first goal. However, this goal was mired in controversey because upon review, it appeared that Brady Tkachuk interfered with Soderblom. The Blackhawks challenged the call only to have the goal upheld by the officials.

The first period ended with the Ottawa up 1-0.

Second period

The second period was pure chaos. Frank Nazar of the Blackhawks left the game after taking a puck in the mouth, he would not return.

With Nazar out, the Hawks needed production from other forwards and they got it Ilya Mikheyev. Wyatt Kaiser hit a streaking Mikheyev for the Hawks’ first goal of the game.

What a stretch pass by Wyatt Kaiser, who finds Ilya Mikheyev for his 5th goal of the season. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/OcjFS1uYCV

After the Mikheyev goal, there was another bizarre goalie interference call and review.

This was an all-timer https://t.co/Pso2NKIt5n

So after all the calls, the game remained tied at 1.

With the game STILL tied, Stutzle capitalized on a costly turnover for Teuvo Teravainen for a shorthanded goal. Ottawa regained the lead 2-1.

Less than two minutes later, Andre Burakovsky tied the game up for the Hawks with a knuckle puck on the power play.

Four minutes after the Burakovsky goal, the Senators retook the lead with a goal from Tkachuk. The Hawks answered with another Mikheyev goal.

The wild second period ended with the score tied at 3-3.

Third period

Once again, the Blackhawks allowed an early third period goal, this time it was David Perron cashing in on the power play. Later in the period, Perron scored his second goal of the game to put the Senators up 5-3.

Nick Lardis cut the lead in half with his first NHL goal. This is Lardis’ fourth NHL game.

Ottawa sealed the victory with a goal from Fabian Zetterlund. The Hawks lost 6-4.

Analysis

After the game, it was announced by Jeff Blashill that Nazar will be out at least four weeks. This is a crushing blow to the already-vulnerable Blackhawks. Since losing Bedard, the Hawks have lost four in a row. The Hawks should be expected to call up another forward from Rockford before their next game.

While Nazar was struggling offensively, he had scored against Montreal and looked to be on the verge of breaking out. With Nazar down, forwards like Mikheyev need to step up. Mikheyev, like Nazar, had not scored a goal in 20 games before his breakout performance today. Mikheyev is going to need to score more often for the foreseeable future.

Lardis is also going to be relied upon to help with the scoring issues. Lardis notched his first NHL goal in today’s contest. It was his first goal in four NHL games. Lardis is known for being a pure goal scorer after putting up 71 goals in the OHL last season.

In net, Soderblom surrendered six goals in the loss. He has now allowed three or more goals in his last six starts. To make matters worse, the Blackhawks are in a bit of a goalie log jam. While Soderblom has struggled, there is no plan to replace him with Drew Commesso. The reason being that Commesso needs to continue to develop and play, while Soderblom plays so sparingly. In addition to Commesso, the Rockford IceHogs must find minutes for Laurent Brossoit and Stanislav Berezhnoy. Although, Berezhnoy could be sent to the Indy Fuel of the ECHL to get minutes, too. The log jam should open up when Brossoit is eventually dealt away.

The Hawks returned home on Tuesday to take on the Philadelphia Flyers at 8 p.m. CST on TNT.

Frank Nazar scored 48 seconds into overtime to give the visiting Chicago Blackhawks a 4–3 victory at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa. The goal gave Nazar a three-game goal streak to close the season as the quick skating forward continue to impress Connor Bedard.

“He’s been unbelievable, like, how much better he’s getting every game,” Bedard said of Nazar. “Just the way he uses his speed, and he thinks the game so well. Guys get pushed back so much when he’s out there. His growth has been remarkable in the last, I’d say, like, 20 games.”

The Blackhawks finished the season on a 4–1–1 streak and a 25–46–11 over 82 games, which is a nine-point improvement over the 2023–24 season.

Bedard added two goals and an assist in Ottawa, giving the 19-year-old phenom 23 goals and 44 assists on the season. The second-youngest player in the league made it through his sophomore campaign playing all 82 games and will be a better leader down the road for having lived through it.

First period

Bedard got the party started at the 1:08 mark of the first period when former Blackhawks goaltender Anton Forsberg could not stop the beautiful wrist shot from Bedard for his 22nd goal of the season, assisted by Ryan Donato and Kevin Korchinski.

Chicago would beat Forsberg again for the 2–0 start when Joe Veleno fired a snap shot behind the struggling 31-year-old Swedish goaltender. The goal, Veleno’s eighth of the season, was assisted by Oliver Moore and Nick Foligno.

Ottawa would answer back less than a minute later when Nick Cousins beat Chicago goaltender Spencer Knight for his sixth goal of the season.

Second period

Chicago would surrender the lead on the penalty kill when defenseman Thomas Chabot fired home his ninth goal of the season after a Bedard hooking penalty a few short seconds earlier.

With the score tied 2–2, Bedard avenged his penalty with a power-play goal of his own to give the visitors the 3–2 lead at the 2:24 mark of the middle frame. Bedard’s 23rd goal of the season was assisted by Tyler Bertuzzi and Sam Rinzel.

Ottawa would finish off all the scoring in regulation at the 15:06 mark of the period when winger Drake Batherson scored his 24th goal of the season to tie the game at 3–3.

Third period

Neither team could grab a lead in the third period, giving Hawks fans some free hockey in the final game of the season.

Overtime

Nazar lit the lamp for the game-winning goal less than a minute into the extra frame with a one-timer from Bedard. The goal, Nazar’s 12th of the season, was assisted by Bedard. While he did not get an assist on the play, Rinzel deserves kudos on the play, having forced Tim Stutzle to turn over the puck to start the Hawks’ transition. Rinzel also drove the net on the play to open the drop-pass lane for Nazar’s tally.

Analysis

Finishing off the season on a 4–1–1 mark was exactly what the young Blackhawks needed. The young core showed flashes of excellence based around their speed and skill. General Manager Kyle Davidson had a vision of speed and the fans got a quick glimpse of it late in the season.

Bedard’s sophomore season is over and the 19-year-old had his ups and downs just like any youngster would at that stage in his career. Not many players can have 150 games of NHL experience before they hit their 20th birthday, but the former first overall pick is one of them. The sky is the limit as Davidson will have the ability to start stacking talent alongside Bedard and not just warm bodies to get to the salary cap floor, apparent in Bedard’s first two seasons in the league.

The list of young players gaining valuable experience this season is aplenty. The defensive core the other night was younger on average than the NCAA national champion Western Michigan Broncos’ blue line average age. As fans, the rebuild should be turning the page as we start to see the talent stockpiled throughout the organization every night on the ice. However, the expectations of contending are still a few seasons away.

Winners of two straight, the Chicago Blackhawks returned to the United Center on Wednesday night against the Ottawa Senators in the middle game of a three-game home stand. The Blackhawks’ offense had been rolling with 11 goals in their last two contests and the vibe around the team has been quite different following the trade of Seth Jones to the Florida Panthers, and more importantly the return on that deal in 23-year-old goaltender Spencer Knight. The former first-round pick was spectacular in his Hawks debut, making 41 saves on Monday night in the team’s 5–1 home win over the Los Angeles Kings. On Wednesday night, the Hawks gave Knight a rest and started Arvid Soderblom against Ottawa’s Linus Ullmark.

First period

Brady Tkachuk gave Ottawa a 1–0 lead with his 24th of the season at the 2:25 mark. Ottawa won an offensive zone faceoff and a Jake Sanderson point shot hit the post. Ottawa gathered the rebound and went point to point and Artem Zub shot one on goal that was deflected in by Tkachuk for the goal.

The red-hot Ryan Donato tied it at 1–1 with his 23rd of the season and 100th of his career. Ullmark gave the puck away to Landon Slaggert, who fed Donato in front and he deked Ullmark and scored at 11:38.

Less than a minute later, the Hawks took a 2–1 lead on a power-play goal from Teuvo Teravainen. The Finnish winger handled the puck in the right faceoff circle and made a diaganol pass to Tyler Bertuzzi on the doorstep. Bertuzzi’s shot went across the goal line but Teravainen was there to tap it in for his 15th of the season at 12:22.

The Senators tied it on David Perron’s third of the season at 14:09. Drake Batherson carried the puck behind the net and passed it to the front of the net and the puck bounced off Alec Martinez then off the crossbar then Perron swatted in the airborne puck to square the game at 2–2.

Second period

Joshua Norris broke the tie with his 20th of the season. The Hawks were caught out of position in their zone and Batherson gathered the puck in the slot and fed Norris for a one-timer from the left circle that he buried at 10:29 for a 3–2 Ottawa lead.

Third period

The Hawks tied it at 3–3 on Craig Smith’s ninth of the season. Pat Maroon forced a turnover and skated toward the net and his shot was stopped by Ullmark but Maroon grabbed his own rebound behind the net and fed a wide-open Smith, who buried it at 1:47. The teams would remain tied at the end of regulation.

Overtime

Just 46 seconds into overtime, Tim Stutzle scored his 20th to win it for the Sens on a delayed penalty call and earn the extra point. Stutzle got a step on Wyatt Kaiser, who held the Sens forward causing the ref to put his arm up. On the play, Stutzle crashed into Soderblom and the puck went in off Stutzle’s skate for the 4–3 win. The Hawks protested and the goal was reviewed quickly before it was upheld and the Sens skated off as winners.

Analysis

The loss was a tough one but there were a lot of positives to glean from this one. The team battled back in the third to tie it to give the Hawks points in three straight games. In what may have been his final game as a Blackhawk, Donato continued to stay hot leading up to Friday’s trade deadline. Similarly, Smith chipped in a goal and may also draw some interest from contenders before Friday’s deadline. The Hawks wrap up their three-game home stand by hosting the Utah Hockey Club on Friday night. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. CST on CHSN with the radio call on WGN 720 AM.

The Chicago Blackhawks followed up a 1–2 West Coast road trip with a solid 3–1 home win over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. On Thursday night, the Hawks hit the road again with the first of three away from the United Center, which began at Canadian Tire Centre against the Ottawa Senators. Petr Mrazek started in goal for the Hawks against one-time Blackhawk netminder Anton Forsberg.

First period

The Blackhawks received an early power play, however it was the Senators who took advantage, as Claude Giroux scored a shorthanded goal just 36 seconds into the game. Ottawa skated 3-on-2 into the Hawks zone when Giroux snapped a wrist shot from the slot and past Mrazek for his 20th of the season.

Ottawa increased its lead to 2–0 when Parker Kelly posted his eighth goal of the season. Kelly intercepted Connor Bedard’s clearing attemp off the boards and flipped it on goal from the half boards for the unassisted goal at the 6:08 mark. The score would stay that way after 20 minutes, as the Hawks looked flat out of the gate and were outshot 16–7.

Second period

A scoreless second period saw the Hawks continue to get dominated. The Blackhawks were outshot 11–6 for the period and 27–13 through two periods.

Third period

In the final period, the Hawks showed a little bit of fight but could not get one past Forsberg, as the Senators defeated the Blackhawks 2–0. Forsberg finished with 18 saves against his former team.

Analysis

The Blackhawks started slow and really never recovered, especially after the deflating shorthanded goal against in the opening minute. After receiving some praise from head coach Luke Richardson for his improvements defensively, Bedard had a sloppy game in his own end, including a turnover that led to Ottawa’s second goal.

The Blackhawks play the second of three on the road on Saturday night against the Philadelphia Flyers. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. CDT on NBCSCH with the radio call on WGN 720 AM.

The Chicago Blackhawks entered today’s matinee against the Ottawa Senators with two consecutive losses and 1–8–1 in their last 10 games. On a positive front, it was the second game of the Connor Bedard comeback tour. Bedard had an assist in his first game back and appeared to find his footing as the game wore on.

Today’s lineup was:

Vlasic-Jones
Tinordi-Crevier

Mrazek

Extras: R. Johnson, Reichel, Phillips

The notable subtraction was Lukas Reichel being healthy scratched for his second straight game.

First period

In the first period, the Blackhawks’ top line got the team on the board with a nifty passing play from Philipp Kurashev to Bedard back to Kursahev, who sent it over for Nick Foligno for the backdoor goal.

The Senators answered the Foligno goal with a goal from Tim Stutzle. Stutzle scored the goal on a 2-on-1 break to knot the score at 1–1 following a failed Jaycob Megna pinch. The Senators had another 2-on-1 that Petr Mrazek and the post turned wide of the net. The period ended with the scored tied.

Second period

Ottawa broke the tie with a goal from Jakob Chychrun. On the Senators’ power play, Stutzle entered the zone with some speed and found Chychrun wide open on the back door for the goal. The Hawks’ biggest Achilles this season has been the backdoor pass.

The Hawks responded with a goal of their own from Bedard. Kurashev won a 50-50 puck along the boards and fed Bedard, who snapped off a wrist shot that trickled through the five hole of Joonas Korpisalo.

Mrazek kept the score tied at 2–2 with some brilliant saves in the second period.

Third period

The Hawks thought they had the lead when Bedard dangled his way around Korpisalo for his second goal of the game. But, the goal was overturned with an offside call on an Ottawa challenge.

This was called offsides, no goal https://t.co/PdiYDZnewn

After the goal was overturned, the Hawks rallied for the victory. Jason Dickinson fired a shot that was blocked, and then when he was falling down, fired a second shot past Korpisalo for the eventual game winner. The Hawks would hold on for the 3–2 victory.

Analysis

The Blackhawks are a different team with Bedard on the ice. He helps them generate chances and had one goal and one assist in his second game back. With all due respect to Brock Faber, the Calder Trophy is still Bedard’s to lose, despite what the Wild’s fan base would like to think.

Mrazek continues to have an impressive season with great positioning and a great stick. Dickinson continued his best NHL season with his 17th goal of the season. The Hawks have shown they can be a winning team when they score three goals or more in a game; it is just a matter of if they can get there.

Lastly, during the broadcast, the birthday boy, Darren Pang, and Chris Vosters alluded to the fact that Reichel will likely be sent to Rockford soon. With the roster getting healthy and his poor play, Reichel needs to be sent down to regain some confidence. Blackhawks studio analyst John Scott said the other night that Reichel has had a terrible season and the Hawks need to figure out if he is in the future plan.

The Blackhawks’ next game is Monday against the Carolina Hurricanes. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST.

A back-to-back game after a loss, tonight’s game for the Colorado Avalanche against the Ottawa Senators was a big unknown. Miles Wood returned from the flu and was a bonus. After calling up Justus Annunen from the Colorado Eagles, he got the job of starting goalie. Ping-pong scoring was the nature of the game throughout the first period. The Avalanche were behind heading into the third period but scored four unanswered goals to win convincingly. Mark Rycroft from Altitude Sports said it “No one took a shift off”. On a back-to-back game that says a lot about where this team is currently at. They played hard and played a great comeback game, winning 7–4.

Takeaways

— Throughout the game, Annunen showed focus and made key saves at critical moments. He held on to the puck, not giving up rebounds. The Avalanche players backed him up in net during the third, showing their support of his efforts in the game. He faced 40 shots on goal from the Senators, only giving up four and was very impressive.

OTT has 40 shots and Justus Annunen officially has a .900 SV% tonight.

GAA needs a little work but he’s done his part and then some. #GoAvsGo

— Adrian Hernandez (@AdoHernandez27) January 17, 2024

— Sam Malinski is proving the type of defenseman you want on your team. His defensive play is solid and offensively he is on the board scoring goals. His team mates are passing to him, so he can shoot the snipe shots. With one called back goal and one that was good, he played a noticeable part in this win.

Sam Malinski zips one home with just a second left on the power play, putting Colorado up 5-4!#GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/CD0sDVqkZf

— Everyone could feel Miles Woods’ presence. During the first intermission interview with Katie Gaus from AltitudeTV, he commented on doing short shifts, as he still was not feeling well. You wouldn’t have known it. His speed and tenacity were what we’re used to seeing. His return helped the Avalanche achieve the win tonight.

Wood is one of those guys who changes the game with his speed and effort to the benefit of his linemates in a big way. A chaos machine with a little anger built in.

— #AVSFAM (@avsfam) January 17, 2024

— The other two unsung heroes on the Avalanche team at the moment are Logan O’Connor and Samuel Girard. O’Connor is fearless. He pestered his Senator opponents and went in for the hit to slow down the opposition, no matter what. His game tonight was relentless, and he had a goal to show for it. Sam Girard is the quiet achiever. Both his defensive and offensive games are solid. Despite not being mentioned a lot, his presence on the ice strengthens the defensive core.

Conclusion

The Avalanche added another two points to their tally. So far, they are two wins and one loss on this road trip. Time for the team to have some much needed rest tomorrow before facing the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. Artturi Lehkonen is with the team, so we may see him in one of the upcoming games. And Bo Byram may be close to returning too. Both players will add value.

The Colorado Avalanche needed a redemption game after losing to one of the worst teams in the NHL on Tuesday. The return of defenseman Samuel Girard after entering the player assistance program last month gave the team a boost for sure. He will work his way back into the lineup in the coming days. Cale Makar returned to the lineup after missing the last three games for the Avalanche. The big story? Nathan MacKinnon with his record setting four goals. It was the first four goal performance in franchise history for the Avalanche and Quebec Nordiques. Here are some takeaways in Colorado’s 6–4 victory over the Ottawa Senators.

Some light reading. #GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/ntvOPhmZXz

Takeaways

— Discipline played a factor once again as it did in Chicago. Colorado spent the last six of the last 12 minutes in the penalty box. They were giving the Senators multiple chances to score with their special teams, but with a conversion rate of just 18.3 percent, they had no luck.

— The defense for the Avalanche had most of the issues throughout the game. Discipline, positioning, exiting the zone, you name it. There was a general problem with it. They left the backdoor wide open in several instances, one leading directly to a goal for Josh Norris. Some had their backs turned to the play. Because of this, they did not know where the puck was and therefore no clue where the forward was heading.

Josh Norris (11) evens things up on the powerplay! #GoSensGo

Nice play by Batherson (14). Stützle (25) also assists. Alfie, who is in charge of the powerplay, gave a little fist pump. pic.twitter.com/MqxeZAEKrq

— Alexandar Georgiev has been a question mark for Colorado the entire season so far. According to Moneypuck.com, Georgiev is ranked 25th among goalies for goals saved above expected with three. The defense is only blocking roughly 21 percent of the shots towards the net for him. Sometimes last year he looked completely calm, this year he looks panicked in tight situations.

— MacKinnon went from a burning ember to a raging fire in tonight’s victory. He scored in his 17th consecutive game In that stretch he has had 12 goals and 21 assists. Four goals were part of the tally, for which no Colorado Avalanche player has done.

Nathan MacKinnon puts the Avalanche up early with a perfect one-timer on the power play!#GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/ufSyIcqiwP

Conclusion

Although the Avalanche got the win, it was a very sloppy win. The defense needs to tighten things up in front of the net to take away the opportunities of their opponent. The team can not rely so heavily on MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen to do all the scoring. If one falls into a slump (like Rantanen’s nine game slump) then the other forwards need to pick the slack up. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done for the Avalanche if they want to win the Stanley Cup. Up next, Colorado will take on the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday in Denver.

The Chicago Blackhawks made easy work of the Ottawa Senators with a 5–0 shellacking on home ice. The victory is the first since the trade deadline and halted Chicago’s losing streak at four games. Alex Stalock was the star of the show, stopping all 35 shots he would face. After two periods of play, Chicago was being outshot 27–14, but Stalock stood tall for his second whitewashing of the season.

Seth Jones scored twice to reach double-digit goals for the season. Jones has shown a propensity for the offensive zone that we all knew he had in his game. Since the breakdown of the NHL roster in Chicago the past few weeks, Jones has found himself in deep in the offensive zone trying to create more offense. It is almost like he is a forward playing on defense.

Youngster Lukas Reichel scored his second goal of the season late to finish off the barrage of goals for the Blackhawks. Reichel does a lot of things well on the ice and can use his speed to create in the offensive zone. The one thing that goes unnoticed is his ability to work and make plays along the boards, a skill that many do not have or are not willing to do, and his positioning in both zones. Reichel is rarely out of position in his own zone; he is young, so mistakes will happen, and gives himself an advantage when shielding off the defender in his own zone to either control the puck or get position to take advantage of the rebound.

Anders Bjork recorded a trio of assists in 14:27 of total ice time. The Mequon, Wisconsin, native has been playing with a jump in his stride since joining the team and it is noticeable the 26-year-old is trying to showcase his best with his new-found opportunity since coming over from the Buffalo Sabres. Bjork will not wow you with any one skill, but when given a fresh start, it is a nice sign to see a player try and take advantage of his future.

Philipp Kurashev and Jason Dickinson both scored their ninth goals of the season. Kurashev’s goal was the first of the game that found the net behind Senator goaltender Mads Sogaard. Sogaard would manage to stop only 16 of the 21 shots he would face after showing a nice three-game stretch he was having in net.

Chicago scored early and often and that took the wind out of the Senators’ sails. The one thing that has been mentioned and should not go unnoticed is the effort Luke Richardson’s teams have been playing on a nightly basis. Think back to the Jeremy Colliton era and how a team with a sprinkling of talent looked so disinterested and lost on most nights, and this was with multiple ready-to-win talents in the lineup, and how well Richardson’s teams are prepared on the ice each night with a fraction of the talent. Kudos to Richardson for teaching these kids how to be pros and how to prepare for games, which is not easy when you are trying to tank. This is what an organizational approach to development looks like, fans.

Of course, the game was also former Blackhawk Alex DeBrincat’s first time back to the United Center as a member of the Senators. Needless to say, DeBrincat’s revenge game did not quite go as he would have hoped.

Chicago is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Michigan to take on the Detroit Red Wings at 6:30 p.m. CST on TNT.

The Chicago Blackhawks continued their Canadian road trip against the Ottawa Senators. This matchup was against former Hawks Alex DeBrincat and Tyler Motte. On the night, the Senators raised Chris Neil’s No. 25 to the rafters in his retirement ceremony. Neil is the fourth Senators number retired and is one of three players to dress for 1,000 games with the Senators.

Patrick Kane got the scoring started with a goal less than a minute into regulation. It would be the only goal of the first period. Despite the injured hip, Kane got the Blackhawks off to the early lead.

In the second period, Shane Pinto tied the game up at 1–1. Pinto tipped in a Derick Brassard shot from the point.

In the third period, the Senators got goals from Claude Giroux and Brady Tkachuk to go up 3–1. The Blackhawks answered back with goals from the red-hot Sam Lafferty and Kane.

The Senators and Blackhawks went into overtime tied at 3–3. In overtime, Andreas Athanasiou raced down the ice to find Tyler Johnson. Johnson fanned on the shot and then sent it back to Anthansiou for the game-winner.

With the win, the Blackhawks are now once again two points ahead of the Columbus Blue Jackets for the worst point total in the NHL.

With the trade rumors swirling, Kane put together an impressive two-goal performance. In addition to Kane playing well, Lafferty put together another solid performance and keeps enhancing his trade value before the March 3 deadline. Another hot name from the Blackhawks is defenseman Jake McCabe. McCabe has been one of the best defenders on the Blackhawks and has an appealing contract for contending teams. The expectation is that McCabe and Lafferty could be had for the right price at the deadline. The Kane situation is very murky with the status of his no-movement clause still unknown.

The Blackhawks’ next opponent has already begun adding pieces for their Stanley Cup run. The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired Ryan O’Reilly in a three-team trade with the St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild on Friday night. The Hawks take on the Leafs take on on Sunday at 5 p.m. CST at the United Center.

The Chicago Blackhawks (21–30–8) faced off against the equally inept Ottaway Senators (21–31–5) for a battle of two teams looking for better days ahead. Ottawa has set up their organization with a depth of young prospects while Chicago fans wait and see if Kyle Davidson has any tricks up his sleeve to start the “rebuild” for the second time in two seasons on Madison Street.

With Marc-Andre Fleury starting tonight in net, one would hope this would be a nice tune-up game for him before being shipped off to a competitor.

Earlier today, defenseman Seth Jones was quoted at this morning’s skate “It’s been frustrating the hell out of me this entire year” when asked about only having three goals so far this season. The forward disguised as a defenseman only has eight more years on his deal with the Blackhawks.

Derek King went with 11 forwards and 7 defensemen to start tonight’s contest.

#Blackhawks projected lineup vs. Senators:
DeBrincat-Strome-Kane
Hagel-Toews-Dach
Kubalik-Carpenter-Lafferty
T. Johnson-Entwistle

de Haan-S. Jones
McCabe-Murphy
Stillman-C. Jones
Gustafsson

Fleury
Lankinen

*Borgstrom, Kurashev and Regula are the scratches

— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) March 12, 2022

This move left King with six defensemen after Senator Parker Kelly sent Connor Murphy into the boards awkwardly which resulted in Murphy being stretchered off the Ottawa ice. Kelly was given a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct. Chicago would not take advantage of the man-advantage and found themselves down 2–0 after the first period of action.

To make matters worse, Blackhawks’ captain Jonathan Toews dropped the cloves with Senators’ forward Zach Sanford after Sanford leveled Kirby Dach with his head down. Toews jumped in to protect his young linemate, only to receive a few blows to the head, something Toews does not need with his concussion history.

All-in-all, the first period was a poor showing for the beleaguered Blackhawks with Murphy being stretchered off, Toews taking hits to the head and Fleury surrendering two goals on 10 shots.

Chicago would go on a barrage of goals, scoring six of the game’s next seven goals led by two from Toews in the first three minutes to tie the game 2–2. Toews’ second goal, on the power play, was his 7th goal of the season. Both goals would open up the floodgates on former Chicago goaltender Anton Forsberg who had been on an excellent five-game stretch and playing very well for the young Senators.

Patrick Kane assisting on Jonathan Toews’ goal to move into sole possession of second with 1,154 points in franchise history.

The assist gave Patrick Kane sole possession of second with 1,154 points in Blackhawks’ history. The former first overall pick has been a pleasure to watch on the ice each and every season.

Chicago took their first lead of the game when defenseman Caleb Jones scored his third of the season. Nick Paul would tie the game at the 15:41 mark of the period only to have forward Sam Lafferty take back the lead for the visitors 18 seconds later. The goal gave 27–year old his third of the season.

ok @SamLafferty18 we see you IT'S 4-3 pic.twitter.com/4gDfx7g0tS

— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) March 13, 2022

Caleb Jones scored midway through the third period to extend the Blackhawks lead to 5–3. The goal gave Jones his first multi-goal game of his career. The streaking Dylan Strome scored his 16th goal of the season off a nice tip from a shot from defenseman Seth Jones from the point.

THOUGHTS

Patrick Kane can still control a game when he wants. His skill with the puck is second to none. However, is he the key piece to starting the rebuild by getting draft picks and prospects to start building up the organization’s future talent? Remember, the Seth Jones’ trade gave up last season’s first-round pick and this year’s first-round pick.

Marc-Andre Fleury showed his veteran leadership after giving up a tough third goal and shouldering the blame for the youngster Caleb Jones. Jones played the puck fairly well but Paul came to a screeching halt and bury a shot behind Fleury in one quick, swift motion. This type of leadership would look great in Toronto come April during the Maple Leafs’ playoff run.

Chicago lost Connor Murphy to a scary play early in the game and also lost forward Tyler Johnson to concussion protocol midway through the contest. Let’s hope both are doing well as reports were Murphy stayed at the arena after being stretchered off the ice.

As a fan, this was a game that was exciting to watch. Now let’s keep the phone lines busy Mr. Davidson and prepare to make this team a playoff team within the next half-decade. It’s already been five seasons since you were relevant.

After going winless in October, the Chicago Blackhawks looked to get November started on the right foot. The Hawks did just that, cruising to a convincing 5–1 rout of the visiting Ottawa Senators.

Chicago did get a bit of good news before the game, as Patrick Kane returned to the lineup for the first time in a week. Kane had been out in the COVID-19 protocol.

The Senators came into Chicago after defeating the Dallas Stars in a 4–1 victory on Friday. In a battle of former Pittsburgh goalies, it was new Blackhawks goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury that bested his old teammate, Matt Murray.

First period

In the first period, the Senators controlled the play early. At a point during the period, the Senators had generated 11 shots on net with four quality chances, while the Blackhawks had only three shots on net and no quality chances. Despite being outshot early, Fleury was able to hold Ottawa scoreless. Fleury not only was stopping shots, but he was directing rebounds to the corners, a great sign for the struggling netminder.

With less than a minute to go in the period, Brandon Hagel broke open the scoreless affair. Kane took a shot from the left circle that deflected off a Senators defenseman right into Hagel’s wheelhouse. Hagel buried the shot past Murray for the Blackhawks’ second lead of the season at 1–0, which would be the score at the end of the frame.

Second period

In the second period, Ottawa’s Drake Batherson was caught holding Connor Murphy for the Blackhawks’ first power play of the game. While the Blackhawks have struggled 5-on-5 this season, they have excelled on special teams. On the man advantage, Jonathan Toews fed Ryan Carpenter in the slot. Carpenter’s wrister was fought off by Murray, but the rebound found the stick of Kane. Kane flicked the backhanded shot into the net for his 406th career goal and the second Blackhawks goal of the game, doubling Chicago’s advantage to 2–0.

The tally tied Kane with Steve Larmer for third in goals scored with the Blackhawks.

After two periods, the Blackhawks were fully in control with a two-goal lead.

Third period

In the third period, the Blackhawks dropped the hammer on the Senators. Less than one minute into the third period, Hagel shot a puck from the point past Murray for this second goal the night and a 3–0 Chicago lead. The Hagel goal was aided by a screen from Carpenter.

Less than a minute later, Kane took sole possession of third place on the franchise goal scoring list with his second goal of the game. Kane got a pass from Erik Gustafsson, who flew up the wing and fed it across to Kane, who made no mistake firing the feed into the back of the net for a lopsided 4–0 lead. Next up on the franchise goal scoring list for Kane to catch is the late great Stan Mikita at 541 goals.

With the Blackhawks firmly in control, the only blemish on the evening was an Alex Formenton goal just 19 seconds after Kane’s strike. However, Kane and the Hawks would get the last laugh, as Kane capped his historic night with another goal for his seventh career regular season hat trick.

When the final horn sounded, the Blackhawks won big 5–1 and had finally earned their first win of the season.

Analysis

It was all good for the Blackhawks on Monday. After sustaining an early onslaught from the Senators in the first period, the team was able to settle in and score plenty of goals.

Patrick Kane

Kane recorded his seventh regular season hat trick and passed Steve Larmer on the Blackhawks all-time goals list to gain sole possession of third place. He also passed Denis Savard for third in points for the Blackhawks. Kane had four points on the night and now has 1,097 career points.

Brandon Hagel

Hagel recorded his first two-goal outing of the season. Hagel has been the Jeremy Colliton Swiss Army knife, playing on multiple lines this season and sometimes multiples lines within a period. Hagel continues to bring energy to any line he plays on.

Marc-Andre Fleury

Fluery had been struggling coming into St. Louis on Saturday night, but after allowing only one goal on 37 shots, his confidence seemed to be restored. In Monday’s victory, Fleury allowed one goal on 24 shots. Those two contests have been the only games the Blackhawks have allowed less than three goals in a game. Needless to say, it would appear as though the reigning Vezina Trophy winner is finally gaining his footing in Chicago.

The Blackhawks swing back into action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the United Center, hosting the spotless 8–0–0 Carolina Hurricanes.

On Wednesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs made two consecutive trades to acquire Denis Malgin and Max Veronneau.

Denis Malgin was acquired in a trade with the the Florida Panthers. In return, the Panthers picked up Mason Marchement. This trade follows a dismal effort against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night. Malgin is primarily a centre, but can play on the wing as well. He will likely be playing centre, particularly if Alexander Kerfoot, who was acquired to centre the third line, continues to play on John Tavares’ wing. Malgin has four goals and 12 points in 36 games. This season, the 23-year-old Swiss native has a low expected goal share, has been great in the past and decent recently at managing shot quality and has been good in transition. Malgin carries a cap hit of $750,000 and is scheduled to be a restricted free agent in July.

Marchement has established himself as a reliable, skilled AHL forward. The forward has appeared in four games with the Leafs this season. He was undrafted and joined the Toronto Marlies in 2016. Marchement has played 24 games with the Toronto Marlies this season and has amassed 18 points. The reason he has struggled at the next level is that his skating is under average, and facing better competition, he has not been able to keep up.

It is important to note that Marchement has not been able to regularly make it into the Leafs lineup, while Malgin, who is two years younger than Marchement, has considerable NHL experience.

Later that day, Kyle Dubas acquired Max Veronneau in exchange for Aaron Luchuk and a conditional 2021 sixth-round pick. Veronneau has played four games with the Senators this season, and 33 with their AHL affiliate, the Belleville Senators. Veronneau is due for a new contract in July. He is set to join the Marlies as soon as he is in Toronto. On the other hand, Luchuk has spent the majority of his time in the ECHL. Although he has played three games with the Marlies this season, Luchuk has spent 45 games with the Newfoundland Growlers, amassing 19 goals and 31 assists for 50 points. Luchuk has been assigned to the Belleville Senators. As for the conditional pick, the Senators receive the pick if Veronneau plays in 10 games for the Maple Leafs in 2019–20 or 10 games for the Leafs in 2020–21 if he re-signs with the club.

The ‘Hawks were looking to keep the wins coming against the Senators after picking up points against the Anaheim Ducks and being them handily by a score of 4-2. Dominik Kubalik looked to continue his hot streak as he had five goals in four games coming into the game tonight. Let’s go to the action.

First period:

The Blackhawks started off the game in incredibly rough fashion. They lost a big defensive zone faceoff which proved incredibly costly, as the Senators got a puck to the front of the net and an uncovered Connor Brown put the puck past Robin Lehner, making it 1-0 Senators. Then, a couple of minutes later, the Senators got another puck towards the net that Chris Tierney put off of Erik Gustafsson’s skate. The puck then went off of his stick and into the back of the net, changing the score to be 2-0 Senators early on in this one.

The Blackhawks got a power play on a penalty from Mark Borowiecki elbowing Kirby Dach in the face. They weren’t able to do anything with it, ultimately, although Dominik Kubalik continued his strong play by putting the puck towards the net multiple times and finding himself out in front frequently. In the last couple of minutes of the period, Slater Koekkoek got called for a high stick in front of the net which gave the Senators their second power play of the game, with which they didn’t convert. The first period ended with Ottawa having a 2-0 lead.

Second period:

To start the second period, both teams traded great chances back and forth, with the Blackhawks getting a good chance on a Drake Caggiula one-timer and the Senators getting a great opportunity on a wrister from Anthony Duclair. The Blackhawks got a good chance with just over ten minutes left in the period, with Patrick Kane getting the puck out in front to Jonathan Toews, who put the puck wide of the net. With just under eight minutes to go, Drake Caggiula put a shot off of the post. Then Gustafsson blasted one wide, with Marcus Hogberg deciding to hold onto the puck and settle things down.

With just under three minutes to play in the second, Toews got the puck in front to Kane who wristed it off of Kubalik’s shin pads and into the net, bringing the Blackhawks within one. That’s how the second period would end, with the Blackhawks needing to get another goal to come all the way back and tie things up.

Third period:

There was a lot of back and forth to start the third. Both teams were generating chances and getting shots on the opposing teams’ goal. Toews out-waited the Senators’ defense and whipped a pass up to Kubalik who took the puck and wristed it past Hogberg to make it 2-2 in the game. The Blackhawks continued to generate good chances, win faceoffs, and do all that they could do to break the tie that they helped create. Kane tried to set up Kubalik for his first hat trick in the NHL, but wasn’t able to get the pass over to him for a shot attempt. Then, Kubalik was set up again by Kane, who tried to deposit the puck between the pads, but it was stopped by Hogberg. The Blackhawks did a good job of keeping the puck out of their own zone and in their possession, but weren’t able to score. The period would end in the same 2-2 score, sending this game to overtime.

The Blackhawks would end the game quickly on an incredible individual effort by Toews who burst right through the Senators’ defenders, went around the net, and flung a wicked wrister past the glove of Hogberg, giving the Blackhawks a 3-2 victory.

Let’s go around the boards and see what was being talked about tonight during the game:

#Blackhawks line of Kubalik-Toews-Kane in 10:01 of 5-on-5 action vs. Ottawa:

— 11 shot attempts for and 5 against
— 7 scoring chances for and 0 against
— 4 high-danger chances for and 0 against
— 2 goals for and 0 against

They combined for 3 goals and 4 assists tonight.

— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) January 15, 2020

Yes, the Blackhawks’ first line was this good. It’s insane that they only allowed five shot attempts against them, which didn’t necessarily wind up being shots on goal. This is quite an incredible performance, but did come against the Senators, so it should somewhat be taken with a grain of salt.

Patrick Kane this season vs Canadian teams

Patrick Kane likes to play Canadian teams. I’m really hoping that this point streak is able to continue against a better opponent in Montreal than they saw tonight. But Toews, Kane, and Kubalik looks like a great first line to me!

https://twitter.com/HeresYourReplay/status/1217281265860337665?s=20

Yes, I just had to put up this gorgeous winner for everyone to see again. Man, what an individual effort by number nineteen in white! He looked like the Jonathan Toews of old on this play, and singlehandedly beat all three of the Senators’ defenders, who were barely able to get a stick on him.

Looking to pick up their third win in a row, the Blackhawks will be back in action on Wednesday night versus the Montreal Canadiens at 6:30 p.m. CST on NBC Sports Chicago.
