RECAP: The nightmare continues as Hawks lose 5-4 in OT to Bruins

The Chicago Blackhawks played the Boston Bruins in a matinee on Halloween. While the Hawks’ game wasn’t as scary as it has been recently, it still was not enough to defeat the Bruins. With a 4-2 lead late in the third period, the Hawks crumbled to allow a Bruins tie. The Hawks ultimately fell in overtime.

First period

The Hawks got the scoring started early as the revamped power play scored. Patrick Kane playing on the left side fed Anton Frondell for the one-timer shot.

It was Kane’s 900th career assist on the Frondell goal.

Later in the period, the Bruins caught the Blackhawks out of position. Pavel Zacha was able to make stretch pass to a wide-open David Pastrnak. Pastrnak beat Avrid Soderblom on the 1-on-1 opportunity.

The Pastrnak goal was the last goal of the period. The first ended knotted at 1-1.

Second period

Early in the second, Tyler Bertuzzi floated a puck toward the net that was deflect by Frondell for this second goal of the game.

Past the midway point of the second period, James Hagens sent a pass over to Casey Mittelstadt for his fifth goal of the season.

Late in the second period, Alex Vlasic was called for roughing on Mittelstadt. With Vlasic on the ice, Nikita Zadorov sucker punched Vlasic, leading to a miscoduct penalty.

Period ended tied at 2-2.

Third period

Ryan Greene was able to bury a shot past Michael DiPietro to give the Hawks the lead.

Later in the period, Chicago was able to break out of their own zone. After the puck bounced through Hagens’ skates, Connor Bedard was able to bury it for the 4-2 lead.

Sadly, that was last goal of the game for Chicago.

With seven minutes to go in the period, Mason Lohrei beat Soderblom short side for the Bruins’ third goal of the game.

Morgan Geekie fired a slap shot by Soderblom to tie the game up with 12 second left.

Overtime

Frondell had a great chance in the OT that was denied by DiPietro. Less than 30 second after the Frondell chance, Elias Lindholm buried the game-winner.

Analysis

Despite the loss, there were some positives. Connor Bedard said postgame he thought it was the Hawks’ best game of the season. Bedard was special with the puck on his stick in this game. He was generating chances and buried his best opportunity of the game.

Another postive was the play of Anton Frondell. Frondell was finally moved up to the power play and paid immediate dividends. Frondell nearly ended the game in overtime with his rush to the net. On offense, the Hawks out the Bruins 41-32, which was another positive.

In terms of the negatives, the Soderblom experiment is well past over; he should not finish the season in the NHL. The coaching staff seems to feel the same way as this was his first appearance in 23 days. He finished with an .844 save percentage on the game.

Wyatt Kaiser might have reached his ceiling as a player. If the Hawks bring a veteran left-handed defenseman, Kaiser could be dealt to a contender later this season.

With the rumors swirling that the Blackhawks are looking for veterans at forwards and defense, our very own Andy Campbell and I believe that the Hawks should not give up on Bedard, Arytom Levshunov, who turned in another great game, and Frondell.

The Blackhawks’ next game is Monday at home against the Colorado Avalanche.
