Avalanche sign 18-year-old defenseman to entry-level contract

The Colorado Avalanche signed undrafted defenseman Saige Weinstein to a three-year entry-level contract. Weinstein was an undrafted free agent and spent the last two full seasons with the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL.

The Avalanche invited Weinstein to their development camp in July and later to the rookie camp in September, where he played in two out of three tournament games. After Weinstein appeared in one preseason game for the Avalanche, they sent him back to the WHL.

At just 18 years old, he stands 6 feet tall and weighs 174 pounds. Weinstein is an offensive defenseman who frequently joins the play. His constant awareness makes him a consistent choice for the team. Last season in 57 games, he had 18 points while accruing 96 penalty minutes.

Weinstein is a strong candidate to enhance the Avalanche’s defense down the line. He will more than likely start his pro career with the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL, similar to the pro path of Nathan Clurman. Fans have high expectations for players like Weinstein, Jeremy Hanzel and Sam Malinski.
