Blackhawks Trade Tommy Wingels to Boston

The Blackhawks have reportedly traded forward Tommy Wingels to the Boston Bruins for a 5th round draft pick in 2019, towards the end of today’s trade deadline.  The draft pick becomes a 4th round pick of the Bruins win a playoff series or if they re-sign Wingels in the offseason.

There has been much speculation that the Blackhawks will try and re-sign Wingels to a low dollar, low risk contract on July 1st.  As a noted Chicago area native, this would make sense.

Of course, the Blackhawks could not officially announce such a plan because it would be a punishable case of player tampering

This means that the Blackhawks acquired a free draft pick, which is always a good plan.  More to come!

I’m not against the trade, but,  Stan has traded the only two guys that played physical hockey, Hartman and Wingells. (With Bouma being waived)

Pretty sure physical hockey is the last thing this team wants to do to close out this season…

Great deadline Monday by Stan this year. Hopefully Wingels is back next year hustling doing his job again. On a deep Hawks team he is a perfect 4th liner.

Good for Tommy, he gets to go to the playoffs(without buying a ticket), with a chance to put his name on the cup. That was never going to happen in SJ or Chicago in his time left to play. Boston is one of the favorites in the East, so Wingles gets to add some depth, and play a 4th line roll similar to the role he played here, but on a better team.

Maybe the Hawks will draft a much needed goalie with that extra 5th rounder. That would make this trade one to remember.

Onwards indeed. I still feel like this team is going to play a bit better down the stretch here with no pressure and no trade deadline hanging over them (Q included). This year felt like the Hawks were just ‘off’ in some intangible way – I think this year is as low as it gets for the Hawks for the next few years.
