RECAP: Red Wings drop Hawks 4-1 behind Arvidsson’s hat trick

The Chicago Blackhawks began a stretch of five of their next six games on the road on Thursday against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena. The Hawks looked for their second straight triumph following Tuesday night’s 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings at the United Center that capped a long stretch of games on home ice. The matchup against their Original Six brethren marks the return of Patrick Kane to Detroit, where he played the last three seasons. Spencer Knight started again in net for the Hawks against Detroit’s John Gibson.

First period

Connor Bedard put the Hawks on the board first with his third of the season. Roman Kantserov skated through the middle of the Detroit zone and dropped the puck off to Wyatt Kaiser, whose shot was stopped but Bedard tapped in the rebound at 5:59. The Hawks took a 1-0 lead and it would stay that way through one period of action. For Kantserov, it was his first career assist.

Second period

Viktor Arvidsson tied the game at 1-1 with his sixth of the season at 7:25. William Wallinder’s shot from the point was tipped in by Arvidsson, who was all alone in front of the Hawks’ net. The game would remain tied at 1-1 after 40 minutes.

Third period

Detroit broke the tie early in the period with a power play goal from Lucas Raymond, who fired a wrist shot from the right circle through traffic to give Detroit a 2-1 lead. For Raymond, it was his fourth of the season at the 1:09 mark of the third.

Arvidsson tallied his second of the game and seventh of the season at 15:26 to give Detroit a 3-1 lead. Alex DeBrincat’s wrist shot was stopped, but Arvidsson drove hard to the net and poked in the rebound at 15:26.

Arvidsson completed the hat trick with his eighth of the season at 16:45 to give Detroit a 4-1 lead, which was the final.

Analysis

Plain and simple, this was a missed opportunity. The Hawks were coming off a win and facing a Detroit team playing its first game at home off a long West Coast road trip. The start was promising when the Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead within the first six minutes, but then, for whatever reason, lost all momentum. After registering six shots on goal within the first eight minutes of the game, the Hawks applied little pressure offensively, as they had just 13 shots on goal the rest of the contest.

The Blackhawks’ road trip continues on Saturday afternoon against the Boston Bruins. Puck drop is at 12 p.m. CDT on CHSN with the radio call on 720 AM WGN.
