RECAP: Hawks squander 2-0 lead, lose 5-2 to Colorado

The Chicago Blackhawks are in the midst of a stretch of five of six on the road with the one home game taking place on Monday night when the Colorado Avalanche visited the United Center.

The Hawks were coming off a tough 5-4 overtime loss in Boston in a game where the Hawks controlled play most of the way and saw a two-goal lead in the third evaporate. Spencer Knight got the start for the Hawks against Mackenzie Blackwood for the Avs. The game also marked the debut of the Blackhawks’ new green Hometown Remix uniform. The team will wear these new sweaters in five other games this season.

First period

Just 57 seconds into the game, Wyatt Kaiser gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead with his second of the season. Kaiser shot the puck from just inside the blue line and it was deflected by Cale Makar and it trickled into the net.

The Blackhawks took a 2-0 lead on Roman Kantserov’s team-leading sixth of the season. A turnover in the offensive zone by Nazem Kadri led to Connor Bedard breaking out on a 2-on-1. Bedard fed Kantserov, who buried the one-timer at the 7:05 mark.

Colorado thought they had cut it to 2-1, however, the Hawks challenged for goalie interference and the call on the ice was overturned so the Hawks maintained a 2-0 lead.

A few minutes later, Kadri scored a goal that would stand at the 15:23 mark. Gabriel Landeskog shot the puck from along the goal line, which Knight stopped, but the puck sat on the goal line and Kadri poked it in for his third of the season.

The Avs tied it 26 seconds later when Jaden Schwartz scored his fifth of the season. An aggressive Avs forecheck led the TJ Hughes retrieving the puck and passing to Schwartz, who fired it in at 15:49 to tie the game at 2-2 and it would stay that way after 20 minutes.

Second period

Kadri gave the Avs their first lead of the game at 3-2 with his second of the game and fourth of the season at 13:38. With the Avs on the power play, Kadri tipped a point shot by Makar past Knight for the lead.

With 10.6 seconds left, the Avs took a 4-2 lead. With Chicago having trouble getting the puck, Sam Malinski shot the puck from the point and Schwartz tipped it in for his second of the game and sixth of the season to give the Avs a two-goal lead at the second intermission.

Third period

Late in the period, with the Hawks’ net empty, the Avs weathered some Hawks offensive zone pressure. Devon Toews retrieved and fired the puck from the faceoff dot into the net for his fifth of the season to give Colorado a 5-2 advantage at 17:38, which would hold as the final score.

Analysis

Another strong, promising start for the Hawks went south quickly as the Avalanche showed off their world-class skill and depth en route to a three-goal win. Also of note, Patrick Kane left late in the second period with an undisclosed injury and was ruled out for the rest of the game.

The Blackhawks head back out on the road on Wednesday night when they face the Florida Panthers in Sunrise, Florida. Puck drop is at 6:30 p.m CST and will be nationally televised on TNT with the radio call on WGN AM 720.
