Blackhawks Announce Stan Bowman and Joel Quenneville to Return

This morning, and one day prior to the final home game of the 2017-18 season, Blackhawks President and CEO John McDonough announced that the “3CUPZ CREW” of general manager Stan Bowman and head coach Joel Quenneville will return for the 2018-19 season. There has been much doubt as to whether Bowman and/or Quenneville would be retained following this extremely disappointing season, especially after McDonough’s very obvious displeasure with the Blackhawks first round playoff exits the previous two seasons.

This announcement gets out ahead of the looming dead time between the beginning of the playoffs, and the final game of the Stanley Cup final when the question would, no doubt, be front of mind.

Now the Blackhawks can focus their attention on their plan of attack for the NHL Entry Draft on June 22–23, 2018, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, and the Free Agency signing period July 1st.

    BOOOO!!

I know it was a long shot, but I was really hopeful that Stan would have gotten the axe.

I have ZERO confidence in that doofus to draft/sign/trade for the right guy(s).

Not only do I like this move, it is the correct move !

The devil you know is always better than the devil you don’t know.

Consistency will help bring this organization back, not the hire/fire approach most of the NHL bottom feeders utilize.

    Bravo !

Bowman’s “consistency” of giving out ridiculous contracts and his terrible signings and trades are the reason this organization is in the position they’re in.

The disconnect between these two has to stop. Or they will both get launched. I have to think they are on double secret probation at this point.

I don’t think you can say that Bowman has done a great job. You had 4 first ballot hall of fame guys on the roster in Hossa, Kane, Keith and Toews pretty much in their prime. That is an insane amount of talent.

He really had to do nothing too terribly stupid. The amount of talent that has gone out vs the amount of talent that has come back has been pretty abhorrent. Either not pulling the trigger fast enough or waiting for the most perfect deal ever has really been a bummer.

Q is one of the best coaches in the NHL. He does have his quirks but they can give him a loaded roster next year and he typically does well with those. Like Phil Jackson. They’ll have the money and they have assets to move to go after a veteran on the blue line or if they win the lottery they can go ham in free agency and then blow it up in 3 or 4 years and do a for real rebuild.

This feels like a last chance for these two. If things go well this offseason and next year, then they know they can be more confident in keeping them around again. If things don’t go so well, then it’s much easier and less controversial to say goodbye and turn the page on a new era of Hawkey.
And therein lies the problem – Bowman – all the ‘caretaker’ had to do was tweak here and there and you’ve got at least one more cup. But the overpays and no movers have killed this team’s depth.  Stan has been forced to trade away a lot of the 2nd tier players because of this.  How bout trading Danault for crap when all he needed was a 4th dman against the Blues in ’16.  Q’s a HOF coach – but for Christ sake fix the darn PP.  If he were launched he’d have several suitors immediately.  Bowman well good luck.

While his moves have collectively added more problems this last off season he really outdid himself with two horrid moves of Panarin and Hammer.  Oh and lets not forget the Hawks best backup goalie this year has been a 36 year old accountant…

Can’t wait to see what the caretaker has in store for next season.  The Hawks clearly need a big time Dman and quite possibly a goalie for starters.  Do they have the cap space…or does Tomas Jurco get that big extension?  Yikes.

Here’s how you can judge these two–Q and Stan Bowman……in a hypothetical.

If Q is fired on Monday, he’ll have his pick of jobs any where he wants.

If StanBo is fired, does he EVER get another GM job?
I respectfully disagree re: StanBo. He has been credited with 3 Stanley Cup wins as a GM (Hawks fan may want to credit the Dale Tallon for some or all of these). The many, many bottom feeder franchises in this league would scoop up a GM with that pedigree in a heartbeat. Agree Re:Q, he would be re-hired faster than Claude Julien was hired by the HABS, after his firing in Boston.

Stan Bowman was handed a robust roster.  **HE** F’d it up, by ridiculous contracts and signings. How many teams want to end up in cap hell–like the Hawks?   What big talent did Stan acquire that led to the third Cup?   He tinkered around the edges.  Because the first two Cups, he had very little to do with the success of those teams.

Are ya fuckin kiddin me? The big announcement the coach and GM are staying and their team comes out and displays the worst fundamentals in the league. Again. They make the same mistakes over and over again. WTF

This………  Other than loaded rosters have these two ever been on the same page?  The TDL trade of Denault and a 2nd for Weise and Fleishman and Q won’t or rarely plays either says all I need to know if I’m Rocky.  For more fuel you can add the Trevor Daley fiasco where the Hawks moved Johns followed by Q running Daley out of town and he promptly wins a cup..    That kind of ego taffy pull is ok if you’re gonna win or go deep but not if you have TWO 1st round exits before the 2017/18 train wreck.

No need to get fancy, no advanced stats, no scrubbing of anything, no consultants, boil it down to its most simple terms.  TWO 1st rd exits, one being annihilated and embarrassed by NSH in 16/17, and now this season and you keep both GM and coach?  This is on Rocky IMO.

Here by the way is the history of Blackhawk trades:  http://www.nhltradetracker.com/user/trade_list_by_team/Chicago_Blackhawks/1
