Blackhawks Prospect Suspended For Hit, Punching Referee

The KHL (Kontinental Hockey League) announced Saturday that forward (and Blackhawks draft pick) Artur Kayumov has been suspended for 13 games and fined 400,000 rubles (roughly $6000) for his actions in a game against Jokerit on December 7, 2018.

According to Patrick at Chunklets Hockey the suspension breaks down as follows:

  • 1 game = Two game misconducts in one match.
  • 4 games = major penalty for checking to the head or neck.
  • 8 games = injuring an official.

The 20-year-old Kayumov, who was a drafted by the Blackhawks in the second round (50th overall) of the 2016 entry draft, drove Jokerit defenseman Jesper Jensen headfirst with an illegal hit into the boards, instigating the incident. He then tried to fight with Jokerit’s Maki Tomi and punched a referee in the process. Not to be outdone, Kayumov then tried to incite a reaction from the crowd.

Not a good showing for a potential future Blackhawk.

Currently, Kayumov is playing his first season in the KHL with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, and has 11 points (4G,7A) in 35 games.

The pick used to draft Kayumov was acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Teuvo Teravainen and Bryan Bickell, which was originally acquired by Carolina from the New York Rangers in exchange for Eric Staal. Kayumov was drafted five picks after Boston University defenseman Chad Krys and eleven picks after Blackhawks forward Alex DeBrincat.
