Updated trade and UFA targets; “plan” emerging?

Good morning.

Heard a number of things from my top source overnight.

First, as reported elsewhere yesterday, the Hawks have agreed to a deal (numbers TBD) with Carolina G Cam Ward. As I tweeted yesterday, Ward likely didn’t sign before UFA started for a pay cut, and thus, as a backup, he would push the Hawks’ salary commitment to goalies next year to over $9 million.

So that said, my hunch is Ward might not be coming to Chicago just as a backup. Draw from that what you will.

I heard this AM that the Hawks continue to talk to the representation of James van Riemsdyk, James Neal and Tyler Bozak.

Interestingly, in addition to left wings JVR and Neal, the Hawks have apparently had some conversations with Montreal recently about Max Pacioretty.

One THEORY we have bandied about at The-Rink is that a top 6 left wing acquisition could be a backfill for trading another left wing to get another team to take on the contract of Marian Hossa (like, say, Brandon Saad, Hossa’s contract and a future draft pick  to Carolina for oh, Justin Faulk). Just a theory, but stranger things have happened.

Finally, Connor Murphy and Artem Anisimov are being shopped fairly hard. While the Hawks have also reached out to the agents for defensemen Brandon Manning, Thomas Hickey and Calvin De Haan, in addition to those of Greg Pateryn and John Moore as first reported here earlier.

    Apparently, all goalies are Vikings

Thanks for the update, JJ. Does that mean #50 is still injured, or that they are moving him (say, to Montreal for Max P.)?

So the Hawks are all in on most every 30 yr old that wants 6+ mil per for 5-6 yrs?  They like 34 yr old Ward for 3-4 mil(?) per for more than a yr or two over a Halak or Hutton and they publicly say Crow is just fine, don’t worry?  Have 10 mil in cap space tied up in goal?  Ward’s contract is in the way in 2-3 yrs when it’s time for a Forsberg, Lankanin or Nalimov to possibly step in?

Just hope Stan fails if this is indeed the plan.

Hey John,  thanks for the update as always…

So what’s it going to take to free up Hossa’s cap space – please tell me its not Saad.  The kid had a rough season last year but I think he’ll rebound nicely this season.

As far as Ward we still don’t know what’s going on with Crawford – despite Bowman’s telling us otherwise.

They need what 2 vet dmen – depth center – goalie and a top six guy…that’s a tall order.  We’ll see what Bowman does.

Seems like the Hawks are kinda sleep walking or have decided to let everyone else hand out insane money to players like Reaves and Hammer and Dougherty (Love DD but 11m per for 8 years ????) Maybe the Hawks will sit this out and just see what they have. I feel like the Hawks as is are not competitive at all . We’ll see.

If Crawford is not healthy none of it matters anyways.

Right on, Pauly.  If Crow can’t go all Stan can do is tie his own hands in a couple yrs when he’ll need space when the Core 2.0 are difference makers.  ……… Patience is the way to go at this stage of “the rolling rebuild”.
