First period

The Flyers jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 48 seconds into the game. A miscommunication between Knight and Artyom Levshunov left the puck on the stick of Christian Dvorak, who fed Alex Bump for his third of the season on a wide-open net.

The mistakes by the Hawks continued as Andre Burakovsky made a blind pass that was stolen by Luke Glendening near the half boards, and he fired it toward the net and it was tipped in by Sean Couturier to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead. For Couturier, it was his ninth of the season at 2:33 and it would stay that way through 20 minutes.

Second period

The Flyers took a 3-0 lead when Trevor Zegras skated in and his shot was stopped by Knight but Denver Barkey was there to pounce on the rebound for his fourth of the season at 5:14.

The Hawks finally got on the board as Connor Bedard scored his 30th of the season to cut the deficit to 3-1. In what can be seen as a glimpse into the future, Frondell made a backhand pass across the goal line to Bedard who fired a one-timer past Ersson at 11:11. For Frondell, it was his second point in as many games.

Noah Cates stretched the Flyers’ lead to 4-1 with his 16th of the season at 12:41. Matvei Michkov won a board battle in the offensive zone and found Cates, who got behind the Hawks defense and skated in alone and beat Knight for the goal.

With 25 seconds left in the second, Dvorak scored his 15th of the season to give the Flyers a 5-1 lead. Levshunov’s nightmare game continued as Owen Tippett forced a turnover and fed Dvorak on the doorstep. The Flyers led by four after two periods.

Third period

There was no scoring in the period as the Flyers won it 5-1.

Analysis

It was a sloppy game for the young Hawks, who were generous with the puck with several giveaways and were unable to climb out of an early 2-0 deficit that seemed to have snowballed into a nightmare. The defense, led by Levshunov, was extremely careless with the puck and the Hawks spent most of the night chasing the puck and generating very little offense. Boisvert made little impact in his debut as he centered the fourth line and received just over nine minutes of ice time. It will be a quick turnaround for the Hawks as they head back up I-95 to New York City for a Friday night contest against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. CDT on CHSN with the radio call on 720 AM WGN.

Konecny scored his 11th goal of the season in the first period after defenseman Wyatt Kaiser lost his man darting to the net and allowed a cross-crease pass from Zegras to find the Konecny for the early 1-0 lead. The goal, also assisted by Sean Couturier, beat Chicago goaltender Spencer Knight glove side.

As both teams continued to sleepwalk through the early part of the game, the Chicago crowd was only sparingly shouting “Green Bay sucks” as fans seemed disinterested with the paid practice they were watching on West Madison Street.

Philadelphia extended its lead to 2-0 after Noah Cates netted his ninth goal of the season at the 11:13 mark of the second period. Cates found a loose puck after Konecny attempted to drag the puck to his stick and fanned on the attempt, only to find a Cates in front from an easy tap-in goal.

Chicago found a little life late in the second period after a few scuffles and pushing and shoving around the Flyers’ net led to a Ryan Donato goal at the 18:30 mark of the second period. The goal, Donato’s ninth of the season, was assisted by defensemen Matt Grzelcyk and Artyom Levshunov and cut the Flyers’ lead in half at 2-1 going into the second intermission.

Philadelphia would send the fans to the exits with an empty net goal at the 17:52 mark when head coach Jeff Blashill waived for Knight to come to the bench for the extra attacker, only to be surprised that Philadelphia was already in possession of the puck, and buried home its third goal of the game before Knight actually ever made it off the ice. The goal, scored by Carl Grundstrom, was his fifth of the season.

Knight stopped 23 of the 25 shots while Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson stopped 20 of the 21 shots he faced in the victory.

Chicago is back in action in Dallas on Saturday for a 7 p.m. start at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Analysis

Anyone watching this game, and recent games since his injury, that does not understand that this team’s blemishes this season have been covered up by the great play from Connor Bedard needs to have their eyes examined. Chicago is still a bottom-five team without their star and the defense just does not have the talent to compete on a night-to-night basis at this point in their careers. Growing pains are still coming as the “dog days of winter” are quickly approaching this young team.

Knight kept his team in the ball game but must watch his overpowered and outsmarted defensemen continue to give up easy chances in front of him. The 24-year-old should see out the back end of this rebuild with a strong mental game with the toughness he is providing for this current last-place team in the NHL.

First period

This game got off to a fast start, with both teams generating plenty of chances. Just under four minutes into the period, Philadelphia opened the scoring. Jamie Drysdale was credited for the goal, even though it looked like Travis Konecny tipped the puck in front. Regardless, it put the Flyers up 1–0. The Blackhawks would knot things up a couple of minutes later. Nick Foligno took the puck back in the offensive zone and got it in front to Pat Maroon. He tipped it past Ivan Fedotov to make it a 1–1 game.

Just under a minute later, Tyler Bertuzzi was fighting to keep the puck in the offensive zone. He managed to get the puck over to Joe Veleno, who put a wrist shot home for his first as a Blackhawk. The Flyers wasted no time in tying things back up, though. Twelve seconds later, Travis Sanheim put a shot on net that snuck through the arm of Knight and across the line, 2–2. Just under four minutes later, the Flyers would strike again. Bobby Brink got a scrappy goal out in front, fighting to get the puck through Knight, and the Flyers were up 3–2.

With 1:48 left in the period, Connor Bedard took the puck right off the faceoff and wristed it past Fedotov, knotting it up again 3–3.

The period would end after all that action the same way that it started, with everybody all tied up.

Second period

The Blackhawks got the scoring going in the second period. Bertuzzi put a backhand shot past the Flyers’ goaltender after Veleno and Kurashev put shots on net, putting the Blackhawks in front 4–3. The Blackhawks went on the power play shortly thereafter, as two Flyers got called for tripping, sending the Blackhawks to a 5-on-3 advantage. After a great keep-in by Teuvo Teravainen, he put a shot-pass on net. It was tipped in front by Ryan Donato past the Flyer’s goalie, 5–3 Chicago. The Flyers got one back three and a half minutes later. Drysdale took a shot from the point that went off of Konecny out in front, bringing the Flyers within one.

The Blackhawks got another power play with six and a half minutes left in the period. Like watching a replay, the puck found itself in front on the stick of Donato again. He put home his second on the power play, making it a 6–4 game.

The Blackhawks would take that lead into the intermission, after their 16-shot second period produced great results.

Third period

The third period was uneventful compared to the first two. Lukas Reichel got a flukey goal past the Flyers’ netminder. He took a pass from Maroon and beat the Flyers’ goalie in outwaiting him. He threw the puck right in front, deflecting off of the Flyers’ defenseman and into the net, putting the extra point on this one for the Blackhawks, 7–4. Though not quite as intense as game one of the 2010 Stanley Cup Final, the same result came to pass, with the Blackhawks taking the victory.

Analysis

The Blackhawks took advantage of some sloppy play by the Flyers in all areas of the game. Defensively, there were a good number of lapses from the Flyers that allowed Blackhawks players to get in close on net, or steal the puck along the boards, or just beat them with a move to get to the net. The Hawks took advantage of power play chances, too, putting two in the net, and killing off the two penalties taken on their side. It is nice to see Maroon getting a couple of points after announcing that this will be his final season, as he has proven to be a good mentor to this young team, and is a good presence and influence on the younger guys.

The Blackhawks’ next game is on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. CDT. That game will actually be watchable without an antenna, as it will be on TNT and truTV.

The only lineup change from their victory over Florida was Louis Crevier made his first NHL appearance of the season in place of Wyatt Kaiser.

First period

In the first period, the Flyers were all over the Hawks early. Petr Mrazek had to make three A+ saves to keep the game knotted at 0–0. Later in the period, Lukas Reichel got the Hawks on the board.

The first period ended with the Hawks up 1–0. Mrazek bailed out his team multiple times in the first period. The only productive line was the fourth line with Reichel, Pat Maroon and Craig Smith.

Second period

In the second period, the fourth line once again cashed in a scoring chance. Reichel was denied on the breakaway but the line stayed with it and Maroon put the goal home for his first as a Blackhawk.

The second period ended with the Hawks up 2–0 over the Flyers.

Third period

In the third period, the wheels fell off the Blackhawks’ wagon. Mrazek got beat by a Sean Couturier tip-in goal at the 12:33 mark of the third period. Later in the period, Noah Cates of the Flyers got a shot from high in the zone past Mrazek to tie the game up. The game remained tied until overtime.

Overtime

In overtime, Matvei Michkov beat Mrazek with a goal on a Flyers’ power play. The Blackhawks lost 3–2 to the Flyers.

Analysis

Diagnosing the Blackhawks’ problems is like playing the board game Operation. Currently, everything except goaltending on this roster hurts. While the Hawks’ offense scored two goals in the game, their defense surrendered 37 shots on net and three goals. Shots on net have been the achilles heel of the Blackhawks for years.

Connor Bedard

Connor Bedard has not recorded a shot on goal for two consecutive games. It is the first this has happened in his young NHL career. Teams are focusing on stopping Bedard because the Blackhawks’ offense has not displayed another scoring threat. Despite bringing in Tyler Bertuzzi and Teuvo Teravainen, Bedard has had a tougher go this season. Bedard, Bertuzzi and Teravainen have to get going for the Hawks.

Lukas Reichel

While people on Twitter are screaming for Reichel to moved up the lineup, he has been his most effective on the fourth line. With veterans Maroon and Smith, Reichel snapped his 10-game goalless streak and recorded his eighth point of the season. He now has eight points in 17 games as opposed to 16 points in 65 games all of last season.

Mrazek

The line bright spot for the Hawks in this contest was the play of Mrazek. While surrendering three goals, he still finished the game with a .919 save percentage and made a few huge saves early. Overall for the season, he is playing above league average in terms of save percentage at .912. Without his stellar play in this contest, this game was going to be a lopsided affair.

How to fix the Hawks

The question plaguing the Blackhawks is how to “right” the ship. Many people believe one way to fix the team is by firing Luke Richardson. Others believe Reichel playing more minutes will improve the team. Lastly, people have begun beating the drum for Frank Nazar to be called up.

Honestly, none of these “solutions” are going to fix the Blackhawks. The Hawks are a lottery team for the third year in a row and that is the reality the majority of fans must accept and embrace.

The Hawks return to action against the Dallas Stars on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. CST.

Arvid Soderblom got the start in net for the Hawks, replacing Petr Mrazek. Jarred Tinordi stepped into the lineup, taking the place of Nikita Zaitsev. In an attempt to mix up lines, Luke Richardson promoted Jason Dickinson to the first line, pairing him with Connor Bedard and Philipp Kurashev.

First period

The Blackhawks came into this game setting a different tone compared to their previous game against the Senators. With more offensive spark, the Hawks were able to take advantage of offensive chances against the Flyers.

Just over two minutes into the game, Chicago started the scoring. After a face-off victory, a solid passing sequence allowed Lukas Reichel to take the lead. Assisted by Tinordi and Andreas Athanasiou, Reichel broke a 26-game goal drought with his fourth of the season.

The Hawks were held shotless for over 12 minutes after taking the lead. The shotless drought did not stop the offensive effectiveness of Chicago. Exactly 17 minutes into the first, Kurashev extended the Blackhawks’ lead to two. He was assisted by Alex Vlasic and Bedard.

The fireworks of the first did not end at the Kurashev goal. With a minute left in the period, Flyers forward Scott Laughton dropped the gloves with Ryan Donato. After landing a few punches each, the two combatants ended the melee in a stalemate. 

The first period ended with the Hawks leading 2–0. The Hawks held a 10–7 shots-on-goal lead over the Flyers.

Second period

The second period started with Philly immediately taking the agenda. Just 17 seconds into the period, Tyson Foerster shot the puck from just inside the blue line to cut the lead to one. With this goal, Foerster gained his 20th goal of the season. He was assisted by Garnet Hathaway.

After the Foerster goal, the game started tilting the Flyers’ way. Philly got on the power play two times in the period, including once on a questionable goalie interference call on Bedard. Despite the two Philly power plays, the Hawks were able to hold off the Flyers.

Following a tripping minor by Laughton, Chicago was able to regain a two-goal lead over the Flyers. After a tick-tack-toe passing sequence on the power play, Nick Foligno was able to shoot the puck past Samuel Ersson. Foligno was assisted by Kurashev and Tyler Johnson.

The period ended with Chicago holding a 3–1 lead over Philadelphia. The Flyers were able to outshoot the Hawks in the period, holding a 13–9 shot advantage in the period. 

Third period

The third period continued the Blackhawks’ show of force. The Flyers had no offensive attack to finish the contest, and Chicago took advantage.

After nine minutes of hockey, the Hawks got on the board again. Taking advantage of a turnover, Joey Anderson found the back of the net, extending the lead to 4–1. Reichel assisted on the goal for his second point of the night.

Five minutes after the Anderson goal, Chicago scored once again. Keeping Philly on their collective heels, MacKenzie Entwistle found the net for his fifth of the season. He was assisted by Anderson and Wyatt Kaiser. This goal extended the lead to 5–1, which turned out to be the final score of the game.

Analysis

Whatever Richardson put in place in practice after the Senators game, it clearly worked tonight. The Hawks were able to efficiently get the puck past neutral ice and put the Flyers on the defense. Although they were outshot 30–24 by the end of the game, Chicago showed quality over quantity on their scoring attempts, and were able to win a much-needed road game in an arena known to be difficult to perform in.

Chicago will continue its road trip against the New York Islanders on Tuesday. That game will begin 6:30 p.m CDT.

Trade One

The team traded Ryan Johansen to the Philadelphia Flyers along with a 2025 first-round pick for defenseman Sean Walker and a 2026 fifth round pick. The Avalanche will come out on top with the trade, saving money. In the end Colorado will save $1.35 million on the salary cap. At the beginning of the season, there were expectations that Johansen would fill the role of the second line center. He has done anything but that. In 63 games with the Avalanche, he has only accumulated 23 points. He has also played as low as the fourth line for Colorado. Walker is a mobile defenseman that will carry the puck into the zone. Even on a bad Flyers team he has 22 points in 63 games.

Trade Two

The Colorado Avalanche traded Bowen Byram to the Buffalo Sabres for forward Casey Mittelstadt. It was a one-for-one trade that once again had Colorado saving $1.35 million in the salary cap. Byram has had his fair share of injuries, including concussions. But his recent decline in play this season and the addition of Sam Malinski made him expendable. Mittelstadt was leading Buffalo in points and will be a restricted free agent this summer. He is often a standout with his playmaking ability at center on a bad Buffalo team.

Call Ups

To supreme the roster for the game tonight against the Detroit Red Wings, Colorado has made two call ups from the Colorado Eagles. Because of Logan O’Connor’s lower-body injury, they required someone to replace him. Jean-Luc Foudy will get his first chance of the season with the Avalanche after only 12 games with the Eagles. He has been struggling with multiple injuries, but he has six points and has been aggressive on both ends of the puck. Ondrej Pavel will also get his second call to Denver this year. The defensive forward has become a staple in the penalty kill for the Eagles and at the faceoff dot as well.

Conclusion

The Avalanche will save about $2.7 million in the two deals today. They are doing this for one of two things. First, they have to plan on making room for Gabriel Landeskog coming back. We all want to hope that he will, but only time will tell. Second, they are making room for another trade on Thursday or Friday before the deadline. The Avalanche improved with these two trades and are showing they want to go all in again.

First period

In the first period, Taylor Raddysh got off a great chance early in the period and was absolutely robbed by Samuel Ersson of the Flyers.

After the Raddysh robbery, the Flyers struck first with a goal from Travis Sanheim. Sanheim fired a shot that deflected off Alex Vlasic’s stick in for the goal.

Later in the period, Colin Blackwell got the Hawks on the board with a nifty goal. Blackwell received a great pass from Joey Anderson before dragging the puck around Jamie Drysdale and sniping a shot past Ersson.

The first period end with the score tied at 1–1.

Second period

In the second period, the Flyers jumped all over the Hawks. Travis Konecny fired a perfect shot past Arvid Soderblom to give Philly the lead. Later in the period, Soderblom gave up a juicy rebound that was buried by Garnet Hathaway. Soderblom has surrendered three goals or more in 17 of 22 starts, continuing his tough season. The period ended with the Flyers leading 3–1.

Third period

Reese Johnson dropped the gloves with former Blackhawks defenseman Nick Seeler. Bedard tried willing the Hawks to within one goal, but he was not able to get one past Ersson. The final score was 3–1 in favor of Flyers.

Analysis

Despite not recording any points in the game, Bedard had the puck on this stick often and generated some rushes for the Blackhawks. Bedard set a career high in ice time, playing 24:49. He is continuing to get stronger after returning from his broken jaw.

Blackwell scored his fourth goal of the season and has given the Blackhawks a lift since returning from back surgery.

It looks like Soderblom’s time as an NHL regular might be nearing an end. He has surrendered three goals or more in the vast majority of his starts this season. His regression has been staggering.

The Blackhawks’ next game is Friday against the Winnipeg Jets. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 p.m. CST.

Kevin Weekes from the NHL commentary team mentioned how straight and tall Georgiev was playing and how that makes a difference. He has become the backbone of this team. It is now time to find him a strong backup.

— The Avalanches third line is proving to be a dynamic trio. Ross Colton, Miles Wood and Logan O’Connor have a chemistry that has shown through during several games to provide depth scoring. This line is tenacious, fast and difficult for opposition teams to play against. Today O’Connor scored his first career hat trick after a very unselfish pass from MacKinnon, who was also on a hat trick watch.

Today’s tally from the third line was – Logan O’Connor (three goals), Ross Colton (three assists) and Miles Wood (two assists).

The stats for today’s game show that the opposing team beat the Avalanche on the ice. They had 25 shots on goal to the Flyers 40. The Avalanche won only 36% of the faceoffs, took two more penalty minutes, but had 16 hits to 14 and more importantly blocked 28 shots to the Flyers 12. I used to say that the team that won the faceoffs won the game, that is not proving valid this season. The Avalanche’s scoring ability putting seven shots out of 25 through the net showed that ultimately that counts.

Conclusion

After suffering a terrible loss on Thursday night, the Avalanche came to play today. It wasn’t an entirely straightforward game with the Flyers team showing their determination to come back in the third period, when the Avalanche’s defense looked tired and beaten. It was MacKinnon that stood up and kept the team moving forward to seal the win. Colorado will finally be back at home on Wednesday against the Washington Capitals to start a brief home stand.
